Fun trivia: one of the working titles for Wes Craven's 1996 slasher satire "Scream" was "Scary Movie." Filmmaker Keenan Ivory Wayans got wind of this trivia, and decided in 2000 to make a film called "Scary Movie" intended to satirize the popularity of "Scream." The late 1990s were a curious time in popular culture, as there weren't too many dominant horror trends. Popular music was beginning to comment on its own self-awareness (see: "Flagpole Sitta") and irony became ironic. Self-reflection went from a healthy Socratic exercise into a loop of eternal recurrence. By 2000, we became so busy commenting on our own commentaries, that it was hard to see where we started. This is where "Scary Movie" dropped in.
Make no mistake, "Scary Movie" is unfunny, as are its many sequels. They're cheap, homophobic, and vulgar. Wayans took his model from spoof filmmakers like Zucker/Abrahams/Zucker, but aimed to make something...

A list of new streaming releases on Netflix, what a concept!
Netflix’s list of new releases for April 2022 is highlighted by the return of one of the great sci-fi comedies ever. Natasha Lyonne is set to return as the temporally displaced Nadia on Russian Doll season 2 on April 20. The first season of the show premiered in 2019 and appeared to tell a rather complete story about one Brooklyn woman’s experiences of dying over and over again. But Lyonne and fellow producers Leslye Headland and Amy Poehler still have some story to tell. Netflix is undoubtedly very happy to let them continue to tell it.

In the days leading up to the Fourth of July, New York governor Andrew Cuomo took to social media urging state residents to avoid indoor parties and large gatherings. But it seems folks didn’t listen and after seeing pictures of packed beaches and stocked bars surface online, a second wave of coronavirus-induced quarantine and social distancing seems closer than ever before.

Every year, movies are being produced at faster rates and in greater quantity, and that’s thanks – in part – to streamers like Netflix. Because of their business strategy, customers can now watch thousands of films for the same price as a single cinema ticket. As such, the entertainment appetite of the American public has been growing stronger with each passing season. To that end, here’s an overview of the best new movies coming to Netflix next month.
First off, we got science fiction and fantasy. Fans of visiting other worlds will be in for a treat in July, as Netflix will be adding Cloud Atlas to its library. Directed by the Wachowski siblings – the same ones who created the now-infamous Matrix franchise – this time-traveling epic follows the stories of a handful of reincarnating souls who live their different yet similar lives across several centuries.
Up next we got acclaimed classics,...

How does Netflix determine which titles leave and which enter its dauntingly large library? Do they carefully analyze viewing statistics and find content that caters to our interests? Or do they simply throw an immense amount of content at the wall and watch what sticks?
The answer is probably a mix of both. Like most entertainment companies, Netflix knows full well the potential of mathematics, but it also respects the creative spirit. As such, some new additions may have been carefully chosen, and others not. In any case, here’s an overview of the 81 new movies and TV shows headed to the platform this coming week.
Let’s begin with the basics. One of the most inoffensive yet well-crafted Hollywood films arriving is Donnie Brasco. Produced in 1997, it stars now-legendary actor Johnny Depp in one of his first lead roles ever, and tells the story of an undercover cop who...

The summer movie season, as we usually know it, isn’t happening this year, with few big releases planning to drop over the next couple of months, even if cinemas are just starting to reopen. Instead, then, it’s falling on Netflix and the various other streaming services to pull their weight and give movie lovers a range of new content to feast on. Thankfully, July isn’t looking too shabby for original films and TV, not to mention lots of classics or underrated gems appearing on all the usual sites.
Of course, Netflix has the most original output coming across next month. TV fans, in particular, have got much to look forward to, including season 2 of The Umbrella Academy. In fact, it’s a good month for fantasy series based off comic books all-round, as we’ve also got Arthurian retelling Cursed and super-powered action show Warrior Nun coming as well.

