Fun trivia: one of the working titles for Wes Craven's 1996 slasher satire "Scream" was "Scary Movie." Filmmaker Keenan Ivory Wayans got wind of this trivia, and decided in 2000 to make a film called "Scary Movie" intended to satirize the popularity of "Scream." The late 1990s were a curious time in popular culture, as there weren't too many dominant horror trends. Popular music was beginning to comment on its own self-awareness (see: "Flagpole Sitta") and irony became ironic. Self-reflection went from a healthy Socratic exercise into a loop of eternal recurrence. By 2000, we became so busy commenting on our own commentaries, that it was hard to see where we started. This is where "Scary Movie" dropped in.
Make no mistake, "Scary Movie" is unfunny, as are its many sequels. They're cheap, homophobic, and vulgar. Wayans took his model from spoof filmmakers like Zucker/Abrahams/Zucker, but aimed to make something...

"I've never given much thought to how I would die, but dying in the place of someone I love seems like a good way to go." Now that's how you start a franchise!
Since 2008, the "Twilight" films have been a cultural mainstay for better and for worse. A film so beloved that cosmetics companies are selling out of "Twilight"-inspired collections in under 10 minutes 15 years later, and so hated that it inspired the $20 million studio-produced parody film "Vampires Suck." Few multi-billion dollar franchises are quite this polarizing, and even fewer have had as powerful of a cultural reclamation years later. Love them or hate them, the "Twilight" films are one of the most important products of the late 2000s and 2010s, and no amount of whining about vampires sparkling or commenting "still a better love story than 'Twilight'" is going to change that.

Ahead of the possible WGA strike, Lionsgate Television has announced their latest legacy revival project is coming in the form of a series adaptation of Stephenie Meyer's vampire love story, "Twilight." The late 2000s and early 2010s have apparently never been hotter, as "Twilight" joins the reboot ranks of the previously announced "Harry Potter" series adaptation, the new "The Lord of the Rings" films, and the soon-to-be-released "The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes" prequel film. It admittedly feels a little unfair to lump in "The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes" with the other reboots, as "The Hunger Games" series has seen a resurgence in popularity and the film is adapting a new book, rather than rehashing what already exists.
As of publication, the "Twilight" series is without a writer or streaming home, but it'd be shocking if IP-hungry suits weren't currently trying to sink their fangs into the property.

Other new film arrivals include hits from earlier this summer, “The Lost City” starring Sandra Bullock, Daniel Radcliffe, Channing Tatum and Brad Pitt, as well as “Sonic the Hedgehog 2.” Academy Award-nominated film “Licorice Pizza” also arrives on Prime Video this month.

We would like to be different—like the vampire we like. — Laurence A. Rickels, The Vampire Lectures1 Stephenie Meyer had never read about or seen a vampire—on-screen or in her heart—before.2 The first she encountered was in a dream, where one stood on a field with a girl by his side. In a gushing post on her website, the author divulges her vision: “[They] were discussing the difficulties inherent in the facts that A) they were falling in love with each other while B) the vampire was particularly attracted to the scent of her blood, and was having a difficult time restraining himself from killing her immediately.”3 The lovers’ discourse will later become chapter 13 of Twilight, a formative but forbidden romance novel adored among teens and a sizable number of adults, published in October of 2005. At the height of its popularity, my school library labeled the books with scarlet warning stickers of shame,...

Star Worlds Episode Xxxive=MC2: The Force Awakens The Last Jedi Who Went Rogue goes into production this year.
Whenever the Golden Raspberry Awards roll around, it’s a continual disappointment that they tend to focus on big movies, sometimes ambitious ones, that failed for one reason or another. What they don’t tend to go for are genuinely awful films, such as the assortment of terrible spoofs from Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer. These include, but are not limited to, Epic Movie, Meet The Spartans and Vampires Suck.
Now, cheerily, Friedberg and Seltzer are turning their attention to Star Wars, with a spoof entitled Star Worlds Episode Xxxive=MC2: The Force Awakens The Last Jedi Who Went Rogue.

Vampires have long-fascinated mainstream culture; as a result, they have inspired thousands of motion pictures across almost a century’s worth of cinema – to seriously mixed results.
The genre goes all the way back to the earliest days of cinema, while a revival in the late ’50 – courtesy of Britain’s own Hammer Horror studio – eventually drove the sub-genre towards oversaturation in the late ’80s. Nevertheless, due to tongue-in-cheek reinventions like Vampire’s Kiss and Fright Night, this lull was relatively short-lived.
Generally, vampire films remain somewhat divisive, mainly because they tend to differ so much in quality and often lapse into accidental parody. For every classic of the genre, there’s usually a dozen terrible releases: Vampires Suck, Dracula 2000 and Bloodrayne are all notably lacklustre efforts. In more recent years, the Twilight series has brought negative connotations to the vampire, but – as always – the genre survived the mauling.

