As Skidrow frontman Sebastian Bach sat down after a long day of metal rocking to enjoy some MTV, an energetic pretty boy suddenly appeared before the eyes of Bach. And all he could think was, “What the f*ck is a Bon Jovi and What the f*ck is with all those teeth?”, as smiling was not exactly considered cool amongst the metal-heads of the time. And we can’t forget Twister Sister frontman Dee Snider, who believes that he can pin point the exact moment that metal started to become less metal….when Bon Jovi smiled, creating what many like to call “happy metal”. While others say that Bon Jovi’s music brought a fresh new light to the genre causing millions of other smiles to spread throughout the world. Not being completely miserable and angry all the time was a bold controversial move in the world of rock...

For those who’ve seen Joshua Ray Walker perform, they know his voice can alternately hush and rouse a crowd. (Catch him perform “Voices” if you ever get the chance and be amazed.) The Texas songwriter delivers one of his most dynamic recorded takes on “Cuz I Love You” — a Lizzo cover that announces his new album What Is It Even?.
The rendition arrives with a music video that finds Walker flirting with gender norms. What is it even? How about a vocalist confident in who he is as an artist.

U2’s the Edge explained the chemistry behind his and Bono’s songwriting process in a new interview with Apple Music’s Zane Lowe. “It’s not like Lennon and McCartney where there’s two guys [and] the rivalry probably made them better,” he told Lowe while sitting beside Bono. “They’re also basically doing the same thing – singers and songwriters. I do a lot of music composition, but I need Bono to finish the song, so we complement each other; we don’t ever cancel each other out. It’s additive.

Plenty of media stories about Jeymes Samuel’s “The Harder They Fall” have played up the Western’s all-Black cast, with many describing the Netflix film as a “corrective” to the popular Hollywood image of an all-white Old West. But a cursory Google search will offer that this credit has been attributed to a number of other titles that came long before Samuel and even the oldest members of his all-star cast were even born.
The Western film genre is unique to a specific period and place and is, as such, instantly recognizable. The cinema helped immortalize the cowboy, rendering him, in many ways, inseparable from its cultural tradition. The cinema has also immortalized the cowboy as a white man, erasing the Black Americans who made up one-fourth of the wranglers and riders of the American frontier.

There seem to be more Russian Dolls every time that they perform on “The Masked Singer.” Indeed, we counted four of them when they nailed their cover of “24K Magic” by Bruno Mars on April 21. Their solid gold singing landed them a spot in “The Spicy 6 – The Competition Heats Up!” episode, which airs on May 5.
We’ve been fans of the Russian Dolls since they led off the Week 1 show with their cover of the Michael Jackson classic “Man in the Mirror.” They shone in Week 3 with “Wonder” by Shawn Mendes and then again in Week 6 with “Want to Want Me” by Jason Derulo.
Like you, we’ve been wondering just who is hidden inside these cumbersome costumes. So we went back and watched all four of their performances as well as the clues video packages. And we weighed up the guesses by the four judges that they were 98 Degrees or Pentatonix.

"You... belong... here..." Vertical Ent. has released the official trailer for an indie horror film from Colombia (shot and made in English) titled The Devil's Child, also known as Diavlo. The latest horror feature from filmmaker David Bohorquez. Young nurse Cherry finds herself haunted by lingering childhood trauma when she is employed at a remote estate to care for a clairvoyant and sinister man, who might just have psychic powers. Freaky. The indie horror film stars Marvens Passiano, Maria Camila Perez, Alison Sullivan, and Francisca Tevez. This looks surprisingly unimaginative and especially derivative, at least from this trailer, despite some dark, sinister shots in it. But these kind of horror films are a dime a dozen these days. Here's the official trailer (+ poster) for David Bohorquez's The Devil's Child, direct from YouTube: A young American nurse (Maria Camila Perez) finds herself haunted by childhood trauma, when she is employed...

