Oppenheimer (2023)
Nolan Cinematic Brilliance Makes Oppenheimer a highlight of 2023
Taking a turn from his usual style of filmmaking, Nolan this time, has ventured into a biopic drama. Needless to say, he has excelled in this well, making a well rounded film.
Oppenheimer is not only about how the atomic bomb came into being, but also a character study. The film skilfully depicts the vested political interests behind the making of a bomb, how a physicist gets embroiled in it and is made to use his discovery for mass destruction, and the inner turmoil of the character when he witnesses the aftermath left behind.
Many scenes here are noteworthy, apart from the bomb testing scene. The dialogues also need to be mentioned here, not just "Now I am become Death..." which gained huge popularity.
Special mention to the supporting cast here which fulfilled their roles to perfection. Florence Pugh, Emily Blunt, Matt Damon deserve a special mention. Also, the unforgettable Robert Downey Jr. And Rami Malek. They will remain with you till the end.
Last but not the least, there is no movie without Cilian Murphy and his eyes. They convey everything.
Know that Oppenheimer is worth every appreciation it gets. 3 hours fly by effortlessly, while you're completely immersed. If this film made me write a review on IMDb after many years, it proves that it is worth writing about :)
The Zoya Factor (2019)
The 'Zero' Factor
The film, meant to be light and frothy, takes absolutely no effort to be brainy. The plot is extremely oversimplified, to the point of being downright silly.
The story is about Zoya (Sonam Kapoor), a junior copywriter, who is unable to get anything right, from advertising assignments to her life.
Her father and army brother, both cricket fanatics, consider Zoya to be lucky for cricket, just because she was born on the day India won the 1983 World Cup.
Cut to the present day Indian team, struggling to keep the boat afloat, with scattered team players, is the team India captain Nikhil Khoda (Dulquer Salman) . 90% of his job exists to boost the team's morale, or flex his muscles and abs. His rival, Robin (Angad Bedi), wants his captaincy and would do anything to malign his name.
Enter Zoya on a Pepsi ad- shoot(blatant integration of brands, coz advertising), where she enters the captain's life, and things turn around for her. She becomes the lucky mascot for the team, which Nikhil is dead against.
One positive aspect though: that there is some light thrown on superstition is India, among all strata of society, and the surrounding hype.
Otherwise, DQ's perfect, drool worthy abs and Sonam's batting eyelashes have nothing much to prove. One extra star for DQ's abs...which he maintains to this day.
Avengers: Endgame (2019)
The meaning of Perfect?- Avengers Endgame
Avengers Endgame follows the events 23 days after Thanos did the 'big snap'. The remaining Avengers are shattered and broken, with Tony Stark stuck in space. Nobody has a clue how to bring the others back or kill the ultimate super-villain. How will this end though? - With ABSOLUTE perfection.
The culmination of the 21 Marvel movies ends ties the knots into a perfect little bow, with of course some heartbreaking losses. The ending, without post-credits too, is very satisfying. Russo brothers add a dramatic punch to the 3 hour storyline, as well as plenty of humour in the first half. The second half however, is action packed, and emotions run sky-high. The end will and has shattered me, as well as brought a ray of hope along with it.
Although jumping with the timelines, catching up with old times can be confusing, and it has stretched the movie a tad bit, but that's the idea. Of bringing a conclusion. Which it does. Who knew even end credits could also be so satisfying? Some actors do get a better screentime, although I found the distribution better than Infinity War. The whistles, shrieking, whooping, occasional sniffling and clapping throughout the entire length of the movie is proof enough of how EPIC the film is. The film is a roller coaster of emotions, funny in one. exhilarating in the next, and emotional in the end. No questions about the set design, action and special effects, it's larger than life and top-notch
It's a tearjerker, and bound to leave a void, but its feels like a good conclusion. It's a lot to take in, for sure. Did I mention how many times I said the word satisfying?
I swear, MCU will never be the same without Avengers. Love you 3000.

Manto (2018)
Someone who lived in Lahore, but his heart remained in Bombay
A film based on the celebrated writer Saadat Hasan Manto is as riveting and overwhelmingly haunting as his work. Like Manto's stories, this film never fails to give goosebumps.
