Julia Garner is still hung up on the Madonna biopic.
After being cast as the Material Girl pop icon in June 2022, the film was shelved by Universal in January 2023. Madonna, who co-wrote, produced, and is set to direct her own life story for the big screen, recently announced a world tour.
However, “Inventing Anna” alum Garner teased that’s not the end of Madonna’s biopic.
“I don’t want to tell too much,” Garner said to Entertainment Tonight. “I’m going to keep things…fingers crossed.”
Garner reportedly endured an intense audition process to land the role of Madonna. The so-called boot camp was also attended by Florence Pugh, Alexa Demie, Odessa Young, and Emma Laird, with singers Bebe Rexha and Sky Ferreira also having previously been considered for the lead part. Julia Fox was rumored to be cast as Madonna’s longtime friend and fellow actress Debi Mazar.

Madonna discussed her decision to take her biopic into her own hands and gave an update on the Julia Garner-starring film in a new interview with Variety.
It was previously revealed nearly two years ago that the Material Girl herself would co-write (with Diablo Cody) and direct the still-untitled movie.
“I have a very long script that is really hard for me to make shorter. I’ve been whittling away at it, but it’s like hacking off my limbs,” Madonna told Variety.

Julia Garner may be thanking her lucky stars and soon start striking a pose. Variety reported on Tuesday that Garner, an Emmy Award winner for “Ozark” and contender again this year, is the front runner to nab the highly coveted role of Madonna in an upcoming Universal biopic about the singer-actor-author-superstar. The film will be directed by the international pop sensation herself. (This will be Ms. Ciccone’s first time behind the camera since 2011’s “W.E.”)
Word is that Odessa Young, Florence Pugh, and Alexa Demie were among the many in contention for the role, before the “Inventing Anna,” “Ozark,” and “The Assistant” star pulled ahead of the pack. The casting process hasn’t been simple reads via Zoom, but a reportedly months-long process involving work with choreographers from Madonna’s team and singing sessions with the director herself. This project promises to be intense.

Brilliant Pictures have unveiled first look images from upcoming shark thriller “Deep Fear” starring “Gossip Girl’s” Ed Westwick and “House of Gucci’s” Madalina Ghenea. The company is launching worldwide sales in Cannes.
In the first images, Ghenea is pictured in her diving gear underwater (above) and huddled with Wetwick on the top deck of a ship (below). Brilliant Pictures also released a solo image of Westwick on a boat pointing a gun.
In “Deep Fear,” Ghenea plays Naomi in the film, a yachtswoman embarking on a solo trip in the Caribbean. Her last stop is Grenada, where she plans to rendezvous with her boyfriend Jackson (Westwick), until a storm forces her off course and into the paths of drug traffickers. Breakout “House of Gucci” star Madalina Ghenea is set to lead shark survival thriller “Deep Fear” alongside Ed Westwick.
Ghenea, who plays classic movie star Sophia Loren in the fashion film, will take on the role of accomplished yachtswoman Naomi who embarks on a solo trip through the Caribbean to meet her boyfriend Jackson (played by Westwick) in Grenada.
When a storm forces Naomi of course, she encounters survivors of a shipwreck who, it soon transpires, are actually drug traffickers. As a member of the Academy and a three-time Oscar nominee for her work in films including “Walk the Line,” “W.E.” and “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” costume designer Arianne Phillips makes no secret of her excitement — and support — for the opening of the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures on Sept. 30.
“Whether you’re a film fan or a filmmaker, to be able to learn about the artistry of filmmaking and all the artists is something that’s an extension of my purpose,” says Phillips, who has donated a cache of costumes to the institution, including a prototype dress for Reese Witherspooon from “Walk the Line” and an array of pieces from “Hedwig and the Angry Inch.” “I actually owned all the costumes from ‘Hedwig,’ which was part of the deal I made, because it was made on a prayer and a dime,” she explains.

I keep debating with myself how much I should hedge my bets in my Golden Globe predictions, particularly with regard to three actors who are double-nominated in overlapping categories: Andra Day, Leslie Odom Jr., and Sacha Baron Cohen. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association is small enough (fewer than 100 members) that voters could theoretically negotiate certain outcomes, especially if they want to spread the wealth and make sure everyone is taken care of (though other times they just give everything to “La La Land”). Might they do that here?
Day is nominated for Best Film Drama Actress and Best Original Song (“Tigress and Tweed”) for the film “The United States vs. Billie Holiday.” Odom is up for Best Film Supporting Actor and Best Original Song (“Speak Now”) for “One Night in Miami.” And Cohen contends for Best Film Comedy/Musical Actor for “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm” and Best Film Supporting Actor for...