Little Richard Penniman, whose boogie woogie blues piano laid the foundation for rock and roll, died Saturday, May 9, at 87, according to Rolling Stone. The cause of death was unknown.
Little Richard, along with Chuck Berry, Fats Domino, the Delta Cats, Sister Rosetta Tharpe, and Elvis Presley, wed blues with gospel and country for a new music genre which changed the world and how we hear it. “Tutti Frutti, “Long Tall Sally,” “Rip It Up,” all pounded out in 1956, got jukeboxes jumping, made senses reel and gave parents fits. “All the flat top cats and the dungaree dolls” swarmed the dance floors, while budding musicians around the world took notice.
Little Richard’s influence is almost beyond measure. The Beatles, Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendrix, Bob Dylan, Elton John, David Bowie, Rod Stewart, Lemmy Kilmister, and his own contemporaries, like Presley, Buddy Holly, and Bill Haley and fellow piano pounder Jerry Lee Lewis,...

U2 wrapped up their Joshua Tree 2019 tour with their first-ever show in India at Mumai’s D.Y. Patil Stadium on Sunday evening.
It was largely a standard Joshua Tree show until the encore section when Indian musical icon A. R. Rahman and his daughters joined the band to perform “Ahimsa”, a song he wrote and recorded with the band earlier this year.
“Included in this country are women, the most precious and rarest potential talent that we have,” Bono told the crowd, “and it’s 50 percent of this stadium.

Dolly Parton is celebrating a half-century of being an official Grand Ole Opry member with “Dolly Parton: 50 Years at the Opry,” a two-hour special that airs tonight on NBC. But if you want to talk about how long she’s really been associated with the Opry, she’s not bashful about noting that you can actually tag another 10 years onto that number.
“A lot of people think this is my 50th year at the Grand Ole Opry. It’s actually been 60, because the first time I got to sing on the Opry, I was 13 years old,” Parton explained at a press event before going into the auditorium to film the new special. “But then the night that I became a member after I was working with ‘The Porter Wagoner Show’ — and got to actually be a member 50 years ago this year — was one of the highlights of my whole life...

Stars: Taylor Schilling, Jackson Robert Scott, Peter Mooney, Brittany Allen, Colm Feore | Written by Jeff Buhler | Directed by Nicholas McCarthy
The third horror film from director Nicholas McCarthy, The Prodigy is an entry in the creepy kid genre typified by the likes of Orphan (2009) and Joshua (2007), aka The Devil’s Child. As such it’s something of a mixed bag, delivering a handful of genuinely nasty moments, but let down by a frustrating script that completely ignores the premise implied in the title.
Taylor Schilling (Orange Is The New Black) and Peter Mooney play Sarah and John Blume, a middle-class Pennysylvania couple whose longed-for child is born at the exact same moment that police shoot and kill Hungarian-speaking serial killer Edward Scarka (Paul Fauteux) in nearby Ohio. Eight years later, their young son Miles (Jackson Robert Scott) is attending school for gifted children, after having grown up with an unusually high Iq,...

Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of film critics two questions and publishes the results on Monday. (The answer to the second, “What is the best film in theaters right now?”, can be found at the end of this post.)
This week’s question: In honor of Greta Gerwig’s “Lady Bird,” what is the best coming-of-age movie ever made?
Siddhant Adlakha (@SidizenKane), Birth.Movies.Death.
While it may not fit the western paradigm of a traditional coming of age film (neither a high school setting nor teenage angst or confusion find themselves the focus), “Lion” holds the distinction of being a rare modern movie that gets to the root of key questions of dual identity, questions that will only become more prominent in the age of globalism. It’s the most extreme version of having your feet in two cultures; Saroo Brierley (Sunny Pawar, Dev Patel) finds himself...

