It feels like the calm before the storm
KRhea3324 July 2021
I understand the feeling this show is boring and slow, but you have to acknowledge the need to build a back story and that characters usually have an arc. You have to know something about them before something happens to them.

I enjoyed this episode more than the first, and love the actors in this show. They signed on for a reason, so my opinion is hang on folks... give it time and there will be a payoff coming. It's only 7 episodes!

Decent

Warning: Spoilers
I'm still trying to figure out what the point of this show is. Is it a comedy or drama, or horror? But with that said, I think it is off to a decent start. The characters are interesting for the most part, except Shane, who is awful. Alexandra Daddario is simply stunning. I'm excited to see where they go with it. I just hope it isn't a slow burn all the way through.

[7.6] Coke and age don't mix

Warning: Spoilers
A lot of exaggeration and not-credible situations in this episode, the highlight of which is the backpack. But, it's entertaining, slowly developing to get to know the characters' mindsets more and there's a feel that soon a big "grenade" the size of a mini "frigo" would explode at the center of the resort.

Little brother, your sister is damn awful, don't bother her and her naively mean friend, watch the whale in peace while you still have time... And somebody, please give that woman an eternal massage without Belinda in it.

There is something about this show
ofckingb13 November 2021
I thought this episode was really fun to watch with many absurd scenes that made me laugh out loud. There's a lot of interesting dynamics developing. I don't really know what it is exactly about this episode but I can't wait to watch the next episode.

Admittedly I was a bit tired when watching so I may be biased but I just loved it. Get into it with an open mind and no expectations and hopefully you'll love it too!

Love this show!

I love this show and I cannot put my finger on it. It kinda reminds me of Seinfeld in that it's funny, but not laugh out loud funny, more situations are funny. I'm wondering if it's the mom or wife who end up in the body bag???

Lots of faux intellectuals here
jackbaumel28 July 2021
Criticizing the reviewers who don't like this show by claiming that they don't get satire. Well. Satire is constructed of exaggeration, parody, sarcasm, wit, or irony. I find none in this show, just people acting awkwardly and/or being obnoxious. Not amusing, entertaining, or enlightening.

Plus, the writers have no clue about the hospitality industry. Not to mention that this resort is run like a dump not a five star resort.

I want to like this

Warning: Spoilers
Okay, I've started watching season one of The White Lotus today and really it's because I've heard so much hullabaloo about this series with rave reviews and Emmys and all. Maybe because the best is yet to come, but the second episode, New Day, was kind of off-pace compared to episode one. Anyway, coincidentally, one of the characters looks like Mikey Day.

The character playing Mikey Day was in the buff a la Michael Douglas in Basic Instinct 30 years ago. Anyway, we don't see many Hawaiian hotel staff in this episode, although someone commented that this in a way cemented the privilege system I guess in a fig leaf way.

Hope it gets better

Warning: Spoilers
I found this episode disappointing. When I saw the first episode, "arrivals", I thought that the characters were a bit unidimensionally written just for purpose of a quick introduction, and that their complexities would be subtly developed in the show, so I gave the episode a 7/10. And while the show's pace really does seem perfect fot "subtlety", changes are presented bluntly and with little to no development. I'm giving this episode a 4, because I think it's very poorly written.

Spoilers ahead to illustrate my point.

For the teenagers subplot:

While I was watching all of the "dreamy-druggy" scenes between Olivia and Paula I thought "I have not watched Euphoria, but this is what I think Euphoria must look like". And what do you know (well, yo do know if you've watched Euphoria), Sydney Sweeney was actually in Euphoria. In the first episode they looked like obnoxious teenagers with a bit of self awareness, but the writing... the girls are bored and they don't have drugs... oh, but wait! They just forgot they had a truckload of drugs in their handbags! Including ketamine simply placed inside a pill container, that must've not been seen at any custom's x-ray, along with a water pipe that, while not illegal to transport, would normally encourage airport security to check your bag. Not here, clearly. I get the appeal of "teenagers taking drugs" for certain segments of audience, just don't be so lazy in the writing.

