Dear TV,
Sometimes your scenes involving supersmart characters take dumb, dreadfully expected turns.
I’m talking about when a smartie’s outburst of techno babble is met by his or her layman colleagues with glazed eyes and dropped jaws, followed by the inevitable variation on, “In English, please.”

Wow! This Fast and Furious feud between Tyrese Gibson and Dwyane Johnson has escalated into complete ridiculousness! Now Gibson is threatening to quit the franchise over Johnson's involvement. Let's do a quick breakdown of everything that's happened so far.
The first thing that happened was that Gibson posted a rant urging Johnson to not make the spin-off film with Jason Statham before Fast and Furious 9. He removed the post from his Instagram, but here's a screenshot:
Not long after, Gibson posted an old video of Johnson talking shit about his 2015 album Black Rose, but it looked like Johnson might have been joking around when he made it. You can watch that video below:
Haters come in many forms...... In my Kanye voice #BlackRose is one of the greatest R&B Soul Albums of all time my single #Shame was #1 on Billboard for 16 weeks my album came in #1 on the Top...

Celebs have been stepping out for great causes this October!
Before getting booted from Dancing With The Stars, Nick Lachey and his wife (and fellow DWTS contestant!) Vanessa joined Top Chef Kids co-host Curtis Stone and his wife, actress Lindsay Price, on the red carpet at AdoptTogether's Annual Baby Ball Gala at Neuehouse in Hollywood on Oct. 21.
Tom Welling, Amy Smart and Twilight's Rachelle LeFevre were also among those taking in the the carnival-themed soiree, which Vanessa and Curtis were co-hosting. The duo helped raise over $138,000 during the evening's live auction and also inaugurated "World Adoption Day," which has been designated as Nov. 9.

Dom has been the undeniable leader of the Fast & Furious Franchise from its humble beginnings back in 2001. Now Vin Diesel is calling on his Fast & Furious family to make good and cut out all the social media drama.
Following Tyrese Gibson's call-out of Dwayne Johnson over the delay of the ninth Fast & Furious movie, Diesel has responded, stressing that it takes a team to keep a massive movie franchise afloat. Production issues and delays are bound to take place. He did this in a heartfelt post fondly looking back on Johnson's introduction to the Fast & Furious fam:
"I know there has been a lot of speculation as to why the Fast 9 release date was pushed... but it would be unfair to say it is anyone's fault," he writes. "As we plot the course to expand the Fast & Furious universe, one must be mindful to take stock of the roads we took to get here.

Simmering tensions seem to underpin the delay of Fast & Furious 9 by a year...
Yikes. Things behind the scenes of the Fast & Furious movies don’t seem to be on the happy side, following the announcement last week that Fast & Furious 9 has been put back a year to 2020. And Tyrese, one of the main members of the ensemble cast, is in little doubt where the finger should be pointed.

A post shared by Ilaria Urbinati (@ilariaurbinati) on May 1, 2017 at 5:09pm Pdt Did Rami Malek, Riz Ahmed, and Donald Glover start a band or something without telling us? Because this selfie of them at the Met Gala on Monday night looks like it belongs on an album cover. Although that scenario would be something out of our wildest dreams (and is at least 1/3 true), in actuality the photo was shared by their stylist, Ilaria Urbinati, on Instagram in celebration of the high-fashion event. "My boys at the Met tonight!!" she wrote. "A little selfie love for their proud lil' stylist stuck back in La (i.e. Yours truly). Rami and Riz in @DiorHomme, Donald in @burberry #MetBall2017." Apparently now we not only know who to thank for Rami's chic Lucifer ensemble, but also for the photo we'll be framing and putting on our bedside table later tonight.

John Wick‘s box-office score made inevitable another go-round with the seemingly undefeatable assassin whose soft spot for muscle cars and puppy dogs led to a whole lot of trouble, in turn making inevitable the fear (at least for yours truly) of diminishing returns. Is there any way one of this century’s leaner, finer American action movies wouldn’t be given the bigger-is-better treatment? Probably not. What about the kick-ass picture really needed an adding-to? Whatever its flaws, John Wick hit where it counts — a place where improvement is possible, certainly, if not so necessary when running the risk that a good time be diminished with weak imitation. Now that a sequel is upon us, you may ask: is it a step towards something better?
The answer is a bit of yes and no both, and that, I’m happy to report, is just fine. Closer to an expansion...

