After first teasing the costume at the end of February, yesterday saw us finally get a proper look at David Corenswet's Man of Steel in DC Studios and James Gunn's Superman. Unfortunately, the response has been mixed.
That's typically the case with any suit reveal, but the image makes some noteworthy missteps in its presentation that have left some fans concerned with the creative direction of the Dcu.
In this feature, we take a look at those and what the image itself reveals about Superman. From a possible villain tease to the suit's finer, possibly McU-inspired finer details, we're breaking it down for you in as much detail as possible.
So, to find out what we've discovered, simply click on that "Next"/"View List" button below...

We’re deep into 2024 territory as of the time of writing, but our good friends and Deadline have decided to go back to last year and reveal the most profitable box office blockbusters of 2023. It was a short trip down memory lane, but it was done properly because all the numbers were finally in, and there was enough time to objectively interpret the facts and numbers before us. This is why we decided to report on this list.
The list will contain a total of 10 titles and, as you will see, Disney falls short in this list (unlike the box office bombs list), but there are a lot of animated films there and quite a few surprises. This list doesn’t account for the total gross earnings of a movie but speaks about the profit made by the movie based on the budget and the earnings, which is a thing...

Monday Am: Universal’s The Fall Guy has tumbled to $27.7M, this after a lower-than-expected Sunday of $6.9M, -33% from Saturday. Global cume is at $64.4M, a $1M off. Some are worried as to what this lower than expected result means for star power, specifically for Gosling coming off Barbie. The 3x Oscar nominated actor did everything to promote Fall Guy, down to dressing up as Beavis at the Hollywood premiere of the film. Look, as we mentioned, Fall Guy is third highest opening of his career stateside, Barbie being an outlier. Moviegoers in a streaming age are far too sophisticated and deliberate before they leave the house and an original Hollywood stunt-set action film wasn’t worth their time. Perhaps Gosling as a different kind of astronaut than he was in First Man is worth the time in Amazon MGM Studios’ Project Hail Mary. In the end, as of late,...

The 2024 summer box office season kicked off with a whimper over the weekend. Universal's "The Fall Guy," which boasts a cast led by Ryan Gosling ("Barbie") and Emily Blunt ("Oppenheimer"), debuted to a very disappointing $28.5 million domestically. That was, essentially, on par with 2021's "Free Guy," a movie that opened under far worse circumstances as the pandemic was a much larger factor at that time. It's a grim number for a $130 million blockbuster with an A-list cast. So much so that it now ranks as the worst summer season kick-off movie in decades.
No movie from 2004 on has opened lower than $29 million on the first weekend of May. For the last 15 years, we've had a big Marvel movie in theaters to help kick things off with a bang. Last year we had "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3" opening to $118.4 million. It even held quite well and posted a $60.5 million second weekend,...

Look, up in the sky! It’s a bird, it’s a plane – no it’s David Corenswet in our first official look at the actor in full Superman regalia! DC just posted the pic to social media along with the tease, “get ready”, and its official July 11th, 2025 release date. As you can see from the above pic, Corenswet’s Man of Steel seems to be a bit battle-worn, with his costume looking like it went through a bit of a beating. Metropolis is visible behind him, as well as some chaos in the sky, prompting our hero to do something we’ve never really seen him do in a movie so far – suit up!
Indeed, the classic way for Superman to get ready is to spin around in a circle or dive into a phone booth. Here, Corenswet’s version of the character seems to be in a...

With ”The Fall Guy” (Universal), summer 2024 box office didn’t kick off; it just sort of happened. It opened to $28.5 million, a 52 percent drop from last year with “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.” Hopefully, that will be the last precipitous weekend drop (aside from the inevitable “Barbie”/”Oppenheimer” July weekend of $310 million).
This $76 million domestic weekend is bad, but “The Fall Guy” shortfall is worse. Estimates were broad, but worst-case scenarios predicted $30 million. The Ryan Gosling action rom-com had all the earmarks of audience appeal. Whatever its possible limitations — and a $130 million budget — that’s a terrible look to start the summer.
Despite good reviews, Gosling’s momentum, director David Leitch’s proven box office success, the usually lucrative playdate, and a decent A- Cinemascore, “The Fall Guy” opened to only a little more than $3 million above “Civil War” (A24), April’s best opener.

