Wednesday, Sept. 26, 2001. The night Enterprise, later to be named Star Trek: Enterprise, premiered with “Broken Bow.” I didn’t get to see it that night, probably since it was a school night and I was 10. I taped it on VHS and watched it with my mom a day or so later. We both enjoyed it well enough.
Until we got to a certain scene.
The crew was just attacked on an alien planet. The plot was ramping up. But first? Trip (Connor Trinneer) and T’Pol (Jolene Blalock) strip down to their underwear and lather each other up with gel. I never get to know why because my mom made me fast forward through the scene, feeling it was, “inappropriate.” We got to the next scene and resumed watching, never speaking of the “inappropriate” scene again. I didn’t rewatch “Broken Bow” until earlier this year and finally got to watch the forbidden scene.

"Star Trek: Enterprise" soldiered on for four seasons, but really, the death knell happened early in season 2. The season's ratings peaked with its fifth episode, "A Night In Sickbay," at 6.26 million — and apparently, that infamous episode drove off potential audiences since the ratings on "Enterprise" never reached those same heights.
This might be why the tail end of season 2 features an obvious ratings stunt (and one that seemed destined to drive canon-obsessed Trekkies up the wall). "Regeneration" features the Borg as the villains. Contemporary promos warned viewers to, "Prepare for Enterprise's first encounter with — The Borg!" and emphasized how terrifying the cyborg hive mind is. The network definitely wanted people to know the Borg would be showing up ahead of time.
Did it work? Well, "Regeneration" pulled in 4.12 million viewers — the highest ratings since "Future Tense" and higher than the season's remaining episodes. But was this short bump worth it?...

Oh no, not the decontamination chamber.
When "Star Trek: Enterprise" debuted in 2001, there was a conscious effort by the showrunners to work in as much brazen sex appeal as they could. Noticeably, the casting directors hired Jolene Blalock, who had worked as a professional model, to play the Vulcan First Officer T'Pol, and the costume designers were careful to outfit her in skin-tight body suits. She was clearly meant to replicate Seven of Nine (Jeri Ryan) from "Star Trek: Voyager."
"Enterprise" was set about a century prior to the original "Star Trek," and some of the more popular "Trek" tech hadn't been invented yet. As such, when a team of officers returned from an away mission, they had to spend a long span in a decontamination chamber. In later other "Trek" shows, the transporters took care of contaminants and idle spores an away mission might have accumulated. On "Enterprise," officers...

The uniforms on the original "Star Trek" might be some of the most casual, comfy military kits ever seen. Captain Kirk (William Shatner) essentially wore a lightweight, tight-fitting long-sleeve t-shirt, a pair of black slacks, and some versatile patent leather shoes. Apart from his department color -- the gold hue indicated his status as a command officer -- and the rank stripes around his wrists, the uniform didn't seem to have any additional practical functions. It didn't have pockets, so communicators and tricorders needed to be carried as accessories.
One might assume that "Star Trek" uniforms were made from an ultra-advanced, super-breathable material that allowed its wearer to have a more evenly regulated body temperature, but that is mere headcanon; such details were never revealed on the show. It also wouldn't be true for the Enterprise's female crew members who were typically seen in minidress uniforms and black leggings.

Sharp-eyed Trekkies can easily see a throughline connecting Seven of Nine (Jeri Ryan) from "Star Trek: Voyager" directly to T'Pol (Jolene Blalock) from "Star Trek: Enterprise." Seven of Nine was brought onto "Voyager" in its fourth season as an attempt to boost flagging ratings, a mercenary tactic openly admitted by the show's creators. On the special features included on the "Voyager" DVDs, executive producer Brannon Braga suggested to fellow executive Rick Berman that their show should include a Borg as a character. Berman suggested it be "a Borg babe," and history was made. Ryan was squeezed into an architecturally impressive corset, and ratings began to go up.
Prior to and during her acting career on "Enterprise," Jolene Blalock was a professional model, having appeared in multiple magazines like FHM, Maxim, and Playboy, clothed. Casting Blalock as the Vulcan first officer in "Enterprise," then, seemed as mercenary as casting Ryan as...

Since its debut in 1966, Star Trek has boldly gone to nearly every cultural aspect of modern life. The franchise has included 13 feature films with various crews, numerous board and video games, hundreds of action figures, commemorative plates — you name it, and there’s probably a version with a Starfleet logo on it.
But despite all this exploration into other media and fields, Star Trek remains best on television. And after a long drought, the franchise is finally thriving again in its original medium, despite the bumbling of its parent company Paramount. Even with Picard done and Discovery entering its fifth and final season, multiple series are still in production, including the acclaimed Strange New Worlds.
But as the greatest Trek theme song reminds us, it’s been a long road getting from there to here. The Original Series was canceled after a budget-strapped third season in 1969 and only built its following in syndication.

