As part of my post duty orders here at We Are Movie Geeks I am tasked with reviewing movies on DVD and Blu ray that may not have found an audience. Movies with little or no theatrical release, did not play very long, escaped attention, what have you.
I am proud to direct your attention to a little known film from 2011 called The Moth Diaries. First I have to say that I, like many millions of movie goers, reveled in the new screen incarnation of Wonder Woman, not only starring Gal Gadot as the original female super hero and masterfully directed by a woman, Patty Jenkins, and also starring Robin Wright, Connie Nielsen and a whole crew of the most righteous Amazons ever seen on a movie screen, wonderful!

“Alias Grace” follows the true story of poor Irish immigrant Grace Marks who, along with domestic servant James McDermott, was convicted of murdering her employer Thomas Kinnear and housekeeper Nancy Montgomery in 1843. While James was hanged, Grace received life imprisonment for her role in the crime. The conviction was highly controversial and Grace’s role in the murder was up for strong debate as to whether she took an active part in the crime or if she was simply an accessory. She was later exonerated after 30 years in jail.

It's been 16 years since the release of American Psycho, and Mary Harron hasn't done anything else that's quite so notable. Sure, she's had steady work in television and also directed a couple of disappointing movies, including The Notorious Bettie Page and The Moth Diaries. But American Psycho is a modern classic that the visionary filmmaker hasn't been able to match let alone top. Harron could finally regain that level of distinction, however, with her next feature. Deadline reports that The Family, which will be based on the Manson Family murders, reunites her with American Psycho screenwriter Guinevere Turner -- who, yes, also collaborated on Bettie Page, but this time the duo is also returning to the subject of murders and executions. Witchcraft captures an obscure subgenre of horror that’s rarely represented through similar methods (look at such varying titles as All Cheerleaders Die/The Witch/Lords Of Salem). Halloween imagery always includes green-faced, cackling witches, broomsticks and all, but films tend to focus more on their cultish behavior.
Ireland’s latest genre effort, Cherry Tree, is another such film about dark magic and satanic worship, yet even with Clive-Barker-inspired visuals, these deceiving looks are hollow to the core. It’s as terrifying as something like The Moth Diaries or Embrace Of The Vampire, which of course means there’s no terror at all – just centipedes, witches, and a fixation on cherries that’ll have your empty tummy rumbling in dissatisfaction.

Horror director Lucky McKee unfortunately remains one of those unknown, peripheral genre names, mostly thanks to a number of compromised or abandoned projects following his formidable 2002 debut, May. Over the past several years, he’s made headlines for 2011’s The Woman (another underrated gem from his filmography), and most recently the co-directed effort All Cheerleaders Die in 2013, an expansion of his 2001 short film, which is more or less the comically inclined romp you’d assume it to be. Prizing complex female characterizations, usually featuring muse Angela Bettis, McKee’s twisted visions, though few and far between, are enjoyable and entertaining, usually enhanced by a bit of subtext. About a decade ago, McKee’s sophomore feature, The Woods, would finally land on DVD in the Us following a limited festival circuit run, treated to a torturous release platform despite featuring several notable cast members. A period piece set amongst an all-girls...

What was the last great boarding school horror film? While not great, I’d count Lucky McKee’s The Woods as certianly overlooked. And while more dramatic, Antonio Campos’ Afterschool is an anxious, upsetting affair. It’s entirely too bad Mary Harron’s The Moth Diaries was a disappointment. Boarding School Horror feels like a beloved (likely thanks to…

In Dracula Untold, she plays Mirena, the wife of Vlad the Impaler - of course the man who eventually becomes Dracula. Gadon has been a part of some...

The Vice of Virtue: Brougher’s Latest Achieves Varied Results
Those familiar with Hilary Brougher’s offbeat sensibilities, as showcased in her delightful 1997 debut The Sticky Fingers of Time, and the Tilda Swinton headlined drama Stephanie Daley (2006), will be happy to know that her long awaited third film has arrived, an adaptation of Jane Mendelsohn’s 2000 Young Adult novel, Innocence. A project first announced several years ago with a revolving list of high profile names announced as being attached (Julianne Moore, Chloe Sevigny, and Abigail Breslin, for instance), it seems Brougher’s had a bit of difficulty getting this project put together, which is evident in the final product, a film reminiscent of vintage stabs at Ya thrillers back in the 70s and 80s, such as several classic Disney titles. While it never quite succeeds as an effective thriller, Brougher manages to strike a moody ambience with this familiar material,...