It’s been a little while since we really got to see DJ Qualls in anything really significant. At one time he seemed on the rise since he was making a lot of appearances in teenage movies and films that were about saving the world. But in the past few years it doesn’t seem like he’s done much. In fact between TV and film it really seems like Z Nation and Delta Farce were the last notable appearances he’s made in quite some time. He’s had roles in several other shows and movies but his presence really hasn’t been the same

Bill Engvall in The Neighbour
Marcus Dunstan's The Neighbour, which screened at Frightfest and opens in the UK this weekend, is a dark horror tale which will make you question how much you know about the people next door. What will shock some viewers more than the horrors in the basement is the fact that it stars popular Us comedian Bill Engvall, better known for films like Delta Farce and Catching Faith. Let's just say that his performance here is a little bit different.
Bill was keen to talk about the film but, somewhere in the chain of people making the arrangements, there was confusion about time zone conversion. We ended up speaking just after 7am. Knowing that many actors are night owls, I apologised, but he laughed. "Honey, when you get to my age, this is sleeping in." He told me that he's really excited about this film because the role is.

In honor of That’s My Boy, a comedy that pairs together Adam Sandler and Andy Samberg as father and son, let’s imagine other pairs of actors who would make for dynamic father/son duos. And we’re not gonna just put two actors together and let you imagine the rest. We’ve got plot summaries too. So now I’ll just sit by the phone and wait for agents and Hollywood executives to green-light this gold.

Here are the Top 7 Actors Who Should Play Father & Son in a film.
7. Christopher Plummer (“Priest”) & Michael Fassbender (“Prometheus”)
Tentative Title: “Ice Cream Men”
Reason: Fassbender plays the world’s biggest Cher fan, who earns his keep by driving an ice cream truck for a picky boss (played by Jackie Chan) to the different towns of Death Valley.

Rating: PG-13
Release Date: June 3, 2011 (Chicago)
Plot: The story of a midwestern family in the 1950′s, and a boy’s (McCracken) struggle to connect with his father (Pitt).
Who’S It For?: Fans of the Days of Heaven and Thin Red Line filmmaker shouldn’t need any persuasion to invest two and half-hours into the latest visual opus from Terrence Malick. Moviegoers unfamiliar with his work should wear their art house fan caps and be prepared for a spiritual experience. Religious audiences are a curious gamble, as the movie does have a lot of elements concerning god and creation, but the movie doesn’t aggressively associate itself with any particular religion or definite meaning.

Photo: Warner Bros. I was completely out of the loop when it came to Ballistic: Ecks vs. Sever, a film predominantly known at this point as the worst reviewed movie of the last decade by RottenTomatoes standards. So, when I decided I would follow in the footsteps of my previous look at Skyline and regularly take a look back at movies considered to be among the worst ever that I had not yet seen, there was no better place to start.
In short, yes, this is a bad film. Terrible in fact. Is it the worst? That's all relative to the discussion. Worst in what way? Plot? Characters? Execution? Entertainment? In all honesty, this is a film I would consider a perfect entry in a new age of grindhouse. All I could think of while watching the inexplicable amount of explosions, lack of story and silly predicaments was of Robert Rodriguez...

A friend who shares my passion for bad movies sent along this hysterical list from The Awl by Robert Lanham entitled "The Lowest Rated Movies in the Netflix Categories I'm Least Likely to Watch." To be honest, I'm not entirely sure how Lanham found these movies: I know how to search within different genres on Netflix, but not how to cross-search multiple genres at the same time. But I'm a bit excited by his discoveries, and I got a crack out of his list, which compares the films' official Netflix summaries with user comments from actual viewers. For instance, here's the entry for the movie "Retardead" (not a typo), low-rated in the "mad scientists" genre:
Netflix Summary: "Mad scientist Dr. Stern is turning students into super-smart cannibalistic zombies, and the local cops are too busy chasing a sex fiend to stop the flesh-eating ghouls. Fortunately, Stern's nemesis, FBI agent Susan Hannigan,...

Lisa Soltau was living in Seattle when her friend Bonnie Gillespie sent her a book she had written called "Casting Qs," a compilation of interviews with casting directors. "I read it and I absolutely loved all the aspects of the job," says Soltau. "I loved the entertainment industry and movies and television. The process of casting sounded wonderful."She called one of the two casting offices in Seattle and ended up working as an intern there for about six months. But the CD told her she should move to New York or Los Angeles if she really wanted to pursue a career in casting. "I picked L.A. because I had lived there once for about three years and I thought it would be easier to acclimate there," Soltau says. "Plus I wanted to work on 'Six Feet Under,' which was airing at the time.

