As we creep towards summer, Netflix has a hot new list of fresh content, including the final season of “Never Have I Ever,” the sophomore season of ‘Human Resources” and the highly anticipated sixth season of “Black Mirror.”
Kicking off the start of the month on mega streamer are lots of family-friendly goodies like both “Nanny McPhee” and “Nanny McPhee Returns,” “Kicking and Screaming,” “Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius” and the “Angry Birds Movie.” But the adults won’t be left out of the conversation, as more mature flicks and series like “Jarhead,” “Funny People” and “We’re the Millers” are also hitting the platform this month.
And it wouldn’t be Netflix without its originals. “Take Care of Maya,” “Extraction 2” and the Sarah Snook-led “Run Rabit Run” will land on the site in June. And even if this isn’t enough to get you watching, Netflix will be streaming its Tudum festival on Saturday,...

Two holidays, four new releases, and a few Oscar boosts made for a strong weekend. Though it fell behind last month’s stellar three days around Martin Luther King Day (which featured “Bad Boys for Life”), we saw an improvement of 25%, or $30 million, over the same dates last year. It’s another positive sign in a year that has seen all but one weekend improve on 2019: So far, total grosses are running about 15% ahead ($1.45 million) of last year’s anemic start.
Paramount’s “Sonic the Hedgehog” led the pack, and Valentine’s Day bolstered “The Photograph” (Universal) and “Downhill” (Searchlight). However, the Will Packer-produced romance fared far better than the Julia Louis-Dreyfuss and Will Farrell’s English-language remake of “Force Majeure.” And both will fall short of Blumhouse’s critically reviled, PG-13 horror take on the 1970s TV series “Fantasy Island” (Sony).

This weekend provides theaters with a gift they receive about once every six years: a four-day period with two separate holidays. Friday is Valentine’s Day; Monday is Presidents Day. Studios have responded with four new releases, for four distinct audiences, while holdover business will add to a healthy mix. School and business holidays on Monday should add about 17% to what the three day weekend provides.
“Sonic the Hedgehog” (Paramount) will be the easy #1 among these, possibly double the next-highest gross. But where it and the other debuts rank – “Fantasy Island” (Sony), “The Photograph” (Universal), and “Downhill”(Searchlight) — and particularly whether they can beat three still-viable holdovers, is up in the air. Also unclear: If this weekend can match last year’s total of $122 million.
Looming over the weekend is how the just-renamed “Harley Quinn: Birds of Prey” (Warner Bros.) will hold. Caution is the watchword after figuring $50 million for...

Remakes have been a part of the studio machine since at least as far back as 1904 when the groundbreaking “The Great Train Robbery” was reshot and resold. In the century-plus that followed, remakes have gotten a bad name for themselves and, to some, are indicative of the creative vacancy of the mainstream entertainment industry. But look closer and you’ll find that many filmmakers are doing wonderful things by taking old stories and making them new again, either by adding visual flair or injecting nuance where, perhaps, there was little to be found before. Some of the best movies of the last decade were remakes. And these, we dare say, were the 10 best.

From Battery-Powered Sets to Finessing Craft Service, How Hollywood Is Reducing Its Carbon Footprint
For a town whose cultural climate can be rife with toxicity, exclusion and abuse, you’d be surprised by how organized and cooperative Hollywood has become in combating climate change.
At least that’s what Variety found when surveying the carbon footprint of modern show business — specifically in terms of producing film and television content at home on Los Angeles studio lots and on locations around the world.
While creators and executives have come under fire in recent months for failing to make movies that address the global climate crisis, they are taking steps to make their productions more eco-friendly. It’s a moment that’s seen bitter competitors join hands to establish a set of best practices that help reduce emissions and encourage sustainability.

Hollywood has a long history of metamorphizing movies that featured white casts into movies with predominantly black casts. Most famously, The Wizard of Oz (1939) was remade as The Wiz (1978), but other color-coordinated remakes include Annie (2014), About Last Night (2014), Steel Magnolias (2012) and Death at a Funeral (2010). Up until now, all television viewers have known about Netflix’s upcoming comedy series “Russian Doll” is that it stars Natasha Lyonne as a woman who attends a “seemingly inescapable party one night in New York City.” The streaming giant’s vague plot description didn’t give away the show’s central conceit, but the official trailer below certainly does. More or less, this Netflix original series is going to be Lyonne’s raunchy riff on the “Groundhog Day” formula.
“Russian Doll” stars Lyonne as a woman named Nadia, who keeps dying one night only to wake up and find herself back in the same bathroom before a party. The trailer below transitions from broad comedy to more existential comedy, as Nadia’s attempts to get people to believe her begin to expose a more painful struggle of mental instability. Demi Moore was honored with Peggy Albrecht Friendly House’s Woman of the Year Award on Saturday night, and used the occasion to recall turning her life around early in her career. “I was spiraling down a path of real self-destruction and no matter what success I had I just never felt good enough,” she said to those in attendance at the women’s recovery center’s ceremony at the Beverly Hilton Hotel.
“I had absolutely no value for myself and this self-destructive path, it really quickly brought me to a real crisis point,” she added, per Variety. “It wasn’t clear at the time, maybe it was divine intervention, but two people who I barely knew stepped up and took a stand for me and presented me with an opportunity, which I guess was more like an ultimatum — unless I was dead, I better show up.”