A franchise that’s producing as much as “Star Trek” is right now shouldn’t be this good.
A year ago, “Strange New Worlds” debuted and delivered the best first season of a “Trek” show since “The Original Series.” Then “Picard” ended on a soaring and soulful note, leaving fans desperate for more. And now “Strange New Worlds” is back for Season 2, delivering the kind of character-driven episodic sci-fi that now seems downright revolutionary in the serialized streaming era.
Each one of these has been better than the last.
Somehow franchise overlord Alex Kurtzman has unlocked the secret to both quantity and quality, something which has eluded that other space-bound saga in its own streaming era. He seems to have done it by simply trusting his showrunners: Terry Matalas for “Picard” and Akiva Goldsman (never better) and Henry Alonso Myers for “Strange New Worlds.”
The result, in “Strange New Worlds...

While "Star Trek" takes place in a technological utopia -- a utopia wherein people can teleport great distances, live in holographic environs, or replicate any food or drink they should want -- there still appears to be room for old media. While the characters on "Star Trek" are typically military officers, they are often careful to attend the theater to see plays, where Shakespeare might still be performed.
On "Star Trek: The Next Generation," there are many, many classical music concerts, and performers still seem to have access to traditional brass, woodwind, and string instruments. Entire libraries may be accessed on a Padd, and Malcolm Reed (Dominic Keating) once noted that he was attempting to make his way through James Joyce's "Finnegans Wake." But other characters may be more comfortable holding an actual printed book on bound paper. One might be able to create a force field in the future,...

Actress Jolene Blalock is best known for playing ‘Vulcan’ first officer and science officer ‘T'Pol’ in the TV series “Star Trek: Enterprise”:
“…in ‘Enterprise’ Blalock played ‘Subcommander T'Pol’, a ‘Vulcan’ diplomat on Earth who was initially assigned by ‘Vulcan Ambassador Soval’ as an observer on the ship's first mission, in the pilot episode ’Broken Bow’.
“At the end of that episode, she is asked to remain on Enterprise as its ‘Science Officer’ by ‘Captain Jonathan Archer’.
“At the start of the third season ‘Xindi’ arc, she resigns her Vulcan position to remain on Enterprise when the ‘Vulcan High Command’ orders her back to Vulcan.
“Early in the fourth season, she formalizes her position in Starfleet and is granted a field commission of ‘Commander’ retaining her role as the ship's ‘First Officer’ where she remained for the rest of the series.”

On "Star Trek: Enterprise," John Billingsley played Dr. Phlox, the chief medical officer on board the titular ship. "Enterprise" took place a century prior to the events of the original "Star Trek," and was about Earth's very first ship to undergo a mission to explore strange new worlds, to seek out new life and new civilizations. It was a time before starship shields were invented, before transporters were safe to use on living beings, and before the Prime Directive. It was also before Earth had come into contact with a great number of alien species, making the Enterprise crew almost entirely human. Serving on the bridge was the Vulcan T'Pol (Jolene Blalock) and serving as the ship's doctor was the Denobulan Phlox.
Dr. Phlox is one of the more fascinating characters in all of "Star Trek." Denobulans hadn't been introduced until "Enterprise," and he provided an entire new culture to explore.

Star Trek: Lower Decks might be a zany animated comedy, but it’s also very keen to respect Trek canon and is effectively a loving homage to The Next Generation. Season 1 of the just-debuted show is set in 2380, which means it takes place one year after Star Trek: Nemesis. This opens the door for various familiar characters to drop by, something which has been teased before, but it also means that some of the characters the creators really want to use they can’t. At least, not without breaking canon.
The Lower Decks creative team took part in a virtual panel via ReedPop’s The Metaverse recently and during this chat, showrunner Mike McMahan revealed two characters he wishes he could get into the series but unfortunately can’t, due to its place in Trek continuity. First of all, he would love to have Star Trek: Enterprise’s T’Pol feature.

We salute 10 memorable guest roles on Stargate Sg-1, featuring Seth, The Keeper and more...
As with our previous features, this is a list designed to celebrate the very best performances by guest actors in Stargate Sg-1. However, we did come across a couple of challenges in compiling the list for this particular series. We’ve defined ‘guest performance’ as an actor playing a character who is not a regular or recurring character – so the actor must have played the character no more than twice in this particular series (though they may have appeared more often in other branches of the franchise). Stargate Sg-1 liked to re-use its best guest characters as often as possible, frequently bringing back characters like Claudia Black’s Vala Mal Doran after what was initially a one-off appearance, which is great as the audience get to enjoy them again, but seriously reduces the number of eligible performances.

