The character of Dr. Marvin Monroe (Harry Shearer) first appeared in the "The Simpsons" episode "There's No Disgrace Like Home". He would show up during the show's early seasons when Homer (Dan Castellaneta) was preoccupied with his family's perceived normal-ness. Homer looked at his home and saw the suburban ideals of a nuclear family slowly exploding. To combat this, Homer pawned the family TV -- an object he saw as problematic anyway -- and bought therapy sessions with Dr. Marvin Monroe, a family psychiatrist who promised "family bliss or double your money back." It seems the Simpsons were so dysfunctional that even Dr. Monroe couldn't cure them (a shock therapy session goes horribly awry).
Dr. Monroe typically appeared whenever "The Simpsons" required the word of a psychiatric specialist to aid in plot points. He was one of the show's many regular supporting characters, relegated to the background. However, the character...

This is the third of three dispatches from the 2022 Toronto International Film Festival. You can read the first here and the second here.
As always, the final days of the fest were considerably lower-key than those before them, with much of the press having departed and most of the buzzy films having screened. The homestretch, however, is when lower-profile gems are often discovered, as I was reminded by a few screenings.
The world premiere of the documentary feature Freedom on Fire: Ukraine’s Fight for Freedom (still seeking U.S. distribution), Evgeny Afineevsky’s follow-up to his 2015 Oscar-nominated Winter on Fire: Ukraine’s Fight for Freedom, proved to be the definitive portrait, thus far, of the ongoing Russian atrocities — and remarkable resistance to them — in Ukraine. The Marilyn Monroe Estate is not involved in Andrew Dominik's upcoming Netflix biopic "Blonde," but they do support Ana de Armas' casting — despite the recent backlash. Some social media users expressed concern about de Armas' accent in the film's trailer, which doesn't match Monroe's iconic soft-toned, breathy lilt. The Marilyn Monroe Estate, however, is unfazed.
Marc Rosen, president of entertainment at Authentic Brands Group (Abg) — the company that owns the Marilyn Monroe Estate — told Variety:

At the height of her stardom, Marilyn Monroe took an 18-month hiatus from Hollywood. The screen icon, who would have turned 95 on June 1, was battling ill health, which was linked to her barbiturate dependency and fragile psyche, and she was recovering from a miscarriage. So Monroe turned her back on movies for a time, and sought refuge with Arthur Miller, her playwright husband, holing up in their homes in New York City, Connecticut and Long Island.
In April 1958, Monroe was finally ready to return to the medium that had made her globally famous, with Variety proclaiming “Monroe to Do ‘Hot.'” The Hollywood trade went on to report that after a “two-year absence” Monroe was slated to play “a band singer in the 20s period comedy,” which would be directed by Billy Wilder and was entitled “Some Like It Hot.” Monroe’s two male co-stars had yet to be cast...

Following up his extraordinary, Oscar-nominated James Baldwin documentary I Am Not Your Negro, director Raoul Peck is returning with an ambitious, four-part series premiering on HBO. Set to premiere over two nights on April 7 and 8, Exterminate All the Brutes takes a visually arresting journey through time, into the darkest hours of humanity. Through his personal voyage, Peck deconstructs the making and masking of history, digging deep into the exploitative and genocidal aspects of European colonialism––from America to Africa and its impact on society today––challenging the audience to re-think the very notion of how history is being written.
With scripted portions led by Josh Hartnett, the film also utilizes documentary, archival, and animation footage, exploring the 12th century Crusades through the presidency of Donald Trump. “As writers, creators, filmmakers we have no choice but to try and reflect our societies and give some sort of analysis of them the best way we can,...

The public can’t seem to resist stories about the private lives of movie stars. We’re fascinated by who these beautiful flickering gods might be off-screen, and that fascination is exacerbated a thousand times over by the fact that these beautiful flickering gods don’t want us to know. It’s a recipe for infatuation and disaster. It’s also a recipe for some very bad movies. The truth may be stranger than fiction, but it’s awful hard to bridge the gap between the two.
“Film Stars Don’t Die in Liverpool” is a tawdrier, more tragic, but similarly superficial “My Week with Marilyn,” devoted to the dying days of an actress who always lived in Monroe’s voluptuous shadow. By the time it ends, that darkness has grown so complete that it’s hard to tell whose story we’re even watching.
Gloria Grahame was born for black-and-white.

