Who doesn’t like a low-budget slasher film with a clown causing havoc and bloodshed? Raymond Wood’s Faceless After Dark takes a new approach to this genre and turns the prey into a hunter. Wood goes with the classic slasher tropes, and you can see he has fully given in to the vision, and it pays off handsomely.

Cult comedy Baroness von Sketch Show may already be on its second season in its native Canada, but U.S. audiences are getting the chance to catch up on all the laughs now that the show is airing on IFC.
With shows like Portlandia, The Birthday Boys and Comedy Bang! Bang!, the network has been a haven for quirky, creative sketch comedy, but Baroness is a welcome niche in the crowded field: four women over 40 skewering the absurdities of everyday life. Where many other sketch shows are wildly over-the-top or lean towards bonkers scenarios, actor-writers Carolyn Taylor, Aurora Browne, Jennifer Whalen and Meredith MacNeill take things far enough to be hilarious, but not so insane that scenes are unrelatable.

Need to catch up? Check out last week’s Power recap here.
The scars up and down his arm prove he’s no Teflon don, but man, is Power‘s Kanan a survivor or what?
I don’t endorse his methods or motives — the guy is still a pretty cold-hearted individual — but you’ve got to toss a little respect to someone who can survive prison, a knock-down-drag-out with his former protégé and a building fire. Plus: Kanan being alive complicates things for Ghost, and the more complications in James St. Patrick’s life, the better Power gets.

If you didn’t know, I’m a mom. I’m living a weird geek-mom-meets-yoga-pants version of Leave It To Beaver with my husband, our two kids, our suburban house, and our gaggle of pets. There are days I pick a kid up from practice before Table Top game night. But not fitting into any of the pre-assigned “Mommy” boxes can make everything from playdates to Pto an awkward experience. Too commercial to be a Crunchy Mom. Too career-oriented to be a Mom-bie (Zombie Mom). Too busy to be a Soccer Mom. Too worried to be a Free-Range Mom, but too lackadaisical to be a Helicopter Mom. The list goes on and on of what a mom is Supposed to be. Then the trailer for Bad Moms dropped, and I actually saw a reflection of myself. Is…is this what men feel like when they watch trailers for every other broad comedy?...

“Yet the punctum shows no preference for morality or good taste; the punctum can be ill-bred.” —Roland Barthes, Camera LucidaThe first rude challenge of this movie is watching it without permanently devaluing Spring Breakers as a hot, precious high-conceptualist mess compared to the crisp genre elegance on parade here. I can’t be certain, but it seems like Harmony Korine dreamed up his movie drowsing behind his shades during a matinee reverie of this insta-classic. If not, he should have! The plot has a documentary-like simplicity. Maybe it really happened. Ancestral fish-freaks buzzsaw into the thumping “sexy-time” heart of American youth culture, during a Spring Break weekend on a desert lake in Arizona. That’s it. The Sayles/Dante original, recall if you must, was a lame anti-authoritarian parable (the seminal proto-SyFy Channel movie) with occasional dark comic touches. Piranha 3D is not a parable of anything, thank Corman! It...

A new trailer has just debuted for the highly anticipated second season return of BBC America’s breakout hit “Orphan Black,” and it just further reiterates that Tatiana Maslaney – all seven of her – are in pretty deep trouble. First, there’s Sarah, our British and rough about the edges single mom and lead protagonist, who’s in a desperate search for her kidnapped daughter. Now, it turns out, her protector/love interest Paul (Dylan Bruce) may have turned his back on her as well, though she seems to be finding comfort in the arms of newcomer Michiel Huisman. Soccer mom Alison gets [...]