Looks like Madonna is her own lucky star.
In what seems to be an unprecedented creative move, the pop icon will direct a film about her life and career — one that’s been heavily teased on her social media accounts, through script sessions with her Oscar-winning co-writer Diablo Cody.
That Madonna, whose staggering five-decade career has seen countless musical reinventions and a run at filmmaking and acting, would direct her own journey from New York City’s slums to the heights of global stardom is beyond rare. The super-famous are often involved peripherally as creative consultants and executive producers in their own adapted stories (like recent awards players like “Bohemian Rhapsody” and “Rocketman”).
The untitled film has landed at Universal Pictures, under the wing of filmed entertainment group chair Donna Langley and producer Amy Pascal, whose eponymous company is set up on the Universal lot. A production timeline is unknown...

When life gives you lemons, er, quarantine, it’s best to at least try and make lemonade. That’s what Madonna and Oscar-winning screenwriter Diablo Cody are currently up to, as the pop star revealed via Instagram on Saturday. The pair appear to be working on a musically centered screenplay, according to the black-and-white video posted on Madge’s account. “When you’re stuck in a house with multiple injuries, what do you do?” she wrote. “Write a screenplay with Diablo Cody about…” and then a bunch of emojis alluding to the script being film- and music-related. Arianne Phillips is now nominated for an Oscar for Best Costume Design for her work on “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” a film she almost wasn’t a part of due to her involvement with another film. She was slated to do the costumes for a Patty Hearst biopic directed by James Mangold that ended up being canceled, which freed her up to do Quentin Tarantino‘s ode to 1960s Hollywood. “It was a twist of fate,” Phillips says in a new interview with Gold Derby, and it was certainly a delightful twist of fate for her as a major fan of Tarantino’s films. “To be in this position was something I didn’t imagine could actually happen.” Watch the exclusive video interview with Phillips above.

Taylor Swift and Andrew Lloyd Webber didn’t make the cut for their original song “Beautiful Ghosts” from “Cats” when the motion picture academy announced its shortlist for songwriters. And the reviews for the film have been, shall we say, not great. But Swift could still get her revenge at the Golden Globes, where she and Webber did earn a nom for “Ghosts.” And this isn’t the first time the Hollywood Foreign Press has nominated her, so this may be the time they decide to give her the win.
The country ingenue-turned-pop superstar has been nominated twice before at the Globes. First she contended for “Safe and Sound,” which she co-wrote with The Civil Wars and T-Bone Burnett for the film “The Hunger Games” (2012). She ended up winning a Grammy for that composition, but the Globe went to Adele‘s “Skyfall,” which went on to win the Oscar too.

Arianne Phillips is an Academy Awards contender this year for her period work as the costume designer on Quentin Tarantino’s 1969-set love letter to the Tinseltown of yore, “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.” She’s been twice-nominated before, for her work on Madonna’s “W.E.” and James Mangold’s “Walk the Line,” and has worked with other auteurs from Miloš Forman to Tom Ford.
But as revealed during a recent panel at the Key West Film Festival, moderated by IndieWire Executive Editor and Chief Film Critic Eric Kohn, being a costume designer hasn’t always been an easy ride. During the conversation, Phillips pointed out a below-the-line pay disparity that affects her behind-the-scenes craft — a trend she’s looking to change.
“Costume designers are not considered a creative position in the film industry. We’re considered a ‘technical’ position, and we’re fighting that right now,” she said.

Multiple Oscar winner Colleen Atwood on the set of "Dumbo"
As we head into the heart of festival season, the Oscar race is about to take shape. Many of the buzzier titles are finally being seen and, some will emerge as major contenders while others will fall by the wayside. That is true for most categories, but not always true for Best Costume Design. That wonderful craft award, oft celebrated here at The Film Experience, is less dependent on Best Picture buzz as other craft prizes. Let’s not forget the sole nomination likes of The Tempest, W.E. and The Invisible Woman.
It’s quite likely we’ve already seen at least one of the eventual nominees. Let's take a more thorough look at the contenders for this award...

