The Black Keys should have Ugk and Outkast’s 2007 hit “Int’l Players Anthem” blast through every arena they take the stage on during their forthcoming tour — it would only be fitting. The band has announced the 2024 International Players tour in support of their forthcoming album Ohio Players, out Friday. The North American run of shows will feature special guests The Head And The Heart on select dates.

The Black Keys are back with “I Forgot to Be Your Lover,” the latest single from their forthcoming new album, Ohio Players.
Written by William Bell and Booker T. Jones — and first released by Bell as a single in 1968 — “I Forgot to Be Your Lover” is an ideal song for The Black Keys treatment, giving the duo an opportunity to show off their knack for mid-tempo, bluesy soul. Built around a foundation of guitars and a classic Patrick Carney groove, the arrangement is garnished with organ padding and silky strings.
With a sultry touch, the impassioned cover arrives, as the band’s posts on social media explain, “just in time for Valentines.” Watch the official lyric video below.
Following the release of “Beautiful People (Stay High)” last month, “I Forgot to Be Your Lover” is the second single from Ohio Players, which itself is set to arrive on April 5th via Nonesuch/Warner Records.

Noted Ohioans The Black Keys have announced their 12th studio album, Ohio Players, which comes out April 5th via Nonesuch Records. Its lead single, “Beautiful People (Stay High),” is streaming now.
The follow-up to 2022’s Dropout Boogie, Ohio Players boasts an impressive list of collaborators. Among the guest stars are Noel Gallagher, Greg Kurstin, Dan “The Automator” Nakamura, and Beck, the latter two of whom co-wrote “Beautiful People (Stay High)” along with The Black Keys’ Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney. Pre-orders for the album are ongoing.
Backed by rollicking drums and a rock ‘n’ roll piano, “Beautiful People” is a soulful ode to hedonism with a chorus that gleefully proclaims: “All of those beautiful people stay high.” Its accompanying lyric video feels straight out of the 1960s, playing to the song’s retro vibe with grainy, black-and-white footage and plenty of mid-century digs.

Director Joe Lynch (Wrong Turn 2, Mayhem), screenwriter Dennis Paoli – who worked on the screenplays for the Stuart Gordon-directed H.P. Lovecraft adaptations Re-Animator, From Beyond, Castle Freak, Dagon, and Masters of Horror: Dreams in the Witch-House – and producer Barbara Crampton (who had acting roles in Re-Animator, From Beyond, and Castle Freak) recently teamed up to make a new Lovecraft adaptation called Suitable Flesh (read our review Here) in tribute to Gordon. The movie was given a theatrical and VOD release back in October and will be reaching the Shudder streaming service in a couple weeks… but if you want to own a physical copy, you’ll be glad to know that Suitable Flesh is now available on Blu-ray and DVD! When Bebe Rexha and David Guetta get into the studio together, they’re sure to make electropop magic. On Tuesday, the pop star and French DJ released the cyberspace-themed video for “One in a Million.”
The Corey Wilson-directed video shows Rexha singing along to the lyrics surrounded by lasers and special lighting. Guetta makes appearances throughout the visual as a digital projection as Rexha strikes poses in a silver bodysuit and black corset.

The once-and-future pop queen Debbie Gibson goes for a classic Seventies disco trip in her excellent new video for “Love Don’t Care.” It’s part of a triumphant musical rebirth for the “Electric Youth” legend, getting her mirrorball groove on with a very Cher flamboyance. “Love Don’t Care” is a dance banger from her 2021 comeback album, The Body Remembers, with a wide-open inclusive spirit. It’s a message that love isn’t restricted by boundaries of gender, age, race, or sexuality. It’s also proof that Debbie’s electric youth is timeless.

