Today, Apple TV+ announced that Sunny, its 10-episode mystery thriller with a darkly comic bent, is set to premiere globally with the first two episodes on Wednesday, July 10, 2024, followed by new episodes every Wednesday through September 4.
Created by Katie Robbins, who also serves as showrunner, and executive producer and director Lucy Tcherniak, Sunny stars Emmy Award nominee multi-hyphenate Rashida Jones.
Jones also serves as executive producer, along with stars Hidetoshi Nishijima, Joanna Sotomura, Judy Ongg, You, Annie the Clumsy, and Jun Kunimura.
Sunny stars Jones as Suzie, an American woman living in Kyoto, Japan, whose life is upended when her husband and son disappear in a mysterious plane crash. As “consolation,” she’s given Sunny, which is one of a new class of domestic robots made by her husband’s electronics company.
Though Suzie initially resents Sunny’s attempts to fill the void in her life, they gradually develop an unexpected friendship.

Remember that action flick from 1989, Road House? With its gritty actions and cool characters, especially Patrick Swayze in the lead bouncer, the movie was a big hit. And now, it has gotten a reboot! MGM and Silver Picture dropped the remake on March 8, 2024, with Doug Liman directing and starring Jake Gyllenhaal in the Swayze’s shoes.
Jake Gyllenhaal and Conor McGregor in Road House
But we should not fail to remember the Og cast. They were top-notch, right? Sure, the remake is guaranteed to feature an excellent supporting cast, but it’s cool to see where the old team ended up.
Some are still kicking it in Hollywood, while others have sadly passed on. Either way, they left their mark. So, let’s catch up with the Road House crew and find out what they’ve been up to since the original movie rocked theaters.

Sofia Coppola continues to shed light on her unrealized adaptation of Edith Wharton’s “The Custom of the Country,” which she was developing as a five-episode series for Apple TV+. In a new interview with the New Yorker, it’s revealed for the first time that Coppola had cast Oscar nominee Florence Pugh to star in the lead role of Undine Spragg, a Midwestern girl who attempts to ascend in New York City society.
News broke in May 2020 that Sofia Coppola was partnering with Apple TV+ on “The Custom of the Country.” By the end of 2021, the project was killed.
“They pulled our funding,” Coppola said. “It’s a real drag. I thought they had endless resources.”
Coppola’s series was not going to come cheap. Her most expensive film was 2006’s “Marie Antoinette,” which had a production budget of $45 million. The director said she was planning “Custom” to be “five ‘Marie Antoinettes.

Marlon Wayans is ready to look at the scary side of perfection. The actor and comedian will star as an all-time great athlete in Goat, a psychological horror film from Jordan Peele’s Monkeypaw Productions and Universal, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.
The film centers on an up-and-coming young athlete who is invited to train with a team’s retiring star, who will be played by Wayans. Justin Tipping will direct the feature, which came out of a pitch from Zack Akers and Skip Bronkie. Peele will produce along with Win Rosenfeld, Ian Cooper and Jamal Watson.
Wayans is coming off of work in Ben Affleck’s awards contender Air, about Nike’s quest to sign a young Michael Jordan, with other acting credits in recent years including the Aretha Franklin biopic Respect and Sofia Coppola’s On the Rocks. He came up with comedic roles, such as on the...

Exclusive: For their sports horror pic Goat, Universal Pictures and Jordan Peele’s Monkeypaw banner looked to have found the actor to play their greatest of all time athlete as Deadline is hearing Marlon Wayans is set to star in in the pic. Justin Tipping is on board to direct the pic which is produced by Jordan Peele, Win Rosenfeld, Ian Cooper, and Jamal Watson. Executive producers are David Kern and Kate Oh.
The project, based on a pitch by Zack Akers and Skip Bronkie, centers on a promising young athlete who is invited to train with a team’s retiring star.
While execs have taken the screen testing route for finding the young athlete character, sources say Wayans was always top of the studio’s list for its titular character. Exec Vice President of Production Development Sara Scott and Director of Development Tony Ducret will oversee the project for the Studio.

Sofia Coppola may come from film royalty, but she’s an artist all her own.
The daughter of Francis Ford Coppola, Sofia Coppola began her career as an infant — appearing as the newborn baby of Connie (Talia Shire) in the baptism scene of “The Godfather.” From there, she had a supporting role in his films “Peggy Sue Got Married” and the third “Godfather” film, filling in for the latter after original star Winona Ryder dropped out. Moving over to directing as an adult, she stunned critics with her 1999 debut feature “The Virgin Suicides,” an adaptation of Jeffrey Eugenides’ book about five mysterious sisters and their troubled home lives.
“The Virgin Suicides” was one of the most acclaimed indie films of the ‘90s, and established the visual style (a soft color palette and dreamy cinematography) as well as the thematic content that would define Coppola’s career, while teaming her up...

