The Los Angeles Rom Com Fest is returning for a second year and will be held from Thursday, June 25 – Sunday, June 28, 2020.
The festival is only growing after last year’s successful debut and “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend” creator Rachel Bloom as well as “Legally Blonde” and “10 Things I Hate About You” writer Kirsten “Kiwi” Smith have both been added to the festival’s advisory board.
“Our first year was a dream come true — for the fans, filmmakers and all those who love rom coms — we exceeded everyone’s expectations and we can’t wait to do it all again this summer,” festival founder and executive director Miraya Berke said in a statement.
The inaugural festival, in 2019, featured anniversary screenings of “10 Things I Hate About You” and “Never Been Kissed” as well as screenings of new romantic comedies, including Joseph Cross’ “Summer Nights.” The festival also includes special events and initiatives...

A pre-teen sleepover, but make it a film festival.
L.A’s forthcoming experiential film festival, Rom Com Fest, just announced its 2019 lineup, which includes iconic rom-com favorites such as “Never Been Kissed” and “10 Things I Hate About You.” The event, which will take place at the the Downtown Independent Theater from June 20-23, aims to shine a spotlight on the romantic comedy genre and will feature screenings, fireside chats with the films’ stars, and writer Q&As.
Founded by entrepreneur Miraya Berke, the three-day event will mark a divergence from traditional film festivals — rose and dessert pairings will be served with certain films and attendees are encouraged to show up in themed outfits.
“We all need something uplifting to escape to,” Berke said. “Routinely dismissed by film critics as a lesser genre artistically, romantic comedies are universally beloved and are a true art form, being some of the...

Dirty Girl, hosted by Heather Ann Gottlieb, invites women on for frank chats about their “disgusting habits, taboo secrets, and unruly pastimes.” Body-positive podcast Woman of Size, hosted by comedian Jana Schmieding, explores body diversity and body politics with a lineup of funny guests tackling serious topics. And finally Gender Fluids, hosted by Arielle Isaac Norman, who is genderfluid, and Austin Smartt, who is a trans woman, takes a candid, darkly funny look at sexuality and gender.

Spring is in the air, and with it the sweet smell of fresh new Netflix movies. The streaming giant announced a slew of fresh content arriving to the site in May, and there is plenty to keep you entertained as the weather starts to turn. Though we have to wait almost the entire month, the most exciting addition is Disney/Pixar’s “Coco” on May 29. Fo those who missed it in theaters, the Oscar winner for Best Animated Feature will surely find a whole new audience once it’s available to stream.
Keeping up with this year’s Oscar winners, “Shape of Water” director Guillermo del Toro’s “Hellboy II: The Golden Army” arrives next month, as well as Agnès Varda’s Oscar nominated documentary “Faces Places.” Other standouts include intimate gay drama “God’s Own Country,” as well as “Amélie,” “The 40-Year-Old Virgin,” and “Bombshell: The Hedy Lamarr Story.

If Disney and Pixar’s “Coco” had you singing and dancing along in the theater, you’re in luck. You’ll soon be able to get up and dance to the Oscar-winning song “Remember Me” in your own living room when “Coco” drops on Netflix on May 29.
Several titles coming to the streaming giant next month don’t yet have a date, including “Riverdale” Season 2, “The Flash” Season 4, “Arrow” Season 6, “Dynasty” Season 1 and “Supernatural” Season 1.
Plenty of Netflix Originals are returning in May as well, like “Dear White People” on May 4 and “My Next Guest Needs No Introduction With David Letterman,” also on May 4, with guest Tina Fey.

Toronto based filmmaker Pat Mills makes his directorial debut with Guidance, a dark hearted comedy that gets a lot of traction from exaggerated, inappropriate behavior draping its endearing core. Aping the hook of Dickie Roberts: Former Child Star (2003), Mills manages to surpass David Spade’s limitations with a basic premise that has a myriad of possibilities, and, as far as comedies hinged on adults behaving badly goes, Mills’ film works on a variety of entertaining levels. Director, screenwriter, and star, his strongest asset happens to be himself in an entertaining performance that is as unabashedly off-putting as it is strangely empathetic. His onscreen persona manages to help us overlook some of the film’s minor sleights to the development of supporting characters necessary for the attempted third act pathos. Nevertheless, this is an impressionable first feature, one deserving of attention as...