Shrek Forever After debuted far, far below the mighty starts of some of its predecessors, grossing $70.8 million on approximately 9,500 screens at 4,359 locations, which was the broadest launch ever for an animated movie. Shrek the Third still holds the record for highest-grossing animated opening with $121.6 million, followed by Shrek 2 at $108 million and The Simpsons Movie at $74 million. Shrek Forever After ranks fourth on that list, although, in terms of estimated attendance, it would barely make the Top 20. Audience erosion was to be expected for Shrek Forever After, given the historic difficulty in maintaining attention for a blockbuster franchise over time combined with the mixed reception for Shrek the Third. However, opening 41 percent lower than the last movie despite the 3D ticket price boost was alarmingly severe. In terms of attendance, the slip was even more extreme: down 59 percent. Shrek Forever After played at a record number of 3D sites (2,373), which accounted for 61 percent of business.

On Friday, Shrek Forever After grabbed an estimated $20.8 million on approximately 9,500 screens at 4,359 locations, easily leading the day but debuting closer to Kung Fu Panda than its Shrek brethren. The fourth Shrek's release included a record number of 3D locations (2,373) and a record number of IMAX locations (194), but how much they contributed is unavailable as of this writing. Without a 3D boost, Kung Fu Panda made $20.3 million on its first day, while Shrek the Third generated $38.4 million on its first day and went on to break the animated opening weekend record with $121.6 million. Shrek 2's first Friday was also greater than Shrek Forever After, grossing $28.3 million after opening on a Wednesday. The first Shrek bagged $11.6 million on its first day back in 2001. Should Shrek Forever After follow Shrek the Third's pattern, its opening weekend would come in at over $65 million. Iron Man 2 was second on Friday with an estimated $7.5 million,...

What's that old cable TV movie called, Things You Can Tell Just By Looking At Her? Sometimes that applies to movies in general. For example, the upcoming crime caper, Takers, does not look like it will have a major impact on the industry.
Here's why we say that: It's from Screen Gems, and expecting a great film from Screen Gems is kind of like expecting the greatest meal of your life at Carl's Jr. Then, Takers was pushed from spring into summer. Why isn't that a good move? Because Screen Gems has put it up against Robin Hood, one week after Iron Man 2. The second weekend in May is usually a graveyard for films like this. Witness Next Day Air, Delta Farce, Georgia Rule, and Just My Luck, each released in this same slot over the past few years.
Then there's the cast. I like Idris Elba and Matt Dillon can be solid,...

Here’s a math quiz: Blue Collar Comedy Tour + Zombie attacks = ? If you ran the other way screaming before answering that question, I would not recommend subjecting yourself to the latest direct-to-dvd schlock Trailer Park of Terror, a horror-comedy that pits a Christian outreach group against the demonic forces of a haunted trailer park. Is it still too late to go watch Delta Farce instead?...

Christina Ricci, Owen Benjamin, Bill Engvall, Nadine Velazquez and Cedric the Entertainer are set to join Scott Marshall’s upcoming comedy “All’s Faire in Love,” according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Benjamin, who recently starred in “The House Bunny,” will play a drama school grad who becomes the fetch boy for his new Renaissance theater group. Things seem to improve when he meets a Faire virgin (Ricci), although his colleagues threaten to interrupt their romance.
Also on board are Ann-Margret, Louise Griffiths and Matthew Lillard. Marshall is directing a script by Robert A. White.
Originally, the film was titled “Ye Olde Times,” with Jack Black attached to star as a professor. Black’s role is now in the hands of Cedric the Entertainer.

The first immensely unfunny viral video for the upcoming Mall Cop movie has been unearthed. In the movie, Kevin James stars as mall security guard Paul Blart and when the mall is overtaken by a gang of organized crooks, it's up to him to save the day. We've neglected to ever mention Mall Cop before today because I much prefer the Seth Rogen mall security comedy Observe and Report instead. And this video proves how terribly unfunny and unentertaining this version will be. The only enjoyable part of watching this was all the cool skating footage at the beginning, and the moment Kevin James steps in, it's instantly boring. This really looks like it'll be the worst comedy since Delta Farce, so don't waste your time. Watch the viral teaser for Mall Cop: [flv:http://bitcast-a.bitgravity.com/firstshowing/mallcopviral.flv http://bitcast-a.bitgravity.com/firstshowing/mallcopviral.jpg 400 226] Paul Blart: Mall Cop is directed by Steve Carr, of Next Friday, Dr. Dolittle 2, Daddy...