Since the days of American Psycho — a brilliant adaptation of Bret Easton Ellis' novel starring Christian Bale in one of his best roles — director Mary Harron has been steadily working. Elsewhere in this week's chart, 3D animated movie Epic is a new entry at number three and horror The Moth Diaries bows at number seven.
Oz the Great and Powerful experienced a huge surge in ticket sales to re-enter the chart at number ten.

The Hangover Part III (15)
(Todd Phillips, 2013, Us) Bradley Cooper, Zach Galifianakis, Ed Helms, Ken Jeong, John Goodman, Justin Bartha, Melissa McCarthy. 100 mins
Here we go again, ostensibly for the last time, and if this doesn't capture the magic of the first Hangover it's at least less offensive than the second, which isn't much of a recommendation. An intervention over Alan's mental health and the hunt for Mr Chow is what sets in motion the Wtf escapades and male bonding this time, but it all feels a little forced and familiar. If anything, the "wolf pack" is now too tame.

Being a teenager is hard. We.ve seen examples of it time and time again, both on film and in real life. Teenagers in broken homes have it even worse, as we.ve also seen on film a bunch of times. So in order to stand out in the crowd, a movie that centers on this kind of storyline has to pull some tricks to be heard above the din. I.m not sure if the above trailer for As Cool As I Am does that exactly. The film is adapted from the 1994 novel by Pete Fromm with a screenplay from Virginia Korus Spragg (An Unfinished Life), and Max Mayer (Adam) directing. Sarah Bolger (The Moth Diaries) plays Lucy Diamond, a teenage girl who suddenly finds herself reaching maturity just as her parents, played by Claire Danes (Homeland) and James Marsden (Robot and Frank), are losing theirs. Apparently the deal...

The Great Gatsby (12A)
(Baz Luhrmann, 2013, Us) Leonardo DiCaprio, Tobey Maguire, Carey Mulligan, Joel Edgerton, Elizabeth Debicki. 143 mins
No one's disputing that Luhrmann can put on a show, but can he tell a story? In a way, F Scott Fitzgerald's 1920s parable is a perfect fit: a study of surfaces and seduction and the hollowness of the wealthy. The hedonism and vulgarity are ravishing to behold and the hand-tinted-photo aesthetic is gorgeous. When the fireworks die down, however, that artificiality works against the romantic tragedy, and the characters are too flat to really stir any great emotions. Maybe that's the point.

So many names have been tossed around over the years for The Crow reboot, but news started to pick up over the last few weeks. You may have heard rumors of Tom Hiddleston and Alexander Skarsgard, but someone else is going to be playing Eric Draven. According to Deadline, Luke Evans is currently in negotiations to start in Relativity’s remake of The Crow.
Evans was previously seen in The Raven and Immortals, and recently signed on for Universal’s new Dracula movie. Before he appears in Dracula, we’ll see him as the villain in Fast & Furious 6 this summer. Apparently, Evans has been the first choice for the role, but his busy schedule was causing conflicts. In order to accommodate his schedule, the movie will not begin filming until next year.
Back in January, 2012, Relativity Media announced that F. Javier Gutiérre would direct the movie and Jesse Wigutow would write the script.

The 1970’s were the end of an era for the beloved Hammer Studios, to the chagrin of a legion of fans the world over. Gothic castles and the supernatural in horror films were slowly giving way to more realistic horrors with the introduction of films like Psycho, Blood and Black Lace, and Rosemary’s Baby.
The Vampire Lovers came near the end of the line for Hammer Studios, yet the film was a success, proving that the old formula still had some strength in the ever-changing culture. Somewhat hampered by a hopelessly old fashioned script, the film manages to stay current with its lesbian overtones, that even today would be titillating in certain circles.
Ingrid Pitt stars as the age old temptress Carmilla Karnstein, whom along with her family, the Karnsteins, have torn a path of destruction through Europe murdering wealthy families for generations. Over the course of Carmilla’s hunt,...