For 50 years, the many incarnations of Star Trek have been boldly going where other shows wouldn’t.
The recent announcement that Hikaru Sulu (John Cho) will be gay in this weekend’s third installment of the Star Trek reboot films has garnered intense attention, contention, and debate. Many jilted fan boys have cried foul over director Jason Lin and writer Simon Pegg’s decision to pay homage to the original Sulu George Takei, claiming that it ruins the integrity of the character. Many have rejoiced in the “first” Lgbtq character in the franchise. Both of these camps are misguided. Star Trek has always been a place for Lgbtq representation — even when studios and public opinion refused to allow it to be overt.
Star Trek: The Original Series was groundbreaking in many ways. It was the vehicle through which one of the first televised interracial kisses occurred between Captain Kirk (William Shatner) and Lieutenant Uhura (Nichelle Nichols). The...

“Don’t screw this up.”
Admiral Maxwell Forrest, Starfleet Command, to Captain Jonathan Archer • “Broken Bow” • Episode 1, Season 1, Enterprise
As I mentioned in last week’s column (Oh Boy), Scott Bakula also starred as Captain Jonathan Archer on Enterprise, which ran on the Upn network from September 2001 to May 2005, a total of four years. That’s one more year than Tos’s run, but three years shorter than its successful progenitors, Next Gen, Deep Space Nine, and Voyager.
Upn claimed that poor ratings caused Enterprise’s downfall; according to Wikipedia, it never rose above the Top 100 rank in the Neilson ratings system, debuting at #115, and continuing to sink until its final season, where it landed at #148. It’s generally perceived as a failure, and has been blamed for the lack of any Star Trek on either television or movie screens until J.J. Abrams’s 2009 film reboot of the franchise.

The voyage continues for the brave first crew of the Enterprise. It’s a bit disheartening as modern audiences (such as me) discover what a good show it was (although still some clunker episodes) now that the voyage is over. Paramount/CBS also ponies up some excellent special features to help tell the behind-the-scenes tales of why Enterprise stopped boldly going. The Nx-01 Enterprise is commanded by Capt. Jonathan Archer (Scott Bakula) crewed by chief engineer Charles “Trip” Tucker III (Connor Trinneer), tactical officer Malcolm Reed (Dominic Keating), communications officer Hoshi Sato (Linda Park), helmsman Travis Mayweather (Anthony Montgomery), alien Dr. Phlox (John Billingsley), and Vulcan science officer T’Pol (Jolene Blalock). I guess you’d say that the captain and...

It's amazing what just a little bit of time, like a week, can do for a series. Especially when it's one like "Enterprise." It was just two weeks ago that the world was introduced to the fifth incarnation of Star Trek when "Broken Bow" hit the small screen of Upn with rave reviews, and impressive ratings. But things went downhill from there after a poor outing with blood-sucking aliens in "Fight or Flight." However, things might be back on pace with "Strange New World" that not only reintroduced the energy that was first offered in "Broken Bow," but created some tense moments that was seriously lacking in "Fight or Flight." In "Strange New World," Enterprise is diverted from a nebula study after coming across an M-Class planet, which T'Pol (Jolene Blalock) describes as "Minshara Class." ...

So, T'Pol might not be single for very long, eh? Jolene Blalock, who will bring the latest Star Trek Vulcan to life in Upn's "Enterprise" next week, told Gregory L. Norris and Laura A. Van Vleet at TrekGalaxy that there might be a little Pon Farr in the air. "Yeah, she's betrothed," Blalock said of her character. "And she's dealing with what to do, because obviously, you can't have a relationshup, emotional or not, in any species, and have a position on a starship. And that's the dilemma. "She has to deal with that. Is the marriage going to be postponed, is T'Pol going to work it out, is she going to stay on the shup or what?" Blalock mentioned that her big inner debate will happen during the series' eighth episode, which she said was called "Breaking the Ice," confirming earlier ...

You know the drill. You love that show. Want it to last forever. Then they go and cancel it. The TV execs don’t care that you plan your life around it. They don’t care that you obsess over the characters so much it’s as if they are real people you know and care about. All they care about is advertising revenue and whether it’s attracting enough greenbacks. Programmes after all are what fill in the time between the advertising. The reality means good shows get dumped in the trash. Let’s pay tribute to the shows we loved that should never have been axed whilst lesser offerings were allowed to go on and on…

Legend of the Seeker (TV) will kick off its second season this weekend and no one is more excited about it than series star Craig Horner, who plays the titular Seeker, Richard. When last seen, Richard had killed the villainous Darken Rahl (Craig Parker), and as the action-fantasy picks up the story, Richard knows better than to get too caught up in celebrating his victory, as evil of all kinds is lurking, threatening him, Zedd (Bruce Spence), Kahlan (Bridget Regan), and the people and land they love. PopStar recently caught up with Horner for the following exclusive interview. Let's go back to season one. How pleased were you with initial set-up of the story and the characters, and what intrigued you most about the way in which the season unfolded? At first I wasn't so sure about the idea of Kahlan and Richard not being instant friends when they meet,...

