David Koepp To Direct Premium Rush

12 November 2009 1:00 PM, PST | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

You may not know his name, but everyone in America has seen David Koepp's work. Remember that Spielberg movie about dinosaurs that came out in 1993? Koepp wrote it. Remember its sequel in 1997? Koepp wrote it. Remember that film about that superhero with spider powers from 2002? Koepp wrote it. Remember the most recent Indiana Jones movie and how it made you want to vomit blood? Koepp wrote that, too. He is the go-to man for blockbusters in Hollywood, but always gets overshadowed by the bigger name (Spielberg, Lucas) or the bigger character. He has also been directing since 1994, but has yet to have the same success that he has had as a writer. That, however, may change very soon. Variety is reporting that Sony has tapped Koepp to direct Premium Rush, a big-budget action film scripted by John Kamps, whom Koepp previously worked with on Ghost Town and Zathura. The »

David Koepp Directing Bike Messenger Movie Premium Rush

12 November 2009 12:21 PM, PST | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

David Koepp, who's probably better known as a screenwriter than a director, has set up his next directing project at Sony. Koepp will helm Premium Rush, a bike messenger action movie, being produced by Gavin Polone (who last worked on Zombieland). The story centers on a New York bike messenger who picks up an envelope at Columbia University to deliver. A dirty cop is desperate to get his hands on the envelope as well, and chases the bike messenger throughout the city. The screenplay was written by Koepp and his frequent collaborator John Kamps. I've got to admit, this sounds like it'll be awesome, I'm already excited to see it. Koepp last directed Ghost Town as well as Secret Window, Stir of Echoes, and The Trigger Effect before that. His most recent screenplays include Angels & Demons, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, Zathura, and War of the »

David Koepp Speeds Towards a Premium Rush

12 November 2009 10:24 AM, PST | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

Apparently, David Koepp likes the directing chair. Although this year’s Ghost Town broke a four-year hiatus from directing, Koepp is getting behind the camera again, this time for Premium Rush. Unfortunately for music fans, it will not be a behind-the-music look at everyone’s favorite Canadian rockers. Instead, Premium Rush will tell the story of a twentysomething bike messenger who innocently picks up an envelope from Columbia University. Of course, a dirty cop wants the envelope and will stop at nothing to get it. Though Koepp has written fantastic movies like Jurassic Park and Spiderman he has directed bad films like Stir of Echoes and Secret Window. Which will Premium Rush be? It’s too soon to tell but Variety is reporting that it will be a big-budget action flick so at the least it will have things that go boom.

David Koepp Will Write/Direct That ‘Quicksilver’ Remake You’ve Been Wanting

12 November 2009 7:31 AM, PST | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

That may not be technically accurate... Per Variety, David Koepp will write and direct a new film called Premium Rush about a bike messenger with a valuable package who gets chased throughout New York City by a dirty cop. The film "is being conceived as a big-budget actioner, much like the films Koepp is known for penning, and will feature the kind of elaborate chases associated with a William Friedkin pic." Koepp is "known for penning" quite a few films, but his big actioner ones include Angels & Demons, Indiana Jones & The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, War of the Worlds, Spider-Man, and The Lost World: Jurassic Park. That's an incredibly mixed bag quality-wise, so there's no telling if the new film will be any good. Koepp has directed before, but all of those films (including the under-rated Ghost Town) have been much lower-budgeted affairs. It's obviously way too early in the process to seriously question Koepp's intention »

David Koepp Wants A Premium Rush

11 November 2009 11:40 PM, PST | EmpireOnline | See recent EmpireOnline news »

Here’s an interesting thing: David Koepp, one of the most powerful screenwriters in Hollywood, is at last going to direct the kind of movie that he bangs out on a regular basis for his regular boss, Steven Spielberg.Which is to say that Koepp has signed to direct Premium Rush, sadly not a biopic about the greatest striker in Liverpool’s history but instead a high-concept, big-budget thriller about a bike messenger who picks up a parcel so important that he’s chased through a city by a corrupt cop, who’s desperate to get his mitts on it.So far, Koepp’s four directorial outings have all been relatively low-key affairs that have been based, to some degree or other, on a supernatural/fantastical premise, from Ghost Town to Stir Of Echoes to Secret Window to The Trigger Effect.Premium Rush, from the deliberately ridiculous title to the plot, »

