In one of the most twistedly intense films of his career, Lucio Fulci takes on the erotic thriller genre and unleashes an onslaught of glossy depravity in Uhd for the first time ever: Brett Halsey (Demonia), Corinne Cléry (The Story of O), and Blanca Marsillach (Flesh+Blood) star in this insane S&m saga complete with torrid romance, rampant nudity, woodwind-induced orgasms, and a cavalcade of kink to deliver what The Digital Bits calls “one of the sleazier films Fulci ever made.” Stefano Madia (Body Count), Bernard Seray (Hell of the Living Dead) and Fulci himself co-star in this psychosexual sickie—also known as Dangerous Obsession—now scanned in 4K from the original negative with special features that include an all-new interview with Blanca Marsillach and a newly discovered audio interview with Lucio Fulci.

It’s no secret that horror too often elicits kneejerk reactions from narrow-minded critics who, for some reason or another, aren’t willing to give its particular brand of storytelling a fair shake. There are countless examples of films that have received lukewarm to scathing critiques from reviewers upon their release only to be embraced as classics years later, sometimes even by the same writers that originally did them dirty. Last House on the Left (1972), The Shining (1980) and, perhaps most famously, The Thing (1982) were all savaged for various reasons during their initial runs but are now not only thought of as staples of their genre but of cinema as a whole.
This was also the case for Mario Bava’s Blood and Black Lace (1964). Barely making a splash with audiences and critics alike when it was released in Italy 60 years ago this month, the picture’s impact would soon be gargantuan.

Nunsploitation appears to be alive and well in 2024 with this week’s arrival of Immaculate, a convent-set horror movie that borrows heavily from ’70s Italian horror, the peak era of the exploitation film. Nunsploitation, a subgenre of exploitation films that hit its prime in the late ’70s and early ’80s, often features nuns behaving badly. More importantly, nunsploitation films explore themes of sexual or religious repression, frequently unleashing scathing critiques of the Church through blasphemous imagery and nuns behaving badly.
This week’s streaming picks are dedicated to nunsploitation horror. These taboo-shattering horror movies have more on their mind than their low-budget exploitation origins suggest.
Here’s where you can stream them this week.

Alucarda – Cultpix
Directed and co-written by Juan López Moctezuma, this English-language Mexican horror film stars Tina Romero as Alucarda, who was raised by nuns at a repressive Catholic convent.

This year’s Overlook Film Festival will also play host to the world premiere of Grindhouse Releasing’s brand new 4K restoration of the Lucio Fulci horror classic, The Beyond!

Shot entirely in and around New Orleans, and driven by one of the all-time great Fabio Frizzi scores, Grindhouse Releasing’s brand new restoration is mandatory big-screen viewing.”

When Italian horror comes to mind, it’s the unholy trifecta of Dario Argento, Lucio Fulci, and Mario and Lamberto Bava that dominate the discussion. However, Michele Soavi is another essential – albeit underrated – Italian horror savant from the ‘80s and ‘90s who cut his teeth as Argento and Fulci’s apprentice, before ascending to become their peer through formative films like StageFright and Dellamorte Dellamore (aka Cemetery Man). Soavi has a flair and appreciation for immersive and complex camera visuals, intimidating antagonists, and gruesome gore, all of which are on display in the director’s most polarizing film, The Church, which now celebrates its 35th anniversary.
This cinematic achievement began as Demons 3, the third film in Argento and Lamberto Bava’s popular supernatural horror series. However, the horror sequel soon pivoted into an original project early on in its production after Bava walked and Soavi took over and completely rewrote the script.

Aquarius Releasing founder Terence “Terry” Levene, who released dozens of B-movies in grindhouse theaters in the 1970s and ’80s and beyond, died Jan. 13 in Englewood, NJ. He was 90.
After working at Commonwealth United, Levene started Aquarius Releasing, which released genre films ranging from kung fu to sci-fi and far beyond and serve as a sub-distributor for Roger Corman and others. Aquarius had offices above the Selwyn Theatre on 42nd St. in New York, and released films including “Silent Night, Deadly Night,” “Isaac Hayes: Black Moses of Soul” and Lucio Fulci’s “The Beyond” (retitled as “Seven Doors of Death.”)
Among the other films he distributed or booked were the New York release of the wildly successful sex film “Deep Throat,” the Northeastern release of “Halloween” and John Sayles’ “Alligator.”

