Luc Besson knows how to turn a simple 1 2 3 action step, into a wonderful song & dance. His best work so far will always be LEON:THE PROFESSIONAL. Other great works under his wing is THE FIFTH ELEMENT, KISS OF THE DARGON, and THE TRANSPORTER. Now this is without question Luc's best since LEON, maybe even better.
Danny(Jet Li) has been raised as a dog by a ruthless gangster Bart(Bob Hopkins). Making him become his muscle, until one day at a piano shop, Danny sees a piano and new friend named Sam(Morgan Freeman). For some reason Danny has a sense of humanity and wants that back badly. So like dog running away from an abused owner, he goes back to the piano shop only to be found by Sam. Now he lives with Sam and his stepdaughter Victora (Kerry Condon), together they help rekindle what Danny has been missing all along.... LOVE. Just as everything couldn't seem better , an old friend comes to visit.
What makes this movie so great and powerful is not the action scenes, even though there are the most powerful and realistic I have ever seen, is the drama side of the story. And no it dosen't try too hard to be sad at scenes, because it is and it has all the right actors to make it effective. If they would have released it during Oscar season this year, the three leads especially Li would of had nominations. And the human side of the story is a gift of heartwarming love, while the action side of the story is so brutal, it's disturbingly real. When Li recovers his humanity, it is not only funny but sad; in a good way. With all the chaos going on at certain scenes, it's hard to believe that can from the same scene. For example; the scene where Bob Hopkins shines in a darkly moving scene about Danny coming home and then violence burst out of nowhere. It seems standard, but as I said the drama of this movie is real and so as the violence. Which is why I said it's a unique mix of drama storytelling mix with brutal violence.