On a Sunday morning in November 2017, Oscar-nominated costume designer and stylist Arianne Phillips pulled up to CAA for a meeting to which she’d been invited without receiving any other information.
“Reese Witherspoon was there at that meeting, and I know her because we worked together on ‘Walk the Line,’” says Phillips, who’s also worked on “Nocturnal Animals,” “W.E.” and “A Single Man,” as well as with Madonna for more than 20 years. “She told me at that time, it hadn’t been announced, that the actresses were going to wear black in solidarity [to the 2018 Globes], and would I create a pin or something for the men who’d be supporting to wear?”
The black and white Time’s Up pin that Phillips designed became a pervasive red-carpet statement for both men and women, at the Globes and other awards shows throughout the year.

Greenlit means a project is officially a go, so all you have to do is follow these leads to stay up to date. You never know where you’ll find an opportunity to land an audition! “New Gods” The DC Extended Universe is extending even further. Warner Bros. announced last week that acclaimed director Ava DuVernay will be coming on board to direct the studio’s “New Gods,” based on the DC Comics series of the same name. The project will be the beginning of a new universe to build, and they’ve picked one of the buzziest people for the job. DuVernay, who most recently directed the much-anticipated “A Wrinkle In Time,” will join Patty Jenkins of last year’s “Wonder Woman” in the female superhero director category. Unless Warner Bros. wants to have a say in who gets to add cast to the new franchise, it's likely DuVernay...

If first you don’t succeed, try and try again. That’s clearly the motto for pop icon Madonna when it comes to her directing career. She initially experimented with filmmaking with the little seen indie “Filth and Wisdom” in 2008 and then made an impressive (in context) step forward with the problematic “W.E.” in 2011. Now, the Material Girl has signed on for her third helming effort, “Taking Flight” for MGM.

“Remember Me” from “Coco” is the favorite to win the Best Original Song Oscar, but it needs to watch out for “This Is Me” from “The Greatest Showman” — not just because it’s a huge hit and NBC is using it as its Winter Olympics soundtrack, but because it’s the Golden Globe champ. Before you scream “The Globes and Oscars never pick the same song winner!”, know that they have agreed the past three years and their split choices are a relatively new phenomenon.
The Globes gave out its first song award to the title track from “Town Without Pity” (1961) — the Oscars went with “Moon River” from “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” — but didn’t start handing out the prize annually until three years later. The Globes and Oscars matched only once that decade, for “The Windmills of Your Mind” from “The Thomas Crown Affair” (1968).

The following content has been sponsored by Fox Searchlight Pictures. In a small Midwestern town, a mother searches for justice. “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri,” the acclaimed new feature from Martin McDonagh, stars Academy Award winner Frances McDormand in what critics have called one of the finest performances of her celebrated career (and one that garnered a Golden Globe win for Best Actress in a Drama Motion Picture). After months have gone by since her daughter’s murder, McDormand’s Mildred Hayes decides to challenge the apparent apathy of the town’s law enforcement in a very public way. Commissioning three billboards leading straight into the titular town, Mildred directs their messages to Ebbing’s Police Chief, William Willoughby (Academy Award nominee Woody Harrelson). What begins as a mother’s plea to avenge her daughter’s death quickly escalates into a hard-fought battle between Mildred and the entirety of Ebbing’s law enforcement unit,...

With the summer just starting, everyone's about to become familiar with Annabelle Wallis. The 32-year old actress is playing alongside Tom Cruise in this year's highly anticipated summer blockbuster hit The Mummy. And while there are many fun facts to know about Annabelle—like her uncle is Richard Harris aka the original Albus Dumbledore—here are five that really stand out! 1. She Once Worked for Madonna: Annabelle took on the role of Arabella Green in the 2011 film W.E., which was co-written and directed by none other than the queen of pop herself. Unfortunately, the movie based on the real-life story of Wally Winthrop wasn't exactly a box-office success. 2. Her Best...

