Cate Blanchett, the renowned Hollywood actress, advocates for the necessity of engaging in tough conversations within society, even if they may be uncomfortable or daunting. She believes that these conversations are essential for growth and understanding, whether it’s between boss and employee, friends, or any other social dynamic.
Blanchett criticizes the prevalent trend of providing trigger warnings, suggesting that it implies a lack of mutual respect or thorough examination of the subject matter. She encourages open dialogue and discussion without the need for preconceived warnings.
The actress expresses her enthusiasm when her work, such as her film ‘Tar’, elicits diverse reactions and debates. She finds it more rewarding to provoke thought and discussion rather than receive unanimous praise. Blanchett values respectful discourse over mere agreement, emphasizing the importance of differing perspectives in artistic interpretation.
Despite her successful career, Blanchett acknowledges the constant risk of failure with each new project.

The cast of Steven Soderbergh’s spy thriller Black Bag expands today with Regé-Jean Page joining Michael Fassbender and Cate Blanchett. Soderbergh directs from a script by David Koepp, with Caset Silver and Greg Jacobs producing. Focus Features is setting up Black Bag, with filming happening in London. Plot details remain a mystery. However, the film’s story is a spy thriller unfolding in the United Kingdom.
As The Hollywood Reporter pointed out in January, Soderbergh and Blanchett previously worked together on his 2006 noir thriller The Good German. Blanchett played a part in the film Ocean’s 8, as part of Soderbergh’s Ocean’s 11 franchise. Soderbergh produced Ocean’s 8 but didn’t direct that one. He and Fassbender previously worked together on his 2011 action thriller Haywire. And in addition to collaborating on Presence, Soderbergh and Koepp also worked together on the 2022 thriller Kimi.

Black Bag: Cate Blanchett, Michael Fassbender to star in Steven Soderbergh, David Koepp spy thriller
We have a double header of director Steven Soderbergh and screenwriter David Koepp news to report today. Not only has their ghost story Presence (read our review Here) secured distribution through Neon, but The Hollywood Reporter has also revealed that they’re re-teaming for a spy thriller called Black Bag, which is set to star Cate Blanchett (Nightmare Alley) and Michael Fassbender (The Killer).
Soderbergh and Koepp are currently seeking financing and distribution for Black Bag, with the project having gone out to studios and streamers last week. If one of the studios and streamers decided to pick up the project, that hasn’t been reported yet. They better move quickly, because Soderbergh is hoping to get this film into production in May.
Filming is expected to take place in London, and so far the only thing that has been revealed about the film’s story is that it “is...

Update: While discussing Presence with Filmmaker Magazine, Soderbergh already implies Black Bag will mark a break from his just-debuted feature:
“[The] solution now is to split in the opposite direction and make something that is equally well-served by forgetting this idea and shooting in a way that would hopefully appear seamless for the audience. It’s a pure pleasure space. Something entertaining like Howard Hawks is the best way to go. […] I would get to annihilate what I just did.”
The same day their latest collaboration debuts at Sundance, Steven Soderbergh and David Koepp are moving onto the next. Per THR, shooting’s soon to begin on Black Bag, a spy thriller that’s attached Michael Fassbender (previously of Haywire) and Cate Blanchett, is written by Koepp, and… that’s about it. Other than a May start date and notice it’s set in the U.

In Steven Soderbergh's sexy 1998 crime thriller, George Clooney plays the world's smoothest bank robber, Jack Foley, a man so charming that he manages to rob a bank using nothing more than a yellow highlighter. Foley begins "Out of Sight" in prison, having been busted after someone snitched on him. He bonds with imprisoned compatriots -- notably, Albert Brooks -- and the two of them arrange for Jack to get a job upon his release. When released, however, Jack is double-crossed by the Brooks character, and he is ejected from the building with no job. The rejection leads Jack, in a fit of resentment, to commit the above-mentioned robbery. He is caught, and put right back in prison.