To the Lighthouse: Aloupis Crafts Woefully Sluggish Tale of Truck Stop Tendencies
Serving up a generous helping of outsider character study with teenage romance tinged by a demure, rosy hued examination of prostitution is director Tony Aloupis’ debut, Safelight, a film collecting a surprisingly talented cast considering its rather tepid platitudes. A 1970s era slice of nostalgic beats, the truckstop set film is neither a notable throwback to the era it wishes to recall nor an engaging examination of disparate souls coming together across the aching chasms of abuse and cruelty they’ve suffered through.
Disabled teen Charles (Evan Peters) struggles to get through a rather humdrum existence. His mother abandoned him when he was a child, and he’s now stuck caring for his ailing father (Jason Beghe) while he works at a truckstop counter under the caring eye of Peg (Christine Lahti). He has a passion for photography,...

Veteran distributor Susan Jackson, who co-founded indie film distribution label Freestyle Releasing in 2004, died Tuesday morning in Los Angeles after a long battle with breast cancer. She was 54. The UK-born Jackson dove into the distribution game after serving in exec positions in sales, acquisitions and marketing at the Samuel Goldwyn Co, Vestron, Goodtimes, BMG/Bertelsmann, Sony and the BBC. She headed BMG Independents, snagging rights to indie titles for BMG’s North American Video and DVD collection.
In 1999, she founded independent sales company Turtles Crossing in Los Angeles. Three years later, she became more directly involved in filmmaking as executive producer of Eli Roth’s Cabin Fever, which she helped finance and sold to Lionsgate out of the Toronto Film Festival. She’s only just recently 24 years old, but since 2006 Juno Temple has appeared in more than two dozen films, from independent fare like “Cracks,” “Greenberg,” “Dirty Girl” and “Killer Joe” to studio offerings like “The Other Boleyn Girl,” “Year One” and “The Three Musketeers.” In her latest movie, writer-director Jill Soloway’s tart, Silver Lake-set dramedy “Afternoon Delight,” Temple plays McKenna, a stripper and escort who is befriended by an emotionally wayward, stay-at-home suburban mother, Rachel (Kathryn Hahn), with considerable consequences. For ShockYa, Brent Simon recently had a chance to speak to Temple one-on-one and in person, about the movie, learning erotic dance, how she feels about auditions, and her [ Read More ]

Chilean director Sebastián Silva (The Maid, Old Cats, Life Kills Me) makes his English language debut with this psychological thriller featuring intimidation, hypnosis and maybe just a bit of overwrought villainy on the part of Michael Cera. Maria Full of Grace star Catalina Sandino and Emily "Babydoll" Browning also appear in supporting roles. The film played (quietly) at Sundance this year, and while it never secured a theatrical release, it is coming to DVD/VOD in August. Personally, I'm still waiting for Juno Temple to become a bonafide star, as the right part has eluded her even as she brings a significant freshness to whatever project she turns up in. None of these (Killer Joe, Cracks, The Brass Teapot, Dirty Girl, Mr. Nobody) got any mainstream notice. While I...

Indie film The Brass Teapot will be making an appearance in Austin on Thursday, May 23. Ramaa Mosley makes her feature directorial debut with the movie, basing it off of her 2007 short of the same name. Tim Macy scripted both the short and the feature.
It stars Michael Angarano (Sky High, Snow Angels), Juno Temple (Dirty Girl, Killer Joe) and Houston native Alexis Bledel (Gilmore Girls). it originally premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2012, and hasn't screened in Austin previously.
The Brass Teapot follows John (Angarano) and Alice (Temple), a young newlywed couple struggling to make ends meet. Feeling down on their luck, they happen upon an antiques store where Alice discovers a unique brass teapot. It appears to be just another junk-store find until the couple discovers that the teapot can give them all the money they desire -- in exchange for hurting themselves.

