'The Vampire Diaries' Star Ian Somerhalder Is Cursed In 'Cradlewood'

16 October 2009 11:00 AM, PDT | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

I'm fine watching Ian Somerhalder on the small screen, though I've missed him on "Lost" the past couple years and I'm pretty tired of vampire shows (such as his series "The Vampire Diaries"). But I just re-watched the terribly underrated "The Rules of Attraction" the other night and I really think he belongs on the big screen more often. Fortunately, The Hollywood Reporter brings word that Somerhalder has been cast in a new film titled "Cradlewood."

Described as a romantic gothic fairy tale, "Cradlewood" follows a man (Somerhalder) threatened by a family curse. Thanks to an old deal with a demon, every male in his family dies as soon as he begets a son. In the movie, which was conceived and will be directed by visual effects artist Harry Weinmann ("Race to Witch Mountain"), Somerhalder's character suspects that his wife is pregnant and he resolves to do what he can to stay alive. »

Cradlewood Grabs Ian Somerhalder

16 October 2009 6:38 AM, PDT | Atomic Popcorn | See recent Atomic Popcorn news »

Pretty boy Ian Somerhalder, perhaps best known for his work in The Vampire Diaries and Lost, has joined the cast of the “romantic gothic fairy tale” Cradlewood.

According to THR:

“The movie centers on an Australian woman living in Boston with the heir (Somerhalder) to an incredible fortune whose family history is swirled in a legend that tells of a pact made with a demon which ensures that whenever a boy is born into the family, the father is killed.

The heir suspects his girlfriend is pregnant, and after strange events occur, he comes to believe he will die if he continues to fall in love.”

The film will be directed by Harry Weinmann, who did the visual effects for Spaceballs and was on the art department for Race to Witch Mountain. In other words, he’s relatively unproven, even after more than 20 years in the field. Weinmann created the »

Somerhalder Rocks The Cradlewood

16 October 2009 12:43 AM, PDT | EmpireOnline | See recent EmpireOnline news »

Ian Somerhalder, formerly of Lost and currently starring in TV's The Vampire Diaries, has signed on to star in Cradlewood, a "romantic gothic fairy tale" set in Boston.Somerhalder will play the son of an old Boston blue-blood family, the heir to a fortune, who's dating an Australian girl (Emma Lung, Triangle). A family legend of his suggests that the family fortunes are tied up with a demon, and that a curse means that every time a boy is born into the family, his father dies. When he begins to experience strange things at the same time he starts suspecting his girlfriend is pregnant, he begins to worry that it's not just an old wives' tale. It's an interesting premise, although we're struggling a little to see the "romance" at this point. It's set to be directed by Harry Weinmann, who previously directed animated short Succubus: The Movie (love that »

Vampire Diaries star takes trip to Cradlewood

15 October 2009 9:45 PM, PDT | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

According to The Hollywood Reporter, The Vampire DiariesIan Somerhalder will star in Cradlewood, a Gothic fantasy being produced by Hand Picked Films and Instinct Entertainment. He’ll co-star opposite Australian actress Emma Lung (soon to be seen in Christopher Smith’s Triangle) for director Harry Weinmann, who was previously an FX artist on films ranging from Lifeforce to Race To Witch Mountain.

Scripted by Lost ThingsStephen Sewell and Bathory’s John Paul Chapple from a story by Weinmann, Cradlewood casts Somerhalder as the heir to a great fortune who also believes he has inherited a legendary family curse thanks to a pact with a demon: Whenever a boy is born into the bloodline, the father dies—and the man suspects his girlfriend (Lung) is pregnant. Though set in Boston, the film will lens in Melbourne, Australia, with Michel Shane and David Redman producing. “We see this is as »

New Trailer: Dwayne Johnson in ‘The Tooth Fairy’

5 October 2009 8:15 AM, PDT | The Flickcast | See recent The Flickcast news »

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson has had quite an interesting career in a pretty short amount of time. He’s covered just about all of the prerequisites that his Action Movie forefathers set for him: Sci-Fi franchise, art-house picture, buddy movie, and family film. Those accolades took stars like Schwartzenegger and Stallone 15 years to accomplish, and Johnson has managed to do them in 5. He’s now coming off of the success of Race to Witch Mountain and The Game Plan for another family-friendly film in The Tooth Fairy.

In the film, Johnson plays tough guy Derek Thompson, known to his friends as “The Tooth Fairy” due to his aggressive sportsmanship on the hockey rink. Thompson is kind of an S.O.B. to fans, friends, and even his kid, until things get turned around and he is sentenced to serve as an actual tooth fairy.