Blending seamlessly between the depiction of some of Manto's stories like Ten Rupees, Khol Do, Thanda Gosht and Toba Tek Singh and his life, the film adds extreme depth and an insight to Manto's thinking. Set in the pre-partition era, that is, mid 1940s and 1950s Manto transports you to that era, the life in Mumbai(then Bombay), and Lahore, Bombay film sets and coffee shops, rickety magazine offices, courts, gardens, hooded convertibles and tongas in the sepia coloured tones. The film also grasps the intellectual conversations between Manto and Ismat Chughtai (Rajshri Deshpande) well.
Nawazuddin Siddiqui has embodied the character of Manto. With that I mean, he IS Manto in the film. He is backed by an equally talented cast, with his wife Safiya(Rasika Dugal), who portrays a controlled and strong demeanour, his dear friend and actor Shyam(Tahir Bhasin), and a host of talented actors in special appearances.
Divided like the fonts used in the film, Siddiqui brings out the inner divide, conflict, the hidden rage, the disgust, the hurt, the inner turmoil, the helplessness and fear, the urge to write the truth along with managing his household, the continuous court appearances to perfection. The hurt and regret speaks volumes with his incessant cigarette puffs and chugging of alcohol.
With memorable dialogues and truthful portrayal of the characters, this is one of the films which will talked about for years.
Worth watching a 100 times. The only fault? - The film got over too soon.
Insatiable (2018)
Insatiable? Yes, I'm left for more
What starts off as a seemingly teenagy- topic- Patty, a high schooler who has been bullied and fat shamed her entire life has lost 70 pounds over the summer, thanks to her jaw being wired shut by a punch from a homeless man. She returns thin and "pretty" , and now she wishes to take revenge upon those who did her wrong: by participating in beauty pageants. The show takes quite a dark twist later on.
She is backed by Bob Armstrong, a lawyer/ pageant coach who has recently lost his reputation. Together, they try to right the wrong, but end up doing up more wrong.
This issue not only deals with fat shaming and bullying, it also deals with sexuality, class divide, fake imagery, ambition, drug abuse, superstitions and individuality. The characters are flaky, shaky and believe more on the external image". What happens is, Insatiable touches upon every topic, but solves none. The teenagy topic turns into a "dark-comedy", which is mostly dark. It tries to boldly highlight these issues, but end up being a part of the same. The protagonist is impulsive, almost to the extent to being violent and spiteful, and provides theories in her own twisted way. Somehow, this series needs to delve deeper, and solve more. Although, it is binge-able.
Next season, maybe. Next season .
Raazi (2018)
Engaging and heartfelt
I saw Raazi, just few days after it came out, and I didn't regret it. This is a story which is enthralling, engaging and heartfelt at the same time.
Alia Bhatt stars as Sehmat Khan, the shy, sensitive daughter of an ailing businessman Hidayat Khan(Rajit Kapoor). On hearing about the imminent war looming over India and its lasting effects during 1971, he decides to train his daughter as a spy and send her to Pakistan by marrying her off to his longtime friend Parvez Syed's(Shishir Kumar) younger son, Iqbal(Vicky Kaushal) . Her task would be to gain the innermost information about the war. It is indeed endearing to watch Sehmat transform form a sensitive college student to a bold, fearless and a trusted spy.
Based on a novel, "Calling Sehmat" written by Harinder Sikka, which is based on a true story, the direction given by Meghna Gulzar is tight and engaging, and manages to keep you, if not on the edge of the seat, but intrigued, nevertheless. A stellar performance given by the supporting cast, Jaideep Alhawat(Khaled Mir), Arif Zakaria(Abdul),Vicky Kaushal(Iqbal Syed), Shishir Sharma(Parvez Syed), Amruta Khanvilkar(Munir) make up for am exciting yet heartfelt period thriller. The songs do not incessantly bring out the patriotism in every scene, but it is subtle, and will stay with you for long. It is a story dedicated to those unsung heroes whose names are never written in history.
