Dwayne Johnson is now an A-list actor who has immense star power. He has been in some major franchises including Fast and the Furious and Jumanji. Johnson is a big part of the audience’s interest in these franchises and their huge commercial successes. However, Johnson had to work his way up in the industry when she started in the 2000s.
Dwayne Johnson as Luke Hobbs in Fast Five
Johnson had a passion project that he wanted to star in ever since he became an actor. At the time, Johnson did not have the star power and stature big enough to pitch studios to greenlight a film. The actor had to build up his career for 15 years and even turned down a major franchise to bring his passion project to the big screen.

A New Year means lots of removals from Netflix and January 1st is looking busy, with over 100 movies set to leave the service already. Below, we’ll be keeping track of all the Netflix departures for the first month of 2024.
First, a few housekeeping notes as to how Netflix removals work before we dive in. Due to licensing agreements, shows and movies added to Netflix aren’t added forever. Instead, they’re essentially rented for a fixed period. All the shows below have their current window on Netflix ending and will likely be bound for a rival streaming service.
We list titles slightly differently from other outlets, with our listings being the actual day of removal. If you want to watch any titles scheduled to expire on January 1st, for example, you’ll need to watch by the end of December 31st.

The summer of Suits continued past Labor Day, as the legal drama set a streaming chart record for most weeks as the No. 1 overall title.
The former USA series, which streams on Netflix and Peacock, spent its 12th consecutive week at the top of Nielsen’s rankings, which go back three years. It had 2.36 billion minutes of viewing for the week of Sept. 4-10, falling by only 4 percent from the previous week. Suits‘ 12th week at No. 1 overall broke a tie with Netflix’s Ozark, which had 11 weeks at No. 1 over several seasons.
Five titles had more than a billion minutes of viewing for the week, with Netflix’s Virgin River (1.92 billion minutes of watch time) coming in second behind Suits. One Piece (1.39 billion minutes), the streaming debut of The Little Mermaid (1.37 billion) and Swat (1.04 billion) — which jumped 62 percent week to week — also crossed that threshold.

Tomorrow, “Barbie” (Warner Bros.) will make its home-viewing debut at $24.99 for rental, $29.99 for digital download, and will presumably sweep all #1 positions for weeks to come. The extent may depend on the as-yet undated PVOD arrivals of “Oppenheimer,” “Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning: Part One,” and “Sound of Freedom.”
For now, our usual chart lineup is down one list: Google Play mysteriously has the same films in the same order for more than a week. In that universe, “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” is still #1 while “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem” has yet to chart.
“Strays” Courtesy Universal Pictures
Other #1 slots reflect the ways iTunes and Vudu calculate their lists. “No Hard Feelings” (Sony), which had an early rental price reduction to $5.99 after success at $19.99, is #1 on iTunes, which calculates by transactions. Just-released R-rated comedy “Strays” (Universal) leads at Vudu, which ranks by revenue.

Four (an unusually high number) recent studio theatrical releases added PVOD home availability over the last week. No question which among them scored best — “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” (Disney) took the #1 slot on all charts.
Consumer options vary among the titles. “Indiana Jones” can immediately be digitally downloaded for $19.99. “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem” (Paramount) is $19.99 for a 48 hour rental, as is “The Last Voyage of the Demeter” (Universal). “Mutant” can be purchased for $24.99. Meanwhile, Disney released “The Boogeyman” at a $14.99 initial rental price.
The rush to open could be related to two factors — holiday viewing, but also the anticipated (but not yet confirmed) release of “Barbie” (Warner Bros.) as early as Tuesday. Presales are available on multiple sites, but none yet list a specific date.

In case you missed it, Portkey Games recently announced a new Quidditch video game called Harry Potter: Quidditch Champions. Developed by Unbroken Studios, it promises to offer “a fast-paced, competitive multiplayer game featuring the world’s most iconic magical sport.” We don’t know much else about the game beyond the info available on its Faq page, though that should change after the game’s closed test happens this weekend.
This decision isn’t a surprise. Between Hogwarts Legacy‘s success and the recently announced Harry Potter HBO series, it’s clear that WB has renewed its interest in finding new ways to shake a little more money out of the Harry Potter franchise. Actually, quite a few people were sad to learn there was no Quidditch minigame in Hogwarts Legacy, and it now certainly seems like Portkey just felt like Quidditch was worthy of a standalone gaming experience.

A year and a half after Michael K. Williams’ death, the man who sold The Wire star the drugs that killed him has pleaded guilty.
“Irvin Cartagena sold fentanyl-laced heroin in broad daylight in New York City, feeding addiction and causing tragedy,” U.S. Attorney Damian Williams of the Southern District of New York said Wednesday, regarding the the September 5, 2021 transaction in Brooklyn’s South Williamsburg neighborhood. “In doing so, he dealt the fatal dose that killed Michael K. Williams.”
In front U.S. District Judge Ronnie Abrams earlier in the day, Cartagena pleaded guilty to “one count of conspiracy to distribute and possess with intent to distribute fentanyl analogue, fentanyl, and heroin.” That plea specifically cited the death of Williams as a consequence of Cartagena’s drug slinging. Set to be sentenced later this year, Cartagena, aka “Green Eyes,” faces a mandatory minimum of five years and up to 40 years on the charges.