The Fall Guy, Universal’s romantic action comedy starring Ryan Gosling as a stunt man and Emily Blunt as a tentpole director, kicked off summer slightly below expectations on an estimated $28.5m to lead North American box office.
The film had been forecast to open in the low $30m range and Universal executives are looking at the long play and will hope it gathers momentum powered by word of mouth and an A- CinemaScore result.

While the big-screen adaptation of The Fall Guy was never expected to open to mega-blockbuster numbers, no one thought the well-reviewed Ryan Gosling movie would stumble out of the gate to this extent. Indeed, Hollywood insiders assumed this had a shot at a $40 million plus opening (we expected about $35 million). Now it looks like David Leitch’s film will only make $28.5 million over what’s widely considered the first weekend of the summer movie season. Last year, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 made $110 million in the same frame.
The Fall Guy was never expected to open anywhere near that number. Indeed, it was originally planned as a March release, only to be moved thanks to how empty the release calendar is due to the SAG/WGA strikes from last year. It was the ‘80s and ‘90s all over again at the weekend box office. Universal’s The Fall Guy, the Ryan Gosling starrer inspired by the 1980s TV show, kicked off the summer movie season at No. 1 with $28.5 million, while Disney’s re-release of Star Wars: The Phantom Menace surprised by coming in at No. 2 with $8.1 million.
Despite The Fall Guy’s No. 1 finish, its haul came in behind initial expectations of $30 million to $35 million, and overall the box office is down dramatically from the same frame a year ago, when Marvel Studios’ Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 bowed to $118.4 million domestically. The weekend is down 53 percent from last year, and off more than 66 percent from 2022, when Marvel’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness opened to $187.4 million domestically.
The Fall Guy is said to have a net budget of $130 million after tax incentives for shooting in Australia.

2023 was not a good year for Disney at the box office. With the exception of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3, their films lost money according to Deadline’s”2023 Most Valuable Blockbuster Tournament” list by Anthony D’Alessandro. ‘Guardians 3’ was just barely in the top 10 as it was in 9th place. To put this into perspective, tenth place was a “Paw Patrol” film.
In fact, Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour movie beat all the Disney films and “Five Nights at Freddy’s,” which was released theatrically and on streaming simultaneously.
Four Disney films flopped, and ‘The Marvels’ was the biggest loser. Of the bottom five films, only’ The Flash’ was a non-Disney-owned film.
‘The Marvels’
According to Deadline’s estimates, the film lost $237 million, but that is after you add in home entertainment and TV/streaming numbers. That is a lot of money to lose! It would have been worse without Home video and TV/streaming revenue.

The summer box office isn’t exactly starting with a bang. Universal’s action-romance “The Fall Guy,” starring Ryan Gosling as a Hollywood stuntman courting a rising director played by Emily Blunt, earned $10.4 million from 4,002 locations on its opening day, a figure that includes $3 million and change from preview screenings. The feature is now projecting a three-day opening of $28 million, which would leave it short of industry projections that had forecast a debut in the low-to-mid 30’s.
It’s not a great result for Universal, which hasn’t succeeded in getting much traction out of Gosling’s red-hot post-“Barbie” media presence and a bunch of rave reviews for the action film out of a buzzy March premiere at SXSW Festival. With a $130 million production budget, the David Leitch-directed feature doesn’t carry the heavy financial expectations of the summer’s biggest tentpoles, but it’s still got a substantial number to recoup.

The Bear is one of those rare stories that comes along once in a blue moon. It doesn't get by on flashy CG, explosions, or modded-out race cars flying down the streets.
Witty dialogue, high stress, and intense drama fuel this machine, and perhaps that's why so many big-name actors are attracted to its frenzied undercurrents.
Kudos to the creative team assembled under the banner of The Bear. They've created a fantastic ride, thrumming with intensity and entertainment without needing to spend a fortune.
They're clearly doing something right. Series creator Christopher Storer (bolstered by incredible writers like Joanna Calo) nails the pace and character beats while accomplishing a rare feat within the industry, perfecting the art of the cameo appearance.
Cameos are often tricky for several reasons. They tend to disrupt the immersive nature of the story. As a prime example, everyone is still trying to forget Ed Sheeran...

