25. “Game of Thrones,” “The Winds of Winter”
This was a crucial season for “Game of Thrones” co-creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, who, in their sixth year nurturing this beast into life, had to go off-book for the first time since author George R.R. Martin had been outstripped by the TV series. Although the pair pulled off an epic ninth episode — the signature stunner in seasons past — it was the finale that came together the best this year. The opening sequence alone is worth the price of admission because it certainly brings words like “cinematic” to mind. Set to a gorgeous score by Ramin Djawadi, the scene was deftly shepherded by director Miguel Sapochnik to create an almost sadistic amount of tension as we waited for Cersei’s green revenge to be unleashed. Once the catastrophic event occurred though, that was not the end of the dragon ride for us viewers.

“The Young Pope” opens with the startling image of a mountain of newborn babies, smack dab in the middle of Venice’s Piazza San Marco. Paolo Sorrentino’s camera cranes over this infant heap as a middle-aged man emerges, clad in pontiff’s white. He then takes a midnight stroll along the plaza and into a church. Fans of the Italian director won’t be surprised; his recent films have been rich with such baroquely orchestrated shots. But they may be surprised with what happens next: Sorrentino immediately cuts to a more conventionally shot sequence of the same man, waking up and readying himself in the morning. It reminds us that what we saw was a dream, and what we’re watching is not a film.

We know this is mind-blowing information, but the characters in "Pretty Little Liars'" actually have lives beyond hanging out with their omnipresent sociopath stalker. Yep, Spencer Hastings, Aria Montgomery, Hanna Marin and Emily Fields are in their senior year of High School -- which means college is just around the corner. Of course, it's slightly difficult to get excited about school when you're being harassed on a daily basis, which brings us to this week's recap, in which the little liars juggle college, family, their favorite deranged psycho, and their fleet of significant others -- one of whom used to stalk them (cough, Ezra, cough).
Mike Is More Evil Than Ever (Might Be A Vampire), Aria Makes A New Friend Good news everyone: Rosewood is holding a blood drive, which is obviously a great opportunity for A to steal the liars' bodily fluids and plant them all over town.

The Simpsons' media gimmicks, crossovers and auteur couch gags have become a bigger story than the show itself over the last few years...
Warning: contains spoilers for this week's episodes of The Simpsons and Family Guy.
“It's not selling out, it's co-branding. Co-branding!”
So says Homer Simpson in the throes of a feverish nightmare at the beginning of Brick Like Me, the 550th episode of The Simpsons, which then unfolds mostly in a Lego version of Springfield.
It's a cute way to start an episode that uses an exercise in product placement to tell a story about parenting and creativity, which is mirrored at the end of that story when the episode acknowledges how The Lego Movie did the exact same thing a few months earlier.
Such meta-textual hat-tipping may be appreciated by more pernickety fans of The Simpsons, (it's also telling that the antagonist of Brick Like Me...

[As you probably already know, starting on Thursday, August 21, Fxx is running the Every Simpsons Ever Marathon, running through all 552 episodes of "The Simpsons," plus "The Simpsons Movie." To aid in your viewing process, Team HitFix is selecting our favorite episodes from each day, plus an episode or two that you can skip and use as a bathroom or nap break.] We're nearing the end! Day 11 of Fxx's Every Simpsons Ever Marathon takes us from "The Greatest Story Ever D'ohed" (mid-Season 21) through "Beware My Cheating Bart" (late-Season 23). Personally, I was shocked to see at least one or two episodes in this period that I haven't seen, as well as a lot of episodes I haven't seen multiple times, which was almost unheard-of for the first eight or nine days of the Marathon. But we still have preferences for you. Yup! We're gonna make it through this whole darned Marathon, for which we're unlikely to receive a prize. But we've got commitment. [Oh and the episode guest-starring Katy Perry is "The Fight Before Christmas," airing at 7:30 a.m. It was neither good nor bad enough to get mentioned here, but it makes for a good picture.] Check out our recommendations for Day 10 and chime in with your own favorites... Katie Hasty Recommends: "The Bob Next Door" (3 a.m.) Episode #463 Why it's worth watching: The best Sideshow Bob is an evil Sideshow Bob. And the best kind of Nicolas Cage movie is "Face/Off." Good news, Netflix’s very funny looking original animated show BoJack Horseman featuring the voices of Will Arnett, Aaron Paul and Alison Brie will appear on Netflix on Friday 22nd August just in time to binge watch over the bank holiday weekend.
From what I have seen so far it looks promising but then so did Hemlock Grove. Expect a full report next week. In related news, Netflix have announced a whole slate of stand-up comedy exclusive to its service after the success of the recent Aziz Ansari special. So the likes of Chelsea Handler, Jim Jefferies, Bill Cosby, Bill Burr and Chelsea Peretti will be adding stand up shows to streaming between now and December. I have only heard of a couple of these acts but there again one of the best things to do with an hour to spare is browse Netflix for its plentiful supply of stand-up...