Maika Monroe, Maggie Grace and Bonnie Bedelia star in The Scent Of Rain And Thunder - an unmissable indie thriller...
There are some movies that come at us with all the subtlety of a charging rhino. There are others that encourage us to lean in, listen closely, and absorb every detail. The Scent Of Rain And Lightning, a mystery-thriller based on a novel by Nancy Pickard, falls into the latter category - which is one reason why it's such a must-see movie.
Told with intimate close-ups and a dreamlike blurring of the past and present, The Scent Of Rain And Lightning tells the story of Jody Linder (Maika Monroe), an Oklahoman 20-something whose psychological wounds are reopened when a lank-haired, loathsome character named Billy (Brad Carter) is suddenly released from prison. When Jody was still a child, her parents were both brutally murdered, and the finger of suspicion quickly fell on Billy.

Grimm took a turn for the absurd this week in an episode that was for the most part silly, whimsical and played to the cast’s comedic talents. The one-off episode – which in no way adds to this final season’s narrative – feels like the ensemble just really wanted to serve up a slice of fun before the series finale next month.
It feels like that the writers are paying tribute to the cast’s time on the show, with flashbacks to Nick and Monroe’s first meeting (Truble clearly stole Nick’s look from season one) and Rosalee and Monroe’s first kiss. There’s a sentimental...

One of the more intense moments from The Walking Dead comic book series is Rick’s hand-to-hand fight with Hilltop resident Ethan, and for our latest Q&A feature, we caught up with Justin Kucsulain, the actor who played Ethan on Season 6 of AMC’s The Walking Dead. Kucsulain discussed filming the gritty fight scene with Andrew Lincoln, being on the set of the Hilltop, his role in Season 2 of Bloodline, and more.
Thanks for taking the time to answer some questions for us, Justin. When were you first inspired to become an actor and what drove you to pursue acting as a career?
Justin Kucsulain: I was first inspired to become an actor on the set of the 2013 Marvel summer blockbuster, Iron Man 3, working as a featured extra. At the time I was just a “big, fit dude” with zero craft, working strictly off of natural ability.

Is ITV really going to bring back Cold Feet?
That's the rumour, with the broadcaster apparently looking to plug the Downton-shaped hole in its schedule with a revival of the popular comedy-drama.

Nesbitt's carefree lothario Adam Williams met his match in Helen Baxendale's Rachel - the couple overcame infidelity and infertility but were denied lasting happiness when Rachel was killed in a traffic accident.

He fronted BBC One's gritty cop series Murphy's Law from 2003-07, led Steven Moffat's supernatural thriller Jekyll - also in 2007 - and played the title character in ITV's short-lived medical drama Monroe (2011-12).

Jason-Isaacs-in-Case-Histories
Within the crowded field of British detective shows, Case Histories truly stands out as one of the very best contemporary dramas in recent years. It’s not as gloomy as Vera, not as gory as Luther, and it lacks the frivolity of Midsomer Murders. What it does offer is a realistic central character played brilliantly by Harry Potter bad-guy Jason Isaacs. Jackson Brodie (Isaacs) is broody but he’s positively jovial when compared with Wallander. He’s something of a lady’s man and could be described as Scotland’s answer to Jim Bergerac only with a penchant for cigarettes rather than booze. Brodie has his demons and he’s not immune to the odd cock-up but he’s a good guy at heart and he usually unravels the perplexing mysteries that land in his lap.
Case Histories ran for two seasons each comprised of three feature length mysteries.

Grimm is currently in danger of moving from formulaic to repetitive. Here's Christine's review of Last Fight...