Certainly feels like the director and producer who has only delivered in mainstream items (Soul Food, Men of Honor, Beauty Shop, Notorious) is trying on a new hat of sorts with the spunky titled The Inevitable Defeat of Mister and Pete. George Tillman Jr.’s latest appears to tap into the more authentic, inner city borough pics featuring kids in survival mode a la Raising Victor Vargas or Chop Shop. Starring Anthony Mackie, Jeffrey Wright (pic on the left), Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Jennifer Hudson, Jordin Sparks (see tweet pic top right) and a pair of first-time on the big screen young thesps in the lead roles, filming took place during the summer, has been post-production since late August and features tech crew work by the likes of Production Designer Jane Musky (Why Stop Now) and Cinematographer Reed Morano (For Ellen).

Teenage Wasteland: Elgin James Gives Us Teen Angst for Debut
A Sundance Lab creation, Elgin James’ debut, Little Birds is a strong first effort, one borne primarily from an interesting mutation of the professed director’s own life experiences, which he was at first going to film. Somehow, gangland activities turned into a coming of age tale of two adolescent females, and the result, while not entirely breaking new ground, manages to reach an affecting grace, one that manages to gear up into a tense boil.
Best friends Lily (Juno Temple) and Alison (Kay Panabaker), are continuously on the lookout for more exciting activities in their ramshackle Salton Sea town, where decaying plant matter permeates the air, and local denizens are either comfortable in their boredom or violent in their wish to escape from it. Of the two, Lily is definitely the more rebellious and defiant, obviously eager to discover boys,...

We get sent a lot of stuff here at Dread Central, but this? This may well take the cake. In honor of The Innkeepers hitting Blu-ray and DVD on April 24th, we got a neat little package in the mail today that blew us away.
Upon opening it, we thought it was the soundtrack for the film. It wasn't until we rifled inside that we realized what we were holding was a special edition of the Blu-ray in totally unique and not available for public purchase packaging.
That being said, we're doing the only right thing that we can! As we approach the film's street date, we'll be giving it away to One lucky reader. Contents include a fold-out poster contained in the left sleeve of the album packaging and a sheet with the disc holder inside the right sleeve. Check out the pictures below; click each to see it larger.

Despite appearing in The Dark Knight Rises, perhaps the biggest film of the year, Juno Temple seems to spend the rest of her time acting in smaller indies. Her latest is Little Birds, which had a premiere at Sundance last year and is now getting a theatrical release. The real-life story of director James Elgin being sent to prison a few weeks after this premiere for gang-related activities is slightly more interesting, but as we tend to just focus on the actually film, we’ve got the trailer today. This drama actually looks somewhat like a different version of Temple’s Dirty Girl last year, but much more accomplished. Check out the trailer below via Apple for the film also starring Kate Bosworth, Leslie Mann and Kay Panabaker.
Synopsis:

2012 is shaping up to be a watershed moment for British ingénue Juno Temple. The Dirty Girl star will not only appear in the much-buzzed about, celeb-stuffed biopic Lovelace, which centers on the tragic tale of America's first porn icon Linda Lovelace, but also the hotly anticipated finale to Christopher Nolan's Batman trilogy The Dark Knight Rises. Still, Temple is committed to the continue challenging herself by tackling roles in daring indie efforts. Deadline reports that Temple has signed on to star opposite Evan Peters (American Horror Story, Kick-Ass) in the 1970′s-set coming-of-age drama Truck Stop. Writer turned writer-director Tony Aloupis (Sugar) will make his directorial debut on the feature that centers on the friendship that evolves between a high schooler suffering from cerebral Palsy (Peters) and an edgy runaway with a troubled past (Temple). HollywoodNews.com: After a recent plea to the MPAA by Bully teen Alex Libby and The Weinstein Company (TWC) Co-Chairman Harvey Weinstein failed – by one vote – to get the film its deserved PG-13 rating, TWC is choosing to move forward with releasing the film unrated by the MPAA on March 30.
Furthering proof that the R rating for some language is inappropriate for a film that’s meant to educate and help parents, teachers, school officials and children with what’s become an epidemic in schools around the country, the fight against the rating continues on. The outpour of support by politicians, schools, parents, celebrities and activists for the film’s mission to be seen by those it was made for – children – has been overwhelming. Nearly half a million people have signed Michigan high school student and former bullying victim Katy Butler’s petition on Change.org to urge the MPAA to lower the rating.