When you’re hosting the MTV Movie Awards and promise viewers “The Biggest One You’ll Ever See,” opening with any old been-there-done-that monologue is no longer an option. Conan O’Brien was acutely aware of that challenge when he opted to attempt the Movie Awards’ boldest coup yet and score 50 celebrity cameos within the first five minutes of the show.
As you’ve now seen, O’Brien managed to pull off the feat. But he didn’t do it alone. Director Troy Miller tells EW how MTV assembled this “whirlwind of a celebrity-fest” (full list at bottom), which included appearances by Taylor Swift,...

Amy Poehler and Nick Kroll took their relationship to the next level, vacationing in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, last week and getting seriously cute in the process. The couple left chilly La temperatures behind for a sunny beachside getaway, frolicking in the sand as they looked out at the ocean views on Wednesday and again on Sunday. At one point, Amy and Nick held hands as the tide washed over their feet. It got even cuter when they shared the same stance, placing their hands on their hips and looking toward the water. The hilarious duo's sweet trip just might fall near their first anniversary. According to reports, Amy and Nick started dating last April. Ever since, the couple have revealed glimpses of their dynamic. We got a high dose of their humor this award season, when Amy kissed Bono at the Golden Globes, prompting Nick to tell the singer to "watch his back.

Mary Berry has a lot to answer for. Ever since the surprise success of The Great British Bake Off, TV bosses have been desperately trying to find the next crafty past time that will capture the public's attention - from sewing to gardening. And so enters BBC Three's Hair, which takes the idea to the salon (or, at least, a specially converted warehouse in London.)
Luckily, Hair never feels like a cynical cash-in. Instead, it's a gently entertaining show in its own right. Sure, the Great British Bake Off's influence is there - three distinct rounds, including a freestyle challenge at the end - and Denise McAdam and Alain Pichon are presumably intended to be the Berry and Hollywood of the styling world. There's even a jovial, warm but slightly mocking host in the form of Steve Jones.
But while Hair's structure is recognisable, it's enjoyable enough that we can ignore that.

On Entourage, Vincent Chase would do his dumb-whore popcorn movies (like Aqua-Man) and feel humiliated, but the truth is that he rarely looked more hapless than when he was making one of his “integrity” projects — like his Pablo Escobar biopic, or the I’m-just-Vinnie-from-the-block indie Queens Boulevard, which wound up getting showcased at Sundance. If Entourage wasn’t about Vincent Chase but was about Kristen Stewart instead, her Escobar-meets-Queens Boulevard wince-worthy integrity dud might be Camp X-Ray, in which Stewart plays a guard at Guantanamo Bay who winds up uncovering the big lie of American anti-terrorist policy by making friends...

If I was one of the 26 other women on ‘The Bachelor’ — especially one of the nine he sent home — I would have been livid watching the season premiere on Jan. 6, and Juan Pablo should be too. Sharleen does not deserve to be there!
When Juan Pablo gave the first impression rose to Sharleen, an opera singer from Ottawa, Canada, the world was shocked. However, what shocked (and irritated) me was that she couldn’t have cared less — it’s time for her to go.
Juan Pablo: Send Sharleen Home
Not only did nine women get sent home on night one of The Bachelor, Sharleen, 29, was given the first impression rose and didn’t even really care!
Like I said during the recap, I compliment her for her honesty — when he gave her the rose, she didn’t seem excited (or even aware of what was going on) and then...