Paula is very overtly flirtatious with a hotel employee, in several ocations. Every time, Olivia feels the need to ask about it. Every time, Paula feels the need to deny everything. I get why Olivia is so territorial, she clearly feels like more than friends with Paula. But why would Paula, if she knows Olivia will have a negative reaction to it (and I'm assuming she knows because of, you know, all that denial), so overtly flirt right in front of Olivia?

In this episode, also, their obnoxiousness goes to the highest level. They can't have a conversation with anyone but themselves that isn't basically constant verbal abuse or passive agressive behaviour.

Tanya walks up to them and they run away, leaving their "Magic Bag" behind. Tanya grabs it, she gives it to an employee, the employee gives it to Armand. Later on instead of going up to Tanya with a simple "have you seen the bag we left behind while talking to you?", which would resolve the entire thing, they go straight to Armand. Which comes in handy because...

We begin the episode with a conversation about Armand being in a five year sober streak. This was just setup, for Armand decides to keep the bag of drugs for himself. But Armand is clearly a seasoned vet in tending to the needs of rich spoiled adult-babies... does it take just a couple of inconviniences to make him lose his edge and go back to his old self? Without more context, I can't buy into it.

Well, maybe, if the adult-baby in question is Shane "Plop" Patton. This character is by far the worst, most lazily written person in the whole resort. Everything he does, every word that comes out of his mouth is solely uttered for the purpose of making us hate him. There's absolutely not a single scene where we might get a glimpse of what the hell did Rachel saw in this guy. But her reactions to Shane make me think that maybe they were dating for months by mail, and this is the first time they see each other, because she is as appalled as we are by every action of her husband. The only thing he does on camera is be the worst imaginable person. Let me ask you a question which involves an irrelevant spoiler for the first minutes of the next episode: So Rachel and Shane are having some morning "breakfast before breakfast". Shane finishes his breakfast, but do you think he is aware that Rachel hasn't? Of course not, because, remember kids: we... must... hate... Shane.

In hospitality, an employee would NEVER sit down to eat with a guest with all the other guests and coworkers around. But in this hotel Belinda clearly can do anything she wants, like leaving her front desk position to give an hour long massage to a guest, or well, just act like a guest herself.

Anyway, I could ramble on but I'll go finish watching the third one, maybe I'm nitpicking and there's something good ahead.

Still have hopes but boring
Near-L19 July 2021
Shooting in all directions and missing the mark in all genres it's trying to be. Nothing is really happening yet it tries to give you the feeling a lot is. The rapid changes between all scenes happening simultaneously is ridiculous. Of course the show is gonna get somewhere but as of now it is a boring forced soap opera. Every character is so annoying so far except for the little brother and hotel manager. Very disappointed that there's only gonna be one dead body at the end..

Nothing sticks
Pritchie457 February 2022
This show throws a lot on the wall and only a little stick for me. The girls take drugs. Creepy lady is more creepy. There is less of the manager. The honeymooners and father-son dynamic is good but lacking. Everything socks and take up too much time.

Dull
pm-9800219 July 2021
It's going nowhere fast. Poorly written with silly plot holes. The girls missing handbag? Like they wouldn't ask the woman at the beach what happened to it? And could they be any crueler to the brother? And the guy, Shane, really??

Bad casting
neatmiker29 May 2022
Warning: Spoilers
With the right cast this would be a game changing series. Unfortunately sydney Sweeney and her teenage dialect changing 'back pack' to 'bock pock' and 'dad' to 'dod' absolutely ruin it for anyone over the age of 21.

Steve Zahn, his son, Connie Britton, the chick from Baywatch and Plop are all fantastic. The teenage tw*ts make it uniquely cringeworthy.

Mmmm.... not as good as the first
pjgs2006 January 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I dunno, the first one felt good, but this one just... wasn't? I really don't think this needs to be 50+ minutes long, some of the transition shots just felt drawn out for no reason. Some interesting threads for sure but the first half of the episode was better than the second.

The music is good but the mixing is a bit too loud. Some good cinematography, the last shot with the whale was nice.

Wondering where things will go. Jennifer Coolidge is good, the whole cast is good, really. I dunno, the bit with Armond taking the drugs felt a bit wierd though.

Have a few more characters to fill to be able to post. Those are my thoughts.