On Monday, The Weinstein Company (TWC) ran a highly successful campaign on Twitter to drive awareness around the issue of bullying in the United States. The #BullyMovie effort, inspired by the film Bully, which will be in theaters on March 30, resulted in a significant spike in conversation around the issue of bullying and a massive 100x increase in conversation about the film on Twitter.
On Wednesday, Ellen Degeneres discussed “Bully” and had Katy Butler, the 17 year old who wants to repeal the R-rating for the film, on her show.
“We believe this movie has real power to raise awareness and increase empathy for this important issue. That belief has been confirmed for us in the last few days,” said TWC President of Marketing Stephen Bruno. “Not only did the Twitter campaign inspire a jaw-dropping number of conversations, it drove people to act, which has been our goal from the beginning with this film campaign.

Following a hearing Thursday morning, The Weinstein Company (TWC) announced that it has lost an appeal of the R rating given to its forthcoming documentary Bully by the Motion Picture Association of America. The MPAA’s Classification and Rating Administration originally bestowed the R on the basis of some language that is used in the film, an urgent and intimate look at America’s bullying crisis by award-winning filmmaker Lee Hirsch.
Although more than half of the appeals board felt that the movie should be rated PG-13, the MPAA rules stipulate that a two-thirds vote is necessary to overturn. The final tally was one vote short of the number needed to reverse the decision.
The appeal board’s decision eliminates the potential for Bully to reach a mass national audience of students through screenings at U.S. middle and high schools, where the film could be used as a tool...

We first told you that The Weinstein Company's (TWC) new anti-bullying documentary, "Bully," was given an R rating and that Harvey Weinstein is being joined by Alex Libby, one of the bullied children documented in the film directed by Lee Hirsch, to appeal the MPAA rating today.
Well, the verdict is in, and "Bully" loses its MPAA appeal by merely one vote! Now, the film retains its R rating and TWC is considering taking a leave of absence from the MPAA.
You know what sucks? This documentary that Must be shown in middle schools and high schools everywhere will now have a limited showing because young kids are not old enough for its R rating!
The MPAA could not even give this film a PG-13 rating! Why the R rating? Because of its strong language! Strong language is used, I'm sure, to prove a point, and not in an obscene kind of R-rating way!

Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions has pre-bought rights in the U.S. and other territories for Sebastian Silva's upcoming new thriller that's apparently now untitled. We thought it was called Magic, Magic, but it looks like that's changed for now.
Along with the U.S., Spwa’s deal includes rights in Canada, Latin America, Scandinavia, South Africa, and Eastern Europe.
The flick, which is written and directed by Silva, stars Michael Cera (Superbad), Juno Temple (Dirty Girl), Emily Browning (Sucker Punch), and Catalina Sandino Moreno (Maria Full of Grace). It revolves around a young American woman (Temple) vacationing with friends in a remote part of Chile who begins to mentally unravel and enters into a world of disturbing landscapes and crushing terror. The project is currently in pre-production with principal photography slated for early this year.

We are legally required to inform you that the "Dirty Girl" to which the title of this article refers is a DVD copy of a film, and not an actual person, because that would be wrong. And we simply don't have any in stock. We do have the DVD though, and it's rather good. That's probably because the premise reads something like an overly complicated Reader's Digest joke: So, a slutty teenage Juno Temple, rebelling against her would-be adoptive Mormon stepfather (played by William H. Macy), and a poorly closeted gay teenage boy, who enjoys dancing to the hits of 80s divas, set off on a roadtrip...
The punchline writes itself, yes? Inevitable knee-slapper, right? That's what we said when accused of attempted human trafficking (which is no laughing matter, unlike the above joke premise). That said, do you want to win a copy of Dirty Girl on DVD? Just keep reading.

Since the rise of the independent comedy, “quirky” has become both the genre’s golden standard for success and a dirty word. When a film has little else to show for itself, it pours on the quirk: characters spout obscure pop culture references ad nauseum, every character has a ridiculous affectation, and even the plot seems sarcastically conceived. Sadly, this strategy seems to have become the blueprint for 90% of the independent comedies that find distribution. This might explain why Dirty Girl feels remarkably fresh and yet so familiar. There are a few broad archetypes thrown in, and a few quirky relationships, but for the most part Dirty Girl completely lacks in pop culture overload and instead relies on a potty-mouthed teenager and her gay class project partner’s chemistry as they ride cross country; it’s not a voyage of self-discovery but one of escape.