David Koepp will helm "Premium Rush" for Columbia Pictures, directing from a screenplay he wrote with frequent collaborator John Kamps. Koepp last directed "Ghost Town" starring Ricky Gervas, Tea Leoni and Greg Kinnear for DreamWorks. Gavin Polone ("Zombieland") produces. This marks the fifth time he has worked with Koepp. The story centers on a New York City bike messenger in his twenties who picks up an envelope at Columbia University. However, he's soon pursued by a dirty cop who is desperate to get the envelope and chases him throughout the city. David Koepp to Direct Bike Messenger Action Film Premium Rush

11 November 2009 9:06 PM, PST | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

David Koepp is best known as one of Hollywood's highest paid screenwriters (and one of Spielberg's scribes). His screenwriting credits include everything from Toy Soldiers, Jurassic Park, and Carlito's Way, to Panic Room, Spider-Man, War of the Worlds and Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. For the last decade he's been trying to make the transition into feature film directing. He made his debut with the promising Stir of Echoes, but has since followed up with some lackluster efforts, the 2004 Stephen King adaptation Secret Window and the 2008 Ricky Gervais supernatural romantic comedy Ghost Town. Honestly, I think Koepp is a much better screenwriter than he is a filmmaker, and that's not saying much considering the abundance of lackluster screenplays he's been involved with in the last 10-12 years. With that kind of intro, you must be really interested in his next directorial effort (yes, that was ... »

Ricky Gervais to host Golden Globes

26 October 2009 4:12 PM, PDT | The Scorecard Review | See recent Scorecard Review news »

Ricky Gervais will be the first person to host the Golden Globe Awards since 1995.

The creator of the British version of “The Office” and star of films The Invention of Lying and Ghost Town will be the man of the hour (or hours) on January 17, 2010 on NBC.

The 67th Annual Golden Globe Awards are clearly doing something a little different and the timing couldn’t be better. Last year the Academy Awards went away from a comedy with Hugh Jackman (aka the Wolverine song-and-dance man) as a host. While they called it a success, it now opens the door for another awards show to be the one to make fun of Hollywood while honoring it as well. It doesn’t hurt that there’s an open bar at the event as well.

Gervais released this statement:

Not only is this the biggest Hollywood celebration of the industry which includes both film and TV, »

Ricky Gervais to Host Golden Globes in 2010

26 October 2009 12:24 PM, PDT | TVovermind.com | See recent TVovermind.com news »

Today NBC, the broadcaster of the Golden Globe Awards, has annoucced that British comedian Ricky Gervais will host the awards ceremony on Sunday, January 17, 2010.

I understand that he's not universally loved, but I find Gervais to be very funny.  I had the opportunity to meet him very briefly this year at the Toronto International Film Festival, where he premiered The Invention of Lying.  He was super-nice and stopped to take a picture with a friend of mine.  My friend Cindy think he's "offensively hillarious".

Unlike the Oscars, the Golden Globes have not had a host since 1995, but NBC and the Hollywood Foreign Press Association have decided to change things up:

"Not only is this the biggest Hollywood celebration of the industry which includes both film and TV, but also an environment where I feel I can get free reign as a host. I have resisted many other offers like this, »

Ricky Gervais to Host the 67th Annual Golden Globe Awards

26 October 2009 12:20 PM, PDT | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

British comedian Ricky Gervais is no stranger to laughter, making his way from the hit BBC series "The Office" all the way to leading roles in films like Ghost Town and more recently The Invention of Lying (you can check out Brandon's review here). Now Gervais will finally get a job that I've been hoping he'd get for a few years now, as he's been named the host of the 67th Annual Golden Globe Awards, which will be broadcast live on the evening of January 17th, 2010 on NBC. This marks the first time that the Hollywood Foreign Press Association's yearly gala has had a real host since 1995! No pressure whatsoever, Mr. Gervais. I've wanted to Gervais to host a gig like this for some time now because whenever he's presented at these awards shows, he brings a motherload of hilarity (click either of those for examples). Apparently he's been asked »

Ricky Gervais Hosting This Year's Golden Globes

26 October 2009 11:40 AM, PDT | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

Oscar-watchers have been furtively hoping for years now that Ricky Gervais might bring some of his special dry humor to the awards ceremony one of these days, but it's those blasted Golden Globes that have won him in the end. Variety is reporting that Gervais has been chosen to host this year's Golden Globes broadcast, for reasons evident to anyone who watches the various clips below. Really, the only thing about this that's bad news is that Gervais won't be hosting the Oscars, though that probably wasn't going to happen with musicals-guy Adam Shankman behind it. And give how unwatchable the Globes can be sometimes-- all the awards for miniseries!-- Gervais is likely to make things a lot more entertaining. Especially if he brings Steve Carella along to continue their epic feud. Of course, there are some theories that Gervais's movies thus far-- Ghost Town and The Invention of »

