To understand the love letter that is “The Fall Guy” — a passion project of former stunt performer turned A-list action director David Leitch — consider that Drew Pearce couldn’t write the script until Leitch identified the old-school stunts that would serve as its centerpieces.
IndieWire talked to Leitch and stunt designer Chris O’Hara about four of those jaw-dropping action scenes: the record-breaking cannon roll on the beach, the 225-foot car jump, the helicopter high-fall, and the boat jump. The personal and creative stories of how they came about are almost as gripping as the scenes themselves.
The Cannon Roll
After his accident, stunt double Colt Seavers’ (Ryan Gosling) first stunt is a big one: an explosion that sends his Jeep into a cannon roll. It was so big that Gosling’s own stunt double, Logan Holladay (who is seen on screen buckling Gosling into the Jeep), broke the Guinness World Record with eight-and-half rolls.

Hollywood stunt people are a breed apart. They look at a skyscraper, and wonder what floor from which they could plummet onto an airbag. They encounter a ravine, and instantly want to hop astride a motorcycle and jump it. They see a fellow stunt performer get blasted with fire extinguishers after being set ablaze, and think to themselves, "I could've stayed on fire longer than that." They're wild folk, and they can make the kind of movie magic you'll savor for a lifetime.
For movie lovers, stunt people like Dar Robinson, Vic Armstrong, and Evelyn Finley are as legendary as the stars they doubled. Among casual moviegoers, however, they aren't nearly as appreciated as they should be. So when films like Richard Rush's "The Stunt Man," Hal Needham's "Hooper," or David Leitch's forthcoming "The Fall Guy" (based on the classic 1980s TV series starring Lee Majors) crash into theaters,...

This elegant film uses the natural world to wrap an ancient context around contemporary politics and the former Australian Greens leader’s drive to save the environment

There’s a double meaning in the title of Laurence Billiet and Rachael Antony’s new documentary: Australia’s giants of ecological activism – one in particular, the former Greens leader Bob Brown – and the kind that are made of wood and rooted in the ground. The film opens with vision from Tasmania’s Styx valley of Eucalyptus regnans, the tallest flowering plants on Earth. These trees are, as Brown puts it, “bigger than any of the dinosaurs … bigger than the blue whales” and “rooted in Australian soil”. The camera ascends next to one, climbing and climbing, reaching towards the heavens, as if comprehending its awesomeness.

Hamilton star Anthony Ramos is talking about that room where it happened. From workshop presentations at The Public to sold-out crowds at Broadway’s Richard Rodgers Theater, Ramos was part of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s musical phenomenon from the beginning in 2014, playing John Laurens and Alexander Hamilton’s son Philip for over two years. “We knew we were about to be a part of something that was going to change all of our lives,” Ramos tells Et.
Now, like other stars from the original cast, Ramos is seeing his life change dramatically as his career reaches new heights. This year, the 26-year-old actor and musician landed his first starring role on TV, working with filmmaker Spike Lee, no less, playing Mars Blackmon on the Netflix TV adaptation of She’s Gotta Have It, based on Lee’s debut 1988 film about a polyamorous woman artist living in Brooklyn. Kate Hudson’s son is growing up fast!
The Deepwater Horizon actress, 38, shared an adorable slow motion video of her 6-year-old son Bingham showing off a new haircut — that he gave himself.

Early on in the great new season of Stranger Things, there's a moment that sums up the geek heart of the story. Eighties small-town misfit kid Will Byers sits alone in his room, sketching his comic-book superhero alter ego, Zombie Boy. His older brother, Jonathan, comes in for a talk about why they're different from other people. "Being a freak is the best, all right?" he explains. "I would rather be best friends with Zombie Boy than a boring nobody. Okay, look, who would you rather be friends with, Bowie or Kenny Rogers?...

Hollywood agents flew into a panic after confusing their client — adorable 13-year-old “Stranger Things” star Millie Bobby Brown — for controversial “vomit artist” Millie Brown.
The 13-year-old’s reps got wind that Millie Brown — who once puked on Lady Gaga in the name of culture — would be covering her body in multicolored wax at a Tumblr event during Made fashion week in La in order to “become a human candle.”
Erroneously believing it was their client, we’re told that the young actress’ frantic agents contacted the festival to explain that, while they didn’t want to diminish the teen’s artistic expression, she couldn’t go through with the performance because she would be on the set of “Godzilla” in Atlanta.

According to Variety, Silicon Valley star Thomas Middleditch has signed on to director Michael Dougherty’s Godzilla: King Of Monsters, the sequel to Gareth Edwards’ 2014 Godzilla revival. Middleditch will be joining previously announced cast members Charles Dance, Aisha Hinds, Vera Farmiga, Kyle Chandler, and Millie Bobby Brown, as well as Ken Watanabe, who is the only actor returning from the previous movie. We don’t know anything about the character Middleditch will be playing, but considering who he is and the kind of roles he plays, it seems safe to assume that he’ll be some kind of scientist or computer nerd with special insight into how the humans can stop Godzilla (or any other monsters who might be appearing in this movie).
Interestingly, Variety notes that Middleditch had a “small cameo” in Kong: Skull Island, providing the voice of a character who never appeared onscreen, so maybe that...

MTV’s annual Movie Awards – now with TV attached – was as irreverent as usual on Sunday night. And yet, with this year’s entry, the tone was noticeably different.
For one thing, as widely noted, the newly rechristened “MTV Movie & TV Awards” included television series for the first time. And this was also perhaps the most woke MTV awards show in recent years, as the network embracing its decision to merge male and female performers into one, singular acting category. Other awards shows have blended male and female performers in the past, but never to the extent that a major kudocast like MTV has done.
And here’s how progressive Sunday night’s winners were: Of the 19 categories, all but two – was won (or shared a win) by a female and/or person of color, or a cast featuring women or people of color.