Movie It Looks Like Editor's Note: This post is presented in partnership with Directv and the thriller, "Mojave," which is available now, exclusively on Directv. "W.E.," 2011 Although his performance in this drama is partially obscured by an overwrought narrative that flits between equally ill-fated love affairs in different times and places, Madonna's "W.E." did afford Isaac an early romantic role as the sweet and well-meaning Evgeni. The film, which chronicles the infamous romance of King Edward VII and Wallis Simpson, juxtaposes it with the "modern" love trials and tribulations of Abbie Cornish, torn between a jerky husband and a sweet security guard (guess which one Isaac plays). At turns pragmatic and just plain appealing, it's one of of Isaac's most overlooked parts to date. "Sucker Punch," 2011 Zack Snyder's critically maligned...

Oscar Isaac has delivered another superb performance in Alex Garland's "Ex Machina." It follows a National Board of Review-winning turn in "A Most Violent Year" which, frankly, should have earned him an Academy Award nomination this past January. Of course, you could also say he should have received more recognition for his work in "Inside Llewyn Davis" and "Drive," but Isaac's time will come. Potentially with whatever projects he chooses after shooting "X-Men: Apocalypse" this summer. But, before we get to Isaac's blueprint or building his character in "Machina" let's get to the subject you probably really want him to hear about, "Star Wars: Episode VII: The Force Awakens." Frankly, the mantra for anyone working on any J.J. Abrams directed movie is that you keep your lips sealed and don't reveal anything to the press. And that means almost everything is under wraps unless you're playing Han Solo, Princess...

E!’s first-ever scripted series, The Royals, premieres this Sunday at 10 Pm. It follows a fictional British royal family, led by Queen Helena (Elizabeth Hurley), as they navigate scandals in the public eye. The show is undoubtedly influenced by the real-life shenanigans of several royal family members (*cough, Prince Harry, cough*). However, will fantasy be more salacious than fact? The show certainly has some big (read: crazy) shoes to fill.
You’d be hard-pressed to find a scandal the royal family hasn’t experienced. Affairs! Nude photos! Foot fetishes (more on that later)! For families perceived as the picture of sophistication, the Irl royals certainly know how to shake things up. Relive these moments with us to feel better about your own questionable life choices.

Madonna is getting candid about ageism in Hollywood.
In an interview with Et special correspondent Jason Dundas, Madge, 56, responds bluntly to critics who say she should "act her age."

Each year the list of eligible Original Songs that will vy for Oscar nominations holds numerous surprises. These surprises almost invariably fall under the question heading:
That movie had a song in it?"
Apart from song showcases that are an important part of the narrative - remember that sweet tense reunion between Hiccup's father and mother in How To Train your Dragon 2? - many songs are buried in their movies by way of incomplete airings or end credit positioning when people are exiting the theater -- you have to be the first music in the end credits to be eligible at all. Come second and you're outta there as Madonna learned the hard way for her end credits "Masterpiece" in W.E. (that's the name of the song, not a qualitative judgement). The other annual head-scratcher question about this category is not the mean-spirited "Why does it exist?" but the...

Oscar Isaac is making his way from indie flicks to sure-to-be blockbuster hits with roles in 2014’s A Most Violent Year, writer-director J.C. Chandor’s Oscar hopeful, and J.J. Abrams’ Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which is slated for a December 2015 release.
A Most Violent Year features Isaac as a husband and father trying to run an honest business in New York City in 1981, which is statistically the most violent year in the city’s history. The film opened AFI Fest and was recently voted best film by the National Board of Review. Isaac tied with Michael Keaton (Birdman) for best actor.
As for joining the Star Wars franchise, Isaac told IGN that the experience was “like living out a childhood dream. Being on those sets and being surrounded by those people — talking to Anthony Daniels, seeing him getting suited up, and Peter Mayhew...

It's no secret that stars aren't always on their best behaviour at all times. After all, when the whole world worships you, it can pretty easily go straight to your head. It can make you believe that the same rules of etiquette (and even the law) don't apply to you. You're above it.
We've all heard whispers of Mariah's demands for white furniture, Beyonce's insistence on brand-new toilet seats and Britney's strict orders for Cheetos and cheeseburgers. But diva behavior isn't limited to divas. A handful of actors have infamously worn out their welcome on the Toronto Film Festival's red carpet with their diva antics and entitled behaviour. And hey, we're Canadian; that kind of attitude doesn't really fly at the film festival renowned for bringing stars and regular folks together to bask in a mutual love of cinema.