We knew A24 had a decision to make on its streaming ambitions. The indie distributor’s output deal with Showtime, struck in 2019, expired in November, leaving A24’s movies without a dedicated digital home. Free agency can be quite lucrative.
Weeks later, A24 signed with Showtime’s biggest rival, HBO, and its sister streaming service Max. Upgrade.
A December 6 announcement unveiled a multiyear, pay-1 output deal for new A24 theatrical movies to run exclusively on HBO and Cinemax, and stream only on Max. The deal also extended A24’s 2022 licensing agreement with Max for older films, which covered more than two dozen movies.
Some of the newer A24 fare heading to the Warner Bros. Discovery platforms in the pay-1 window include 2023 theatrical releases “Past Lives,” “Dicks: The Musical,” “Priscilla,” “Dream Scenario,” “The Zone of Interest,” “The Iron Claw,” and the restored re-release of Talking Heads concert film “Stop Making Sense.

After the Southern Gothic thriller elements of 2017’s The Beguiled and the broad rom-com antics of 2020’s On the Rocks, which saw Sofia Coppola departing slightly from the aesthetic territory that she’d staked so forcefully in her earlier work, Priscilla finds the filmmaker firmly back in her wheelhouse. Based on Priscilla Presley’s 1985 biography Elvis and Me, Coppola’s latest is another impossibly photogenic tale of fame, solitude, material wealth, and female desire in a world that often contrives to deny its existence. In conjunction with the film’s release, we ranked all of Coppola’s features to date. David Robb

Sofia Coppola movies are defined by desolate landscapes, lonely characters, a wry sense of humor, and painterly compositions. For fans of this aesthetic, it’s pretty hard to get it wrong, and Coppola’s nearly 20-year track record attests to the consistency of her talent. From her feature-length debut “The Virgin Suicides” through “Priscilla,” Coppola’s dreamlike visuals and deadpan tone have remained a distinctive voice in American cinema, one filled with gentle, forlorn faces and a world that always seems as though it’s on the verge of devouring them whole.
While Coppola’s career was set in motion to some degree by the influence of a very famous father, her filmmaking capabilities are hardly dictated by Francis’ accomplishments. The tough, masculine sagas of “The Godfather” and “Apocalypse Now” exist a world away from Sofia Coppola’s intimate portraits — all of which, it must be said, feature strong-willed women.

Announced way back in May 2020, Sofia Coppola’s “The Custom of the Country” was expected to be the filmmaker’s next big project with Apple, after her film, “On the Rocks.” Unfortunately, as the years have passed, it’s clear Coppola moved on, filming “Priscilla,” and now, we have an idea why.

News broke in May 2020 that Sofia Coppola was partnering with Apple TV+ to develop a series adaptation of Edith Wharton’s 1913 novel “The Custom of the Country.” Three years later, the project is dead. Why? In a new interview with The New York Times, Coppola claimed that Apple execs did not want to spend the money on her five-hour adaptation due to issues they had with the main character.
“The idea of an unlikable woman wasn’t their thing,” Coppola said. “But that’s what I’m saying about who’s in charge.”
“The people in charge of giving money are usually straight men, still,” she said earlier in the interview. “There’s always people in lower levels who are like myself, but then the bosses have a certain sensibility… If it’s so hard for me to get financing as an established person, I worry about younger women starting out.

Next weekend will seemingly be one of the more quiet weekends at the box office of the fall season. While several new releases are indeed hitting theaters, it's sort of a calm before the storm before "The Marvels" arrives. But if there is one movie that seems like it could have a possible breakout run (relatively speaking), it's A24's "Priscilla." Directed by Sofia Coppola, the film will focus on the life of Priscilla Presley, the wife of Elvis Presley, one of the most beloved musicians of all time. Will that connection to the king of rock 'n roll translate to ticket sales? That's the big question.
Official box office tracking has not been revealed for the film, and it often isn't a thing at all for smaller movies. That said, the folks at Box Office Pro have "Priscilla" taking in anywhere between $3 and $8 million on opening weekend. Complicating matters...

Sofia Coppola, famously known for directing films like Lost in Translation, On the Rocks, and soon, the already-controversial biopic Priscilla, is opening up about projects she’s allowed to fall to the wayside. Typically associated with high-brow dramas and clever comedies, Coppola’s name is enough to catch the eye of most cinephiles, but it’s the quality of her work that truly speaks for her talents behind the camera.
Sofia Coppola’s Priscilla premiered at the 80th Venice International Film Festival in September to a seven-and-a-half-minute standing ovation, celebrating the filmmaker’s emotional portrayal of Elvis and Priscilla Presley’s complex relationship. While discussing the upcoming film with Rolling Stone, Coppola shared stories about projects she passed on for one reason or another, including the final chapter of the Twilight franchise, The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2, and a version of The Little Mermaid.