Avengers: Infinity War (2018)
Exceeds Expectations to Infinity
Avergers: Infinity War is a culmination of Marvel Superheroes from the MCU, and this is by far, my favourite. The Russo brothers did a fantastic job of holding the audience's attention till the end credits and manged to provide a cliffhanger there too. It HAS lived up to the hype.
The story, as most of you will know, is about the mightiest villain Thanos, who is invading planets from the existing universe in search of Infinity Stones, a set of extremely powerful gems which will help Thanos being all-powerful. It is up to the Avengers to protect them and if possible, take them from Thanos.
The action sequences: Larger than life will be an understatement. Watching in 3D is the most amazing experience one can have. Every time, the action offers something new. Every Marvel superhero has their signature style, with hyped features and fight sequences. It is a joy to watch that onscreen. But, Infinity War is not just about actions, it has emotions, and comedy sprinkled in too. That's what makes it stand out from the rest.
That being said, handling a movie with so many superheroes, which stretches for more than 2 hours, has not been divided proportionately. Iron Man and Dr.Strange get the lion's share, next is Thor and the Guardians. Hulk is a surprise and gem. Watch, you'll understand. Although, we hardly see Black Panther, Bucky Barnes, Falcon and Black Widow kick some villains, barring 1 scene. But, I'm still OK with it.
The ending left me like, "I've to wait till 2019 now??"
Before We Go (2014)
A Night Can Change Your Life
I want to clarify in the beginning that I haven't seen the 'Before' Trilogy, so cannot draw parallels with 'Before Sunrise'. I will review it as a standalone. That said, I'll dive into it.
Before We Go is the directorial debut of Chris Evans, who does a very decent job, I must say. The story revolves around Nick Vaughn(Chris Evans), a street musician and Brooke Dalton(Alice Eve), a painter. Both of them meet at a chance encounter at the Grand Central Station in New York, when Brooke misses her last train and she has no way to return back home (her purse gets stolen). Nick is packing his trumpet for the day, and readying himself for a jazz audition the next day. The station is closed and Brooke is left stranded. Nick lends a helping hand, and together, they spend the night roaming in the streets of New York, singing in marriage receptions, on trains, at a seers house and coffee shops.
The chemistry between the leads is not an immediate spark and flame, but is palpable and slow burning. The movie explores the perceptions of life, loss and love. Nick is left questioning about true love, while Brooke on her ruining marriage. The strangers who started off as being friendly, landed on spilling each others innermost secrets, turned each other's advisers and ended up as support. I honestly liked the way Evans handled the take on love: delicately, with meaningful perception and dialogue. Well, as Nick says, "It is possible to love two people in a lifetime."
Wouldn't mind a sequel of this indie drama.
Padmaavat (2018)
Visually mesmerising
Sanjay Leela Bhansali strikes yet another visually mesmerising sight with the 2hr 43min Padmaavat. Spread across Afghanisthan, Singhal and Rajasthan, each and every frame of the movie is visually stunning and is a treat for the eyes, including the actors, who look flawless.
As for the actors in the film, Rani Padmavati(Deepika Padukone) puts up a good performance, with amazing dialogues. However, I expected some more screentime from her, and an even grittier performance. She looks bold and beautiful, but her real performance shone at the climax, which was again blown a tad too much, I felt.
Ranveer Singh gives a brilliant performance once more as Allaudin Khilji. He portrays the vociferous, eccentric and ruthlessness of the character with ease, and nails it in every frame. Every slight action of his oozes out his character. His best so far.
Raja Ratan Singh(Shahid Kapoor) is simply brilliant as the valiant king of Mewar. His bravery shone in his eyes, and dialogue delivery was on point. Why was he given such a small screentime? Was expecting to see him much more. He was simply amazing.
Also, the movie stretched a tad bit long, and Shahid and Deepika's chemistry faltered.
Somehow left for more
Beauty and the Beast (2017)
A visually mesmerizing movie
First and foremost, this movie is visually stunning. From the beginning to the end. Disney has done an amazing job of keeping everything seem so alive, and alarmingly terrifying at times.