Terry Levene, the schlock showman who as the head of Aquarius Releasing was behind such films as Bruce Lee Fights Back From the Grave and Doctor Butcher, Medical Deviate, has died. He was 90.
Levene died Jan. 13 surrounded by his family in Englewood, New Jersey, Severin Films executive Josh Johnson announced.
Operating out of an office above the Selwyn Theatre on West 42nd Street in New York, Levene creatively marketed low-budget American features including Isaac Hayes: Black Moses of Soul (1973) and Silent Night, Deadly Night (1984).
For grindhouses and drive-ins, the onetime amateur boxer rebranded Lucio Fulci’s supernatural horror film The Beyond (1981) as Seven Doors of Death (1985) and Umberto Lenzi’s Italian shocker Cannibal Ferox (1981) as Make Them Die Slowly (1983), promoting the gory latter as “The Most Violent Film Ever! As every new month brings an insane tidal wave of new additions to streaming libraries, it can be tough selecting the perfect watch. Even more so when it comes to Tubi, a streaming platform with a vast, overwhelming selection of titles that include everything from mainstream releases to obscure deep cuts once trapped on VHS.
Because the streaming service excels so well at this with a layout that isn’t always the easiest to navigate when hunting down rare titles or finding the best horror movies on Tubi, we’re here to help.
For February, we’re narrowing it down to twenty horror movies you should watch, from recent gems to required viewing from horror masters. More specifically, this list avoids too many of the obvious classics, like The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (also streaming on Tubi), to instead offer a wider variety slightly off the beaten path.

If you read enough horror reviews or listen to enough horror podcasts, you’re bound to come across someone bemoaning the shoddy digital effects present in so many modern genre movies. As cranky as it sounds, it also makes sense—practicals are rare, violence is often digitized rather than staged, and CGI blood has unfortunately become the rule as opposed to the exception.

Not every horror movie is going to connect with critics, no matter how much the public loves it or if its wider reputation grows more favorably over time. These range from cult classics that earned legions of devoted fans to maligned sequels and reboots that didn't deserve the critical hate they got upon release. Simply put, even the most poorly reviewed horror flicks deserve a reappraisal and are, at the very least worth a look from the curious and unfamiliar.
There are plenty of horror movies that hold a rotten critics' approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes that still make for interesting, and in many cases, even great viewings. With everything from supernatural giallo movies to slasher sequels that subvert expectations, there is a horror movie for every scary sensibility. Here are the 15 horror flicks that didn't connect with most critics that should be given at least one solid viewing.

Abandon all hope as we enter the City of The Living Dead (1980), a satanic freak fest of gore, guts, and ghouls. It’s a wild ride a nightmarish insanity where psychics are buried alive, boyfriends have their brains squeezed out of their skulls, and a poor girl vomits every single one of her organs. It’s a movie that really shouldn’t work, but (according to one of us) it’s somehow defies the odds and delivers the goods. Join ussss…

Severin Films kicks off the new year with three North American premieres that bring “one of the best labels in physical media” (Polygon) into 2024 replete with classic monsters, barbed-wire garrotes, ‘80s Italo-Sleaze in Uhd and arguably the most depraved bedtime accessory ever created.
For January, Severin presents the ultimate version of Jess Franco’s 1972 mash-up Dracula, Prisoner Of Frankenstein; the rarely-seen Ozploitation slasher Bloodmoon, complete with infamous ‘Fright Break Challenge’; and Andrea Bianchi’s off-the-rails zombie carnage classic Burial Ground, now in eye-popping, flesh-ripping 4K.
To further celebrate everyone’s favorite shambling Etruscans, an all-new Burial Ground t-shirt and Michael Pillowcase will be available in two of this month’s bundles.
January also brings much-requested wide-release versions of previously limited-edition titles — Frank Henenlotter’s black comedy shocker Bad Biology, controversial ‘80s sleaze classic Nightmare and Lucio Fulci’s giallo masterpiece The Psychic — all fully restored in 4K Uhd.