Marlon Wayans’s El James cinema parody just isn’t funny
As if Scary Movie, Epic Movie, Vampires Suck et al weren’t bad enough, here comes another depressing “cinema parody” that isn’t half as amusing as the film(s) it wants us to laugh at. “How do we make this funny?” muses co-writer/star Marlon Wayans in the production notes. “The key was to im agine ‘What if Christian Grey were black?’” Cue jokes about wallet and car theft, fried chicken and Bill Cosby, alongside glasshouse/brick complaints about El James being a rubbish writer. When it all runs out of steam, the cock-and-ball routines downshift into riffs from Whiplash and Magic Mike, but sadly, these aren’t funny either.

It often makes you wonder about the tastes of modern audiences when horror comedies – a combination of the two most downright enjoyable genres in cinema – usually manage to both be a turn-off critics, and fail at the box office. If ever a genre had the potential for send-up, it’s the one that spawned the immortal classics Unfriended, Ouija and Annabelle.
Then again, it’s entirely possible that a modern crowd just doesn’t want to see horror being parodied. A decent horror comedy (or, failing that, Scary Movie 5) will make fun of all the genre conventions and spoof their weaknesses, and the people who’re itching to see another Friday the 13th eboot don’t want that.
Or maybe they watched A Haunted House and Vampires Suck and wrote off the idea that horror can be funny. It can, but you won’t find many laughs in those opportunistic would-be comedies,...

The title says it all.
When a movie is called Dude Bro Party Massacre III and there have not been two previous Dude Bro Party movies, you know one of two things: either you need to see this movie as soon as possible or it is not for you. It is the first movie from 5 Second Films (5Sf), a comedy site and collective of actors and filmmakers who have been posting short videos online since the mid-2000s but are finally branching out into features. It is gory and ridiculous and absolutely recommended for fans of '80s horror or absurdist comedy. It's even better if you're a fan of both.
The conceit of the film is that it's the second sequel to an '80s slasher called Dude Bro Party and that the only remaining copy left in the world exists because a kid taped it off of TV in the '80s,...

Which has, for reason only known to the UK distributor and undoubtedly supermarket buying managers everywhere, been re-titled Grimm Tales for its UK release on May 4th.
Starring Michael Welch, from the Twilight saga and the fantastic TV show Joan of Arcadia, as Hansel and Molly C. Quinn,...

Kiwi spoofers put some bite back into a flagging sub-genre. And the problem with the submarine thriller form…
As sub-genres go, the vampire movie parody has had a remarkably low strike rate, perhaps because the films in the firing line have an inbuilt sense of camp that either resists irony or absorbs it. But over the mirthless corpses of Lesbian Vampire Killers, Dracula: Dead and Loving It and Vampires Suck, a genuinely funny attempt has risen: What We Do in the Shadows (Metrodome, 15), a cheap, chipper exercise in bloodsucker banter from New Zealand that also finds improbable life in the creatively dormant mockumentary format.
Such are the sharply silly comic skills of Flight of the Conchords goofball Jemaine Clement, who co-wrote and directed the film with Taika Waititi; the pair also play half of the film’s mismatched quartet of vampires, sharing digs in defiantly un-moody suburban Wellington. One’s geeky,...

Could it be possible that February – a month normally associated with cinematic duds and forgettables – brings one of 2015’s funniest movies in the form of a vampire mockumentary? When it’s created by one-half of the duo behind The Flight Of The Conchords (Jemaine Clement) and Taika Waititi, you damn well better believe it.
Coming together like the uproarious lovechild of Christopher Guest and Dario Argento, What We Do In The Shadows is another giant leap forward for a stunted vampire genre that now depends on out-of-the-box efforts to make people both love and fear bloodsucking demons once again. Airing more on the side of comedy, Clement and Waititi poke fun at numerous vampire generations in the same movie, from Nosferatu to Twilight, and they do so through a Big Brother-esque documentary that introduces audiences to a group of vampires just trying to survive in today’s crazy, monster-hating world.

Tagline: "A new killer, born of war, riding the wind." A hunting trip goes wrong in Russell Friedenberg's Wind Walkers. This film, which was shot in the Florida Everglades, brings an ancient Native American legend to the screen, in 2015. From director Russell Fridenberg and starring Glen Powell (April Apocalypse) and Zane Holtz (Vampires Suck), Wind Walkers are spirits, who can possess the living. These spirits come to life in the first trailer for the film, found here. For more on the story, this hunting party is under attack. Their lodge is robbed and destroyed. Then, one in their group disappears into the wilderness. More and more from the group disappear, until they return hungry for flesh. Now, the survivors must escape, or face an eternity of rot in the swamps. The first trailer for Wind Walkers is a compelling one. Full of action sequences and exterior shots, the trailer...