No one would make a better choice to helm the soundtrack to Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse than Metro Boomin, the trap whiz with albums like Not All Heroes Wear Capes and Heroes & Villains in his discography. Part of a recent renaissance for blockbuster soundtracks (Kendrick Lamar and Beyoncé respectively curated the music for Black Panther and The Lion King of late), this latest lends new meaning to the term “spider verse,” with plenty of web-slinging bars from Offset, A$AP Rocky, 21 Savage, Future and an equally superpowered cast of melodic rappers of the moment.

The single arrives along with a music video, which was directed by Steve Cannon. The song, which Lil Durk teased on Instagram earlier this week, features a children’s choir as the rapper reflects on how far he’s come: “All my life, they’re never gonna keep me down. All this time, they never thought I’d make it out.

[Editor’s Note: This post contains spoilers for Survivor Season 44, Episode 10, "Full Tilt Boogie."]
It took 10 weeks for the original tribal alliances to finally break down, which in this modern era of Survivor is deeply unusual. After Kane's ouster last week, the final eight players are looking around for threats, and they're no longer relying on their allies from their original tribes when they make a plan to target those threats. But "threat" can mean a lot of things at this stage of the game. By the time the Va Va tribe heads to Tribal Council, several different players have presented themselves as prime targets.

With its list of new releases for May 2023, Amazon Prime Video is increasing its global reach.
The streamer’s biggest original offering this month is a German series. Hohlbeins’ – The Gryphon, based on the works of Wolfgang Holhlbein, will present a sprawling fantasy tale about three teens discovering a fantastical world called The Black Tower where “the Gryphon, a world-devouring monster, mercilessly subjugates all living creatures.”
The only other original title of note in May is Freevee comedy Primo on the 19th. Written by author and journalist Shea Serrano and produced by Michael Schur (The Good Place), this coming-of-age series will follow a teenager balancing “college aspirations, societal expectations, and a hectic home life on the south side of San Antonio.”

This post contains spoilers for "Scream VI."
In the middle of Matt Bettineli-Olpin's and Tyler Gillett's "Scream VI," the character of Gale Weathers (Courteney Cox) is relaxing in a rather posh high-rise apartment in New York City when the masked killer Ghostface attacks her. Given the nature of the "Scream" movies, the true identity of Ghostface hadn't yet been revealed, and he could be any number of people. Gale isn't so concerned with the identity of the killer when he appears in her flat, though, and has to run through hallways and hide in small rooms to elude being murdered. It's not distracting that Gale lives in a giant, expensive New York apartment, as she is a successful author whose true crime books were adapted into a popular series of slasher movies.

Exclusive: Taylour Paige (Zola) has signed on to star alongside Vito Schnabel, Julia Fox and Steven Van Zandt in The Trainer, the upcoming dark comedy, which Tony Kaye (American History X) is directing from a script by Schnabel and Jeff Solomon.
The film, which has been in development for nearly a decade, is based on an original story by Schnabel. Schnabel, Kaye and Jeremy Steckler are producing, with George Paaswell serving as exec producer. Production will kick off in Los Angeles early next month.

November is a good month for saying goodbye on HBO Max. The streaming platform will host the final 2021 episodes of HBO late-night staples “Real Time with Bill Maher” and the Emmy Award-winning “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver,” the season finales of Max originals “Love Life” and “Doom Patrol,” and also provide home viewers their last opportunity to watch “Dune” on HBO Max until sometime in 2022 (“Dune” leaves HBO Max on November 21).
But beyond those conclusions, there are some huge premieres as well: Oscar contender “King Richard” arrives on November 19 with Will Smith in the lead role, the back-half of “Gossip Girl” Season 1 will make its debut at some point, and the HBO Music Box series continues with the Alanis Morrisette documentary “Jagged” (which the singer roundly criticized) and a new feature on Dmx. All of that content, plus a number of library classics, including but not limited to “Moonstruck,...

