Batman Is In The Bush-Lovin' Eye Of The Beholder

25 July 2008 11:39 AM, PDT | From avclub.com | See recent The AV Club news

There's an Op-Ed in the Wall Street Journal today in which the writer tries to make the case that Batman is obviously a stand-in for George W. Bush (still president of America)--which, let's face it, is definitely true because [insert joke about how they both have "W"s in their names...oh wait]: A cry for help goes out from a city beleaguered by violence and fear: A beam of light flashed into the night sky, the dark symbol of a bat projected onto the surface of the racing clouds . . . Oh, wait a minute. That's not a bat, actually. In fact, when you trace the outline with your finger, it looks kind of like . . . a "W." There seems to me no question that the Batman film "The Dark Knight," currently breaking every box office record in history, is at some level a paean...

Avid Knight Fans Become Critics' Jokers

25 July 2008 10:27 AM, PDT | From Studio Briefing | See recent Studio Briefing news

Newspaper critics who failed to shower The Dark Knight with undiluted praise have themselves been deluged with sometimes ferocious criticism from the film's fans, Los Angeles Times columnist Patrick Goldstein observed today (Friday). Goldstein, who says that he himself admires the film, notes that the latest critic to feel the heat is the Wall Street Journal's Joe Morgenstern. (Most reviews of the movie appeared last Wednesday or Thursday, in sync with the early release of the film in many cities; Morgenstern's appeared on Friday, the "official" release date.) Morgenstern told Goldstein, "I've gotten 250 or 300 e-mails, almost all with the vilest, most abusive language you could possibly imagine. I was stunned. These people aren't just discourteous. They're insane." The abusive attacks on Morgenstern spilled over onto other entertainment websites and blogs. "I write for an educated readership and usually the responses to my reviews are courteous and collegial," he remarked. "But this was really ugly. It did feel like a mob."

$300 Million In 10 (K)Nights?

25 July 2008 10:27 AM, PDT | From Studio Briefing | See recent Studio Briefing news

Warner Bros.' The Dark Knight is taking aim at another box-office record, hoping to reach $300 million in domestic ticket sales faster than any other film. Today's (Friday) Daily Variety observed that the movie "has a real shot" at doing so by the end of the weekend, thereby hitting the $300-million mark in 10 days. The current record is held by last year's Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest, which reached $300 million in 16 days. Star Wars -- Episode III: Revenge of the Sith did it in 17 days and Spider-Man 3 in 19. The chances of The Dark Knight remaining a superforce at the box office this weekend appear to be enhanced by mediocre tracking for the films that are making their debut this weekend, including the new X-Files sequel and the comedy, Step Brothers. "Everyone's playing for No. 2 this weekend," Sony marketing chief Jeff Blake told the Los Angeles Times. Moreover, some analysts have noted that a large percentage of moviegoers who bought tickets for the Batman film earlier in the week were return customers. The film grossed a phenomenal $24.5 million on Monday, $20.9 million on Tuesday and $18.4 million on Wednesday, to bring its total gross on Wednesday to $222.1 million. Assuming that the film earned $15-18 million on Thursday, it would need only to do about 40 percent percent of the business it did last weekend between today and Sunday to hit $300 million in 10 days.

Christian Bale: Temper, Temper

24 July 2008 11:50 PM, PDT | From GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news

Surely, this was the most unusual movie related story of the week: Christian Bale, during The Dark Knight's unprecedented box office blitzkrieg, arrested for assaulting his mother and sister. Now we're finding out more, both about the incident and other instances in which Bale's temper may have gotten the best of him.

The New York Daily News reports that Bale's older sister, Sharon, allegedly asked the star for $200,000 so she could raise her three children a little easier. But the story goes that Bale refused the offer to hand over the loot and the fight broke out over that.

During that fight, and here's where it gets murky for Christian, he is accused of pushing and shoving Sharon and their mother, who is 61. Now, according to source close to the case, Bale was provoked when his mother began insulting the actor's wife, Sandra Sibi Blazic.

What in the hell is going on here?

Box-Office Oracle: Jul. 25 - Jul. 27, 2008

24 July 2008 9:29 PM, PDT | From Rope Of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news

#1 movie predicted correctly: 1 Weeks in a Row 1. The Dark Knight It's horn tooting time! My favorite time of the week, when I get to correctly predict everything under the sun including the results of the 2008 presidential election (Obama by 8%). Now, as for this film we clearly have to ding it because everyone saw it last weekend. So it comes down to return visitors and folks who were shut out last weekend. I'm calling for a 54% drop. Two percentage points either direction wouldn't surprise me. Estimate: $72.8 million 2. Step Brothers It will do better than it should because people are starved for comedy. All that Dark Knight grit has people thirsting for laughs. Curses, now I've used both "starved" and "thirsting" in the same paragraph. That's just poor form. Estimate: $24.7 million 3. The X-Files: I Want to Believe It will do worse than the 1998 version for one simple reason: It's been ten years.