This is a story about Belle, who is a well read town girl and wants something more than "this provincial life". She eventually steps into Beast, who is a prince cursed by an enchantress. He has time to reverse himself until the last petal of an enchanted rose falls. In the meanwhile, Belle is continuously wooed by all-brawn-and-no-brain Gaston, who has an evil intention of killing the Beast and forcibly marrying Belle. Love is slowly blossoming between Belle and the Beast, but will it be enough to break the curse?
All the characters in the story have blended nicely with an amazing cast. As I have said before, the visuals were stunning, and so were the ballads performed throughout the musical. A 3D experience is phenomenal, and kind of required.
Hotel Transylvania 2 (2015)
A hilarious, sweet sequel
This movie starts where the earlier one left off. Johnny(Andy Samberg) and Mavis(Selena Gomez) are finally settled and sharing a great rapport with Dracula(Adam Sandler) and the other monsters in Hotel Transylvania. They have a baby boy Dennis, who is a half human, half vampire. Now, as a grandfather, Drac is desperate to make Dennis into a vampire before he turns 5, in order to keep Mavis in the hotel. The methods he applies to bring out the monster in him is hilarious. Though the other monsters are reluctant, Drac is hell bent to see his grandson's fangs pop out. That is an absolute delight to watch.
The film maintains that the monsters are afraid of humans and Drac is a rigid disciplinarian. It also portrays the challenges of the latest technology that the older generation face. All in all, a good sequel and a fun watch for people of all ages:)
Jerry Maguire (1996)
Not only a sports film, but so much more
Jerry Maguire(Tom Cruise) is an on-demand sports agent, managing the world's best players, drawing huge amounts of money with the contracts and living a lavish life. Suddenly one night he realizes that the life he is living is artificial and unethical. So, he decides to pen down all his experiences and distributes them in the office. But in turn, he gets fired from the job and loses all his clients to his rival Bob Sugar(Jay Mohr). Now he has to make do with Dorothy Boyd(Renee Zellweger) the only employee who sticks with him and only one client Rod Tidwell(Cuba Gooding Jr.), a football player with needs to regain his fame soon.
This film not only focuses on sports but this dramatic story explores the philosophies of life and captures human feelings deftly. The emotional highs and lows of Jerry, the desperation of Rod and his family, the vulnerability of Dorothy, and the childlike joy of Ray(Jonathan Lipnicki).
With some unforgettable dialogues and memorable performances by all actors, this film just cannot be missed.
Miss Congeniality (2000)
Sandra Bullock steals the show
Gracie Hart (Sandra Bullock) is a tough-as nails FBI agent, quite capable in her field but lacking everywhere else. When a mission goes awry, she is forced to go undercover as a contestant in Miss United States Beauty Pageant in order to prove her worth. Now this is especially difficult for those cops(in this case Gracie) who lacks all "feminine graces."
Here Gracie is not one of those 'cool' cops who can pin her hair with one hand and stab the enemy with the other. She is the one who can match her male colleagues in boxing, makes witty comments, wears baggy jeans, cannot manage her unruly hair, cannot walk in heels, chews loudly, and snorts when she laughs. Sandra Bullock is effortlessly good as Gracie and steals the show with her over-the top antics. She provides all the laughs in the movie.
As for the story line, well, it is not as amazing as Sandra. It is pretty entertaining to watch her. You can overlook the story line when she comes on screen.
Rating: 6.5/10
The Switch (2010)
A mature take on romance
Kassie Larson(Jennifer Aniston)is a 40 year old successful woman who has been unlucky in love, decides to get pregnant through artificial insemination.Although her best friend Wally Mars(Jason Bateman) vehemently denies her choice, whom she confides everything she goes ahead with it anyway. Roland(Patrick Wilson) decides to be the donor for some money. Seven years later, Wally meets Kassie with her son Sebastian, who resembles surprisingly like him.
This film has a refreshing take on romance. Hence the situations, and the decisions are not childlike but mature. I liked Wally's sharp, practical and sarcastic view on things. What was more likable was the warm and tender relationship between Sebastian and Wally. He was the highlight of the entire film. His sharp mind provided some witty gags. And what would life be without friends, who advise and guide our choices every time? Here, they play an important role.