2023 wasn't a good year for superhero movies, with the vast majority of them drawing negative reviews and poor box office returns. One of the most shocking flops, however, was The Marvels.
Captain Marvel made over $1 billion in 2019 and the follow-up saw Carol Danvers paired up with WandaVision's Monica Rambeau and Ms. Marvel's title character. Now, Deadline has crunched the numbers and revealed that The Marvels' $206.1 million global box office haul was worse than we realised.
According to the trade, when all is said and done, the movie made a net loss of $237 million. It's no wonder then that Disney CEO Bob Iger has said Marvel Studios will begin moving away from developing unnecessary sequels.
As for what the future holds in store for these characters, it's hard to say.
Monica will clearly be part of a future Multiversal story after landing in the same reality as the X-Men,...

T.S. Eliot, box office pundit: The wasteland of April was the cruelest month for theaters. To say May will be an improvement damns with faint praise; April was less than $440 million, down 52 percent from 2023. What May really needs is a performance not unlike the one we saw a year ago, when “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” lead the month to just under $800 million total.
To achieve that in 2024, there are five films that must reach their potential. All are positioned to reach $100 million in U.S./Canada, although not necessarily by the end of May.
Perhaps the trickiest one to guess is the “The Fall Guy” (Universal). It has the best start-of-summer date, stars the red-hot Ryan Gosling, and received good reviews, yet the consensus among a range of insiders is it may be only the fourth biggest among May releases.

This weekend marks the official start of the summer movie season. Yeah, I know – it’s still springtime, but if you follow blockbuster movie release dates, you’ll know that May’s always been prime real estate, with many of the biggest money earners of all time coming out in that month. Last year, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 kicked off the season with a muscular $118 million opening. Sadly, this year’s first big would-be blockbuster, The Fall Guy, looks like it will only open with about a fraction of that take, with the industry predicting a $35-40 million opening.
That opening would put it right in line with director David Leitch’s last big action flick, Bullet Train, which opened with $30 million on its way to a $103 million North American cume and a $239 million worldwide total. That was considered a more-than-ok number, considering the film only had a budget in the $90 million range.

X-Men ’97 showrunner Beau DeMayo was let go from his position in the series after prematurely completing season 2 of the show. DeMayo’s firing occurred just a week before the show’s first season premiered on Disney+. DeMayo has been actively promoting the series, which has been receiving positive reviews all over. However, he may not be reinstated like James Gunn, who was fired for controversial tweets before the filming began for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.
X-Men ’97 creator Beau DeMayo’s reinstatement is highly unlikely
Fans believe that the mysterious circumstances surrounding DeMayo’s firing meant that he was into something so bad that neither Disney nor the showrunner cared to reveal it. Before James Gunn and Peter Safran were hired to take charge of DC Studios, a Green Lantern TV series was in the works revolving around Guy Gardner and Alan Scott.
The story was set to play out across two different time periods, deepening Lantern lore. However, while it was heading to Max, we expected it to be more in line with Titans and Doom Patrol rather than a big budget superhero series akin to those seen on Disney+, for example.
There was chatter about it tying into the planned Green Lantern Corps movie, though, and an impressive cast started coming together with Finn Wittrock tapped as Guy and Jeremy Irvine set to play Alan.
Now, Wittrock - best known for American Horror Story and All My Children - has broken his silence on being ousted from the role when DC Studios set out to reboot the Dceu as the Dcu.

Since Gunn & Safran assumed control of the Dceu and rebranded it as the Dcu, a significant faction of fans who appreciated Snyder’s vision has been discontent. Gunn faces ongoing criticism and is frequently compelled to justify a movie that has yet to be completed or released.
The latest controversy revolves around allegations of potential excessive use of CGI in the forthcoming ‘Superman’ film.
The production schedule for upcoming Dcu projects is well-known by now, highlighting Gunn’s active involvement in all forthcoming shows and films. ‘Superman’ was the second project to begin production this year, closely followed by ‘Creature Commandos,’ which is nearing completion. Additionally, ‘Peacemaker’ Season 2 and ‘Waller’ are slated to be shot concurrently as TV series.

Ever since Gunn & Safran took over Dceu and rebooted it into Dcu, a large portion of the fandom that liked Snyder’s vision was mad. Gunn is constantly under attack and forced to defend the movie that isn’t even remotely close to being finished or released.
The most recent controversy and accusation is targeted toward the potential overuse of CGI in the upcoming ‘Superman’ movie.