A happy 56th birthday to the Queen Herself. I was out for drinks with two friends the other night (Hi, Sue & Jordan!) and somehow the conversation turned to Madonna -- I can't remember how it got there -- and the Best Actress for Evita Golden Globe was discussed. 'Her one shot at an Oscar' ...but then of course she wasn't nominated. (1996 was an overstuffed year in Best Actress of course but even if it hadn't been, The Academy probably would have resisted.) But of course it wasn't her only shot at Oscar. They've snubbed her repeatedly in that Best Original Song category though two songs she sang but didn't write won the actual gold man ("Sooner or Later" from Dick Tracy by Stephen Sondheim and "You Must Love Me" from Evita by Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber).

[Press Release] (August 4, 2014– Los Angeles, CA) – Varèse Sarabande Records will release the Penny Dreadful – Original Television Series Soundtrack digitally and on CD August 19, 2014. The soundtrack features an original score composed by Abel Korzeniowski (W.E., A Single Man). “I started looking for an expression of dark beauty, something that can be terrifying and mesmerizing at the same time -- a poisonous infatuation,” said Korzeniowski. “The most inspiring clue I got was John Logan’s [writer, producer] description of the character of Vanessa as the Mother of Evil. Seeing her not as a victim, but as a creature of a complex dual nature, both good and evil, was a defining moment for the entire musical score.” Born in Krakow, Poland, Korzeniowski studied classical composition under...

No word yet on who she’s playing, but Christina Chong has joined the burgeoning cast of J.J. Abrams’ Star Wars: Episode VII. She’s best known for acting opposite Kiefer Sutherland in this summer’s 24: Live Another Day miniseries, and also recently landed the lead female role in the digital series Halo: Nightfall. The actress should be a familiar face to British TV viewers as well, having appeared in Doctor Who, Monroe, Whitechapel and Black Mirror. She’s also had roles in the films W.E. and Legacy.
Chong joins a cast that includes Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill, Anthony Daniels, Peter Mayhew, Kenny Baker, John Boyega, Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, Oscar Isaac, Andy Serkis, Domhnall Gleeson, Lupita Nyong’o, Gwendoline Christie, Max von Sydow, Pip Andersen and Crystal Clarke.

There was talk last year of Olivier Dahan's "Grace of Monaco" being a late 2013 awards hopeful before the film got pushed back into this year.
Ever since that delay, Dahan and Harvey Weinstein have been arguing in the press over cuts and edits on the film and Dahan seemingly got his way as his version premiered at the Cannes Film Festival earlier today.
Unfortunately for both of them, the movie has been greated with universal pans. Reviews aren't just bad, they are outright scathing with some labelling it a future camp classic. Amongst some key quotes:
"It is a film so awe-inspiringly wooden that it is basically a fire-risk. The cringe-factor is ionospherically high." - Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian
"The sort of misbegotten venture no amount of clever re-editing could hope to improve." - Scott Foundas, Variety

Welcome back to Cannes Check, In Contention's annual preview of the films in Competition at next month's Cannes Film Festival, which kicks off on May 14. Taking on different selections every day, we'll be examining what they're about, who's involved and what their chances are of snagging an award from Jane Campion's jury. Next up: the film that is currently the bookies' favorite for festival gold: Nuri Bilge Ceylan's "Winter Sleep." The director: Nuri Bilge Ceylan (Turkish, 55 years old). A photographer's filmmaker -- with a BSc in electrical engineering, to boot -- Ceylan has been hovering around the world cinema A-list for over a decade, though his expansive 2011 feature "Once Upon a Time.in Anatolia" plainly sealed his place there. Having developed an interest in film in his twenties, he made his first short, "Cocoon," in 1995; it played at Cannes. His debut feature,"Kasaba," followed two years later; "Winter Sleep" is his seventh.

A story of noble heroes battling to protect priceless artworks stolen from their rightful owners during the Second World War? It sounded like Oscar bait when George Clooney's "The Monuments Men" first turned up on the horizon, and we all know how that turned out. Might it turn out any better with Helen Mirren and Harvey Weinstein leading the charge? The Oscar-winning actress has signed on for The Weinstein Company's "Woman in Gold," the true-life tale of Holocaust survivor Maria Altmann, who entered a legal battle with the Austrian government to retrieve a number of Gustav Klimt paintings taken from her family during the war. Ryan Reynolds is committed to play the lawyer who takes on her case; Daniel Brühl is in talks to play the opposition.