In the world of notable Star Trek female Vulcans, you’ve got Kirstie Alley from “The Wrath of Kahn” and Kim Cattrall from “The Undiscovered Country”, and then, er, well, that’s about it. Of course, all those past Vulcan ladies took a backseat when Jolene Blalock became, essentially, The Vulcan female during her stint on Enterprise. A quick bio via Wikipedia: Jolene Blalock (born March 5, 1975 in San Diego, California) is an American actress best known for playing the Vulcan T’Pol in Star Trek: Enterprise. A popular model, Blalock left home at 17 to model in Europe and Asia. She has appeared on the cover of many men’s lifestyle magazines and was twice featured in Maxim’s “Girls of Maxim” gallery. She posed for a clothed fashion layout in Playboy in April 2002. She was later interviewed by the magazine for its “20Q” section in February 2005. Blalock spent years dieting...

NEW YORK -- The sort of cheesy thriller that would prove mildly diverting on late-night cable, "Slow Burn" at least features a terrific cast to enliven its familiar elements. Equally derivative of John Grisham and "The Usual Suspects", the film opened nationwide Friday without being screened for critics despite the fact that it played the Toronto International Film Festival a couple of years ago.
Ray Liotta stars as Ford Cole, a hotshot district attorney who is grooming himself for the mayoral race.
His political career is put into jeopardy one fateful night -- when he is being followed around by a Vanity Fair reporter (Chiwetel Ejiofor), no less -- when his beautiful, biracial assistant D.A. and lover (Jolene Blalock, formerly of "Star Trek: Enterprise") is arrested in the killing of a stalker (Mekhi Phifer) who allegedly raped her.
Desperately racing to clear the case in the predawn hours to save his own skin, Cole finds himself even more flummoxed when the victim's fellow record store employee (billed as James Todd Smith aka LL Cool J, and isn't it time he picked a name already?) shows up at the station to claim that the shooter and victim were in fact lovers.
The ensuing investigation features plenty of twists and turns involving a shady real estate deal, an apparently all-powerful but never seen gang leader, the perpetrator's dubious racial heritage and enough false identities to fill a dozen Agatha Christie novels.
Director-screenwriter Wayne Beach ("Murder at 1600", "The Art of War") provides properly moody atmospherics and keeps things moving at a relatively swift pace but is ultimately unable to compensate for the story's inconsistencies, incongruities and implausibility. Not helping matters is the series of cheesy, film noir-style one-liners that Cool J is forced to utter, including: "She stood there like a tangerine, ripe and ready to be plucked"; "The closest her family's been to Africa is Whitney Houston's greatest hits"; and (our favorite), "She walked in the room smelling like mashed potatoes and every man wanted to be the gravy."
The supporting cast, which also includes Bruce McGill, Taye Diggs, Joe Grifasi and co-producer Fisher Stevens delivering pungent turns, is uncommonly good, and "Trek" fans will no doubt appreciate the opportunity to ogle the gorgeous Blalock in her several nude scenes.

Lionsgate has acquired North American and U.K. distribution rights to the thriller Slow Burn, written and directed by Wayne Beach and produced by Fisher Stevens, Sidney Kimmel and Bonnie Timmermann. The big-city suspense thriller marks Beach's directorial debut, and it stars Ray Liotta, LL Cool J, Mekhi Phifer, Jolene Blalock, Taye Diggs and Chiwetel Ejiofor. The film's multicultural perspective on modern-day urban politics centers on an ambitious district attorney (Liotta) who finds himself in a bad situation when his assistant district attorney (Blalock) confesses to killing a man in self-defense. Her story is contradicted by a stranger named Luther Pinks (LL Cool J) and becomes further complicated by record store clerk (Phifer) and a gang lord.

New TV Star Trek Vulcan Jolene Blalock was so convinced her boyfriend would agree to marry her, she arranged the ceremony for the day after she proposed to him. The romantic actress, who plays Subcommander T'pol in Enterprise, married Michael Rapino at the end of April, while the couple were vacationing in Jamaica. And she admits she never doubted he'd agree to become her husband - even though others weren't quite so convinced her 24 hour engagement would work out. Blalock, who once dated actor Edward Furlong, says, "Little did my husband know we were all planning a surprise wedding. Everyone knew - his family, my family, the hotel, the wedding planner, everyone but him. I proposed to him the evening before on both knees and he said yes. When I let him know that the ceremony was at 6.15 the next evening, he was like 'Oh.' The owner of the bungalow we were staying in kept coming up to me and saying, 'What if he says no?' I was like, 'What do you care, you still get your check.' He said, `Would you like a taxi standing by just in case?'"...