It might not even be Thanksgiving quite yet, but you can celebrate Black Friday a little early with Zap2it's handy holiday gift guide for the "Orphan Black" fan in your life. (Get it? "Black" Friday? Whatever. Alison would've totally laughed at that.)
Bonus: Due to the fact that there's very little official "Orphan Black" merch available, most of this stuff is both fan-created (go fandom!) and affordable (yay cheap!). Here are our suggestions to make your "Orphan Black"-loving loved one's holiday the best ever.
Gifts under $10:
Clone masks ($0): Halloween may be over, but that doesn't mean you can't host your own Clone Club gathering at home. BBC America has masks for every clone, created by artist John J. Salomone, that you can print out for your very own club meeting. Just don't tell anyone else about it, that's totally against the rules.
Strawberry jello ($1): It's Helena's favorite food.

Review Billy Grifter 8 May 2013 - 07:29
Billy notes an improvement in this week's Defiance, which is steadily getting better. Here's his review of episode four...
This review contains spoilers.
1.4 A Well Respected Man
Someone in the talkback for the last episode asked, not unreasonably, if I get all the "crap TV shows" to watch? In short, yes, that would be me. But the blame is entirely mine, because I commit to review shows based on the information I have before the pilot is screened, rather than direct experience of seeing it beforehand. With Defiance my choice was driven by those creatively behind the show, who all have some really excellent productions in their résumés. That's not a guarantee, by any stretch, but you throw your hand up, and occasionally it comes back down with fingers missing.
I'm not willing to give up entirely on Defiance yet, it's a long way from Revolution-bad,...

Conspiracies and cloning may be new concepts to the uninitiated, but to the initiated we’ve been there and done that a million times before. The stories always begin with characters who discover that the normal lives they thought they had were a total farce; then, they begin a journey that usually involves a rising body count. While Orphan Black doesn’t offer anything new to the sci-fi genre in its first two episodes, it does give us a playful character in Sarah (Tatiana Maslany), whose accent-switching journey of identity theft and self-discovery is downright fun to watch.
In Orphan Black’s debut episode, we were introduced to Sarah, a British foster child with a punk rock style and coke-dealing friends. She saw a woman, who looked just like her, and stole her identity. It turns out that the woman, Elizabeth Childs, wasn’t Sarah’s only doppleganger. A dead...

What do you call a show that can make you laugh out loud and tear up in the space of twenty minutes? Do you know? Because I sure don't.
The New Normal reminds me of a kitten chasing a laser pointer dot where the writers are the kitten and the dot is brilliance. Sometimes they miss by inches, sometimes they're looking for the dot under the sofa when it's behind them and then there are times when they just pounce it square on.
Last night's episode reminded me why I fell in love with this show.
We begin with David talking about how he really hopes their baby is a boy. He's dreamed his whole life of raising a son. Most guys can relate to that, I think. Bravid have decided to wait to find out, however, until the baby is born. I don't really understand why couples do this,...

Troll Hunter director Andre Øvredal has signed on to his first Hollywood feature film. Empire reports that the Norwegian director is attached to direct Carpe Demon: The Adventures Of A Demon-Hunting Soccer Mom, which is being adapted from Julie Kenner's book.
The project reminds me of an adult version of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Its story follows "Kate Connor, a woman living a life of suburban domesticity and trying to put her secret past as a slayer of demons firmly behind her. Except that her plan comes undone when underworld denizens start surfacing in her adopted hometown of San Diablo."
The book is the first of five installments to date, with Carpe Demon being followed by California Demon, Demons Are Forever, Deja Demon, and Demon Ex Machina. Dan and Kevin Hagerman (Hotel Transylvania) penned the screenplay. A start date and cast have yet to be announced.

It's not unusual for directors of breakout international hits to be lured to Hollywood, and Troll Hunter director Andre Øvredal is the latest to join the club. He's just signed on for Carpe Demon: The Adventures Of A Demon-Hunting Soccer Mom, adapted from the book by Julie Kenner. First published in 2005, the novel is the first in a series (franchise!) about Kate Connor, a woman living a life of suburban domesticity and trying to put her secret past as a slayer of demons firmly behind her. Except that her plan comes undone when underworld denizens start surfacing in her adopted hometown of San Diablo (well, with that name she really should have known). In short, it's a kind of Buffy-as-grown-up affair: Whatever Happened To Buffy?, if you like. There are five instalments to date, with Carpe Demon being followed by California Demon, Demons Are Forever, Deja Demon and Demon Ex Machina.