Dahhlings, Mariah Carey doesn't do birthdays. She has anniversaries. And when her beau, Bryan Tanaka, popped out of a cake dressed as a Chippendale on Sunday's episode of Mariah's World, you'd have to be living under the world's biggest rock to not know that Mimi's anniversary was much better than her New Year's Eve.
From the looks of it, she also had a pretty great Easter and Christmas, as we learned from this collage-y episode, which went from her lip-syncing her own Christmas song, "Oh Santa!," on her private jet with her crew to Easter and candy eggs in just minutes.
But that "anniversary" party -- we need to talk about the champagne Mimi pours down the chiseled chest of "Magic Tanaka."

Camila Cabello isn’t the only member of Fifth Harmony who’s flexing out her solo chops: it looks like Lauren Jauregui is about to join the party, too, judging by some recent posts on social media.
According to Instagram, Jauregui is in the studio making some noise with producers such as The Rascals, Ljay Currie, and Tim Suby. Fun fact of the day with The Rascals is that one part of the production duo consists of Leon Thomas III, who was previously best known for starring role on the hit Nickelodeon show, Victorious. The reason why this is relevant is because, besides the fact that he’s a great producer, he worked with fellow Victorious co-star Ariana Grande on her debut record, Yours Truly. If Jauregui’s sound is supposed to have any resemblance whatsoever of Grande’s era from way back when, then we’re going to be in for a treat.

Our conversation this hour is with two lifelong chums with a history of collaboration that has taken on a life of its own as they’ve become Lost in Criterion. Adam Glass and Pat Dorgan help me understand what it is like for two people to dive headfirst into the collection with few preconceived notions on where it would take them and what sort of visionquest it has been so far.

While we know the Court Of Owls will be making their presence felt during the upcoming third season of Gotham, it seems there is an even bigger development on the horizon. During an interview with TV Line at San Diego Comic-Con this weekend, Ben McKenzie revealed that his version of Jim Gordon might be undergoing a drastic change. "Yours truly might become another iconic DC character," McKenzie said cryptically when asked about new information. "... in the middle of the season. At the end of the season. He might take on the persona of a different character. That's an exclusive!" McKenzie exclaimed following a shocked reaction from the interviewer and his castmates. "And I might have just gone too far..." Gordon famously donned the mantle of Batman in a recent run by Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo. While McKenzie's comments do nothing to indicate that Gordon will become a version of Batman in the show,...

Something that we have all learned to expect from Gotham is that the show’s producers aren’t afraid to shake up the mythology. Sure, major changes may grind the gears of purists from time to time, but you must admit that a measure of originality needs to be kept when trying to surprise a prime time audience for a show that will air for an indefinite period.
TV Line recently caught up with the cast to discuss what to expect from Season 3. The usual insight into certain characters was given, along with this year’s theme: “Heroes Will Fall.” Seeing as how Season 2 had a deep focus on villains, this seems like a logical progression.
But, without a doubt, the biggest bomb dropped was by Ben McKenzie, who had this to say about his character, Jim Gordon:

Arijit Singh, best remembered for his renditions of hit tracks from films like Aashiqui 2 and Dilwale seemed to be at a loss on Tuesday night. In fact Singh, who has recently recorded a track for the upcoming Salman Khan starrer Sultan, apparently rubbed the star the wrong way and was slighted for the same. However in an attempt to set the record straight Arijit posted a public apology on his facebook page (which he incidentally later deleted) urging Salman not to drop his song from Sultan.
Below is a copy of Arijit's apologetic post:

Having won critical praise for his previous Cafe Carlyle residencies, Tony Award-winner John Lloyd Young returns with an all-new show titled Yours Truly, February 9-20. After seeing his first appearance at the storied venue, where he performed selections from his debut album My Turn, Stephen Holden of The New York Times said Young 'has a disciplined one-in-a-million high tenor shading into falsetto that he can direct through the stratosphere.' Upon his second residency, Mr. Holden praised Young for 'tapping into the raw feelings and intensity of a teenage romantic dreaming out loud.' Yours Truly, his first engagement back in NYC since starring in Clint Eastwood's Jersey Boys film, will feature a fresh set of lushly romantic '60s-era RampB ballads and a few brand new songwriting collaborations. A full band list will be announced soon.