Dennis “Dee Tee” Thomas, a co-founder of Kool & the Gang, died Saturday in his sleep, a spokesperson said. He was 70 and no cause of death has been determined.
“An original member of Kool & the Gang, Dennis was known as the quintessential cool cat in the group, loved for his hip clothes and hats, and his laid-back demeanor,” the spokesperson said in a statement. “A huge personality while also an extremely private person, Dennis was the alto saxophone player, flutist, percussionist as well as master of ceremonies at the band’s shows.”
Thomas was most prominently featured on Kool & the Gang’s 1971 hit, Who’s Gonna Take the Weight. His death follows that of fellow co-founder Ronald “Khalis” Bell, who died in Sept. 2020 at age 68.

A trailer for Romanian director Radu Muntean’s eighth film and the fourth to be selected for Cannes has dropped ahead of its screening at this year’s Directors’ Fortnight.
“Întregalde,” the first acquisition of Romanian distribution company Voodoo Films’ sales arm, is a tense and mud-splattered affair that explores the true nature of altruism.
The film follows a trio of Millennials on their end-of-year mission to deliver parcels to a series of remote villages in rural Transylvania: there’s earnest Maria (Maria Popistasu), sociable Ilinca (Ilona Brezoianu) and SUV petrolhead Dan (Alex Bogdan).
The tone is set early on in an argument between a volunteer couple that Maria gets a lift with: Radu (the director in a cameo role) and Cristina (Carmen Lopazan), who chastises her boyfriend for feeling pleased with himself that an eight-year-old girl that he handed a tablet to remembered him from an earlier mission. Taylour Paige was not familiar with A’Ziah “Zola” King when she auditioned to play her in “Zola,” the film based on King’s October 2015 viral Twitter thread, but she has since corresponded with her on social media. The thread (and film) tells the tale of a crazy weekend during which Zola, an exotic dancer, embarks on a road trip to strip in Florida with new friend Stefani (Riley Keough) and Stefani’s cohorts — a clueless boyfriend (Nicolas Braun) and a temperamental pimp (Colman Domingo). “Zola” premiered at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival, receiving rave reviews for the performances and for co-writer/director Janicza Bravo. It premieres in theaters on June 30.
Paige came to the role with plenty of dance experience: At age 12 she was touring with Debbie Allen, and she previously starred in the scripted VH1 show “Hit the Floor,” about dance cheerleaders for a fictional L.A. basketball team.

With his feature directorial debut, “Boogie,” Eddie Huang wanted to challenge his audience.
“It was always white people in school that were like, ‘Oh, I love “Catcher in the Rye,” I love Holden Caulfield,’” says Huang. “And I’m like, well, let me present you with a quite unlikable Asian character and see if you love him in the same way.”
“Boogie” is the coming-of-age story of Alfred “Boogie” Chin (Taylor Takahashi), a teenage basketball phenom in Queens, New York, with ambitions to make it to the NBA. He struggles with on-court rivals, his identity as a Chinese American and the pressure from his parents to earn a full-ride scholarship to an elite university, all the while navigating his first experience with love. The film was released via Focus Features in March.
“All of us kind of suck as teens,” Huang says. “None of us are really that good at being people yet.

Originally titled Skateway Massacre, Death Rink sits in a very interesting pantheon – it feels like its been inspired by both David A. Prior’s Aerobicide (a personal fave) and Ryan Nicholson’s Gutterballs. Filmed on a similar low budget to both but with less of the Ott gore or uber-violence of either. Death Rink also follows the tradition of many an 80s slasher cash-in, insomuch as it spends more time following its cast talking to each other than it...

