After spending decades proving beyond a shadow of a doubt that he was far more than just James Bond, seven-time 007 Sean Connery decided it was safe to dust off the persona for The Rock (1996), playing former Special Air Service spy John Mason. This brilliantly batshit Michael Bay action adventure extravaganza, which has aged like a fine Coppola wine, also made a Hollywood superstar out of Nicolas Cage, then a recent Oscar darling known more for offbeat character work than beating up baddies.

A man was arrested in Fargo, North Dakota, Friday night for allegedly driving a Zamboni while intoxicated. Spectators called the cops after they noticed Steven Anderson driving erratically during a girls high school hockey game at the South Arena, the Grand Forks Herald reports. He was arrested on suspicion of DUI. "I've been here for 22 years … and we have not had an incident like this before," Jim Larson, director of finance and human resources for the Fargo Park District, told the paper. Thankfully, no one was injured. Anderson has since been fired from his part-time job, Larson told Kfgo. "I...

This Saturday and Sunday, April 20 and 21, a new comics and pop culture convention will debut in Washington, DC: Awesome Con! I’m super-excited about this, given that there hasn’t been a comic con in DC proper in lo, these many years since I have lived here. Okay, okay, maybe I exaggerate a bit. As it happens, there was a comic con here as recently as 2005. But it’s still been quite awhile. There are comic cons in the general area, yes, like the excellent Baltimore Comic Con, as well as cons in Richmond, and Annapolis; but for those of us who are Metro-dependent, those cons are not so easy to get to.
Now, finally, we’re getting a con right in the city, at the Washington Convention Center, a three minute walk from the Mt. Vernon Square metro station (or 11 minutes from McPherson Square or Metro Center stations, for orange/blue line folks). Yay!

Optus has released the second in a series of ads that reposition the telco as a major broadband provider with the slogan ‘It’s possible’.
The ad features a digitised blonde woman holding a yellow cube – a symbol that denotes the Optus network.
An animal doesn’t feature in the ad until the closing frame, when a bear makes deliveries of the yellow Optus cubes.
The visual effects were by Fuel VFX, the ad created by M&C Saatchi.
Anthony Shiner, Optus director of fixed, said in a press release: “Optus revolutionised the fixed broadband market in 2007 with Australia’s first ‘yes’ Fusion home broadband bundle. Today we take this a step further driving mobile lead convergence by giving our customers free fixed broadband as included value for the first time.”
M&C Saatchi Ecd Ben Welsh added: “It was important to bring the brand theme and style seamlessly into the product narrative.

A digitised woman wearing only a petticoat, wandering through dark city streets searching for her lover, is the centre piece for a new brand campaign for Optus.
The idea behind the ad is that Optus brings people closer through its technology.
Though human beings dominate the ad, the telco has not turned its back on animals. A fish, an octopus, a dog, a kangaroo and a rhino make an appearance in the ad.
The yellow cube in the ad represents the Optus network, which transports the girl from Shanghai to her lover in Canowindra, New South Wales.
The agency behind the campaign was M&C Saatchi, which retained the business after a marathon 10-month review in March.
Gavin Williams, head of segment marketing said: “The message of our new brand campaign is a very simple one – we share in what matters most to you. From connecting you with the people you love,...

Thursday's (Jan. 21) news that the Parents Television Council (PTC) had stepped up their fight against MTV and its new series, "Skins," has definitely raised some issues for viewers.
While the PTC is asking the federal government to look into possible child pornography violations, MTV has publicly expressed its confidence that the depictions in their Tvma-rated new series will pass any government investigations and reflects the reality of teenage Americans, as well as common American community standards.
MTV's fight with the PTC raises several questions about censorship, parental responsibilities, and what we, as a country, deem to be inappropriate.
When Zap2it asked our readers if MTV's "Skins" goes too far, you touched on several of the points we mentioned above. Of course, we wouldn't expect any less from our opinonated, well-informed, TV and pop culture-literate readers!

Mti Home Video has been around for twenty plus years as a film distributor and their track record has mostly been good. But every once in awhile they will distribute an undigestable cinematic turd like Creature of Darkness (Creature of Darkness Review Here) or their latest, titled Legion: The Final Exorcism - to see if viewers are paying attention. This film was completed in 2006 as Costa Chica: Confession of an Exorcist, with a release elusive until Mti picked this one up for distro' on DVD January 11th. Mti would have better served the public by purchasing rights to the film only to destroy any copies created.

