Netflix is doubling down on Mandarin-language content after picking up Taiwanese horror drama Green Door.
The Svod service is launching the series on March 16 in more than 190 countries and has said that the acquisition adds to the “increasing diversity and breadth of content that Netflix has to offer.”
The series launched on Taiwan’s Public Television Service in February and airs in a weekly Saturday slot. It is adapted from Taiwanese author Joseph Chen’s novel of the same title and directed by Lingo Hsieh, known for her fantasy-horror movie The Bride, which she co-created with Takashige Ichise.
Green Door tells the story of Sung-Yen Wei, played by Jam Hsiao, a troubled psychologist who returns from the U.S. to set up his own practice in Taiwan, where mysterious patients and uncanny events shed light on his murky past.

The Chinese city that is home to the world’s largest film studio has released lists of its top registered taxpayers in 2018, revealing the payments by major production companies and movie stars at a time when new tax regulations have upended the industry.
In years past, the small city of Dongyang in coastal Zhejiang province attracted big entertainment companies to Hengdian, a town under its jurisdiction, with preferential tax benefits and the massive Hengdian World Studios complex. The area now gives an indication of what lies in store for the Chinese movie industry as authorities order companies to file and pay back taxes accrued under benefit schemes considered legal at the time.
A list released Tuesday on Dongyang’s official WeChat account – but since deleted – ranked Huayi Brothers as the highest-paying entertainment company in the region and fifth highest taxpayer overall, having coughed up RMB326 million ($48.2 million) in 2018. Dongyang Daylight Entertainment,...

Director Midi Z went to unusual lengths on his love story about Burmese immigrants in Thailand, the first co-production between Taiwan, France, Germany and Myanmar.
The Road To Mandalay marks the first outing at the Venice Film Festival (Aug 31 - Sept 10) for Myanmar-born, Taiwan-based director Midi Z, whose reputation is fast on the rise. His last two films, Ice Poison (2014) and documentary City Of Jade (2016), premiered at the Berlin International Film Festival.
The Road To Mandalay is the sole Chinese-language narrative film playing at Venice this year. The main characters are Burmese-Chinese who speak the Chinese Yunnan dialect, like Midi Z himself.
According to the director, the Burmese believe there are three ways to escape poverty, “One is to become a drug smuggler, one is to work in the jade mines and the third is to smuggle yourself into another country.”
While his previous films have addressed the above issues in one way or another, The Road To Mandalay features...

L.O.R.D.: Legend of the Ravaging Dynasties
As China steps into the 3D animation and sci-fi fantasy genre, L.O.R.D.: Legends of Ravaging Dynasties aims to make a strong impression.
Based on a novel of the same title by Guo Jingming, the film spotlights a magical land called Odin which is separated into four counties – water, fire, wind, and earth. In each county lives a group of soul masters who protect the land with their powers from others seeking more power and domination.
L.O.R.D. is being touted as China’s most ambitious film project to date. Not only will it be the country’s first motion capture animation film (the entire movie is done in CGI) and first Western fantasy film, being handled mainly by Original Force with its CEO Harley Zhao personally supervising the animation. The production is also a...