David Leitch’s action-comedy The Fall Guy isn’t the normal kind of stunt Hollywood usually relies on to herald the start of the summer box office, but these aren’t normal times.
Outside of the pandemic era, that job belonged to superhero tentpoles, and specifically Marvel Studios fare (including all four Avengers movies). And Marvel returned to do the honors last year when Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 debuted to $118.4 million over the May 5-7 weekend. The domestic box office at $2 billion currently this year is dragging 21% behind the same January-April spread last year, and when Universal’s Fall Guy commences the hot moviegoing season this Friday with a hopeful $35M, expect summer to drag some more.
That’s because the lack of product due to the actors’ strike has made a backloaded May through Labor Day frame in what will be lucky —lucky— to hit $3 billion. That’s a $1 billion less than last summer’s $4.09 billion per Comscore and -27% off. More bad news about summer: It’s not going to catch up the year any more against 2023.
Essentially, expect less and hope for more. Remember, no one saw Barbenheimer and Sound of Freedom coming last summer and that trio collectively minted $1.15 billion. If anything, summer 2024 is more about getting moviegoers back into the habit of moviegoing than breaking any records.

James Gunn debunks conspiracy theory that he was planning Superman’s reboot during The Suicide Squad
Filming for James Gunn’s Superman seems to be going smoothly. However, there is still a stigma surrounding the film as fans of the Dceu are still maintaining that Henry Cavill’s Superman should have been given more chances to flourish. However, there is now a theory that Gunn may have forced Cavill and the Decu into the phantom zone when Nathan Fillion gave people the impression that Gunn has been working on his Dcu reboot since 2021’s The Suicide Squad.
According to Deadline, Fillion, a friend of Gunn’s, turned heads when he told an anecdote on Collider, “We were actually at the premiere party after Suicide Squad and he [Gunn] was in a huge crowd of people. …He goes, ‘Hey, did Peter [Safran] tell you what we’ve got for you next?’ I said, ‘No, he hasn’t said.’ He looked around like someone was gonna be listening. James Gunn is shutting down a fan conspiracy theory that he always planned to remove Henry Cavill from the Dceu.
Amid the shooting of the new Superman film and the second season of Peacemaker, Gunn finds time to answer fan inquiries on social media.
A fan shared a quote from Nathan Fillion about how he found out he was cast as Green Lantern in the new DC film, which will be released in 2025.
“We were actually at the premiere party after Suicide Squad and he [Gunn] was in a huge crowd of people,” Fillion said in an interview with Collider. “…He goes, ‘Hey, did Peter [Safran] tell you what we’ve got for you next?’ I said, ‘No, he hasn’t said.’ He looked around like someone was gonna be listening. With the release of Zendaya's "Challengers" behind us, it's just about time to focus on the arrival of the 2024 summer movie season. That begins, in earnest, with the release of Universal's "The Fall Guy" this Friday. After a couple of particularly bad weekends at the box office that the industry can frankly ill afford, all eyes are now on summer to help turn the tide. Like it or not, the summer now has an undue amount of pressure on it as theaters look for films capable of filling seats so they can sell enough popcorn to keep the lights on. Unfortunately, the slate we have before us doesn't seem, on paper, like it can compete with what we had last year. As a result, we're doomed to be disappointed by what unfolds in the coming months.

James Gunn is debunking a conspiracy theory that alleges he already knew about Henry Cavill’s Superman re-casting while he was promoting “The Suicide Squad.” That timeline does not make sense, Gunn suggested in a post on Threads, as he was not in charge of DC Studios in 2021 when “The Suicide Squad” released. It wasn’t until Dec. 2022 that DC Studios announced Gunn and Peter Safran as its new bosses.
Some DC fans were accusing Gunn of lying about his involvement in Cavill’s Superman exit after actor Nathan Fillion was quoted telling Collider that Gunn told him at “The Suicide Squad” premiere party in 2021 that he would be cast as Guy Gardner (aka The Green Lantern) in a new Superman movie.

Over a year ago, James Gunn and Peter Safran stepped in as Co-Producers and Co-CEOs of DC Studios, even though the Dceu wasn’t doing well. Fans were upset because the universe was getting rebooted despite a few successful movies among many failures.
Safran and Gunn revealed a lineup of new movies, including a new live-action ‘Superman’ set for release in 2025. This ‘Superman’ movie is at the heart of the conspiracy theory, sparking discussion from start to finish.
After ‘Black Adam’ hit theaters, its unexpected failure left many surprised, especially since it teased Cavill’s Superman in a post-credits scene. A sequel to ‘Man of Steel’ was in the works, with ‘Black Adam’ intended to play a significant role in the future of the Dceu.