All in all, an unexpectedly satisfying mature romantic comedy.
Top Gun (1986)
A movie that is 'just so COOOOL'
After watching this film twice now,I found just one word to describe it: 'COOL'. Everything in this movie is just so cool and awesome: the characters, the story, the stunts, the dialogues...everything. (Though I would admit the dialogues are slightly over the top in some places, but then again, you don't have those memorable quotes for nothing.)
Pete "Maverick" Mitchell(Tom Cruise) is one of the best fighter pilots in the navy, and aspires to be the Top Gun. Often performing dangerous stunts, almost nothing in the world can affect the undaunted and reckless lad. What I absolutely loved about Maverick is his attitude. Whether it be daredevil flying, trying to impress a girl by singing, quoting cheesy dialogues, riding a motorcycle, playing volleyball, being unruffled by rivals, or showing loyalty towards his friends. He shines throughout. Goose(Anthony Edwards) shows true faithfulness till the end. And that is a rare thing to see. Iceman(Val Kilmer) and Slider(Rick Rossovich) just elevate the movie by being the perfect rivals. And nonetheless, the unforgettable chemistry between Charlie(Kelly McGilles) and Maverick.
It has some astounding fighter pilot combat stunts with some stunning visuals. Being too critical about the plot, or trying to find technical faults with the film will not be enjoyable. This movie about a fighter pilot's life is just too cool to be missed.
Interview with the Vampire: The Vampire Chronicles (1994)
One of the good vampire movies of the generation
Rating: 7.5/10.
This film narrates the life of a plantation lord, Louis(Brad Pitt), a 200 year old vampire. He describes his life before being a vampire, and his journey after being a vampire in the form of an interview.
Brad Pitt as Louis, is undoubtedly, the hero of the film. Although he is a vampire, who lives on other people's blood, he shows his human side of love, pity, sacrifice and compassion through the film. Exactly as a protagonist should be. However, he broods and sulks. He looks forever depressed.
Tom Cruise as Lestat, the arrogant, egoistic, ruthless, ever immortal blood sucking monster , stole the show. He completely NAILED the character of Lestat. The others also played their roles convincingly. Special mention to Claudia(Kristen Dunst) who played a mature role at such young age.The dialogues are quite dramatic, and some are worth remembering. All in all, quite an entertaining film.
Eyes Wide Shut (1999)
A classic thriller with many different meanings
Based on the 1926 novel 'Traumnovelle' by Austrian author, director Stanley Kubric changes the setting to fit the 90's New York keeping the flavour same. New York city doctor William Harford aka Bill (Tom Cruise) is successful in his profession, has married a former art curator Alice and has a beautiful 7 year old daughter Helena. All is picture perfect until Alice reveals that she was not perfectly loyal to her husband, and that she fantasized about a naval officer who she had just seen, but never even talked. She was ready to give up everything just for being with him for one afternoon, but instead, returned to her husband. And that she continues fantasizing about him. Learning about the near-infidelity of his wife, Bill is determined to find the thrill of having a relationship with someone else and sets out to do just the same. For that, he is prepared to go to any lengths, including the one which will prove to be a threat for his life, and his family.
This movie has many layers, and includes the portrayal of many characters who are a part of Bill's journey. This is no blood or gore. Instead, it takes the classic route of a thriller, and mostly relies on human psychology. Accordingly, this movie cannot be specifically categorized as a thriller, suspense or classic. This is a mixture of all three. The entire film explores the relationships between humans, especially couples, and just how their mind can waver. It poses a question that how lethal is infidelity? Is near- infidelity equally dangerous? As this film basically is about sexual fantasies and obsession, few of the scenes are slightly cringe-worthy. (It received an R rating, so.. you might just want to keep your 'eyes wide SHUT').The attention paid to minute details is worth watching. This is a slow paced, dramatic movie, with ominous piano music in the background, so you will need plenty of patience to reach the conclusion. Also this movie depends heavily on psychology, so it is filled with ambiguous meanings. So interpret in your own way. However, compared to the powerful beginning, the ending slightly wavers. But it is an equally thought provoking one. After this movie ends, you might just continue thinking, untangling the chain of events. This one is completely different.