As the calendar flips over to 2023, Prime Video is attempting to start a new year on the right track with fresh seasons of some major originals.
Prime Videos’ list of new releases for January 2023 is highlighted by Hunters season 2 on Jan. 13. The first season of Hunters was set in 1977 and followed young Jonah Heidelbaum’s (Logan Lerman) introduction to a world of Nazi-hunting. After a lengthy wait for season 2, the fresh (and final) batch of episodes will find Jonah and friends venturing to South American to take out none other than Adolf Hitler, himself.
While Nazi-hunting undoubtedly takes up a lot of streaming space, two other Amazon original series of note arrive in January. The Rig, a supernatural thriller set on a Scottish oil rig, premieres Jan. 6. That will be followed by season 2 of fantasy role-playing animated series The Legend of Vox Machina on Jan. 20.

As timely as last night’s episode of “ESPN Sports Center,” and as riveting as a well-crafted tick-tock suspenser, “National Champions” adroitly avoids most of the pitfalls common to conventional “message movies” by raising and debating issues in the context of a solid and involving drama that can be enjoyed even by people who couldn’t tell an offside kick from a cheerleader’s cartwheel. It’s intent on exposing the inner workings of college football, but don’t expect a lot of gridiron action here. Except for a few — very few — highlight clips sprinkled here and there, the focus remains on the interactions of players, coaches, media scrums, well-heeled boosters, freelance fixers, and NCAA movers and shakers during the countdown to the fictional Snickers College Football Championship.

Michael K. Williams died earlier this month from “acute intoxication by the combined effects of fentanyl, p-fluorofentanyl, heroin and cocaine,” the NYC Office of Chief Medical Examiner said Friday. The Cme has ruled the death accidental.
The determination comes after Williams, the five-time Emmy-nominated star of The Wire, Boardwalk Empire, 12 Years a Slave and most recently Lovecraft Country, was found dead in his Brooklyn, NY, home on Monday, September 6. He was 54 years old.
A New York Police Department detective told Deadline at the time that Williams “was discovered deceased in an apartment located at 440 Kent Avenue today around 1400 hours. It’s an ongoing investigation and the medical examiner will determine the cause of death.”
The medical examiner’s office said today it would not comment further on the case.

Gerard Butler is set to reteam with “Greenland” and “Angel Has Fallen” director Ric Roman Waugh on action thriller “Kandahar.” CAA Media Finance is representing the film’s U.S. rights, and Capstone is handling international, and will present the project to buyers at the virtual Cannes Market.
Waugh will direct from a screenplay he wrote with former military intelligence officer Mitchell Lafortune, based on the latter’s experiences at the Defense Intelligence Agency in Afghanistan at the time of the Snowden leaks.
Butler stars as Tom Harris, an undercover CIA operative working in the Middle East. An intelligence leak dangerously exposes his classified mission and reveals his covert identity. Stuck in the heart of hostile territory, Harris and his translator must fight their way out of the desert to an extraction point in Kandahar, while eluding the elite special forces hunting them.

No one has ever accused a Gerard Butler action movie of being too smart, but “Angel Has Fallen” operates on such a level of half-considered logic and improbable motivations that even moderately well-mounted action can’t distract audiences from how dumb it is.
Returning for the third time to the role of Mike Banning, Butler at least addresses the threat of aging out of a surprisingly anemic landscape of C-grade movies that actually open nationwide in theaters, but director and co-writer Ric Roman Waugh (“Snitch”) seems more interested in defying his main character’s reality than substantially exploring it in this political thriller that blends the most overworked and stale ideas from “First Blood,” “The Fugitive” and even “The Bodyguard” into a watery, tasteless, unfulfilling stew.

No, you don’t need to have seen “Olympus Has Fallen” and/or “London Has Fallen” to understand the eminently disposable third chapter of the Mike Banning chronicles. It’s not that complicated: Gerard Butler is an elite Secret Service agent with a heart of gold and a face of raw meat, he’s saved the free world a couple of times over the last few years, and he’s forced to do it again. On the contrary, the only prerequisite for enjoying “Angel Has Fallen” — or at least for appreciating the essence of its potential appeal — is a fond nostalgia for old-school action movies.
You know, the steroidal stuff that Hollywood churned out back when men were men, explosions were the only special effects that mattered, and the President of the United States going into a coma wasn’t the best thing that could possibly happen to national security.