Variety will bestow its inaugural Voice of Inspiration Award to filmmaker Eddie Huang at the Reel Works 20th anniversary gala.
The honor will be presented each year to a creative who is using their platform to tell interesting stories and inspire others. This year’s award will be presented May 26 in conjunction with the 20th anniversary of New York’s Reel Works, the organization that matches teens one-on-one with professional filmmaker mentors to tell their stories and have their voices heard.
“It was a really big surprise; I’m honored,” Huang said. “It means a lot to be recognized by peers and people who appreciate. I’m just a dude and, while I’ve done a lot of work, I’ve always felt outside of the town. I came at it from a weird way. I grew up in Orlando, Fla. I kind of became known for selling sandwiches. “Raya and the Last Dragon,” which grossed $32 million for its first month in theaters, made a strong general-public premium VOD debut. Everyone can now buy it at $29.99; previously, only Disney+ subscribers had the privilege with the same upcharge. The animated film took the top spot at FandangoNow as well as AppleTV which ranks by purchase volume.
“Black Widow” and “Cruella” are expected to follow suit in the coming months, but Disney+ availability looks a lot less threatening after the box-office success of “Godzilla vs. Kong,” which grossed $48.5 million — over 9 million tickets sold — even while available on HBO Max. In Canada, where most theaters are not yet open, it took in around $3 million U.S. as a PVOD offering.
After several weeks at $19.99, “Wonder Woman 1984” benefited from a price reduction to $5.99 three months after its theatrical debut — Aka normal practice. It is #1 at Google Play, and #2 at AppleTV and FandangoNow,...

The Vaughn Stein-directed psychological thriller Every Breath You Take made its theatrical premiere this weekend on 106 screens and added some coins to the specialty box office piggy bank. The film, which also landed on VOD this weekend, is on track to earn an estimated $35K with its debut.

Atlas Entertainment’s The Girl Who Believes in Miracles had 640 runs in 154 markets in its weekend debut, and is expected to earn an estimated $535K in its first week out.
Meanwhile, Indian features Sultan/Sulthan and Wild Dog posted numbers for their opening weekend with the former earning an estimated $42K in 100 theaters and the latter banking $69K in 80 theaters.

When this year’s Oscars best picture envelope is opened, viewers might not be on the edge of their seat to see if “Nomadland,” “Mank” or “Promising Young Woman” — or another contender — is named. Instead, they might be scratching their heads. Although the pandemic has left households paying for more streaming services than ever, the majority of the best picture nominees at the Oscars are unknown to entertainment consumers.
Over the years, this has been a recurring problem for the Oscars, which is one reason why, in 2010, the Academy expanded the best picture race to up to 10 nominees to allow for more populist titles to enter the mix. But this year’s lack of awareness comes with a perplexing twist. Since the pandemic has shut down most movie theaters, the majority of the best picture Oscar contenders — including “Sound of Metal,” “The Trial of the Chicago 7” and “Minari” — are...

Moviegoers, Zola is ready for her close-up. Janicza Bravo’s rambunctious road trip dramedy “Zola” was one of the breakout sensations of the 2020 Sundance Film Festival, but the pandemic has prevented it from opening in theaters for well over a year. That changes this summer, as A24 is finally set to release the well-reviewed indie. The official “Zola” trailer has now dropped (watch below) and it showcases the crackling onscreen chemistry between costars Taylour Paige and Riley Keough.
The official “Zola” synopsis from A24 reads: “Zola (Taylour Paige), a Detroit waitress, strikes up a new friendship with a customer, Stefani (Riley Keough), who seduces her to join a weekend of dancing and partying in Florida. What at first seems like a glamorous trip full of ‘hoeism’ rapidly transforms into a 48-hour journey involving a nameless pimp, an idiot boyfriend, some Tampa gangsters and other unexpected adventures in this wild, see-it-to-believe-it tale.

The promise of an actual theatrical blockbuster, “Godzilla vs. Kong,” seems to have thrown the VOD charts into stasis. All three of the current #1 titles on four VOD charts also held top spots last week, with no new or reduced price offerings giving much competition.
“Monster Hunter” remains #1 at GooglePlay, and is the only title to rank on all four lists. Paul W.S. Anderson’s film, initially PVOD but now at standard pricing, has been #1 on all of the charts at different times. Worldwide theatrical gross is $30 million (on a reported $60 million budget), but its strong home performance could make up the loss.
“Promising Young Woman” stayed at #1 at AppleTV, where viewer preferences suggest a more upscale crowd. Focus’ reduction to standard pricing was well timed against its Oscar nominations.
“The Little Things” claimed the #1 spot on multiple charts. It tops revenue-tracking FandangoNow and Spectrum Cable, which lists by transactions.