Fearless Forecast - 'Dark Knight' Closes in on $300 Million

24 July 2008 11:41 AM, PDT | From GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news

Honestly, unless Harry Potter were opening this weekend, I don't think there's another movie left on the entire 2008 depth chart that could supplant The Dark Knight as the number one film this weekend. Crowds will be smaller, but there will still be crowds. However, this is a much better opportunity for people who wouldn't dream of hitting an event this big on opening weekend to take the plunge.

We've been following the box office performance of The Dark Knight, and it has a very real chance of hitting $300 million in ten days. That's not something we could ever think about before this past week. No movie has made $300 million in two weeks, and only four films have ever done that in less than three weeks. Hell, by the end of week three, The Dark Knight might be at $385 million.

How much money are we really talking about? Look at it

Good Knight! Another Record Falls

24 July 2008 10:36 AM, PDT | From Studio Briefing | See recent Studio Briefing news

Warner Bros.' The Dark Knight dealt another Kerplow! to a box-office record Tuesday when it crossed the $200-million mark in ticket sales in five days -- the fastest any film has ever reached that milestone. Three films had previously tied for the record, but it had taken each of them eight days to get there. (They were: Spider-Man 2; Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest; and Star Wars Episode 3: Revenge of the Sith.) The film has been posting remarkable weekday grosses -- $24.5 million on Monday and $20.9 million on Tuesday. As of Tuesday, its total gross stood at $203.77 million. Meanwhile, Dark Knight producer Charles Roven has told USA Today that he's "scratching my head" over the results. "I've been doing this for a while," he told the newspaper. "I made my first film in 1983. I've had what I thought was a lot of success but never anything like this."

Christian Bale Calls Family Dispute a 'Deeply Personal Matter'

Bale spent four hours in a London police station on Tuesday and was released pending further inquiry. He denies the allegations and cooperated voluntarily, according to a statement released by his lawyers. Dances With The Arthouse: An Arthouse Flick That's Buh-buh-buh- buh-buh-buh-buh-buh-bad to the Bone

24 July 2008 7:27 AM, PDT | From fantasymoguls.com | See recent Fantasy Moguls news

To no one's surprise, The Dark Knight took the American box office hostage and cracked all kinds of records last weekend. Records are made to be beaten, and the Hollywood film industry has always given itself the benefit of the doubt by counting box-office in terms of raw dollars rather than tickets sold. What amazes me the most is how so many people can still get so enthused and excited by new box-office "records," when in fact they are just mileposts on the long highway of inflation, a direct reflection of ever-higher ticket prices at the local multiplex.

Bale: 'Batman Is No Superhero'

24 July 2008 5:06 AM, PDT | From wenn.com | See recent WENN news

Actor Christian Bale doesn't consider his Batman character to be a superhero - because the comic book creation relies on gadgets to beat his villains.

The star portrays the Caped Crusader for a second time in new movie The Dark Knight, and admits there is nothing special about Batman.

He says, "Batman doesn't actually have any superpowers. He just has (alter ego) Bruce Wayne's wealth - although that is a certain type of power!"

There is no question about which film will be No. 1 at America's multiplexes this weekend. The Dark Knight (Warner Bros.) has been posting unprecedented weekday grosses, with $24.5 million on Monday and $20.9 million on Tuesday, and it will easily win the upcoming three-day. The question is how much of a dive will the Christopher Nolan-directed crime thriller/superhero hybrid suffer on its second weekend? To formulate an answer, let's look at the second-weekend drops for the other 11 movies that have grossed $100 million so far in 2008:

Bale Continues Batman Promotion Trail

24 July 2008 12:01 AM, PDT | From wenn.com | See recent WENN news

Christian Bale turned out for the Spanish premiere of his new movie The Dark Knight on Wednesday, just a day after he faced allegations of assault.

The Batman star, 34, met with police in London on Tuesday over allegations he attacked his mum Jenny, 61, and sister Sharon, 40, at the capital's Dorchester Hotel on Sunday night.

But he stunned onlookers on Wednesday by walking the red carpet with his wife Sibi and costars Maggie Gyllenhaal and Aaron Eckhart at the event at Barcelona's Coliseum Theater.