According to the NY Times, Ben Stiller's upcoming Hollywood satire/action comedy, Tropic Thunder is going to be boycotted—but not by Larry The Cable Guy fans angry that the movie bears too close a resemblance to Delta Farce. Instead, a coalition of disability groups plans to boycott Tropic Thunder because a joke movie within that movie is offensive, and they don't understand satire. Or something. From the NY Times: “Not only might it happen, it will happen,” Timothy P. Shriver, chairman of the Special Olympics, said of the expected push for a boycott. Speaking by phone, Mr. Shriver said he planned to be in Los Angeles with representatives of his group and others to picket the movie’s premiere on Monday evening in this city’s Westwood district. A particular sore point has been the film’s repeated use of the term “retard” in referring to a character,...

There's very little doubt about what movie will have the longest lines next weekend. The Dark Knight may break the all-time opening weekend record. Then again, it might not, if a lot of people, believing it will break the opening weekend record, don't want to screw with the long lines. Maybe they'll stay away completely, or maybe, having spent all that time in line just to see sold out theaters for The Dark Knight, they'll see something else instead.

In the press notes for Larry the Cable Guy's latest comedy, his co-stars are quoted at length describing the constant hilarity they experienced on the set. Unfortunately for filmgoers, little of that fun has made its way into the finished product, which makes his previous effort, Delta Farce, seem a classic by comparison. The aptly named Witless Protection opened Friday without being screened in advance for the snobbish press.
Apparently seeking to fill the gaping cinematic void left by the untimely passing of Jim Varney (Ernest), the rotund Southern comedian again is playing a yokel, a deputy sheriff who attends to such duties as resolving a domestic dispute between a man and his horse.
When Larry encounters the unusual sight of a beautiful high-society woman (Ivana Milicevic) being escorted by a group of Men in Black types, he decides that she must be being held against her will. He takes it upon himself to save the day by kidnapping the woman himself and winds up being pursued by a team of FBI agents led by the slow-burning Yaphet Kotto (making a welcome return to the big screen after an absence of more than a decade).
The resulting Midnight Run scenario -- Kotto plays the same character he did in that 1988 comedy -- finds the mismatched duo forming an unlikely bond while becoming embroiled in a complex adventure involving a crooked wealthy tycoon (Peter Stormare, sporting perhaps the worst British accent ever) and the kung fu fighting leader (Eric Roberts) of his security team Private Maximum Security, or PMS for short.
Director-screenwriter Charles Robert Carner's script includes such gemlike dialogue exchanges as: "Are you insane? No, I'm Larry" and "Do you think he's attempting subterfuge? Or, he's trying to fool us."
Needless to say, much of the humor revolves around Larry's copious repertoire of gross bodily functions and his massive girth, the latter of which is showcased in his landmark, first (albeit, thankfully PG-13) nude scene.
In an illustration of the alternative universe of comedy films, Jenny McCarthy plays Larry's loving girlfriend, showcasing her estimable physical assets in a variety of revealing costumes.
At least a fright-wigged Joe Mantegna, delivering an execrable cameo as a whacked-out doctor, has a good excuse for his presence; the writer-director is one of his former film students.

Parallel Entertainment Pictures has acquired film rights to novelist James Sallis' series of Lew Griffin crime novels.
The novels center on Griffin, a New Orleans-based literature professor and former private investigator who works to unravel missing-persons cases while battling his own personal demons. The series includes such titles as Long Legged Fly, Moth, Black Hornet, Eye of the Cricket, Bluebottle and Ghost of a Flea.
Sallis is no stranger to Hollywood, as his novel Drive recently was acquired by Universal Pictures for producer Marc Platt.
Parallel principal J.P. Williams and the company's Alan Blomquist are developing the series as feature film adaptations. Parallel head of development Jennifer Novak is overseeing.
Williams said he is hoping to bring back the tradition of an ongoing detective movie series and already is discussing the series with actors.
Parallel recently financed and produced the features Delta Farce and Larry the Cable Guy: Health Inspector, both distributed by Lionsgate. The company is in production on Witless Protection, starring Larry the Cable Guy and Jenny McCarthy.
Sallis is repped by APA.

