Based on an original screenplay by Martyn Hesford, the film is currently in development with the BFI Film Fund and is expected to go into production in 2015.
Sir Danny La Rue, OBE was an British entertainer known for his singing and cross-dressing performances.
Noble, former artistic director of the Royal Shakespeare Company, said: “What drew me to the project was Martyn’s brilliant and funny screenplay which tells two unexpected love stories in an unexpected way.
“Over the course of his life Danny stood at the fulcrum of a changing British society and his story is filled with potent images where a man could dress as a woman and rub shoulders with royalty and gangsters alike.”

Looks like Ghost Rider and Anakin Skywalker are going back in time together.
The Wrap reports that Nicolas Cage and Hayden Christensen are attached to star in Outcast, a period piece film that takes place during the 10th Century and follows a warrior who tries to save a princess. The movie will take place in China and be filmed there too, becoming the latest in the recent trend of productions moving overseas in an attempt to capitalize on the massive Chinese audience. (Iron Man 3, Looper, etc.)
Stuntman Nick Powell is making his directorial debut with the film, which has a $25 million budget through Arclight Films. James Dormer (The Holding) wrote the script, and at this point we're not sure what roles either of these guys will be playing in the film. It's a safe bet that Christensen will be the warrior, but who will Cage play? Common sense would dicatate that he'd stay far,...

For their seventh annual edition, the Spooky Movie International Horror Film Festival is really blowing things up!
Well, not literally. But the world’s premiere horror movie fest is expanding to over double its regular size, screening over 50 films on nine terrifying nights Oct. 10-18 at its new home, the prestigious AFI Silver Theatre in Silver Spring, Maryland.
The scares kick off on the 10th with the return of local fave filmmaker Richard Bates, Jr. with the feature-length version of Excision about a teenage girl obsessed with becoming a surgeon. The film co-stars John Waters, Malcolm McDowell and Traci Lords. Bates’ original short Excision on which the feature is based screened at Spooky Movie back in 2008.
A few other Spooky Movie alumni who are back with highly anticipated new films include Mike Davis‘ “green” horror movie President Wolfman, which is composed entirely of public domain footage mixed with a rip-roarin...

UK thriller The Holding made its Us debut at Fantastic Fest in Austin, TX last year, but as of yet there has been no word about a Us DVD distro. That is until Camelot Entertainment swooped in and grabbed the rights to the film. Now it's just a matter of time until we can all experience the claustrophobic creepiness that is The Holding.
Although no official release date has yet been announced, Camelot is excited to get The Holding out into our sweaty, waiting hands. The film, directed by Susan Jacobson, stars Kierston Wareing (It's a Free World, Fish Tank), Vincent Regan (300, Clash of the Titans), David Bradley (Harry Potter series, Hot Fuzz) and Terry Stone (Rollin' With The Nines). Check out the trailer below.

The British Horror Film Festival, now in its second year, took place in London and Bournemouth over October 14th and 15th 2011, boasting a line-up of new home-grown genre fare. As well as the three films covered below, the festival opened with the premier of vampire thriller “The Reverend”, directed by Neil Jones (best known for boxing bio “Risen”) and starring Rutger Hauer, Tamer Hassan and Pinhead himself, Doug Bradley, and also included horror comedy “Kill Keith” and a showcase of short films. The Holding “The Holding” might seem somewhat of an odd choice for a festival designed around showing off genre talent, given that it’s not really a horror film at all, but a tightly wound rural suspense thriller with a few touches of murder and madness thrown in. Marking the feature debut of director Susan Jacobson, the film stars Kierston Wareing (recently in “Fish Tank” and “Basement”) as its chief woman in peril,...

It’s hardly surprising that Susan Jacobson’s thriller The Holding is her [feature] directorial debut. Susan is an individual who is fascinated by human nature and the extremes of the individual, so this meditation on secrets and violence – from a script by James Dormer – gives her plenty of room to display her exceptional skills as a genre filmmaker.

The Holding begins with a dark action and stumbles its way through thriller territory, making pit stops along the way to undermine itself every time it starts to get gritty. Cassie Naylor (Kierston Wareing) is a tough woman whose farm is struggling, whose teenage daughter Hannah (Skye Lourie) is rebelling, and whose youngest daughter Amy (Maisie Lloyd) is beginning to get curious about everything around her. Even though a friendly old man called Cooper (David Bradley) helps out with the cows and the sewage pump, the holding is still not turning a profit. Bills are piling up, and Cassie’s neighbor Karsten (Terry Stone) is overtly obsessed with buying the land one way or another. That’s when aimless drifter Aden (Vincent Regan) enters the picture. He solves a few problems for Cassie and her young girls but ultimately becomes one himself. The biggest element of the entire film is Regan’s ability to terrify with just...

The DVD and theatrical releases of the horror and thriller films by Karen Lam, Danishka Esterhazy, Barbara Stepansky, and Susan Jacobson, respectively, are all released, like, now.
Kierston Wareing in Susan Jacobson's "The Holding"
Karen Lam's Stained is now on iTunes, Amazon, and can be bought at Barnes & Noble on DVD in Canada and the United States! Stained is about a reclusive book store owner, played by Tinsel Corey of Twilight fame, who begins to unravel when she gets back together with her abusive boyfriend. Karen Lam is a really great director; her short film Doll Parts is a selection of the Viscera 2011 Film Festival.
Danishka Esterhazy's Black Field, a gothic thriller (think "Wuthering Heights"), is being released this weekend of September 10th at the Toronto International Film Festival! It's also airing on Canada's Superchannel in October and can be purchased directly (in Canada only) through Century Street.

The Holding
Stars: David Bradley, Vincent Regan, Kierston Wareing, Georgia Groome, Skye Lourie | Written by James Dormer | Directed by Susan Jacobson
It’s not exactly an original tale to tell: that of the too good to be true stranger, who worms their way into your affections, erasing that initial nagging feeling that they weren’t all they claimed to be. That maybe they were too good to be true.
But The Holding tells its tale in a remote, rural location, makes the enigmatic stranger a wandering farm hand, and makes the central protagonist a strong willed mother of two with a dark secret. And it works.
I had no expectations for this going in, but it pleased enormously with its character development, slow burn, and intelligent plotting. The cast are uniformly excellent, dealing with some risky subjects with integrity. Of particular note are central protagonist Kierston Wareing, who is totally convincing throughout,...

The Holding
Directed by Susan Jacobson
Starring Georgia Groome, David Bradley and Vincent Regan
UK 2011
The first of the extensive line-up of British films this year at Frightfest came in the form of the unappetising The Holding – a grimy thriller set on a farm in the English countryside that sees a lone mother and her two daughters befriended by a mysterious stranger who turns up claiming to be a friend of her dead husband, his actual motives and history proving far more sinister than they could imagine.
It’s safe to say that I wasn’t looking forward to this film due to it’s bland setting, unimaginative set-up, and, to be honest; English background. I expected it to be a poorly made, boring, muddy affair with little to no panache or excitement. I was pleasantly surprised.
I would hardly go out of my way to see it again but...

Al White will be covering London’s Film4 Frightfest again this year, and one of the premieres we are looking forward to is Susan Jacobson’s The Holding, a paranormal thriller which has the honour of being the only film screening in main competition that is directed by a woman. Personally I could use more horror films directed by woman. Here is the trailer.

This "A heart-pounding suspense thriller" from the United Kingdom is set on an isolated farm in England's beautiful, rugged Peak District.
Directed by Susan Jacobson, through her company Pistachip Pictures, The Holding has just finished filming and is in post-production to be distributed by Av Pictures Ltd.