Doctor Who, 2013 Christmas Special, “The Time of the Doctor”
Written by Steven Moffat
Directed by Jamie Payne
Aired Christmas at 9pm (Et) on BBC America
This week, on Doctor Who: Clara tries to cook a turkey, Tasha procures marshmallows, and the Doctor whittles
Doctor Who is a fascinating series that embraces change and creativity like no other. Each era of the show, be it defined by its Doctor or producer, has its own identity, point of view, and particular strengths and weaknesses. Unlike the fantastic 50th Anniversary special, which was far more concerned with the entire modern series, “The Time of the Doctor” crystallizes the recent Matt Smith/Steven Moffat era and highlights its characteristics incredibly well. Fans of the recent seasons will undoubtedly love “The Time of the Doctor”. Those of us less enthused with them are far more likely to be left cold.

Matt Smith has given his final performance as the Doctor. Last night, on the 2013 Doctor Who Christmas special “The Time of the Doctor”, Matt Smith’s Doctor stepped off the stage and his replacement Peter Capaldi stepped on. Did the popular Smith get a proper send-off?
Ever since his first appearance in the episode “Eleventh Hour” (2010) Matt Smith has been popular with fans and so it was inevitably a melancholy moment when the 11th (or is it the 13th?) Doctor finally regenerated and passed the torch to Peter Capaldi. An episode, however, needs more than just an emotional moment to succeed. Certainly the Christmas special “The Time of the Doctor” was jam-packed with tons of stuff, but did it have enough good moments to make it a deserving departure for Smith and a worthy ending to the show’ s 50th year? Well, yes and no.

The 2014 People’s Choice Awards nominations were announced Nov. 5, and with fan-favorites like Nina Dobrev, Ian Somerhalder, Lucy Hale & Lea Michele all racking up nominations, our heads are spinning!
The People’s Choice Awards has always been one of the stand-out fun awards show offerings, but this year’s ceremony is looking to be a bloodbath. Jared Padalecki vs. Jensen Ackles vs. Stephen Amell vs. Ian Somerhalder vs. Andrew Lincoln? Pretty Little Liars vs. The Walking Dead? (How does one even vote on that?) At least no matter who wins, it’s somebody we like, right? (Wrong. So wrong. This is huge!)
Vampires, Liars, Doctors, and Walkers: The TV Noms
With plenty of viable candidates, the TV nominations are as brutally difficult as ever this year. Some of our favorite categories include “Favorite Sci-Fi/Fantasy TV Show,” which has Beauty and the Beast, Once Upon A Time, Supernatural, The Vampire Diaries,...

Doctor Who has introduced many people to the scariest monsters and villains they’ve ever heard of. The Daleks, obviously, in the first non-Earth adventure and many since, and more recently, the Vashta Nerada or the Weeping Angels. However, not all villains live up to this expectation of terror.
Here are the top ten flops – the least impressive villains the Doctor has run across.
10. House
What Whovian doesn’t remember the intelligent planet that lured the Doctor out of the universe to a closely connected one. House, that planet, facilitated the Tardis’s venture into a failing human body and spoke in a creepy voice. He made threats. He messed with Amy’s mind a lot. However, compared with the various threats throughout the episode, House was about as scary as the certain death the characters faced if they could not return to their own universe.

The 2013 Primetime Emmy Awards was definitely a memorable one, but what were the night's best moments? Relive them below!
Michael Douglas' Acceptance Speech:
Michael Douglas definitely livened up the Emmys with a hilarious and sweet acceptance speech for his award for best Lead Actor in a Miniseries or Movie for Behind the Candelabra. Aside from the amusing X-rated jokes directed at his co-star Matt Damon -- who happily giggled in the audience -- he also made sure to thank his "wife" Catherine (Zeta-Jones and Douglas announced their separation in August) and his son Cameron, who's currently in jail.
Best Acceptance Speech Ever?
Merritt Wever charmed audiences with perhaps the shortest speech ever at the Emmys. Accepting an award for best Supporting Actress for her work on Nurse Jackie, Wever proved that sometimes less is really more.
James Gandolfini's In Memoriam Tribute:
Edie Falco moved viewers with a heartfelt In Memoriam Tribute to her long-time Sopranos...