Crush is definitely the Swim_fan of the current “CW” generation of horrors. It’s a story that’s been seen again and again, whether in big screen adaptations such as The Roommate or made for teevee Lifetime over the top presentations, it’s a pretty worn out plot line. Luckily for Malik Bader and cast, they manage to breathe a little bit of fresh air into the horror trope and present an entertaining teen thriller.
The movie centers around Scott (Lucas Till, X-Men: First Class), an up and coming high school soccer star who is definitely catching the eye of numerous ladies in town. After an accident and surgery, Scott is training himself back up to speed when people around him start getting harassed, injured, and a number of other things that jump the scale of danger in every scene. Jules (Sarah Bolger, The Moth Diaries) is Scott’s...

The Playlist perhaps puts it best in the opening line of their own post regarding this news: “How the mighty have fallen…” Remember how Mary Harron directed American Psycho? Do you think she does? After her work there, Harron could have done just about anything she wanted – which made it all the more confounding when she began her slow descent into half-cocked features that barely even left a mark (The Notorious Bettie Page, The Moth Diaries) and one-shot directing gigs on various television series. What next? Obviously a Lifetime movie about Anna Nicole Smith, creatively titled The Anna Nicole Story. Pardon? Deadline Hollywood reports that Harron will helm the television movie from a screenplay by John Rice and Joe Batteer, a biopic that is said to trace the transformation of Smith, from small town girl Vickie Lynn Hogan to Hollywood bombshell, all the way to the tragic end. Agnes Bruckner is set to play Smith. Former...

'Lifetime's upcoming Anna Nicole Smith biopic might turn out to be gorier than one would expect. "American Psycho" writer/director Mary Harron has signed on to direct "The Anna Nicole Story," about ill-fated Playboy Playmate Anna Nicole Smith, a representative of Harron's told TheWrap. Harron, who most recently directed the 2011 Irish-Canadian horror film "The Moth Diaries," also co-wrote and helmed the 2005 biopic "The Notorious Bettie Page," so she has some experience in documenting the lives of pin-up models. How the mighty have fallen... There was a time when Mary Harron was looking like a rare and unique talent in the filmmaking world, particularly after coming off the one-two punch of "I Shot Andy Warhol" and "American Psycho." But it has been dimishing returns since then, with most of the aughts spent working in television and one feature, the potentially promising but ultimately undercooked "The Notorious Bettie Page." Last year her vampire flick "The Moth Diaries" dropped with a barely a sound, and now she's doing Lifetime schlock. The network who doesn't know a National Enquirer story they can't turn into a movie are moving ahead with "The Anna Nicole Story," with Agnes Bruckner set to portray the late model/reality tv star. In case you've been living under a rock, Anna Nicole Smith gained fame as a model for Playboy and Guess? and quickly found her life becoming...

Boarding schools seem to be a hotbed of sexual experimentation, at least that's how it seems from watching them on film. Interestingly, it's a trend that doesn't seem to be going away anytime soon. We've seen all-girls dormitories as a plot device since the 1930s, and yet there have been three released in the last year alone. Is it a coincidence that four out of eight of our Best Lesbian Boarding School Movies are directed and/or written by out women, two of which are said to be based on real life stories? Seems as if boarding schools might not be punishment as much as they are places to find your first love.

Mary Harron, director of such gripping and darkly funny films as American Psycho, I Shot Andy Warhol, and the surprisingly great The Notorious Bettie Page, delivers her first new film since 2005 with The Moth Diaries. This is a “vampire” film with very little bite, yet there is some blood flowing through this creature’s veins.
Rebecca (Sarah Bolger) is a sixteen-year-old student at a rather fancy, and old fashioned religious girl’s school. She’s popular and life seems good until Ernessa (Lily Cole) arrives and steals the attentions of Rebecca’s roommate and best friend, Lucie (Sarah Gadon). Rebecca soon begins to resent Lucie and becomes jealous and concerned about Ernessa… because she thinks she may be a vampire!
The plot fuses elements of two vampire staples, Dracula and Carmilla , and tries to bring them into the modern world with mixed results. Based on the novel of the same name,...