Sofia Coppola’s Priscilla Presley biopic Priscilla is the centerpiece premiere at the New York Film Festival this evening, but the filmmaker had to miss the movie’s presser today at short notice, sending a note that she is “with her mother.”

Cailee Spaeny and Jacob Elordi are stepping into some iconic shoes as Priscilla and Elvis Presley in Sofia Coppola's adaptation of Priscilla's 1985 memoir, "Elvis and Me." The film, "Priscilla," which Coppola wrote and directed, will be distributed by A24 in North America. "Priscilla" premiered at the Venice Film Festival on Sept. 4, and Priscilla, who serves as an executive producer on the movie, was in attendance as well.
Coppola is known for "The Virgin Suicides" and "Marie Antoinette," and previously worked with A24 on "On the Rocks" and "The Bling Ring." "Priscilla" comes on the heels of Baz Luhrmann's 2022 film "Elvis," which featured Austin Butler as the titular star and Olivia DeJonge as his wife. Butler was nominated for an Oscar for his role.

Every so often, the Film Gods give us the gift of multiple movies about the same subject, but from very different perspectives. A little over a year removed from when Baz Luhrmann dropped his maximalist Elvis musical biopic on us unsuspecting audiences, told predominantly from the title character's point of view (portrayed by heartthrob Austin Butler) and featuring Tom Hanks doing, uh, whatever he was doing, we've been anxiously awaiting filmmaker Sofia Coppola's much more restrained and (likely) more nuanced take on one of the most famous celebrity marriages to ever take the world by storm. Tellingly titled "Priscilla," the upcoming film puts actor Cailee Spaeny in the spotlight as Priscilla Presley, along with Jacob Elordi as the King of Rock and Roll himself.

A24 has released the official trailer for its upcoming Sofia Coppola feature “Priscilla.”
The film is based on Priscilla Presley’s 1985 memoir “Elvis and Me,” which details personal accounts of her relationship with Elvis Presley. Flashes of their first meeting in Bad Nauheim, Germany, in 1959 to their 1967 Las Vegas wedding and birth of their daughter, Lisa Marie, are teased throughout the new footage. The trailer spotlights some of the couple’s most iconic moments together, as well as their eventual divorce.
“Priscilla” stars Cailee Spaeny in the titular role and Jacob Elordi as the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll. The film’s centering of Priscilla’s perspective serves as a sharp counter to Baz Luhrmann’s 2022 biographical music drama “Elvis,” which starred Austin Butler and Olivia DeJonge as the Presleys and went on to receive several Oscar nominations.
“Priscilla” received a seven-minute standing ovation at this year’s Venice Film Festival.

The film charts 14 years in Priscilla’s life, starting at age 14 when she met 24-year-old Elvis.
The film premiered at the Venice Film Festival, where Spaeny won the Volpi Cup for Best Actress, and is set to screen as the Centerpiece feature at the New York Film Festival.
Director Coppola has opened up about how she could relate to Priscilla’s coming-of-age in the public eye.

Sofia Coppola took a seat at New York’s Bookmarc on Sunday to sign copies of her first book, Sofia Coppola Archive: 1999-2023. The event inspired hundreds to hit the sidewalk and queue up for hours in a line that snaked through the West Village streets while fans waited for their chance to meet the filmmaker and snag an autograph. “It was so nice to meet so many young kids that were all dressed up and excited,” Coppola told The Hollywood Reporter on Tuesday night, moments after she arrived to a different kind of scene at L.A.’s Chateau Marmont.
There were plenty of youthful attendees, albeit more famous, a frenzy for Archive and everyone was fashionably suited courtesy of Chanel, which hosted the event to celebrate Coppola’s new tome and toast their longtime ambassador, collaborator and friend. But the only line that formed was the one...

Has Sofia Coppola done it again? The acclaimed writer/director is currently putting together what kids these days would call a "heater," riding high on streak of well-received movies between 2017's remake of "The Beguiled," "On the Rocks" in 2020, and now "Priscilla." The biopic of Priscilla Presley, Elvis' wife and a thoroughly compelling firebrand in her own right, stars Cailee Spaeny as the title character opposite Jacob Elordi as the famous singer. Marking a stark departure from director Baz Luhrmann's approach in last year's "Elvis," Coppola set out to tell the story from the perspective of someone who hasn't really received much of a spotlight in history, rather than confining a figure as important as Priscilla to a bit role or a supporting player on the margins.