This letter is part of "Behind the Celluloid Curtain," a series of correspondences between Scout Tafoya and Veronika Ferdman on the topic of Soviet cinema, with each series organized around a theme. This particular series focuses on love in a time of discontent.Dear Scout,I have wanted to discuss Soviet cinema with someone for so very, very long. Despite being born in the former Soviet Union (and spending the greater part of my childhood in the United States) it took me a long time to turn my eyes to Soviet films. You asked what I was told about that country (or, really, idea) while growing up, but perhaps out of some subconscious desire to assimilate as quickly as possible I spent much of my childhood and adolescence skirting around the issue of my heritage—I didn't read the literature, watch the films, or want anything to do with that part of myself.

Ariana Grande and Big Sean are certainly putting the "P" in Pda. The couple - who made quite a stir when they walked the Grammys red carpet together in February - shared a kiss during a surprise duet at the Detroit leg of Grande's Honeymoon Tour on Saturday. Big Sean, 26, first surprised the audience when he stepped out on stage to sing "Big Mistake" with his girlfriend. But the smooch didn't happen until three songs later when the Detroit native returned to duet with Grande, 21, on their song "Right There," which was featured on the pop star's 2013 album Yours Truly.

Mysteryland 2015 isn’t so mysterious anymore, as ID&T have released phase 1 of their eclectic lineup today, and it’s absolutely huge. Bringing in Alesso, Dillon Francis, Martin Garrix, Oliver Heldens, Steve Angello, Nicky Romero and more to headline, along with stages hosted by Size and Spinnin’ Records, it looks like the Netherlands is going to be the place to be during the end of August (the 29th and 30th, to be exact).
“We are so happy that we can offer our visitors a two-day program,” says Duncan Stutterheim, founder of ID&T. “Not only can they party longer, but most of all, they have more time to explore the wide variety of music, arts and culture on offer. Besides, we are proud that we can give a platform to so many talents, artists and creative.”
Take a peak at the full Mysteryland 2015 lineup below and let us know what you make of it.

Despite only being in the game for a few years, 21-year-old singer Ariana Grande always steps out in style. With a petite body, signature high pony, and an angelic face, Ariana has proven time after time that her voice is not the only thing to be reckoned with. Since the early start of her career, celebrity stylist Brigitte Pilla has been the woman behind some of Ariana’s most iconic looks. In case you needed a receipt, she is the genius who put Ariana in those white thigh-high stockings and Ysl pumps for the “Problem” single cover. The two met while both working on Nickelodeon’s Victorious back in 2010. “We kind of built a friendship there, and then I came on when she first started her first album (Yours Truly),” Pilla tells us. Since Ariana’s start as a teen star, her style has definitely gone from shy school girl,...

The man behind the underwater legend! After enjoying a couple days shrouded in mystery, the left shark from Katy Perry’s Super Bowl halftime performance has finally been unmasked. Dancer Bryan Gaw stepped forward to claim his rightful title as the new Internet sensation. “Yep. The rumors are true. Yours truly. #SuperBowlXLIX #KatyPerryHalftimeShow,” he captioned a photo from the most viewed televised event in American history on Instagram. Gaw is a longtime dancer for Perry, 30, performing on her Prismatic World Tour over the past year. The left shark became [...]...

On Sunday night, Katy Perry soared across the sky like an NBC PSA, Marshawn Lynch went into "Beast Mode," and the Patriots took home another Super Bowl title. But all of that pales in comparison to the big game's breakout stars: the halftime sharks. These giant sea creatures boogied through the Pepsi Super Bowl Xlix Halftime Show in a blaze of glory that left thousands of folks scrambling to Twitter and millions of viewers echoing the same question: "Who is left shark?' Yes, these oddly endearing felt monsters stole the show, but it was the left finned dancer who truly soared.