Chicago – Sarah Bolger is a truly lovely actress. She delivered one of the best child performances of all time in Jim Sheridan’s 2002 family drama, “In America,” and over the last decade, has blossomed into a real screen beauty. Hopefully it will only be a matter of time before the actress starts getting offered projects more worthy of her abilities. No one this lovely should be sentenced to a film as dreary as “The Moth Diaries.”
Here is one of the most curiously amateurish thrillers in many a moon. It was directed by Mary Harron, whose track record up until now has been peerless (“I Shot Andy Warhol,” “American Psycho,” “The Notorious Bettie Page”). The wit and urgency of her earlier work appears to have evaporated entirely from this flat horror fantasy with a scare factor equivalent to a particularly cheesy episode of “Are You Afraid of the Dark?” Characters...

Moviefone's New Release Pick of the Week "The Pirates! Band of Misfits" What's It About? Hugh Grant voices the Pirate Captain, a lovable loser and the leader of a ship full of swashbuckling outcasts. The Captain's quest to win the coveted "Pirate of the Year" award sets him on a slapstick journey involving a desperate-for-ladies Charles Darwin, a too-smart-for-humans chimpanzee and a gluttonous, murderous Queen Victoria. I have no idea how studios choose their release dates, but this week is packed. It's not necessarily a week loaded with quality films, but considering the lackluster weeks recently I have no idea why they wouldn't have waited to unload some of these a couple weeks ago when they could have dominated a weaker marketplace. Some of the more intriguing titles are catalog selections in my "Even More" selection including individual releases of the Extended Editions of Lord of the Rings on Blu-ray and 100th Anniversary Blu-ray releases of Universal's Abbott & Costello Meet Frankenstein, Airport and Harvey not to mention season releases of "The Walking Dead", "Homeland" and "Once Upon a Time". That said, there are a few solid titles among this week's releases and be sure and check out the new release dates as I now have confirmed dates for the DVD and Blu-ray releases of Prometheus, The Amazing Spider-Man and Brave.

You want to hear something interesting? The top selling version of The Hunger Games on Amazon as I write this up is the [amazon asin="B008602KQI" text="Instant Video Version"], not the DVD or the Blu-ray. As far as I can remember this is the first time I've ever seen this happen with a new release. It's probably only because I believe Amazon releases those a week early to entice people to buy them before they then buy a physical copy, but it's a clear sign to me that the times... they are a'changin'.
Jaws I wrote up my review of this new Blu-ray release of Jaws just last night and highly recommend fans of the film pick it up. It's got an immaculate transfer, vivid, cleaned up and vastly superior to anything I've ever seen plus a restored audio track and, for the first time ever on home video, the feature length making-of documentary "The Shark is Still Working.

A strange new girl named Ernessa arrives at school. She begins to come between best friends Lucie and Rebecca. People start to die. Sinister forces appear to be afoot.
There's a lot of unnecessary and bizarre foreshadowing and symbolism. A single drop of blood red colored fingernail polish dramatically falls, etc… All of it is about as subtle as a hurricane.
The film draws parallels between its own characters and the gothic tale Carmella. Like most of the film, the references hit the viewer squarely over the head, to ensure you get all of the film’s nuances.
I’m not sure if it was intended, but there was a lot of parallels to Suspiria; the all female boarding school, the occult elements, the use of color to tell a story. But, The Moth Diaries falls far short of even a bad Argento film.'

Snow White and the Huntsman: Dark Forest monster vs. Kristen Stewart
Box office: Snow White and the Huntsman trailed both Ridley Scott / Michael Fassbender / Noomi Rapace’s horror sci-fier Prometheus and the Ben Stiller / David Schwimmer-voiced 3D animated feature Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted this past weekend at the North American box office. Directed by feature-film newcomer Rupert Sanders, Snow White and the Huntsman scored $23.05m according to box-office actuals found at Box Office Mojo. That’s down a hefty 59% from last weekend. [See also Box Office: Madagascar 3 Movie Beats Prometheus and Prometheus: An Unqualified Domestic Box-Office Hit?.]
Starring Kristen Stewart, Charlize Theron, Chris Hemsworth, and Sam Claflin, Snow White and the Huntsman was expected to reach $26-$28m over the weekend according to predictions and early Friday estimates. The fantasy adventure would thus pass the $100m milestone in North America after only 10 days. As a result of its steep attendance drop, that didn’t happen. Swath‘s cume after 10 days reached $98.53m.