It’s a brand new year, and Deep Cuts Rising is back to spotlight less talked about horror movies. The first installment of 2024 features selections reflecting the month of January.
Regardless of how they came to be here, or what they’re about, these past movies can generally be considered overlooked, forgotten or unknown.
This month’s offerings feature zombies, a killer New Year’s party and more.
Knife of Ice (1972)
Image: All but too late, Ida Galli (as Evelyn Stewart) spots the knife-wielding killer behind her in Knife of Ice.
Directed by Umberto Lenzi.
Giallo fans have designated both January and July as months for celebrating the genre. So it’s a great time to get acquainted with these stylish mysteries. Novices will naturally be drawn to the more popular and acclaimed filmmakers that gialli have to offer — Dario Argento, Mario Bava, Lucio Fulci — but others like Umberto Lenzi shouldn’t be disregarded.

Bakemono, the film’s title card informs us, is Japanese for monster, a combination of “bake” which means changing or transforming and “mono” which means thing or creature. And that is what the film is about, a shapeshifting creature killing people in a Tokyo Airbnb. Killing lots of people and shedding lots of blood in the process, which is both the film’s strong point and biggest weakness.
Writer/director Doug Roos has set up a very minimal plot that involves Mitsou who has conjured up the demonic creature which now preys on those unfortunate enough to rent the apartment. This leads to a parade of victims. Some it simply attacks, others it seems to draw out their baser emotions causing them to quarrel with,...

Grindhouse is one of the most influential box office failures of the 21st century. Despite grossing a paltry $25.4 million at the box office on a budget of around $60 million, Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino’s 2007 love letter to exploitation cinema has managed to spawn four spin-off movies — Machete, Machete Kills, Hobo with a Shotgun, and now Thanksgiving— in addition to reintroducing a vintage aesthetic that has been mimicked by countless other throwback movies.
Rodriguez’s Planet Terror and Tarantino’s Death Proof each have their merits — the former plays like a satirical pastiche of nonstop action, while the latter is more indicative of genuine exploitation fare — but Grindhouse is more than just a double feature. It’s an experience, complete with faux aging to recreate the look of beat-up film prints along with vintage interstitials and retro-inspired trailers for nonexistent movies.

While there’s plenty to be said and appreciated about cozy, comforting horror that offers catharsis, the genre’s ultimate aim is to terrify, shock, and even repulse. Of course, there is no shortage of ways that filmmakers accomplish this, frequently through gore, violence, and potent scare tactics, but transgressive horror is in a league of its own.
More than just gore, transgressive horror films revel in the taboo. Transgressive horror shatters cultural norms and seeks to explore beyond the boundaries of taste and social sensibilities, challenging viewers with shocking and sacrilegious imagery and themes. And yet, it’s not solely for shock value; transgressive horror has more on its mind than simply gore and depictions of depravity. There’s a purpose behind the pain. This week’s streaming picks are for the seekers of extreme cinema, unafraid to test their limits.
Here’s where you can stream them this week.

The struggle to keep movie theaters alive gets very personal in “Showdown at the Grand,” an enjoyable tribute to retro exploitation pictures with Terrance Howard as a movie palace proprietor besieged by diminishing receipts and violent goons. Dolph Lundgren plays the former action star who shows up for a personal appearance, then stays to help save the joint from those agents of unscrupulous developers. More low-key homage than campy cartoon, writer-director Orson Oblowitz’s fourth feature does manage to deliver some tongue-in-cheek mayhem in an extended climax.
The setting is an actual vintage art deco temple for cinema, San Pedro’s Warner Grand, though rather than being managed by the City of Los Angeles (as it is off-screen), it’s kept alive here as a none-too-successful for-profit labor of love by George Fuller (Howard). “The Godfather of Gore” Lucio Fulci worked across all genres, but it’s his horror output that’s most remembered thanks to his knack for visceral violence, gore, and unconventional storytelling. All of these are on prominent display in his Lovecraftian “Gates of Hell” trilogy that began with 1980’s City of the Living Dead. While its atmosphere and gross-out gore gags are the standout reasons to watch, City of the Living Dead also happens to make for a stellar Halloween hidden gem.
The premise is simple: a priest commits suicide in a Dunwich village cemetery and unwittingly opens the gate to Hell. The death is observed in visions by a medium, Mary Woodhouse (Catriona MacColl), as she’s conducting a séance in her New York apartment. Mary’s so overwhelmed by fear of the imminent evil encroaching that she collapses and is presumed dead, only to be rescued from her...

Spiders rank high among the iconic symbols of Halloween thanks to endless seasonal décor and their superstitious association with witches. Still, the eight-legged arachnids are frequently considered the scariest thanks to the prevalent fear of them. Spiders tend to elicit a reaction.