If you missed the Gecko brothers face off against the neck-chomping creatures of the night on El Rey Network earlier this year, don’t despair: you can pop season one of the series into your Blu-ray or DVD player. For those that have already seen it, we have a breakdown of the special features that may be worth your while:
“From executive producer Robert Rodriguez comes the first season of the original El Rey Network series, From Dusk Till Dawn, swooping onto Blu-ray and DVD, featuring all 10 Season One episodes, including episodes directed by Rodriguez and Eduardo Sánchez(The Blair Witch Project). This supernatural series, based on Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino’s 1996 cult classic film of the same name (starring George Clooney, Harvey Keitel, Salma Hayek and Tarantino), centers on bank robbers Seth and Richie Gecko, who are wanted by the authorities after a heist leaves several dead. Filmmakers Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer, the duo behind critically reviled spoofs like "Date Movie," "Epic Movie," "The Starving Games," "Meet The Spartans" and "Vampires Suck," have setup their next project.
The pair will co-write and direct "Who The F#@k Took My Daughter," this spoof aiming mostly at the Liam Neeson-led "Taken" film series.
In the spoof, Ryan Miller is a tough, no nonsense, black leather jacket-wearing type whose daughter is kidnapped. He sets out to hunt down the abductors and rescue her. Peter Safran will produce.
The pair's previous films have grossed a total of $350 million in worldwide box office thus far, though their two most recent films - "The Starving Games" and "Best Night Ever" - were bombs which only made a few million each.

When it comes to movie monsters, there is no comparison. Dinner with a zombie would inevitably get messy. Frankenstein's Monster is a lousy conversationalist. Werewolves are boring three weeks out of every four.
But vampires? Now you're talking. Vampires are suave, stylish and sexy. Even when they turn on you, you get the benefit of eternal youth and an excuse to stay up all night, every night.
With Tilda Swinton and Tom Hiddleston now playing hipster bloodsuckers in Jim Jarmusch's Only Lovers Left Alive, we look back at previous screen vampires to discover what makes them so cool.

The simplest way to become a vampire is to don fake teeth and fangs very much, I vant to suck your blood. Yet Max Schreck went much further, perfecting a chillingly inhuman look as Nosferatu with a bald head, rat's ears and long nails.

It’s almost hard to remember a time when the vampire genre was dead.
It was before Twilight, of course. Before the film version of Stephenie Meyer’s novel was released in 2008 to the sound of millions of squees, vampire movies were considered somewhat risky investments and TV networks rarely ordered shows starring the undead. Since the conclusion of The WB’s Angel in 2004, there was FX’s Blade: The Series (flop) and CBS’ Moonlight (flop). On the big screen, the genre’s popularity varied from films like Van Helsing and I Am Legend (hits) to Queen of the Damned...

Though it’s an unwatchable disaster in all other respects, “Best Night Ever” boasts two accomplishments, which contemporaneously speaking, make it something of a cinematic milestone: it by far makes worse use of “found footage” than possibly any movie ever, and it answers yes to the question of whether or not filmmakers can score a movie exclusively with even-more-horrible ripoffs of Lmfao’s already-horrible “Party Rock Anthem.” A raunchy but admittedly earnest imitation of “Bridesmaids” and “Bachelorette,” the project marks the first “original” project from Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer, the consistently untalented purveyors of spoof movies like “Date Movie,...

Anything that happens in Vegas. Stays in Vegas.
Hilarious comedy “Best Night Ever” is another movie about a group of friends partying in Las Vegas and obviously things do go wrong.
This is the first original comedy from directors Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer, the team that directed spoofs like “Vampires Suck,” “Disaster Movie, and “Meet the Spartans.” However, this movie does sort of mock “The Hangover,” “Project X,” “Spring Breakers,” and “Bridesmaids.”

With staggering sex appeal and serious star power that has lasted generations, Mick Jagger is more than a man; he's an icon. Which makes casting someone to play his younger self in a movie a pretty daunting endeavor. (Like casting Freddie Mercury almost!) But at long last the search of Get On Up filmmakers has ended, as THR announces Nick Eversman has signed on to play the Rolling Stones front man in the James Brown biopic. Eversman has an impressive list of film and TV credits considering he only made his screen debut in 2009 in a little-known crime-drama called Innocent. Since then, he has appeared in televisions shows like The Missing, CSI: Miami and House, as well as landed roles in movies like Hellraiser: Revelations, Vampires Suck, and the horror-thriller The Depraved. However, he might be best recognized as a series regular on the new CW sci-fi show The Tomorrow...