Ever since Matt Smith suddenly announced his departure from Doctor Who, fans have been chomping at the bit to find out who will be his replacement. We spoke to former Doctor Who star Arthur Darvill to find out whom he thinks could wield the Sonic Screwdriver next and also to address some of those pesky 50th Anniversary rumors about Amy and Rory…
When asked point blank about whether or not we’ll get any sort of cameo from the Ponds in the 50th Anniversary Special, Darvill laughed, “Well, I’m here!” So, there it is. Amy and Rory probably aren’t coming back and Darvill is happily (and ironically) settled for the time being in New York City, which renders him incapable of joining in the fun. He added, “I think it is going to be insane, but brilliant! I’m really looking forward to it to see what happens…...

Ever since Gillian Flynn’s novel Gone Girl rocketed up the bestseller list and became an instant Hollywood go-picture, some of the biggest actresses have reportedly circled the juicy role of Amy Dunne, the beautiful and enigmatic New Yorker who goes missing after reluctantly following her husband back to his hometown in Missouri. There was Reese Witherspoon, who’s producing the movie adaptation, and Charlize Theron, and Natalie Portman, to name just a few Oscar winners. But as Gone Girl’s director David Fincher demonstrated with Rooney Mara in Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, he’s not one to always...

In an interview with TotalFilm, Joss Whedon revealed a previously unknown piece of Firefly trivia. In his own words:
"I had planned to do an episode of Firefly with Amy [Acker] and Alexis [Denisof] and James Marsters as part of a travelling Shakespeare troupe. Because it's sort of a staple of the John Ford westerns is that there's always that over-the-top theatre guy, and I thought it would be terrific having them trying to put on a play in the cargo bay. But, I don't know if you know this, but we were cancelled; so I didn't get to do it."
Fred and Wesley and Spike performing Shakespeare on Serenity? Best. Hypothetical. Episode. Ever.
Firefly meets Angel meets Shakespeare? A world of yes.
For Whedonites, this would have been insanely awesome, because not only did Firefly manage to establish itself as one of the best shows ever (if not even the very...

And now, a fun and decidedly underrated fact: Amy Adams has been nominated for four Oscars, and she's still only 38 years old. Maybe the most respected and sought-after actress of her generation, Adams routinely shows up in movies beloved by critics and audiences alike with significant and scene-stealing roles. She displays exceptional versatility, and her talent demands that she not be pigeon-holed into any specific acting stereotype, despite her real-life charming and easygoing public persona.
Now, as her latest film "Man of Steel" hits theaters, we here at NextMovie wanted to ask ourselves an important question of Adams, one that has yet to be publicly addressed in a satisfactory manner: Is Amy Adams hot, or not?
I've split myself into two equally terrifying and thankfully fictional personalities, a la Charlie Kaufman in "Adaptation," to debate each other and ultimately make the final, irreversible decision on this matter (a decision that means nothing to anyone,...

We’re fast approaching the height of wedding season, both in real life and on television, as Game of Thrones delivers rather memorable weddings two episodes in a row. So, to commemorate such significant events, let us all raise our glasses and toast ten especially funny, sweet, memorable or plain bloody weddings from the best of geek television.
Weddings are one of television’s more popular special episodes and there were a lot to choose from, so to cut it down a bit, any wedding that takes places in a dream, a vision or a future that may or may not come to pass has been excluded – so no Buffy and Angel,...

Trying to grade as season that spanned nine months - with two distinctive 13-episode arcs featuring completely different characters - turned out to be a little bit easier than I thought.
Still, Doctor Who Season 7 maintained the brilliance of previous seasons and set us up for the 50th Anniversary Episode coming in November, which is like a little candy nugget we wouldn't get otherwise. How lucky are we!
The loss of Amy and Rory and their exquisitely memorable exit after already, unknowingly, having met The Doctor's next companion paved the way for a rather seamless transition despite the character turnover involved in such a move. There were so many Best Episodes in Season 7 that there was no other grade it could receive other than an A...