4.3 Last Fight
This week’s episode of Grimm, Last Fight, seemed a little more filler than killer. As much as you can’t expect lightning-fast plot developments and wall-to-wall action every week, you should be able to come away with more at the end of the episode than a shrug and a hope that next week’s is better.
Nick’s experiencing strange visions, Trubel is being courted by a secret Wesen-hunting task force and Wu’s sniffing around for the truth – yet nothing really happened to move any of these plotlines along.
Chavez abducts Trubel off the street in order to confirm her suspicion that she’s a Grimm. We discover the Fed’s recruiting for a covert group of operatives that track down Wesen wrongdoers, although their...

Alex Kurtzman has pretty much confirmed his old partner's comments from earlier this week that Sony remains undecided about the future of the Spider-Man franchise, namely its spin-offs, at the moment with everything still uncertain:
"Everybody is still figuring it out. It’s all up for grabs, right now. We’re just trying to figure it out. Everything is still on the table, right now. Because it’s a universe outside of the Spider-Man universe, even though it’s connected to it, those movies have to stand on their own.

Memoirs of an Invisible Man
Directed by John Carpenter
Written by William Goldman and Robert Collector
1992, USA
Chevy Chase is something of a mystery. In the mid-1970s through the late-1980s, the quirky comedian starred in a number of well-known films. Many of said films highlighted Chase’s strongly unique comedic style. Cynicism and goofy charm were the actor’s best attributes and this very appealing personality even seemed to inspire actors today like Jason Lee and Ryan Reynolds. This suave funnyman persona suited Chase well, but as the 80s started winding down, audiences and critics seemed to have grown tired of the actor’s predictability and somewhat stale brand of humor. He did manage, however, to squeeze out one fun little performance in 1992’s Memoirs of an Invisible Man.

One of last year’s very best new series was Starz‘s Da Vinci’s Demons. Starz agreed with that assessment and awarded it a second season almost immediately. We haven’t heard much about that second season since Starz released a trailer and some pics back in October.
But the wait for more is over. Starz has now released a really excellent “closer look” trailer, along with a press release and premiere date. Mark your calendars for Saturday, March 22 at 9/8c and the nine weeks that follow. If the new and former trailers below are any indication, we have a lot of great Renaissance TV coming our way again this spring.

Season 1 of Da Vinci’s Demons, which aired during the first quarter of this year, has to be one of the most beautiful series we’ve had on TV. The historic-with-an-edge costumes, the natural and created sets, and of course Bear McCreary‘s award-winning music, offered an incredible visual and aural feast.
Though we don’t have any new music clips, today we do have the first promotional pics of 2014′s Season 2, and they are absolutely gorgeous. Except for maybe Leo’s hair in those last two…
Happily, the mysterious storylines were also terrific and included a supernatural twist, and left us with quite a setup for the second season. Today Starz has released a synopsis of where we will be starting off when Season 2 premieres next year:

In the NBC dark fairytale series Grimm, there are creatures which seemed to have stepped right out of one of your nightmares. But not all creatures are to be feared. Known as wesen, some are good and some are evil, just like their human counterparts. Having just found out about the wesen world, Nick Burkhardt (David Giuntoli) also found out that he is a descendent of a special lineage known as Grimms. In the first couple of seasons of Grimm, Nick’s fiancé Juliette was living blissfully unaware of the wesen world and the particular new duties of her fiancé outside of his detective work. But finally as the end of Season 2, Nick revealed his secret life and this other supernatural world to Juliette. Unfortunately, just as Juliette was beginning to take it all in stride and get used to the idea of living with wesen all around, up came a zombie apocalypse.

Sarah Parish has admitted that she was shocked by ITV's decision to axe Monroe last year.
The medical drama surprisingly came to an end after ITV decided to call time on the series in November 2012.
Parish - now starring in the BBC's Atlantis - described the decision as "bizarre".
She told Pa: "I don't want to put myself out of a job with regards to commissioning editors, but I think it was a bizarre decision.
"Peter Bowker's one of the best writers, and James Nesbitt was in the role of his life. We were all like, 'Wow, can't quite believe it'. But that's the business, isn't it?
"You've just got to put a smile on your face and go 'Okay', otherwise you'll end up really angry and bitter and sad."
Monroe first aired in March 2011 and starred Nesbitt as Dr Gabriel Monroe, a maverick neurosurgeon.