Deadline’s Most Valuable Blockbuster tournament is back. While studios during Covid wildly embraced the theatrical day-and-date model when cinemas were closed, they soon realized there’s nothing more profitable than a theatrical release and the downstreams that come with it. If anything, theatrical is the advertisement for a movie’s longevity in subsequent home entertainment windows. Entering the conversation in 2023 were the streamers, such as Apple, who have also realized the necessity of theatrical to eventize their movies. The financial data pulled together here for Deadline’s Most Valuable Blockbuster Tournament is culled by seasoned and trusted sources.

It's no secret that the first third of 2024 has been at best uneven as far as the box office goes. Ticket sales are lagging way behind this same point in 2023, in no small part thanks to movies like "Abigail" and "The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare" underperforming on the same weekend. Thankfully, the summer movie season is on the horizon and Hollywood, as well as theater owners, will hinge their hopes on a varied slate being able to sell an outsized number of tickets. That all begins next weekend with the release of Universal's "The Fall Guy." The question is, can Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt strike gold in the summer season once again after last year's Barbenheimer phenomenon?
"The Fall Guy" will be the first blockbuster to hit theaters in May, which typically ushers in the summer for Hollywood. Currently, the big-budget action/comedy is looking at an opening weekend in the $40 million range,...

While details about the show remain scarce, it’s confirmed that one of the featured Lanterns will be Guy Gardner, portrayed by Nathan Fillion, a long-standing fan-favorite choice for the role.
In a recent interview with Collider, Fillion expressed his immense excitement for the role and his deep affection for Guy Gardner’s character.

With the Dceu undergoing a reboot, Gunn’s & Safran’s Dcu is poised to take center stage, revamping many of the stories and characters. While ‘Creature Commandos’ kicks off ‘Chapter 1: Gods & Monsters,’ the director sees ‘Superman,’ slated for release in 2025, as the true beginning of the Dcu.
Fans were disappointed by the news that Henry Cavill wouldn’t return as Superman. However, it was later announced that David Corenswet would take on the role, as Gunn envisioned a younger Superman for his cinematic universe.
Over the weekend, it was disclosed that Corenswet auditioned for a part in Gunn’s ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3,’ which was the director’s final MCU project before transitioning to his new responsibilities. Corenswet aimed to play Adam Warlock, a role that ultimately went to Will Poulter.

With the reboot of Dceu, Gunn’s & Safran’s Dcu is ready to take its place rebooting most of the stories and most of the characters. Even though ‘Creature Commandos’ is the first project to be released as a part of ‘Chapter 1: Gods & Monster’ the director considers ‘Superman’ bound to be released in 2025 the true start of the Dcu.
Fans were devastated to learn that Henry Cavill wouldn’t reprise his role as Superman, but a few months later it’s been revealed that David Corenswet will be taking over, as Gunn envisioned a younger Superman for his cinematic universe.

David Corenswet is our new Man of Steel, but before landing the leading role in James Gunn’s upcoming Superman movie, he had auditioned for the role of Adam Warlock in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, at least, that was the rumour.

The 2019 Avengers: Endgame created history by assembling many actors as heroes in one movie following 2018’s Infinity War. Of all the movies I saw teased at this year’s CinemaCon, the one that had distributors the most psyched was no doubt Deadpool and Wolverine. Many are thinking this will be Marvel’s first big hit since Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 3, and last week, when I polled readers about which CinemaCon film they were most excited about, it was the clear winner. By a landslide actually, as it earned 40% of the vote compared to the runner-up, Alien: Romulus, which earned 13.47%.
And now, with the film only a few months away from hitting theatres, Disney has finally released a brand-new trailer which gives fans their first look at the yellow-suited Wolverine in action. This is actually a different trailer than the one I saw at CinemaCon (along with ten minutes of the movie which you can read about here), and it’s pretty awesome. It gives us a...