Ever wanted an interview where a director talked about the reaction to their film a month after release? Here's Ben Gregor on All Stars...
It's our intention at Den Of Geek to support, wherever we can, British films. That's why we covered the release of Ben Gregor's All Stars this time last month, a family-centric dance movie that, truthfully, we didn't rate particularly highly. Our review is here.
And yet, in spite of getting some critical attacks, the film has found space to become a solid hit. Furthermore, its director, a chatty and lovely man by the name of Ben Gregor, actually wrote back to one critic- Christopher Tookey of the Daily Mail - taking issue with some of the attacks in that paper's review.
One of the interviews I've personally most enjoyed doing was chatting to Peter Ramsey, the director of DreamWorks' Rise Of The Guardians,...

Today (Tuesday, May 21) is a mighty day for Arizona natives who love soggy pizza and verbal abuse: Today is the day that Amy's Baking Co. indulges us in its grand reopening.
Fans of "Kitchen Nightmares" already know this restaurant well, featured like it was in the show's season finale. Within minutes of co-owners Amy and Samy Bouzaglo first appearing on screen, it became obvious that they're a pair of bullies and thieves who deserve any negative publicity they may get. (They pocket waiters' tips. They verbally abuse customers and employees. They can't cook pizza, and they won't admit it. The Amy's Baking Co. episode also will go down in history as the only time that "Kitchen Nightmares" host Gordon Ramsay essentially fled his own show.)
Of course, being thieves and bullies, the Bouzaglos have been on the attack ever since the Fox show aired, promising to tell "our...

If you didn’t catch the season finale of Kitchen Nightmares last week, and you’re in it for the people who act crazy, you missed the show of shows. Except, it’s still on, so there’s time to get in the game.
You may know that I’m a pretty serious Gordon Ramsay fan, and specifically quite a fan of Kn, but we don’t really do episodic recaps here, so I’m not always in the loop, week by week, for every show. On the other hand, I do pay attention to most of the possibilities, and a little warning light did go off last week, I just didn’t pay enough attention to it. What with upfronts and new TV schedules coming, I didn’t listen to that little voice that wondered what was going on with the show.
You see, these are the press photos...

It was night one of the knockout rounds on ‘The Voice,’ slimming down Shakira and Adam’s teams by half. However, this week, it seems like all the judges were more focused on going against Blake!
Once again, The Voice stage was full of talent and competition, pinning the best against the best. However, it was much more difficult on the judges, of course, who were butting heads. Shakira, Usher and even his bromance buddy Adam Levine all really went head-to-head with Blake Shelton!
Team Adam Impresses Blake Shelton
“I think I like you as much as I can’t stand Adam Levine,” Blake told Team Adam’s country singer Amber Carrington after she opened the show with an amazing version of Avril Lavigne‘s ”I’m With You.”
Amber responded by telling Blake how much she loved him, which riled up Adam, causing him to remind her whose team she was on!

Ever since her sad, but sadly predictable, death in 2011, the notion of an Amy Winehouse biopic was all but certain and now official word has dropped that Senna director Asif Kapadia has been selected to helm a doc about the life of the late big-voice soul singer who died at 27.
Kapadia, along with producer James Gay-Rees, also have the added bonus of getting the blessing of the Winehouse clan, who said in a statement that though they'd been approached by a slew of filmmakers about taking on the project, they settled on the duo because they promised to "look at Amy's story sensitively, honestly and without sensationalizing her."
And since the movie will be documentary, which will include unseen archival footage according to Focus Features International, the tendency to go melodramatic will at least be curbed by not having an actress portray the main subject a la Liz & Dick debacle.

The companion is a staple to the Doctor Who series. Though some Doctor Who outings have made do without them or have given us temporary stand-ins, the (surprisingly always) young, attractive girl from London who flies away with the madman in a box, is as crucial to Doctor Who as the monsters are.
The companions have ranged from the great (such as the Ponds) to the… well… Martha. But have they final done it? Have they struck gold with Clara?
Each companion has had some sort of story arc to them. Rose was the Bad Wolf, Martha was the woman who walked the earth (it doesn’t bode that well that I had to look that up), Donna was the most important woman in all of creation and Amy was the girl who waited. Yet, all of these stories usually take a while to develop, or even begin. Bad Wolf came and went,...