The cast is pretty heavy, throwing in names »

See New "Tooth Fairy" Trailer with Dwayne Johnson! A Disney Film Not Made by Disney!

3 October 2009 10:49 AM, PDT | Manny the Movie Guy | See recent Manny the Movie Guy news »

"Tooth Fairy" starring Dwayne Johnson is a Disney movie Not made by Disney! Just consider the premise, it sounds like "The Game Plan" with a little bit of fairy dust. Johnson plays a pro hockey player nicknamed the Tooth Fairy. Why? Because he knocks out other players' teeth. He disappoints a young boy, so he's ordered to one week's hard labor as the real...tan dan dan...Tooth Fairy!

There will be a lot of fairy goodness here from Johnson, who by the way, is a sweet man! (Check out my interview with Johnson for "Race to Witch Mountain" right here)

"Tooth Fairy" is from director Michael Lembeck who gave us "Santa Clause 2 & 3," and "Connie and Carla." The film also stars Ashley Judd and Julie Andrews. This film's from Fox.

"Tooth Fairy" is rated PG and flies into theaters January 22nd, 2010.

Tooth Fairy Trailer

1 October 2009 9:39 PM, PDT | Atomic Popcorn | See recent Atomic Popcorn news »

It really kills me to see Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson wasting his talent. Really. He’s got the charisma needed to pull of some great action roles with the 1980s brand of shoot ‘em up humor that’s been missing for about a decade (only to be found in Jason Statham’s Crank films, really).

Michael Lembeck’s Tooth Fairy doesn’t help. The film finds Johnson as a jerk professional ice skater who must repent for his misdeeds by performing the silly and physically painful duties of a tooth fairy, complete with wings. Like The Santa Clause, only with more muscles.

Believe it or not, I wrote that sentence before realizing that Lembeck directed two of those films, so the comparison is valid. Who knows — the film could be surprising family fare, redeemed by a good performance from Johnson. I just hope he tries something  new soon. Take a look at the trailer below. »

Bryan Singer to Become a ‘Giant Killer’

23 September 2009 12:04 AM, PDT | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

After having every single person with a television watching "House" the other night, Bryan Singer has officially come back into the spotlight. He's already signed on for Battlestar Galactica and Excalibur, but now he's also adding a twisted version on a classic story with Jack the Giant Killer. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the director will be tackling the Princess search-and-rescue mission for New Line. The story focuses on the kidnapping of a Princess and a young farmer who must venture into Giant territory to get her back. So, yeah. Bryan Singer. Great. But that's not what I care about. What I care about is that the script is from Mark Bomback, the writer of Live Free or Die Hard. That's right - we have to assume that an updated fairy tale figure will be yelling Yippee Ki-Yay while he's stealing a golden goose. Genius. Pure, unadulterated genius. Of course, Bomback »

Disney’s Chairman Steps Down = No Johnny Depp In Pirates 4?

20 September 2009 12:59 PM, PDT | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

It was announced recently that Dick Cook, the chairman of Walt Disney studios for 38 years, has stepped down from his position, a move reportedly caused by a rough financial year. Cook released a statement proclaiming his love for every minute of working at Disney, having risen from monorail and steam train operator to chairman.

Even though Cook’s statement suggests he left entirely on his own terms, CEO Bob Iger had recently expressed his disappointment in the studio’s (Cook’s?) box office performance this year, with the likes of Race to Witch Mountain and Bedtime Stories not doing as well as they’d hoped. However, a report from the La Times yesterday says that Cook and Iger have had some trouble that extends beyond box office results. Igor emphasizes collaboration and seeks, “new ways of doing business,” whereas Cook supposedly is a traditionalist. You can read the full story »

Could departure of Disney chairman sink Pirates of the Caribbean 4?

20 September 2009 6:52 AM, PDT | The Geek Files | See recent The Geek Files news »

The dramatic exit of Walt Disney Studios chairman Dick Cook appears to have cast some doubts on plans for a fourth Pirates of the Caribbean film.

Johnny Depp, star of the studio's Pirates franchise, said he has a potential deal in place for Pirates 4 that depends on how good the script is, but adds that his passion has been severely dampened by Cook's abrupt departure.

"There's a fissure, a crack in my enthusiasm at the moment," Depp said. "It was all born in that office."

The actor was "shocked and very sad" about the loss of Cook, who had wooed him to Disney, offered him the Captain Jack Sparrow role and supported his eccentric portrayal of the character when other executives were "opposed to my body language."