A glittering purple unicorn landed smack in the middle of American Idol‘s Season 14 New Orleans audition stop — which in no way suggests that the show’s producers surprised us with a special return appearance by Nicki Minaj at the judges’ table. (People genuinely like Keith Urban, after all — they don’t want to see him break out into a Ptsd-induced panic attack.)
Rather, I’m talking about the Idoloonie Nation getting the all-too-rare opportunity to see a 2-to-1 vote against sending a contestant to Hollywood.
Don’t cry for 28-year-old Sarah Quintana, though. Sure, Keith was the only one...

1/2 my screener stack. The ones that are coming with me for the holiday. Just in case. What do you still have to cram in before your film year is done? I imagine a lot given the Christmas release dates, damn these last-minute movies, amirite? This Thanksgiving, I am very thankful for screenings and screeners. I couldn't keep up without them given the writing and interviewing and blog prep and awards coverage necessary in December and January.
Screener Suggestions
Over at the Gurus of Gold, David Poland asked us to name three screeners we'd suggest that Academy / SAG / etcetera voters watch over the holiday break. The collective results aren't up yet but I went with:

So this week I ended up grabbing physical copies of the comics I usually review for the website. It occurred to me, while at the shop, that the money I was spending digitally to get my comics would be better spent at the comic book shop I love so much. But then, when I got home, I remembered: oh yeah, I have to actually put these comics somewhere. I considered having a contest to give them away when I’m done reviewing them but that would seem like bribing readers and that’s not something I condone. Plus, I’m not sure I’d give away the comics I actually enjoyed. I just don’t quite know what to do with the failures and I can’t predict what’s going to be a failure reliably enough to avoid them. So, sadly, I’ll be returning to digital issues next week,...

We're all used to the Oscar ceremony drawing monotonous "it's too long!" complaints. Yours truly doesn't share that view. Hell, if they wanted to do 9-hour broadcasts and include all the honoraries again and give more attention to the craft categories, and never skimp on any of the four category clip reels for the actors, I'd gladly watch each additional minute. But the super long Oscar ceremony is actually not a historic consistency. The earliest Oscars were short banquets and once they started televising them in the 50s the lengths varied.
Gigi made a clean sweep with 9 Oscars but with no acting nominations. Burl Ives (The Big Country), Susan Hayward (I Want To Live!), and David Niven and Wendy Hiller (not pictured) from Separate Tables won the acting Oscars.
The shortest of all televised ceremonies was the 1958 Oscars, broadcast live on April 6th, '59. It was only 100 minutes long. Can you imagine it?...

There are few live entertainment experiences more rewarding than seeing the Superstars and Divas of World Wrestling Entertainment live. Sunday night, October 5, the men and women of Vince McMahon’s sports-entertainment empire rolled into Allentown, Pennsylvania’s brand new Ppl Center for a night of action headlined by a humongous tag team bout pitting the surging Dean Ambrose and “The World’s Largest Athlete” The Big Show against The Authority’s corporate demon Kane and “The Viper” Randy Orton. Supporting that contest on the undercard was a war between the United States and Russia as Mark Henry squared off with Rusev, accompanied by Lana. Yours truly was at ringside for the night’s festivities.
The arena was fairly full, which was nice to see considering this was WWE’s first stop in the area since the regular television tapings held back in the 1980s ceased. The arena was beautiful,...

The Grammy Awards may not be until next February, but the eligibility period is nearing a close. As always, Best New Artist is one of the most coveted and hotly contended races. To be eligible, artists must have released an album between Oct. 1, 2013 and Sept. 30, 2014, but not have released more than three albums in their career. Additionally, this should be the year where they broke through in a significant way. Some years, it’s easy to come up with way more than five strong candidates, but not this year. There have been a lot of new artists who have made an impression, but not that many that have been more than one-hit wonders so far… Nominations will be announced in December. Our predictions for leading contenders for Best New Artist: Sam Smith: Word of a new British crooner started to spread several months ago, then we heard him on Disclosure’s “Latch.

Ariana Grande brought a super-special guest to the VMAs - her grandmother!