The actor spent half an hour signing autographs for fans and posing for photographs but did not speak to journalists or answer questions about the incident.

'The Dark Knight' Fastest Movie Ever to $200 Million

23 July 2008 4:11 PM, PDT | From GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news

The Dark Knight has broken two more Hollywood record, and they weren't even close. By earning $24 million on Monday and another $20 million Tuesday, according to Box Office Mojo, the Batman Begins sequel is by far the fastest movie to $200 million, beating the old record by three days. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest accomplished the feat in eight days back in 2006.

So The Dark Knight is now the fastest to $100 million and $200 million, and we're even going to upgrade the film's chances to break $300 million. We had been predicting 13 days, a full three days quicker than the current record held by Dead Man's Chest. Now, however, it appears likely that The Dark Knight will beat $300 million in ten days, eleven tops.

The second record to fall to Christopher Nolan, Christian Bale, and Heath Ledger is the highest grossing movie in five days (it also holds the record for totals on opening day,

New 'Transformers' Logo Doesn't Tell Us Much

23 July 2008 1:53 PM, PDT | From GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news

You know you're a big deal when your new logo is kind of newsworthy.

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen has launched its new, rather sparse logo, at its official site.

JoBlo hipped us to it, so thanks to them, and right now, the logo is the only thing to report. There's some text at the bottom of the page, "Protect" and "Destroy," and if you click on Destroy you can go buy merchandise. Other than that, we just have a logo.

I would imagine, though, that this is definitely one of the 2009 movies to keep an eye on for some inspired marketing. Surely, everyone involved is smart enough to realize that just mimicking what The Dark Knight did this year won't work for every other movie, and that throwing money at marketing just to throw money at it doesn't mean it'll be successful. The first movie was handled very well in this regard,

Caine's Batman Pension Plan

23 July 2008 12:12 PM, PDT | From wenn.com | See recent WENN news

Sir Michael Caine was pleased to land the role of Batman's beloved butler Alfred in the rejuvenated superhero franchise - because he sees the part as his pension.

The legendary actor has played the loyal man-servant opposite Christian Bale in 2005's Batman Begins and The Dark Knight.

The 75-year-old took over the role from his actor pal Michael Gough, who portrayed the lovable character in the first four films before bowing out at the age of 84.

And Caine is keen to follow in Gough's footsteps - insisting he could play the character well into his 80s.

He says, "For me, the greatest thing about playing Alfred is that he's a character for all time and you can play it as long as you like.

"Like Michael Gough, a friend of mine, who played Alfred in the Batman films until he was 84. So I have another 10 years to go. It is really my old age pension."

Feature: Gotham City, A Visual History

23 July 2008 12:00 PM, PDT | From ifc.com | See recent IFC news

By Matt Singer

Since 1940's "Batman" #4, and his first movie serial three years later, the Caped Crusader has called Gotham City his home. On screen and on the printed page, its visual representation has changed quite a bit over almost 70 years. At times, the look of the metropolis has been an afterthought; at others, directors have paid more attention to Gotham's appearance than to the characters living in it, and its latest appearance, in Christopher Nolan's "The Dark Knight," may be its most unusual yet. (None the least for sparking a heated New York/Chicago debate.) Here's a look at eight movies full of gargoyles, dark alleys, and, yes, big naked statues.

Batman (1943)

Directed by Lambert Hillyer

Production Designer: Uncredited

This bargain basement production didn't even bother giving the Dynamic Duo a Batmobile, letting them make do with a generic black sedan, so it's no surprise Gotham is equally indistinct.

David Goyer Talks The Unborn - Dark Knight Scribe to Direct Again

23 July 2008 11:41 AM, PDT | From firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news

David Goyer is certainly sitting pretty right about now. Having served as one-third of the writing team for the immensely successful The Dark Knight, the scribe is already talking about future projects, namely his next directorial effort The Unborn, which is scheduled for 2009. Goyer spoke at length to MTV about the "old-school horror movie" based on an apparition the likes of the dybbuk (from Jewish folklore). The story has themes reminiscent of Goyer's second directing effort, 2007's The Invisible, in that Unborn also surrounds a wandering spirit; but this time it's one that's far more malevolent, and which tries to inhabit a body in order to be reborn. Goyer also revealed that beyond proper creepiness and scares, he intends to explain very little of the spirit, similarly to how the Joker was presented in Dark Knight. "It's one of the things that I think help makes things scary," Goyer said