Speaking to the Los Angeles Times, Depp said: "He's instantly trustworthy. And you generally don't meet people at the studios you trust. He's a rare beast. »

Another Friday: the same story, seven releases - Feature

It seems that the Indian film industry is indeed on a record making spree as far as number of films releasing on a day is concerned. Today seven films have been released and it indeed is a record of sorts. The films vying for eyeballs include Daddy Cool, Yeh Mera India, The Taking Of Pelham 123, Race To Witch Mountain, Quick Gun Murugan, Love Khichdi and Kisaan. Now let's do some mathematics, each film would have the average span of 100 minutes and so a critic has to spend 700 minutes viewing these films, i.e. he has to... »

Auto of the week: 2000 Ford Crown Victoria from Race to Witch Mountain

25 August 2009 3:38 AM, PDT | Boxwish.com | See recent BoxWish news »

There are a few key requirements to becoming a taxi driver – solid experience behind the wheel, a sense of direction and a polite manner with the public (not that all movie cabbies boast such credentials, mentioning no names Travis Bickle). Oh and a cab. Yep, it’s hard to ferry folks about without a car (piggybacks only work for solo travellers) and so to help earn his crust, Las Vegas cabbie Jack Bruno (Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson) motors around Sin City in a 2000 Ford Crown Victoria in Disney fantasy adventure Race to Witch Mountain. And with this charging onto DVD this week, we’re making the Ford our auto of the week.

The car is very much the star in this remake of the 1975 children’s favourite, as Jack picks up two young siblings with super powers who are being chased by nasty baddies making their way to the titular Witch Mountain. »

Blu-Ray Review: ‘Race to Witch Mountain’ With Dwayne Johnson a Waste of Energy

13 August 2009 2:04 PM, PDT | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – “Race to Witch Mountain,” now on Blu-Ray and DVD, is a head-scratcher, a movie with more than enough individual elements that should work but proof that a film is not just the sum of its parts. Dwayne Johnson is charismatic, AnnaSophia Robb is one of the better young actresses working today, Carla Gugino is always good, and the source material is beloved, but “Race to Witch Mountain” is a mess that never connects with its target audience or their parents.

Blu-Ray Rating: 2.0/5.0 The plot of “Race to Witch Mountain” is simple. A pair of aliens who look like teenagers (AnnaSophia Robb, Alexander Ludwig) crash land near Las Vegas. While they’re being chased by an alien bounty hunter and a group of human men in black (including Ciaran Hinds, Chris Marquette, and Tom Everett Scott), they stumble into the life of a cab driver (Johnson) and a scientist (Gugino »

Race to Witch Mountain Races to the Top of the DVD Sales Chart

13 August 2009 5:38 AM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

Race to Witch Mountain raced to the top of the home video sales chart during the week ending August 9th. This reimagining of the classic 1975 Disney film Escape to Witch Mountain grossed $67.21 in theaters, and has now nabbed the number one sales position for its first week in stores. Coming in on its heels was the Beyonce Knowles thriller Obsessed, which only sold 72% as many copies as Disney's Dwayne Johnson adventure.

Things were flip-flopped on the rental charts, though. Obsessed came in number one amongst renters, with Race to Witch Mountain falling into the number two spot with only 78% as many rentals. Fast & Furious, last week's number one seller and renter, fell into third place on both charts.

Next week sees the release of Last House on the Left [Ws] [Unrated/Rated Versions] and Hannah Montana: The Movie. Who will win the race to the top of the charts next week? That's anybody's guess. »

DVD Playhouse—August 2009

Allen Gardner

Watchmen—Director’S Cut (Warner Bros.) Director Zack Snyder’s film of Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons’ landmark graphic novel is as worthy an adaptation of a great book that has ever been filmed. In an alternative version of the year 1985, Richard Nixon is serving his third term as President and super heroes have been outlawed by a congressional act, in spite of the fact that two of the most high-profile “masks,” Dr. Manhattan (Billy Cruddup) and The Comedian (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) helped the U.S. win the Vietnam War. When The Comedian is found murdered, many former heroes become concerned that a conspiracy is afoot to assassinate retired costumed crime fighters. Former masks Nite Owl (Patrick Wilson), Silk Spectre (Malin Akerman) and still-operating Rorschach (Jackie Earle Haley, in an Oscar-worthy turn) launch an investigation of their own, all while the Pentagon’s “Doomsday »