Artist Steven Anderson (aka Seven_Hundred) has created one of my favourite mash-ups using Scott Pilgrim vs. The World and combining it with seven other films released in 2010. Below you can see a few example,s but I recommend you head over to Bite to see the rest.
Here is what Steven had to say about his collection over at Bite:
Scott Pilgrim doesn’t just have 7 evil exes to battle against – on his way to the cinema, he is also going to have to take on 7 box office behemoths!
Enjoy!
About Bite
For people who want to be entertained, Bite is the alternative source for a variety of smart, original and unfiltered comedy that’s current and relevant.
Bite TV’s International Interactive Emmy® award-winning format features the very best in all things funnny – comedy shorts, stand-up, improv, and of course the funniest, most celebrated shows around – handpicked for you.

Welcome to another round of “indie crime movie digs up one of the most well-worn plots and tries to put a new spin on it”, as Ray Liotta, Christian Slater and Ving Rhames have all signed on to The River Sorrow. While the film sounds like three men who go on a cruise down a slightly depressing waterway (think Three Men in a Boat meets Lars von Trier), it’s actually a tale of a detective (Liotta) who pushes his family life aside to hunt down a serial killer. As for the spin? Well, we’ll have to wait and see on that front, but Rhames (who presumably will be finding the time for this during his off-days on the next Mission: Impossible movie) is Liotta’s captain and the one man he confides in, while Slater has locked in a deal to play an FBI agent who is assigned to oversee the case.

Our asshat nominees this time out included a science fiction writer who wasn't Orson Scott Card, perennial asshat fave Maggie Gallagher and her Nom minions, a hate-spouting Baptist minister from Tempe, and an Italian soccer coach.
The minister won, unfairly tarnishing the reputation of Christians everywhere. If you're curious what exactly Pastor Steven Anderson said to take the buttocks crown and what his margin of victory was, read on!
Here are the voting results for this week's poll:
As you can see, Pastor Anderson took this thing in a landslide, possibly for his claims to pray every night for President Obama's death and descent into hell. Or possibly for his comments on the gays: "I believe that every homosexual in the world is a deviant, is evil, and is a predator that is out to recruit others through molestation, through rape. It's in the news...I would keep my kids away from them.

It's a good day for funny people, especially if your name is Tina Fey or Seth MacFarlane.
Fey's series, 30 Rock, was handed 22 Emmy nominations this morning, which stands as a record for a comedy series. She and Alec Baldwin were also nominated for acting awards. Plus, for the first time some of the other actors on NBC's laffer were recognized. Jane Krakowski, Jack McBrayer and Tracy Morgan all picked up supporting nominations.
MacFarlane's Family Guy was also nominated for best comedy series, the first time an animated show has cracked that category since The Flintstones in 1961. Two years ago MacFarlane decided to pull his show from contention in the animated series category to have it considered for best comedy.

The 2009 BAFTA Award nominees have been announced and Slumdog Millionaire, along with The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, leads the way with 11 nominations with The Dark Knight close behind with nine. However, at the top of the pile it is immediately noticeable that The Dark Knight did not get a Best Film nomination as all the usual suspects are there, but The Reader is added to the pack as one of its five nominations. Dev Patel (Slumdog Millionaire) is considered a lead actor at the BAFTAs and earns a nomination in the category while he is competing Stateside for a Supporting nom. I believe he is more of a lead actor than a supporting, but Fox Searchlight obviously sees the supporting category as the easier place to get him a nomination and has pushed him in the category as a result. Other than that, the usuals are there with Brad Pitt earning a nomination,...

Heather Mills' sex life is to be laid bare in a shocking new TV documentary.
Sir Paul McCartney's estranged wife is the subject of the forthcoming McCartney v McCartney: The Ex-Files, a show which will delve deep into the former glamour model's life before her marriage to the Beatles legend.
Former lovers and ex-boyfriends of Mills were approached to feature on the tell-all documentary, in what executive producer Steve Anderson calls "the programme Sir Paul should have seen before he decided to get married".
Another TV insider adds, "Researchers have been digging into her past and have found some things she'll probably not be too happy to see again. She's tough and she's bounced back before. But she's worried this could lead to further problems for her in Britain."
Mills was awarded $33 million (GBP16.5 million) cash and assets worth $15.6 million (GBP7.8 million) at London's High Court last week, following lengthy divorce proceedings with McCartney.
McCartney and Mills split in May 2006 and have a four-year-old daughter, Beatrice. A further hearing to grant a decree nisi and officially dissolve their marriage will take place on 12 May.