The summer movie season may be winding down, but HBO Max is keeping the movie ball rolling in September 2021. HBO Max’s list of new releases this month is heavy on the film side of things – both in library and original offerings.
Two Warner Bros. films of note arrive this month. The James Wan-directed horror tale Malignant premieres on Sept. 10 and is followed by Clint Eastwood’s Cry Macho on Sept. 17. The next installment in Adventure Time: Distant Lands (which is kind of like a film series!) is titled Wizard City and opens the month on Sept. 2
Of course, it wouldn’t be a new month of HBO Max releases without some interesting evergreen Warner movie titles. Sept. 1 finds all eight Harry Potter movies returning to WarnerMedia’s streaming service. They will be accompanied by The Goonies, The Evil Dead, Cloverfield, and more. Later on in the month, Mortal Kombat (Sept.

No Sudden Move would fit right in with a classic Hollywood noir marathon. Out of director Steven Soderbergh‘s diverse filmography, it’s most reminiscent of his movie The Good German in its intent. Together, the filmmaker and screenwriter Ed Solomon sought to capture a visual language rarely seen anymore. Benicio del Toro‘s Ronald Russo and Don Cheadle‘s Curt Goynes could […]

Kate: It’s not meant to be.Alex: No. Don’t say that. Something must’ve happened.A decade and a half is not really long enough to commemorate a film’s anniversary—but then again, bogus nostalgia for the immediate past is the main engine of pop culture discourse today. So here’s a wild proposition: what if 2006 was the last great year for adventurous, bigger-budget movies? It’s impossible to answer, of course, but consider these studio releases: Marie-Antoinette, Children of Men, Southland Tales, Clint Eastwood’s Iwo Jima diptych, Inside Man, Miami Vice, Idlewild, Crank, Idiocracy, The Holiday, The Black Dahlia. Millions were spent on bizarre highbrow and/or vanity projects like Michel Gondry’s The Science of Sleep, Soderbergh’s The Good German, Tommy Lee Jones’ (phenomenal) The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada, or Ryan Murphy’s (excruciating) Running With Scissors. World Trade Center and United...

When Lolita Ritmanis was a little girl in Portland, Oregon, she didn’t even speak English. She spoke the native tongue of her parents, who fled the terrors of Communist Latvia in the years following World War II.
Now an Emmy-winning composer (and bilingual), she is on the Oscar shortlist for best original score for her rich orchestral and choral score for “Blizzard of Souls,” a World War I epic produced in her parents’ native country.
As Oscar voting begins today, Ritmanis is an admitted long shot for a nomination. But her win Tuesday night at the Society of Composers & Lyricists’ virtual ceremony, in the independent feature score category, ups her chances considerably. And a review of the past 20 years of Oscar score nominations reveals at least eight that contained “dark horse” nominees.

Thomas Newman and Steven Soderbergh hadn’t worked together in nearly seven years when the director called the composer about joining his next film “Let Them All Talk” in October 2019. “I was in London finishing up ‘1917’ and he said he had this movie and he was interested in me doing it,” Newman tells Gold Derby at our Meet the Btl Experts: Film Composers panel (watch above). “It was like late October of 2019 and we did it in January, February, pretty soon after I got back from London. We were able to record when people could actually smile at each other and see their faces.”
The HBO Max film is the duo’s fourth collaboration, following “Erin Brockovich” (2000), “The Good German” (2006), which brought Newman one of his 15 Oscar nominations, and “Side Effects” (2013). But the score is arguably the most unique one Newman has done for the Oscar winner. For one, Soderbergh...

Leave it to director Steven Soderbergh and composer Thomas Newman to go retro ’60s with the music for their fourth collaboration, “Let Them All Talk.”
Accompanying Meryl Streep, Candice Bergen, Dianne Wiest and the rest of Soderbergh’s cast crossing the Atlantic on the Queen Mary 2 is a jazz score that might easily have been penned by John Barry (“The Knack”), Neal Hefti (“The Odd Couple”) or Henry Mancini (“The Pink Panther”).
“Steven genuinely loves that kind of music,” Newman tells Variety. “It was fun to be doing something so different, so outspoken. I’m usually more into the sensuality of how music hits image and can shape and structure things. This was a lot of jazz waltzes.”
Soderbergh contacted Newman while the composer was finishing his “1917” score in London a year ago. They had previously collaborated on “Erin Brockovich,” “Side Effects” and “The Good German,” the last of...