Warning: The following is a red band trailer that contains nudity and other adult content. It is Nsfw. Bachelor parties have long been a source of inspiration for comedy but with The Hangover, hard R pre-wedding cavorting became big business. Bridemaids and Bacherlorette gave this concept a female touch, while Last Vegas brought artificial hips and erectile dysfunction drugs and into the mix. But now, the guys who brought you ridiculous spoofs like Meet the Spartans, Vampires Suck and The Starving Games have taken their turn at bonkers bachelorette parties with Best Night Ever. Coming from horror masters Magnet and Blumhouse Productions, I suspected this trailer would be for a girls night gone wrong in the way of serial killers or enraging a ghost bride or something. But nope! This feature written and directed by spoofmakers Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer is a flat-out comedy, where there is plenty of...

If you wondered who North America's answer to Uwe Boll was, it has to be the duo of Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer. The twosome actually broke into the industry pretty respectably as the scribes behind the first "Scary Movie," but have since circled the drain as writer/directors of increasingly half-baked, low-budget efforts like "Meet The Spartans," "Disaster Movie," "Vampires Suck" and more recently, "The Starving Games." Yet, somehow they keep convincing people to give them money to make movies and/or know how to use tax rebates because they already have another turd on the way. The red band trailer for "Best Night Ever" has dropped and it's about as lazy and dumb as you might expect. A ripoff of "The Hangover," "Bridesmaids" and "Spring Breakers," this found footage thing follows four young women having a wild and wacky bachelorette party. Yawn. It's the kind of movie pretty...

Your Top Three is a series here at Movies.com where we choose a topic and you give us your top three picks. Apparently The Starving Games opened last Friday, but this latest spoof movie from Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer (Epic Movie; Vampires Suck) was released in such a limited amount of theaters that the distributor doesn't even seem interested in reporting box office figures. Reviews of the movie, all of them negative, also didn't start showing up until days later. But it's also available from iTunes and On Demand if you're into those guys' humor. I'm not judging. I haven't seen any of their work, except for Scary Movie, which they cowrote. Their brand of parody isn't everyone's cup of tea, of course. So what is? The difficulty...

It’s the gesture that matters this late in the game, not the art: “The Starving Games” is the sixth directorial effort from Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer, and they are nothing if not consistent. Their interests in parody have always ranged from whatever’s generally zeitgeist-y at the time, though they’ve begun specifying their targets with “Vampires Suck” and their latest, both of which deflate the trends of recent young adult novel adaptations. It was pointless when the duo was satirizing everything under the sun, but at least in “The Twilight Saga” and “The Hunger Games,” they’ve selected targets that aren’t postmodern or self-critical in any imaginable way. When Stanley Tucci and Toby Jones get in those ridiculous “Hunger Games” wigs, is it any more respectable than working actors making some chump change in a major 2013 release that bothers to parody the Na’vi in “Avatar...

Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer. Don't know them? Count yourself lucky. They're the ones who gave us Meet The Spartans. And Epic Movie. And Vampires Suck. They're two comedy directors/writers without a comedic bone in their bodies. Now, we have the next addition to this wonderful series of brilliant satires: The Starving Games. Fans of The Hunger Games will be pretty pissed at this one, but I don't think filmmakers Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer (known for quite funny 300 spoof Meet the Spartans and Twilight spanker Vampires Suck, care much. The names of the characters in The Starving Games are quite funny, with Maiara Walsh of TV's Switched at Birth and Zombieland series playing Kantmiss Evershot as opposed to Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss Everdeen in the super-successful Hunger Games franchise, the second film of which opens on November 22nd via Lionsgate. Hysterically, there's even Hugh Janus and...Jason Statham? I mean hell, there's even Iron Man and Nick Fury in this poster below. Also in the cast are Cody Allen Christian, Brant Daugherty, Ross Wyngaarden, Dean West and Diedrich Bader.

Earlier this year, it was reported that Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer, the geniuses behind "Date Movie," "Meet the Spartans," and "Vampires Suck," were developing a new movie, called "Superfast!," which will be a spoof of the "Fast and Furious" franchise. And now comes word that Dave Pavinski (stuntman on "Underworld: Rise of the Lycans") will play Vin Diesel's Dominic Torretto character and Alex Ashbaugh (The Canyons) will play Paul Walker's Brian O'Conner character. Meanwhile, Lili Mirojnick (Cloverfield) and Andrea Navedo ("Law and Order - Special Victims Unit") has already been cast in the roles Jordana Brewster and Michelle Rodriguez play in "Fast and Furious" films. "Superfast" is set to begin shooting in October in Los Angeles.
