German visualization tech developer Chaos, whose software includes the Engineering Emmy and SciTech Academy Award-honored V-Ray renderer, is developing new tech aimed at offering studios what it believes will be a less costly, more efficient and higher quality option for virtual production volumes.
To test Project Arena — a high quality real-time renderer — Chaos assembled a team of production pros to create a short using the tech in a virtual production environment. The Western-themed short, which is expected to debut in the spring, is being lensed by American Society of Cinematographers past president Richard Crudo, while the virtual production line producer is James Blevins, co-founder of virtual production firm Mesh and a former post supervisor on “The Mandalorian.”
The goal of the new renderer is to help productions more quickly move 3D-created scenes from popular creation tools such as Maya and Houdini onto LED screens. “I don’t know any other way to express it,...

“If a director is smart, he’ll give me the elbow room to paint.” So said Gordon Willis, who worked with some very clever directors indeed, who let him “paint” some of the most beautiful and influential movies of the 1970s and made an incalculable contribution to the Golden Age of New Hollywood. The sad news of his death yesterday at the age of 82 has robbed the world of one of the most important artists of the past fifty years.
Nicknamed ‘The Prince of Darkness’ by his fellow cinematographer Conrad Hall, Willis’s trademark was his use of shadows, not just in the composition of scenes but on actors’ faces. The interior scenes in The Godfather (1972) typify this stark technique, as do the underground car park scenes in All The President’s Men (1976), where Hal Holbrook’s “Deep Throat” is rendered faceless by Willis’s photography.

Godfather cinematographer Gordon Willis passed away today, at the age of 82. Willis, who was known as the Prince of Darkness for his bold use of shadows, was one of the most influential cinematographers of the '70s and '80s. Along with all three Godfather movies, he served as director of photography on films including All the President's Men, Manhattan, and Annie Hall. "This is a momentous loss," American Society of Cinematographers president Richard Crudo told Deadline. "He was one of the giants who absolutely changed the way movies looked. Up until the time of The Godfather 1 and 2, nothing previously shot looked that way. He changed the way films looked and the way people looked at films." The cause of death has not been released.

Chicago – 1941’s “Blood and Sand” features Tyrone Power and Rita Hayworth at their charismatic peaks and the new Blu-ray HD transfer courtesy of Fox is a solid one for fans of this bullfighting melodrama. It’s far from a perfect film but Rouben Mamoulian’s saga of love, fame, and death works on its own terms and contains some notably strong cinematography, for which it won the Academy Award. A solid commentary track on the Blu-ray from a legendary cinematographer highlights the visual strengths of this 70-year-old classic.
Rating: 3.5/5.0
The opening act of “Blood and Sand,” while setting up the visual palette, feels bloated to a degree that impacts too much of the rest of the film. It takes too long to get to the adult Juan Gallardo (Power), who returns to his Spanish home town a successful bullfighter like his controversial father. He finally has the fame and money to marry his first love,...

The Golden Age of Hollywood is filled with shining stars, brilliant directors and pioneering films that built a foundation for all to follow. As a result, films from those first decades are viewed with nostalgia and fondness, making us consider them all to be wonderful, especially the ones form the Big Name Stars.