Over 2 months ago, ‘Madame Web’ hit theaters, and it didn’t go well. The movie bombed at the box office, only making $6 million on its first day. It couldn’t even compete with big hitters like ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3.’ or the recently released ‘Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom’, falling short even of ‘Morbius’. Critics slammed it, giving it a 12% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, while audiences weren’t much kinder at 57%, earning it the “rotten” label.
People didn’t like the story, calling it all over the place. Plus, there was a bit of false advertising with the trailers showing the Spider-Women as fully powered and costumed when they weren’t in the movie. More than 2 months ago ‘Madame Web’ was released and the results have been catastrophic. The movie was an obvious box-office flop earning only $6 million on its first day. Instead of competing with the likes of ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3. ‘ or at least, the recently released ‘Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom’ the movie did not manage to outperform ‘Morbius.’ There’s also the issue of critical reception, the movie is currently rated at 12% on Rotten Tomatoes by critics and 57% by the audience, making the movie “rotten.”
The story was highly criticized for being disjointed, and there’s also the issue of somewhat false advertising as the promo photos and trailers showed all three Spider-Women already having superpowers and fully costumed, but in the movie, we don’t even see their origin stories. Fans pointed out many possible reasons for a failure of such massive scope, among them being the unfamiliarity with the source material,...

David Corenswet is one of the biggest hypes in the industry right now, and a major reason behind this is his perfect casting as the iconic Superman by James Gunn for his upcoming reboot of the DC Universe. James Gunn has been busy directing the first chapter of the new Dcu i.e. Superman (formerly Superman: Legacy). He is also simultaneously directing some episodes of Peacemaker season 2 and is handling all the grunt work that comes with being the co-chief of the new DC Studios.
It seems like part of the grunt work includes answering for the past projects of the Dcu (then the Dceu). The filmmaker was recently asked by a fan about the Green Lantern TV show for HBO Max that was in development starring American Horror Story’s Finn Wittrock. Gunn reportedly clarified the status of the project, which was announced back in 2021.

The Dceu has announced many projects in the past including films and TV shows that eventually never saw the light of day.

The actor perfectly embodies the fun but complex hero in several films across the franchise. However, he faced stiff competition from a talented batch of actors to earn a chance to join the Avengers.
In a franchise that already had several (expertly cast) actors named Chris on the team, he was introduced as the plucky and smart-mouthed Star-Lord (aka Peter Quill) in 2014′s Guardians of the Galaxy.
Since then, he’s stepped out with the team of heroes multiple times, most recently in 2023′s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.
While he is now synonymous with the part, we did some digging and rounded up 15 other actors who auditioned for the opportunity. Interestingly, there are even rumors about who were the second and third choices.
Some of his competitors wound up acting alongside Chris in the MCU.

Will Poulter’s arrival in the Hollywood circuit was a nondescript event followed by a splattering of teenage comic roles and anti-heroic sidekicks. It wasn’t until his arc in Jeremy Allen White’s series The Bear that the audience began seeing the actor as a true male lead, worthy not only of the spot at the top but looking every inch deserving of it. Quiet, focused, centered, and gravitational — something about Poulter’s role as Chef Luca drew the audience in like moths to a flame. The attraction to his character didn’t lie in his composed charm but in the unnamed, unspecified weight that he seemed to silently shoulder in his self-isolated corner of the world.

2023 may yet be remembered as the year the superhero movie died. Peyton Reed's "Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania" was released in February 2023 and was the first notable comic book-based bomb of the year. The film was notoriously re-jiggered throughout its production, with massive and expensive SFX being finalized up to the last minute. The official budget ballooned to $200 million, although separate reports have pegged the price tag as being closer to that of Disney's notorious box office misfire "John Carter" (which cost $263 million to make). "Quantumania" still grossed $464 million, but that's considered low for a Marvel movie.
Throughout 2023, more bombs dropped as superhero movies either lost money or were considered disappointments. "Shazam! Fury of the Gods," "The Flash," "Blue Beetle," "The Marvels," and "Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom" all tanked, and while many went to see "Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 3," it felt like the last kick in a closing series.

When Guardians of the Galaxy was first announced back in 2014, many were assured this was going to be MCU’s first bomb, as the IP didn’t actually have a dedicated fanbase. On top of that, apart from Zoë Saldana, who was somewhat of a star, no one in the Guardians cast was an A-lister at the time, but as the story goes, James Gunn made it work.
Fast forward to today, the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy stands as one of the best superhero trilogies, whose final entry was lauded as the MCU’s best since Infinity War. And much like the film itself, which was one of the most emotionally heavy movies the cinematic giant had to offer, the last day on set brought Gunn to tears following Chris Pratt and Zoë Saldana’s speeches.