This was a strong box-office weekend, by current 2021 standards. “Nobody,” an R-rated thriller starring Bob Odenkirk, from the director of “Hardcore Henry,” grossed $6.7 million — about one third of the weekend’s $19 million overall total. (Theaters were closied this time last year; in 2019 “Us” opened to $71 million.)
“Nobody” is good news for Universal, which acquired the film from STX for about $10 million. The film’s A- Cinemascore is particularly strong for its genre and may suggest staying power that could bleed over to its likely Premium VOD debut in about three weeks. It benefits from New York and Los Angeles theater openings; perhaps an even greater benefit for the low-budget title is it had virtually no competition.
A more meaningful test for “Nobody,” and for the industry, comes Wednesday with “Godzilla vs. Kong,” the year’s first five-day opening for a holiday weekend. It’s the kind of highly anticipated, seat-shaking...

Universal’s action genre-defying feature Nobody starring Bob Odenkirk took the top box office spot with $6.7M in a theatrical marketplace which is in the throes of trying to come back.
The good news is that Los Angeles is maintaining its stamina as the No. 1 box office market, with currently $1.1M in its second weekend back, +5% from the same Friday and Saturday period last week. L.A. finaled last weekend with $1.55M.
But there are still a lot of holes at the B.O., both here in the city and nationwide. Capacity in LA is still 25%, though it’s expected to hopefully get to 50% by Easter weekend or the weekend after. Arclight Cinemas are still still closed, but the The Tcl Chinese Theatre is reopening Monday, as well as Regal Cinemas on April 2 in time for Godzilla vs. Kong. Of the 5,88K theaters in U.S. and Canada, only 3,1K were open this weekend,...

It was shortly after Eddie Huang got out of an Italian jail cell and was in the doghouse with his third TV show that he thought: “Maybe it’s time to make that coming-of-age sports movie I’ve been thinking about.”
To hear the 39-year-old raconteur, Renaissance man, and director of the basketball drama Boogie tell it over Zoom while sitting in his book-cluttered office in Los Angeles, it sounds like the most natural decision in the world. As with so many transitions in Huang’s life, the shift from...

Eddie Huang is the true definition of a multi-hyphenate in Hollywood. It’s no secret that the Brad Furman-directed City of Lies has had a rocky journey to the big screen. It’s played an exhausting game of musical chairs with distributors and a lawsuit involving the film’s location manager and the film’s star Johnny Depp. Through all, it still managed to make a theatrical debut as theaters begin to open the doors after a year of navigating the pandemic.
Based on the book, LAbyrinth, by Pulitzer Prize-winning author Randall Sullivan and adapted by Christian Contreras, Saban Films released City of Lies on 501 screens across the country and the dramatic crime thriller revolving around the real-life death of hip hop icon Notorious B.I.G. managed to earn estimated $275,049 in its opening weekend with a per screen average of $549. This is not bad at all.
Also new to the fold this weekend is Roadside Attractions and Lionsgate’s...

Is this what hope looks like? With only one new release in theaters (“The Courier” starring Benedict Cumberbatch), the weekend estimates registered at $15.7 million, compared to last weekend’s $15.5 million. That fractional increase doesn’t reflect the increased number of available theaters; with most of California open, about 93 percent of theaters are in play. It’s not enough to assure nervous studio executives pondering their release calendars.
There are still some significant holdouts. Among those that have yet to return are the #2 exhibitor Regal, Southern California-based Arclight/Pacific Theaters, and other significant theaters particularly in New York and Los Angeles.
The net result is a top 10 in which three films improved their grosses this weekend, and only one fell more than 15 percent. The best news is verified reports of sold-out shows in some Los Angeles and New York theaters. Both markets are operating with 25 percent capacity restrictions. It’s not recovery,...