With the $28 million opening of Kevin Hart-Tiffany Haddish comedy “Night School” last weekend, producer Will Packer scored his tenth first-place box office opening. He’s a success story that stands out at a time when issues surrounding inclusivity and diversity are a cause célèbre, as the Hollywood machine faces steadfast criticism for its shortcomings on those fronts. Collectively, Packer’s films have earned a box office lifetime gross of over $1.2 billion, topping even the prolific Tyler Perry — a fellow African American director-producer with a similar ethos with respect to producing and distributing content. So what’s Packer’s secret?
It’s a formula that the seasoned producer honed very early in his career, with indie efforts like the 2000 erotic thriller “Trois”: relatively low- to moderately-budgeted films, targeting specific audiences that have been historically ignored by the studio system. “Trois” was made on a $250,000 budget, and grossed over...

Universal topped the weekend box office for the second weekend in a row, this time with the comedy Night School starring Kevin Hart and Tiffany Haddish. At the same time Warner Bros.'s animated feature Smallfoot finished in the runner-up position while the studio's horror hit The Nun became the highest grossing international and worldwide release in the Conjuring universe. All-in-all the weekend top twelve fell a bit shy of Mojo's pre-weekend expectations but this weekend did provide more than enough in terms of box office receipts to help deliver the second largest September on record behind last year's record breaking grosses. Universal's PG-13 comedy Night School from producer Will Packer topped the weekend chart with an estimated $28 million. While short of BoxOfficeMojo's pre-weekend forecast, this is a solid start for the $29 million production, which received an "A-" CinemaScore from opening day audiences, a grade contrary to the mixed reviews from critics.

This year, a record 928 people were invited to join the motion picture academy and will be eligible to vote for the 2019 Oscars. Compare this intake to the totals of the previous four years: 774 in 2017; 683 in 2016; 322 in 2015; and 271 in 2014.
While Academy Awards nominees are automatically eligible for consideration, the rest of the candidates must go through a fairly cumbersome process. A candidate must meet certain branch specific requirements before even being eligible.
For example, actors must “have a minimum of three theatrical feature film credits, in all of which the roles played were scripted roles, one of which was released in the past five years, and all of which are of a caliber that reflect the high standards of the Academy.” For writers, directors and producers they need have just two of these credits.
The executive committee of the branch must endorse the application before forwarding it to the Board of Governors for final approval.

In an astonishing move to swell the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences membership ranks, a record 928 artists and executives from 59 countries have been invited to join this year. The branches have increasingly actively sought eligible people to invite to join the Academy, but the Board of Governors makes the final call; this year, they did not invite Kobe Bryant to join although he won an Oscar for animated short “Dear Basketball.”
Clearly, people of color (38 percent) and women (49 percent) are among the many invites, as the Academy continues to address its long-term white-male dominance. As always, actors make up the largest branch of the Academy, but many new members also come from overseas.
In 2017, the Academy invited 744 new members.
Seventeen Oscar winners are among the new members and 92 Oscar nominees. Nine of the 17 branches invited more women than men. The percentage of women in the Academy has risen...

“The challenge when you’re designing anything that’s futuristic is trying to keep it grounded and keep it believable,” says “Altered Carbon” costume designer Ann Foley. Otherwise you risk “taking the audience out of the story.” This Netflix series imagines a future where consciousness can be digitized and stored. When a prisoner (Joel Kinnaman) returns to life in a new body he must solve a mind-bending murder in order to win his freedom. “Our visual effects and production design were so beautifully elaborate,” Foley adds, so “the most important thing was to make sure my costumes integrated perfectly and beautifully into this amazing world.” Watch our exclusive video interview with Foley above.

We'll have more on the overall international performance with tomorrow morning's report. In second is Universal's release of Girls Trip, which is scorching the weekend, delivering an estimated $11.68 million on Friday, heading toward a $29+ million opening. The kids don't like it when mom and dad fight, and my God they weren't the only ones fighting.

“The Simpsons”
If you’re on the air for nearly three decades and feature as many pop culture references as “The Simpsons,” the Cubs are bound to come up a few times. And they have, both as a four-word joke and a more elaborate unveiling of the only way the Cubs could actually win. Yet the most pertinent...

It’s never been easy to put filmmaker Edward Zwick into a box. The multi-hyphenate has long eschewed sticking to just one genre and even one medium. He helped launch seminal television series like “Thirtysomething” (which he co-created alongside long-time partner Marshall Herskovitz) and “My So-Called Life” (which the pair executive produced) to the small screen, while also directing historical epics like “Glory” and “Defiance,” modern classics like “Courage Under Fire” and “Blood Diamond” and even the odd romantic comedy — or two: Zwick helmed “Love & Other Drugs” and the original “About Last Night…” feature.
Zwick has done it all, but with his latest film, “Jack Reacher: Never Go Back,” he’s managed to do something new: Try his hand at a bone-breaking action sequel, featuring America’s ass-kicking sweetheart in the title role. With the September 23, 2017 debut of Dirty 30 and the September 26 premiere of Laid in America, Hollywood has presented us with two studio-backed low-budget films featuring many prominent social-media influencers. Traditional Hollywood has finally joined, to borrow influencer Michelle Glavan’s phrase, “the YouTube movie circuit.”
That means traditional studios are finally trying a newish model for making and marketing films that are the polar opposite of their usual blockbuster behemoths. The model emerged about three years ago, when indie producers and multichannel networks like AwesomenessTV tapped squadrons of influencers for roles in films such as Expelled and Camp Takota. This model has resulted in small films that typically are profitable, relatively low risk, and can connect with young audiences who otherwise ignore traditional studios.
Previously, the big media companies focused more on buying up multichannel networks (e.g. Maker Studios, Machinima, Collective Digital Studios) and tapping influencers to promote their products.