One of the standouts in a stellar lineup of Revivals at the 61st New York Film Festival earlier this month was Paul Vecchiali’s haunting, captivating portrait of alienation The Strangler. The new 2K restoration of the 1970 French arthouse giallo will now be getting a much-deserved wider release from Altered Innocence and for the occasion the new trailer and poster have arrived. With a series dedicated to the French filmmaker underway at Metrograph, a release of The Strangler will kick off at Anthology Film Archives starting November 15, then expand to Los Angeles, Austin, Chicago, Denver, San Francisco, and beyond.
Here’s the synopsis: “An unconventional French giallo released before the sub-genre’s popularity boom resulting from filmmakers like Dario Argento and Lucio Fulci, The Strangler centers on Émile, a handsome young man targeting women he believes are too depressed to go on living. As multiple women fall to Émile’s suffocating white scarf,...

There are a lot of niche horror genres, from Lovecraft riffs and zombie movies to body horror. But maybe no horror genre is more niche and simultaneously more historically important than the giallo films that took Italy by storm in the 1970s.
Not exactly a defined film movement, giallo originated in the world of literature. In Italy, a giallo novel is any crime or mystery fiction story, with the name (the word means “yellow” in Italian) coming from the 1929 series of pulp novels “Il Giallo Mondadori.” Before the 1960s, a giallo film was a literal adaptation of a giallo novel, but the term soon shifted to apply to a type of film from auteurs like Mario Bava, Dario Argento, and Lucio Fulci that took the crime and mystery stories and applied a new, stylish, and violent bent to them.

Cemetery of Terror – AMC+, Shudder
Rubén Galindo Jr.’s most prominent horror feature is the American-influenced Don’t Panic (available on Shudder), but the Halloween-centric Cemetery of Terror offers the most fun. A trio of college kids decides to impress their ladies by stealing a body from a morgue for a Halloween prank and party in an abandoned house.

Desperate for work, Derek (Maffei) accepts a job replacing his recently-deceased friend at a tech startup. When Evil Lurks Review: A Cruel, Bloody Possession Movie For Sickos, By Sickos [Fantastic Fest 2023]
Possession movies, much like zombie movies, are a dime a dozen. They follow most of the same tropes and aesthetics established in part by William Friedkin's "The Exorcist." This is to say, there are not many movies that can make the sub-genre feel fresh.
"When Evil Lurks" is one such movie. Demián Rugna's follow-up to "Terrified" is a bigger, more ambitious movie, and one that is quite cruel and gory. Most impressively, the film has quite a robust worldbuilding that becomes more complex and terrifying as the film reveals more. There's not much in terms of exposition, but you know just enough about what is going on beyond our protagonist to be interested in learning about this messed-up, bleak, Fulci-esque nightmare world where no adult, child, or dog is safe.

"I've seen it with my own eyes! I was with it!" IFC Films has debuted the main official trailer for a super scary indie horror film titled When Evil Lurks, which just premiered at TIFF recently. After playing there, it's heading to Fantastic Fest and Sitges next this fall - for all horror fans everywhere. A wildly original take on the possession film, When Evil Lurks is a shocking supernatural thriller from Argentine master of horror, writer-director Demián Rugna (Terrified). In a remote village, two brothers find a demon-infected man just about to give birth to evil itself. They decide to get rid him but merely succeed in helping him to deliver the inferno. The indie horror film stars Ezequiel Rodríguez, Eduardo Salomón, and Silvia Sabater. TIFF adds that it has "a brutality that recalls the gory extremities of Lucio Fulci's City of the Living Dead and the hopeless...

Terrified director Demian Rugna‘s new horror film When Evil Lurks drew comparisons to John Carpenter’s Apocalypse Trilogy and Lucio Fulci’s City of the Living Dead when it was screened at the Toronto International Film Festival – which are some excellent movies to be compared to. A wider audience will get the chance to see When Evil Lurks when IFC Films gives it a theatrical release on October 6th, putting it in direct competition with the Universal Pictures release of The Exorcist: Believer. Three weeks later, on October 27th, the film will also be available to watch on the Shudder streaming service.
According to Variety, When Evil Lurks deals with “timeless horror concepts” while “adding contemporary twists”. Scripted by Rugna, the story plays out in a remote village where two brothers find a demon-infected man just about to give birth to evil itself. In a time when exorcism looks...