The Newmans are the the most nominated family in Oscar history with a whopping 92 bids and they could bump up that number even more this year. Cousins Thomas Newman and Randy Newman are both in the running for Best Original Score for their work on two very different Best Picture contenders, “1917” and “Marriage Story,” respectively. Should they make the cut, it’d mark the first time in almost a quarter of a century and second time overall they’re competing against each other.
Two sounds mighty small when you consider that Thomas has been nominated 13 times in the category and Randy, eight. But alas, the only time they’ve collided was 24 years ago when Thomas was up for “Unstrung Heroes” and Randy was nominated for “Toy Story” in Best Musical or Comedy Score (the Oscars split score into drama and musical or comedy from 1995 to ’98); they lost to Alan Menken...

From Blumhouse, the producer of Get Out and Halloween check out the brand new trailer for Black Christmas.
Just in time for the holidays comes a timely take on a cult horror classic as a campus killer comes to face a formidable group of friends in sisterhood.
Hawthorne College is quieting down for the holidays. But as Riley Stone and her Mu Kappa Epsilon sisters—athlete Marty, rebel Kris, and foodie Jesse—prepare to deck the halls with a series of seasonal parties, a black-masked stalker begins killing sorority women one by one.
As the body count rises, Riley and her squad start to question whether they can trust any man, including Marty’s beta-male boyfriend, Nate, Riley’s new crush Landon or even esteemed classics instructor Professor Gelson (Cary Elwes).

This past summer, Blumhouse and Universal brought season's greetings to horror fans in June with the announcement of a new remake (the first reimagining was released in 2006) of Bob Clark's Black Christmas, and ahead of its release on Friday the 13th of December, horror fans can unwrap the official trailer for the new Black Christmas that shows sorority sisters standing strong together against a masked slasher and the disconcertingly unconcerned attitude on their college campus.

Last year’s AFI Life Achievement Award winner Diane Keaton cooed over George Clooney’s 18-year relationship with a pig. Laura Dern recalled being stranded in Budapest on their first movie, the never-released “Grizzly II: The Predator,” waiting for plane tickets home. Julianna Margulies thanked Clooney, who just turned 57, for tipping her that her “E.R.” character tested well enough to possibly come back to life, something she did not hear from her own agent.
“You’re the real deal,” she said, choking up, reminding the black-tie crowd that “E.R” arrived after 13 failed pilots. “The most important lessons I learned in this town I learned from George.” Richard Kind described George’s foundation as “the boys,” a motley crew that has hung together for three decades and were led by Clooney — before “E.R.” hit — to spend three days cleaning up East L.A. after the riots.

In the handful of years since his last feature, we’ve been teased with a variety of potential future projects from In the Mood for Love and Chungking Express director Wong Kar-wai. Most recently, there was a Gucci biopic for Annapurna and a TV series in China. Although those haven’t come to fruition yet, it looks like a new one will.
Four years ago while on the press tour for The Grandmaster, the director said, “I’ve always wanted to make a film about the Tong Wars, the rioting and the crime factions in San Francisco’s Chinatown in the early part of the last century.” Well, he’s now going to get his chance, albeit not in the initially-desired form.
Amazon Studios has announced Wong Kar-wai will direct Tong Wars, an hour-long drama series written and executive produced by Paul Attanasio (Donnie Brasco, The Good German), Variety reports.