When you direct a movie with a title like “Trollhunter” it isn’t a huge jump to imagine directing something called “Carpe Demon: The Adventures of a Demon-Hunting Soccer Mom”. I can see some correlation. And that is exactly what Andre Overdal is going to do. “Carpe Demon”, which also happens to be the name of an episode of “Charmed” (don’t ask me how I know that), is based on a novel by Julie Kenner, part of the “Kate Connor, Demon Hunter” series. You get a good idea of what the story is all about from the title, the major points anyway, but the tagline is pretty good: “Carpools. Crabgrass. Creatures from the depths of hell. Suburbia has its problems too…” Here’s what Barnes and Noble has to say about the book: Lots of women put their careers aside once the kids come along. Kate Connor, for instance,...

Now here's a gig that makes a lot of sense. Troll Hunter director, André Øvredal, has signed on to direct an adaptation of Carpe Demon: The Adventures of a Demon-Hunting Soccer Mom for 1492 Pictures.
Based on Julie Kenner's best-selling novel of the same title, it's fairly self-explanatory. A soccer mom by day hunts demons at night. Or something. Considering the odd concept, it sounds like Øvredal will be right at home with the material. He certainly knows how to balance the fun and the scares.
Unfortunately, we don't have any casting as of yet, but it should be fun to see who winds up taking the starring role in this one. Watch this spot for the very latest and greatest. This one has the potential to be something special, and that's why we'll be keeping close watch of it.

When we announced the 2010 Fright Meter Award nominations back in early January, we have several people ask about Sue Stevens and her nomination for Best Supporting Actress for The Wrong House. The common theme of these question was "who is she?" and "I have not heard of the film." It was a glaring inclusion for some, considering she other nominees in the category included performances from big budget, studio films, such as Katie Cassidy. While Sue's film may be the least seen film of those nominated for Best Supporting Actress for 2010, don't let that fool you; her performance as Sue, a seemingly typical soccer mom who becomes something quite different when her house is robbed and she seeks revenge on those involved, is a wonderful piece of acting. The film was obviously shot on a shoe-string budget, but Stevens' performance towers as she creates one of the most disturbing and...

On the eve of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, I'm all about accepting others as they are. Really, don't we want to carry that feeling of loving our fellow man with us all the time? Isn't it a wonderful experience when our hearts are full and we're just moseying along through our day, taking note of other human beings and how warm and wonderful we can be to each other? (Feel free to hear the gentle sound of birds tweeting in your head as you read this.) Life is beautiful people and we can all strive to get along better each and every day.
Just the other day I was driving along on the highway, appreciating life. Sometimes when I'm cruising, I get in the groove -- the tunes are jamming, the sun is shining and I feel at one with my vehicle. So I was having one of those...

Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World has finally arrived, and smashed it’s way into the hearts of everyone who saw it. Unfortunately, it wasn’t nearly as many people as it really could have used. Truly, the age of motion-controlled gaming has arrived. Sony Computer Entertainment just revealed the Playstation Move. They have beaten Microsoft to the punch. We now know what Move is, how it works, and — to some degree — how much it costs. But I have a question to ask Sony: who is it for?
From the moment Sony first revealed their motion control initiative at E3 2009, I thought their intentions were distinctly different from Nintendo and Microsoft. Let’s think about the competition for a moment.
Nintendo, famously and successfully, pioneered motion — no, gestural — control with the Wii. Suddenly, it was easy for people who had never played a game to jump right in. The hardware and the games exuded friendliness and approachability. The price was right. The rest is history.
Microsoft’s motion control initiative, the camera-based Natal, is designed to lure those same casual gamers. In fact, it’s designed to be even more casual-friendly.