The Wedding Singer (1998)
A sweet, musical comedy
Robbie Hart(Adam Sandler) is a singer who earns money by performing various gigs in weddings soon marrying his childhood sweetheart Linda. Julia(Drew Barrymore) is a waitress soon marrying a rich, successful man, Glenn. Both Robbie and Julia meet each other in wedding parties, promising to be of help to each other during their own weddings. But future has other plans in store for them during this journey.
Sometimes, a dose of sweetness is required in our lives. And this movie provides just that. It is a sweet, romantic story filled with music, with a hint of sadness and the right amount of comedy. You will not mind watching some predictable moments thrown in too.
It is a delight to watch both Adam Sandlers and Drew Barrymore. A sweet 6.5/10 :)
Playing It Cool (2014)
Chris Evans in a different avatar
It was refreshing to see Chris Evans portray this kind of role after quite some time. He is a screenplay writer who is forced to write a rom-com. He is a person who doesn't believe in love after a traumatic incident involving his mother. He believes his life is perfectly fine with his bunch of friends, his grandfather, and occasional flings. He has a deadline coming up, his agent is pressurizing him, and he has no clue what to do. He has a severe writer's block until he meets her at a charity event. Love at first sight for him. A friend and support for her. He confesses his love, but she is already engaged. Now, it is up to him to fight or let go. There are a few laughs here and there throughout the movie.Chris Evans keeps the energy and spunk alive. Michelle also plays her part well, as the girl torn between love and stability. On the flip-side, I found the story clichéd in some places. On an afterthought, quite a treat if you are a Chris Evans fan.
Knight and Day (2010)
An entertaining film
June Havens'(Cameron Diaz) life turns upside down when she meets with secret agent Roy Miller(Tom Cruise) on her way to Boston. Roy is on the run and all the federal agents are after his life. Soon, they realize that the only way out for survival is to depend on each other. Amazing chases, rib smashing fight scenes with absolutely anything on the planet(fists, guns, knives, glasses, seat belts and what not),plenty of comedy and quite a chemistry between the leads. There is absolutely nothing in the world that Roy cannot do. (I feel Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz should make more movies together!) Although most of the action scenes seem a bit too implausible, Tom Cruise manages to pull it off with charisma. Cameron Diaz provides the right amount of laughs with her comic timing. All in all, an entertaining film, if you are looking for a movie with mindless action and some exotic scenery.
Rain Man (1988)
a beautiful drama
Selfish young car dealer Charlie Babbit (Tom Cruise)realizes that he has not inherited the 3 million dollars his father left after his demise. Instead, those 3 million dollars are given away to his brother which he never knew he had. To know more about his new life now , Charlie and his brother travel cross country. This movie has beautiful layers, focusing mainly on emotional bonds, slowly unfold one by one as the movie progresses. Dustin Hoffman(Raymond Babbit)portrays his character excellently. He deserved an Oscar. Tom Cruise plays his role wonderfully too, and his transition is worth watching. All in all, a brilliant movie which will remain close to my heart :)
Vanilla Sky (2001)
A quirky, unpredictable thriller that has plenty of surprises in store.
David Aames Jr.(Tom Cruise) is a successful publishing magnate. This guy has it all- wealth, charm, looks and women. Therefore, he never takes his life seriously until he meets his true love Sophia Serrano (Penelope Cruz). His life changes drastically when he meets with an accident while being in the car with his resentful ex Julie Gianni(Cameron Diaz), that leaves his face hideously disfigured. What follows is a tale of love, loneliness, longing and all the evil tricks that the mind plays. One of Tom Cruise's finest acting, I believe. I too got pulled along with David Aames's emotional tug-of-war. His portrayal of the character is simply amazing. Vanilla Sky is one of the films that is quirky, and unpredictable enough to keep you at the edge of the seat till the end.