It’s the sneaky Marvel/DC crossover no-one expected! Yes, with the presence of The Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan) and someone playing The Flash the stakes couldn’t be…. Sorry, we’re now being told that this is actually the latest trailer for Meryl Streep’s new family drama/comedy Ricki And The Flash. No superheroes required, unless you count The Streepster herself. Which we do. Jonathan Demme is behind the camera for this one, directing a Diablo Cody script about a rocker who essentially gave up everything for her chance at musical stardom. She’s used to being on tour, but when her long-suffering ex-husband Pete (Kevin Kline) calls to say their daughter Julie (Streep’s real-life spawn Mamie Gummer) has been jilted by her husband-to-be, she’s forced to confront the realities of the family she left behind. As we continue on, I need to once again clarify that if this list was “Joshua Gaul’s 50 Favorite Movie Musicals,” it’d be a quite a different list. But, if my tastes determined what is definitive, I’d be asking you all to consider Aladdin as a brilliant piece of filmmaking and wax nostalgic about my love for Batteries Not Included and Flight of the Navigator (not for the musicals list, of course). Much to my dismay, my tastes are not universal. I’d like to think my research methods are.

As we are full-on in the Lent season, our definitive list will focus on films about religion or some aspect of it. The #1 qualification to be on this list is to deliberately focus on religion, a religious figure, or have the presence of a religion/faith as an integral plot point. For example, most of Luis Bunuel’s films can be viewed as attacks on the church, but they aren’t literally about Christianity; therefore, they won’t be included. So, on this list, we’ll look at as many different faiths as possible (though, there are obviously a lot more movies about Christianity than any other religion). We’ll even dabble into cults and sects that don’t really exist. Final rule: no documentaries. We’re keeping this fictional.

My first real attempt at understanding the brilliance that was Stanley Kubrick came in my freshman year of college, when I wrote a research paper on 2001: A Space Odyssey for an English class. After all that work, I only received a B and found myself more confused than ever. But there it was – the spark that Stanley Kubrick’s work produces. Kubrick’s best films were experiences; it’s impossible to “half-watch” one of his many masterpieces. And that’s what the movies on this list do. They take you on an odyssey of visual wonder, psychological tremors, and expect you to do as much work as the people involved in the making of the films. Yet, in the end, Kubrick’s films didn’t feel like homework. They felt like vacations to a world where deep thought is a welcome respite.

Whatever you may have thought of January Jones’s portrayal of The White Queen/Emma Frost in superhero blockbuster X-Men: First Class, there’s no denying the actress’s versatility. She’s been nominated for a Golden Globe, an Emmy and a Satellite Award for her performance as Betty Draper in AMC’s period drama Mad Men, had supporting roles in action blockbusters like Unknown and the upcoming Good Kill, appeared in raunchy comedy American Wedding and even toplined her own Western (Sweetwater). Now, Jones is set to add another genre to her already strong resume: horror. The actress just signed on to topline a supernatural thriller called The Shuddering.
Jones stars as a woman who returns to the town where she first began to experience strange, horrific visions. When she digs into the town’s history and records of the visions, she begins to uncover a mystery far more...

Get ready to see a different side of Sam Rockwell. Well known for his goofy charm in movies such as this summer's "The Way Way Back" and as a suave bad guy in "Charlie's Angels" and "Iron Man 2," Rockwell's role in this weekend's indie "A Single Shot" could come as a shock. He plays John Moon, a West Virginian man who finds himself in a spot of trouble after he accidentally murders a young woman while hunting in the woods. Soon, he's the one being hunted.
We caught up with Rockwell prior to the movie's release, chatting on his trademark dance moves, the thick West Virginia accent he adopted for the role and the power of a good beard.
Talk to me a little bit about "A Single Shot." You're known for playing a very different kind of role than the very countrified, rough character in John Moon.

The Bates Motel star's new movie, The Conjuring, is a spine-chilling story of paranormal phenomena. She talks about belief and scepticism, and the maternal theme that connects her roles
Last night Vera Farmiga watched her new movie, a cheerfully manipulative and highly effective shocker, with an audience for the first time. "To me the masculine screams were a riot," she says. "They were just unabashed. Usually there's a self-awareness to male laughter, an apologetic giddiness, but not here. That was a different kind of screaming – unprompted, like the sounds were being ripped out of them. And I'd seen the movie before, so I knew when to look at the audience instead of the screen. Just every time – 'Aaaarrgghh!'" That effort reignites her cough. The chuckles become hacking little rasps, and she guzzles more herbal tea.