“Priscilla” premiered at the 2023 Venice Film Festival on Monday, September 4. Written and directed by Oscar winner Sofia Coppola – who won for her original screenplay of “Lost in Translation” in 2004 – it’s her first film since “On the Rocks” in 2020. The A24 release “Priscilla” is adapted from Priscilla Beaulieu Presley’s acclaimed 1985 memoir “Elvis and Me,” recounting her tumultuous relationship with Elvis Presley from the age of 14 when the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll was at the height of his fame. It’s described, “Through Priscilla’s eyes, Coppola tells the unseen side of a great American myth in Elvis and Priscilla’s long courtship and turbulent marriage, from a German army base to his dream-world estate at Graceland.” As such, it is said to paint a far more nuanced and complex/negative portrayal of Elvis than did last year’s Baz Luhrmann biopic.

Sofia Coppola is focusing on a 20th-century American princess for her first feature since 2020’s “On the Rocks”: Priscilla Presley.
After helming 2006 film “Marie Antoinette,” Coppola takes on adapting Priscilla’s 1985 memoir “Elvis and Me.” The film, titled “Priscilla,” stars “Mare of Easttown” actress Cailee Spaeny as Priscilla and “Euphoria” breakout Jacob Elordi as Elvis Presley.
Per a Deadline source, Spaeny was Coppola’s first choice to portray Priscilla, while “Euphoria” star Elordi auditioned for the role of Elvis. Coppola writes, directs, and produces “Priscilla,” which spans 12 years. Spaeny portrays Priscilla across ages 15 to 27.
Frequent Coppola collaborators cinematographer Philippe Le Sourd, costume designer Stacey Battat, editor Sarah Flack, and production designer Tamara Deverell also signed on to the A24 period piece.

Olivia DeJonge and Austin Butler played the lead roles in Baz Luhrmann’s 2022 biographical music drama “Elvis,” which scored two Golden Globe nominations and one win for Butler’s performance as the iconic singer. The film went on to earn Oscar nominations for best picture, best actor and more.
“Priscilla” marks Coppola’s third collaboration with A24, following 2020’s “On the Rocks” and 2013’s “The Bling Ring.” A series adaptation of Edith Wharton’s “The Custom of the Country” is also in development between A24 and Coppola.

Jacob Elordi is just a hunk of burning love as Elvis Presley.
The “Euphoria” breakout star transforms into the King of Rock ‘n Roll for Sofia Coppola’s adaptation of Priscilla Presley’s 1985 memoir, “Elvis and Me.” Simply titled “Priscilla,” the A24 film stars Cailee Spaeny as the ex-wife of Elvis.
“Priscilla” marks Coppola’s third film with A24 since “On the Rocks” and “The Bling Ring.” The writer-director reunites with collaborators like cinematographer Philippe Le Sourd, costume designer Stacey Battat, editor Sarah Flack, and production designer Tamara Deverell for the period piece.
Coppola recently compared “Priscilla” to her 2006 film “Marie Antoinette,” calling Priscilla herself a “quintessential glamor icon” of Americana style.
“I was just so interested in Priscilla’s story and her perspective on what it all felt like to grow up as a teenager in Graceland,” Coppola said. “She was going through all the stages of young womanhood...

A trailer for "Sharper," the first Apple TV+ original movie of 2023, is here, and it's chock full of stars and advice about stealing. Julianne Moore, Sebastian Stan, John Lithgow, Justice Smith, and newcomer Briana Middleton lead the ensemble cast of this psychological thriller, which continues indie film studio A24's distribution partnership with the streamer.
"Sharper" is directed by Benjamin Caron, who most recently helmed three episodes of the Disney+ series "Andor." The movie is written by Brian Gatewood and Alessandro Tanaka, whose script made the 2020 Black List of the year's best unproduced screenplays.
At the time, the plot of "Sharper" was said to follow what happens when "a chain of scam artists goes after one wealthy family with the perfect plan to drain them of their funds." Complications ensue as "love, heartbreak, and jealousy slither their way into the grand scheme" and "it becomes unclear whether the criminals are...

Step aside Austin Butler, there’s a new Elvis in the building.
Hot off of Butler’s turn as the King of Rock ‘n Roll for Baz Luhrmann’s mind-bending biopic “Elvis,” Jacob Elordi will play the “Jailhouse Rock” crooner for A24 drama “Priscilla.”
Based on Priscilla Presley’s 1985 memoir “Elvis and Me,” the film will be directed by Sofia Coppola and star “Mare of Easttown” breakout Cailee Spaeny as the ex-wife of Elvis. Coppola also adapted Priscilla’s New York Times bestselling memoir for the big screen.
Per a Deadline source, Spaeny was Coppola’s first choice to portray Priscilla, while “Euphoria” star Elordi auditioned for the role of Elvis. The film marks Oscar winner Coppola’s first feature since “On the Rocks” starring Rashida Jones and longtime collaborator Bill Murray. Coppola also produces the film, along with Fremantle Company, American Zoetrope, and Sony’s Stage 6 Films will finance the film.