Weekend Box Office: 'Paranormal Activity' Rides Wave of Buzz

12 October 2009 8:02 AM, PDT | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

A slow-roll platform release is a high-risk strategy, but Paramount has really hit on something with Paranormal Activity. The movie expanded from 30 to 160 screens this weekend, accompanied by good reviews and hype that Paramount marketers almost killed themselves building on the internet, and was greeted with a $44,000 per-screen average, amounting to a fairly eye-popping $7 million weekend. It wouldn't have worked if the movie weren't pretty good, and the momentum is sure to fade as the movie expands further, but still: kudos all around. It would have been easy to dump this little gem into a few theaters and let it die (see: The Midnight Meat Train.)

The weekend's only new wide release, Couples Retreat, capitalized on its cast and bright-colored marketing to the tune of $35 million -- a strong October bow, and par for the course for Vince Vaughn, who can open a rom-com like nobody's business. Chris Rock's »

Weekend Report: 'Zombieland' Livens Up Horror Comedy Genre

5 October 2009 2:14 PM, PDT | Box Office Mojo | See recent BoxOfficeMojo.com news »

The moribund horror comedy sub-genre showed a glimmer of vitality with the ripsnorting debut of Zombieland, which yanked $24.7 million out of around 3,900 screens at 3,036 sites. Despite Zombieland and the continued strength of Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs and the Toy Story franchise, though, overall weekend business was off six percent from the same period last year, when Beverly Hills Chihuahua ruled, and on the low end for the timeframe.

In the realm of zombie movies, Zombieland had the second highest-grossing start on record behind the Dawn of the Dead remake, but, more importantly, it was the first horror comedy in recent memory to find significant theatrical success. The only horror comedies to claim greater initial attendance in the past two decades were the Scary Movie pictures, but they primarily appealed as spoofs. Failure is the norm, with movies like Jennifer's Body and Snakes on a Plane among the corpses. »

Box Office: ‘Zombieland’ Rocks, Everything Else Not So Much

It's a rare weekend in which the best movie is also the most commercial and the most popular.  But the entertaining-as-hell zombie comedy Zombieland, starring Woody Harrelson, Jesse Eisenberg, Emma Stone, and Abigail Breslin scored a #1 opening this weekend with an estimated $25 million from 3,036 theaters. The other newcomers were weak or worse.  Faring best was The Invention of Lying, the high-concept Ricky Gervais comedy, which made $7.4 million and came in fourth.  That's a notch up from the $5 million opening of Gervais's last movie, Ghost Town, but considering the supporting cast (Jennifer Garner, Jonah Hill, Tina Fey, ... »

Review: The Invention of Lying – Written by, directed by and starring Ricky Gervais (Obviously)

5 October 2009 9:14 AM, PDT | t5m.com | See recent t5m.com news »

If like me you saw last year’s Ghost Town, you may not have been looking forward to Ricky Gervais’ second Hollywood film as a leading man. In this case Gervais is behind the writing desk and the camera as well as being onscreen, so slightly higher expectations were inevitable given his oft proven skills as a craftsman of comedy. The result is a sentimental and safe rom-com which paradoxically criticises the illogical and damaging effects of organised religion. Whilst these issues may seem polemical to an American audience, here in the largely secular UK The Invention of Lying can feel slightly patronising and irrelevant. What you may have gathered from the trailers is that Gervais plays Mark Bellison, a middle aged loser who lives in a world in which the human race has never evolved the ability to lie. Bellison then discovers that he can in fact bend the »

Box Office Goes To Zombieland

The undead hordes swept the box office in the Us this weekend, with rom-zom-com Zombieland marching straight to the top with a pretty respectable $25 million opening weekend. In its wake was Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, falling off the top after two weeks, and the re-released double-bill of Toy Story and Toy Story 2 in 3D in third. The moral of this story? If you're not in 3D, you better have zombies. The Invention of Lying came in fourth with $7.35m, which was better than Gervais' Ghost Town but down on similar 'what if' comedies like Liar Liar. Surrogates followed, with a 50% drop on last week, and then was Michael Moore's Capitalism: A Love Story, which expanded to wide release but still made only $4.85m, less even than Sicko nevermind Fahrenheit 9/11 or Bowling for Columbine.New release Whip It!, about a girl rollerskating team, followed that with a »