There has always been something rather Hawksian about Steven Soderbergh. Speaking with the French magazine Positif in 1993, Soderbergh actually brought up Howard Hawks, a venerable icon of Hollywood cinema, stating, “The career I would like is John Huston’s or Howard Hawks’s. You know, very varied, many different subjects.” It’s true Soderbergh and Hawks diverge greatly in terms of form—the latter is straightforward, classically composed, no frills; the former is stylish, spontaneous, technically innovative—but their recurring subject matter, with a little stretching, isn’t far removed. Take the focus on working professionals in Traffic (2000), the Ocean’s films (2001, ‘04, ‘07), The Girlfriend Experience (2009), and Magic Mike (2012); though not exactly traditional Hawksian occupations, there is a firm appreciation for a job to do and to be done well. More than that, though, what connects Howard Hawks and Steven Soderbergh is their uniform consistency, not necessarily in terms of year-after-year quantity,...

Steven Soderbergh is one of those directors that for every one "bleh" film he does (Ocean's Twelve, The Good German) there's about 15 more that are "hmmm, quite fascinating indeed" (please don't make me list all of them). Since any New York City cinephile has a nearly suffocating wealth of theatrical options, we figured it’d be best to compile some of the more worthwhile repertory showings into one handy list. Displayed below are a few of the city’s most reliable theaters and links to screenings of their weekend offerings — films you’re not likely to see in a theater again anytime soon, and many of which are, also, on 35mm. If you have a chance to attend any of these, we’re of the mind that it’s time extremely well-spent.

The Conversation is a feature at PopOptiq bringing together Drew Morton and Landon Palmer in a passionate debate about cinema new and old. For their tenth piece, they discuss Guy Maddin’s fusion of silent-era horror and dance, Dracula: Pages from a Virgin’s Diary (2002).

Every autumn, I treat Halloween the way some Midwestern moms obsess over Thanksgiving or Christmas. Horror novels (last year, I finally read Joe Hill’s Heart-Shaped Box and loved it), true crime documentaries, and an abundance of films make up the majority of my media diet for about six weeks. Over the past week, I’ve been re-reading Bram Stoker’s Dracula and re-watching the glut of adaptations out there. I think I’ve finally dialed in my three favorite translations…in no particular ranking! Obviously, F.W. Murnau’s Nosferatu (1922) has a certain advantage from being the “first,” but it has...

Earlier this month it was reported that John Williams would be scoring his 27th film for Steven Spielberg, "Bridge Of Spies." But in just a couple of weeks, things will have changed, and the filmmaker will be working with a new composer for his upcoming thriller. DreamWorks has announced that twelve-time Oscar nominee Thomas Newman ("Wall-e," "Skyfall," "The Good German") will step in to score "Bridge Of Spies," replacing John Williams who stepped out due to a health issue, which has since been cleared up. No argument here about Newman's hire, and if anything, it'll be interesting to see a Spielberg movie under a different musical palette than that of his longtime collaborator. But the Spielberg/Williams duo won't be apart for too long as the composer will score Spielberg's next film, "The B.F.G." "Bridges Of Spies" arrives on October 16th with "The B.F.G." arriving on July 1, 2016. Full press.

The Academy Award for Best Original Score is one of the categories I find most interesting and most frustrating. First, the good: I love the awarding of film music, which can immeasurably improve the experience of a film and can become iconic in its own right. There is also much about the music branch that I love, particularly its international flavor, both in terms of the composers cited and the types of music rewarded. Moreover, while the category tends to favor Best Picture nominees and epic movies, it is not excessively exclusionary in this respect. But that love of epics can sometimes lead to simply rewarding "most music." More importantly, this branch is infamously insular. Unless a composer is aboard a major Best Picture contender or has otherwise composed a simply iconic score, it is unusual to earn a first nomination. And even those features are not always enough for first-timers.

Growing up, the "Sexiest Man Alive" issue of People Magazine was a big deal in my house. By the age of 15, I had all the names of every "Sexiest Man" memorized, and while there were always years when I disagreed with People's choice, there was only one error that I filed in the "unforgivable" category. It's not much but it certainly takes the focus away from the lukewarm action choreography. Framed for assassinating Grandmaster Fumitaka (Shang Tsung from Mortal Kombat), the...