It wasn't just viewers who were scared out of their wits by "The Conjuring" this weekend; it was the big studios as well (save perhaps Warner Bros., which released "The Conjuring"). After all, this summer has seen several supposedly surefire blockbusters -- movies with big stars, big action sequences, and big fan bases from previous installments -- do big belly flops at the multiplex. (That includes Warners' own "The Hangover Part III.") And then here comes a horror flick with a modest budget (just $20 million), a restrictive R rating, no big names, no familiar title from a pre-existing property, and it opens at No. 1 with an estimated $41.5 million, setting a record for an original R-rated horror movie. And this on a weekend with three other wide-release movies opening, all of them more heavily touted.
To be sure, most pundits felt those films would be weak performers, but no one guessed...

Ya know, Vera Farmiga is due for having another on-screen nervous breakdown. After all, it's been some time since "Orphan" and "Joshua" and "Source Code" and all those other movies in which she's constantly freaking out (usually about her kids or Jake Gyllenhaal).
Vera teams up with Patrick Wilson to play a pair of married demonologists (never a boring dinner conversation there!) in "The Conjuring," the latest horror outing from director James Wan ("Saw," "Insidious" and that movie where ventriloquist dummies come to life or something).
It's actually Lili Taylor who takes center stage in the first teaser trailer for the film, playing a woman who's obviously never seen a James Wan movie as she ventures into a deep, dark basement after a bunch of framed photographs fall off the wall on the staircase. Always a good idea, Lili, always.
Anyway, things get spooky, as they tend to do in these things.

Dallas Roberts has his work cut out for him in the third season of The Walking Dead between working for the governor, sipping on tea, and conducting weird experiments on the undead. Is the seemingly lone scientist type in this post apocalyptic world working for mans best interests or has he got some other sinister plan up his sleeve? Originally from Houston, Roberts attended Juilliard and currently lives in New York. He was nominated for a Drama Desk award for his work in the Off-Broadway play "Nocturne". He has appeared in movies such as Joshua and 3:10 to Yuma and on television shows like "Rubicon" and "The Good Wife.". How did you get the role of Milton in the Walking Dead? Yeah, I am an actor and I audition for a ton of stuff. It was another one that we auditioned for and it was a known...

We're not familiar with Rides.tv, but they seem to appreciate horror so we thought we'd pass on the news that Fourth Wall Studios' new Dark Wall anthology is airing there, beginning with Installment #1, "Whispers."

We just got hold of the trailer and some production stills from Terminal Descent, a new horror flick starring the tough and talented Tara Cardinal, and all I can say is: See what happens when you don't pay attention to "No Trespassing" signs?
Directed by David R. Williams and starring Cardinal, Alicen Holden, Justin Irwin and Patricia M. Dunn, Terminal Descent focuses on a group of urban exploration enthusiasts (aka curious young thrill seekers who should pay more attention to "No Trespassing" signs) that get in over their head when they explore a mammoth abandoned train station and discover it to be the resting place of some very nasty, very hungry creatures.
Cardinal is one of the hardest working and, thanks to her glorious red tresses, most identifiable actresses on today's indie horror scene, yet she's almost unrecognizable here. As Ikari, the group's leader, Cardinal displays her usual commanding presence,...

Though Phillip Phillips and Jessica Sanchez will surely super-sing and hyper-emote their way through tonight's Top 2 performance show, American Idol's eleventh season has already left a trail of thoroughly professional, if not legendary performances. Fortunately, we''ve counted up the 11 that really, really ruled, and I'll tell you a secret: The top two performances on this list may be the two best in the history of the series -- aside from my darling Melinda Doolittle's "My Funny Valentine," of course. They're an astonishing pair of clips, and I hope reality competition scientists study them with microscopes and applause for decades.