With four new wide releases entering the marketplace this weekend, for the most part moviegoers in North America only had eyes for Sony's Spider-Man 3 as everyone's favorite webslinger left theaters with an estimated $60 million on its sophomore frame, off a relatively modest 60% from its staggering record breaking debut of $151.1 million. The third installment based on the Marvel Comics character has racked up a riveting estimate of $242.1 million in 10 days.
On the international stage, the Tobey Maguire starrer pulled in an estimated $85.5 million during the weekend, advancing the cume to $380 million, and combined with domestic for a worldwide boxoffice tally of an amazing $622.1 million for the Sam Raimi-helmed feature.
Of the weekend's new arrivals, 20th Century Fox's 28 Weeks Later, from Fox Atomic, had the best showing. The sci-fi thriller is an apocalyptic sequel to 28 Days Later, a story about a deadly virus that infects London, and easily captured the second spot with a somewhat disappointing estimate of $10 million from 2,303 theaters. The R-rated 28 Weeks, from director Juan Carlos Fresnadillo and starring Robert Carlyle, opened near the first film's $10.1 million debut, but Days accomplished that feat with just 1,260 theaters.
In a counterprogramming move Universal's Georgia Rule put in its bid for female moviegoers this weekend, but the R-rated drama failed to generate much interest at the boxoffice with a third-place finish and an estimate of a weak $5.9 million from 2,523 sites. Lindsay Lohan, Jane Fonda and Felicity Huffman star in the Morgan Creek production, which was directed by industry veteran Garry Marshall. As projected, the audience was largely older females.
Holding up nicely in the fourth slot -- thanks to positive word of mouth -- was Paramount's Disturbia, which slipped a meager 18% in its fifth weekend to scare up an estimated $4.8 million. Produced by DreamWorks and Montecito Pictures, the PG-13 film has collected an estimated $66.3 million so far.
Lionsgate's Delta Farce didn't provide much firepower at the boxoffice on its debut this weekend as the comedy marched into the fifth spot with an estimated $3.5 million from 1,931 theaters. Not surprisingly, the PG-13 picture, starring Larry the Cable Guy, Bill Engvall and DJ Qualls and helmed by C.B.

Right now, the boxoffice belongs to Spider-Man 3, and after destroying every record in sight with its $151.1 million opening weekend, the webslinger is on track to continue his triumphal march. Given that schools aren't yet out for the summer, the Sony Pictures release lost a little momentum during the week, but it should rebound this weekend.
The previous opening-weekend record holder, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest, dropped 54% in its second weekend back in July, picking up $62.4 million after having bowed to $135.6 million. But even if
Spider-Man dropped 55%, it still would take in $64 million, so it's a safe bet to enjoy another bonanza.
Of the weekend's new arrivals, the one with the best chance of posting a solid number is 20th Century Fox's apocalyptic sequel 28 Weeks Later. Universal Pictures' femme-centric Georgia Rule might give it some competition as it bids for older women, but Lionsgate Films' Delta Farce and The Ex, from MGM and the Weinstein Co., probably are fated to be footnotes in the ongoing story of Spider-Man's boxoffice domination.
28 Weeks is looking to attract some of the same genre fans who rushed to see Spider-Man 3 on opening weekend, so if that segment of the audience has had its fill of Spidey and his assorted nemeses, the ongoing tale of a deadly virus wrecking havoc on London could be just the ticket.

TBS has given a pilot script order to a half-hour comedy from Bill Engvall, one of the Blue Collar Comedy Tour comedians, and veteran TV writer Michael Leeson. Engvall also would star in the untitled project, portraying the father at the center of the family comedy. The project would be multicamera and shot in front of a live audience, which would mark a first for TBS. Engvall and Leeson are writing the script. They also would executive produce the project with Engvall's manager, J.P. Williams. Engvall co-starred in Blue Collar Comedy Tour: The Movie and its sequels as well as the sketch-comedy series Blue Collar TV. He also appeared on fellow Blue Collar comedian Jeff Foxworthy's comedy series The Jeff Foxworthy Show. Engvall next appears on the big screen in Delta Farce.