It’s kind of difficult to really pick out the best films of Dwayne Johnson’s career since he does have a few, but there are those that obviously won’t make this list like The Scorpion King, Snitch, or even Be Cool. He’s a likable character in just about any movie he’s in whether he’s a friendly guy or not, but Dwayne Johnson is by and large one of the most swiftly rising superstars in Hollywood and has kind of become the same caliber of actor that Arnold Schwarzenegger once was before he gained a career in politics. Exclusive: Another hot Cannes package: Liam Neeson, starring in Charlie Johnson in the Flames. Tarik Saleh will direct an adaptation of the Michael Ignatieff thriller novel. Script is by Justin Haythe. Michael London is producing through Groundswell Productions, along with Jawal Nga and Edward Saxon. 30West is financing. Sierra/Affinity will broker international sales and CAA and 30 West will broker U.S. rights. CAA Media Finance arranged the pic’s funding.
Neeson will play the title character, a peerless BBC war correspondent covering civil unrest in the Congo. When the death of an innocent woman shakes him to his core, he risks everything to expose the truth, only to find himself embroiled in a network of murder, corruption, and violence that forces him to question his humanity.
Neeson has as strong a global track record as anyone with a film in the Cannes market, including the Taken trilogy and most recently The Commuter.

The road to movie stardom for Dwayne Johnson is one of the unlikeliest in recent memory. A third-generation professional wrestler known the world over as “The Rock,” Johnson nabbed a supporting role in 2001’s “The Mummy Returns” and made such an impression that he starred in a successful stand-alone film, “The Scorpion King,” the very next year.
As his film career progressed, it became evident that, despite his success in action films, Johnson had a distinct flair for comedy, which he began to show off in such films as “Be Cool” (2005), “Central Intelligence” (2016), “Moana” (2016) and in his biggest-grossing film, “Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle” (2017).

However, Johnson is fully back in action hero-mode in his 2018 movie, “Rampage,” where he plays a primatologist whose beloved albino gorilla is being used in an experiment that turns him into a raging beast...

Dwayne Johnson has this remarkable ability of taking somewhat mediocre productions and making them engaging and entertaining, proving himself to be one of Hollywood’s most dependable leading men at present. Yet even his distinct charisma and unwavering affability is not enough to save Brad Peyton’s blockbuster Rampage.
Johnson plays Davis Okoye, a primatologist who shares an affinity with albino gorilla George, who he has cared for ever since the latter was an infant. George is then the victim of a genetic experiment carried out by Claire Wyden (Malin Akerman), which causes creatures to grow in both physical stature and in aggression, which alerts Agent Russell (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) as they hope to capture George and put an end to the havoc this gigantic ape is wreaking. It’s on Davis and the discredited genetic engineer Dr. Kate Caldwell (Naomie Harris) to find an antidote, while in the meantime...

Ric Roman Waugh, who was behind the underrated drama Snitch, returns with Shot Caller – a well-structured endeavour that moves freely between flashbacks and the present day, seamlessly interwoven to help tell this complex story. But while the set-up is great, it’s the pay-off that lets this title down, growing somewhat convoluted as we progress, and moving too far away from the endearing simplicity that helped to set the scene.
Initially, the narrative is that of a prisoner striving to reconnect with his family upon his release – at least that’s what it seemed to be. Nikolaj Coster-Waldau plays Jacob, imprisoned for manslaughter having been at the wheel of a car during an accident, which killed his colleague in the backseat. His wife Kate (Lake Bell) was left devastated as her husband was put away for several years, having to raise their young son on her own.

Nikolaj Coster-Waldau is terrific as a blameless family man transformed into a tattooed hard case by his time in jail following a fatal road accident
The last film by Ric Roman Waugh I caught was the fantastically improbable and overblown Snitch, about the war on drugs. My expectations here were tepid. But Shot Caller turns out to be a really taut, tense, prison-set thriller, a little like Jacques Audiard’s A Prophet and longform television such as Breaking Bad or The Wire.
Game of Thrones’ Nikolaj Coster-Waldau plays Jacob, a blameless financial trader and family man who is sent to prison for accidentally killing someone while driving through a red light. Advised by his nervy lawyer to play it tough on his first day in the yard, Jacob catastrophically gets involved in a fight with an African-American prisoner and gets befriended by an extreme white-power gang – persuaded that hanging with...

Ric Roman Waugh's latest movie, Shot Caller, explores the question of what one would do if unexpectedly sent to prison, telling the story through the perspective of Jacob, played by Game of Thrones star Nikolaj Coster-Waldau.
In order to fully immerse himself in the system, the stuntman-turned-director volunteered at the Department of Corrections in California. "I wasn't going to commit a crime to get inside," he joked. "I did it the best way I thought that could give me an unflinching look at the system [on the] inside."

For his upcoming crime thriller Shot Caller, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau put on a serious amount of muscle to play a prison inmate who gets wrapped up in a criminal enterprise behind bars -- but for one of the posters designed for the film, the handsome star bears a striking resemblance to another leading man: Dwayne Johnson.
In fact, for the Shot Caller one-sheet, it appears as though Coster-Waldau's head has been photoshopped onto Johnson's body from the poster for his crime thriller Snitch -- both of which were directed by Ric Roman Waugh.
The Game of Thrones star sat down with Et's Leanne Aguilera while promoting his upcoming film on Tuesday, and he addressed the hilarious photoshopping controversy that has gone viral over the last few days.

"Apparently it was a Canadian distributor who thought this was a great idea," Coster-Waldau, 47, said when presented with the side-by-side comparison. "Now I can finally...
