From January 1989 until March 1996, Neil Gaiman's pivotal goth text "The Sandman" flooded the hearts of Doc Martens-wearing, clove cigarette-smoking, Fields of the Nephilim-listening teens the world over. The comic followed the downbeat, bitter adventures of Dream, a supernatural personification of human dreams, as he escaped a prolonged prison sentence in a fantasy kingdom, and set out traversing multiple dimensions to build up his power again. Dream frequently ran into other personified human concepts like Death, Destiny, Despair, and Delirium, and existed in a vast, complicated mythology world that your "Rocky Horror Picture Show"-attending buddies probably knew better than you.
Because of its cult popularity, scuttlebutt about a "Sandman" feature film began to spread sometime in the mid-1990s. Recalling the time, the buzz seemingly became loudest following the release of Alex Proyas' ultra-Goth comic book adaptation "The Crow," a film that appeared to be visually and tonally in...

★★★☆☆Familial waters run especially deep in Dave McKean's haunting new drama Luna (2014), which featured in the experimental Vanguard strand of this year's Toronto International Film Festival. In the director's striking but uneven 2005 debut feature, Mirrormask, it was style that particularly caught the eye as he crafted an utterly unique blend of reality and fantasy, a trick he emulates with his latest effort. A meditation on grief and parenthood, it has some shaky moments, but their memory is largely erased by beautiful, spectral flights of fancy and a thoughtful and inventive treatment of fairly brooding subject matter. It's a bold, intimate vision from a very interesting emerging British filmmaker.

Written and Directed by Dave McKean
UK, 2014
While Mirrormask has become something of a cult film, Dave McKean is still better known for his work in illustration than his directorial efforts in film. McKean’s groundbreaking style consistently raised the bar in comic art; his contribution to the 1989 release of “Arkham Asylum”, written by Grant Morrison, helped change our understanding of the comic art. McKean’s style seemed uniquely suited to the mind space of an asylum, his layered mixed media style reflective of thoughts and emotions in conflict. Perhaps his best known work is his contributions to the cover art for Neil Gaiman’s iconic Sandman series, once again cementing the phantasmagoric quality of McKean’s work. His contribution to Gaiman highlighted the obscured landscape of nightmares which he frightfully recreated through superimposition, collage and drawing.
It should be no surprise that McKean’s transition into filmmaking would...

While a certain “freshness” might be lacking in the Midnight Madness programme, the Vanguard section (and Wavelengths to be unveiled next month) is where there might be more cerebral bang for the buck and programmer Colin Geddes has a nice canvas to paint on with the bunch announced below. Running down the list we find a must see in the Cannes sensation Alleluia (Fabrice Du Welz), which had the entire Ioncinema team in awestruck mode, and then we have Berberian Sound Studio‘s Peter Strickland breaking out the world premiere for The Duke of Burgundy (see pic above). After penning several Ulrich Seidl items over the years (Import/Export, Paradise Trilogy), Veronika Franz might outclass The Shining for most creepiest young child twin set with Severin Fiala for the Venice Film Fest selected Goodnight Mommy. Takashi Miike is naturally invited back to the fest with his latest, and Spring, which...

War is never pretty, especially if it involves an alien invasion.
After a far-off solar system is destroyed, several remaining extraterrestrial races, collectively known as Votans, venture to Earth seeking a fresh start. Unsympathetic to their plight, the planet's nations turn them away, sparking a devastating battle that leaves the globe and environment drastically changed forever. Thirty-four years later, the two sides have called a ceasefire and are trying to coexist in this hostile new frontier. That's the premise behind the ambitious sci-fi drama "Defiance" (premiering April 15 on Showcase and SyFy).
The series finds anti-hero Joshua Nolan (Grant Bowler, "Ugly Betty"), a reluctant lawkeeper, attempting to keep the peace in the small town of Defiance, where cultures clash and internal, as well as external, conflicts jeopardize their existence. To make matters worse, a tremendous amount of technology has been lost. There's still functioning electricity, but no satellites, internet or air travel.

Even though we.ll probably never see a proper Sandman film, fans of author Neil Gaiman have been pretty spoiled in recent years, with Stardust, Mirrormask and Coraline adaptations all getting time on the big screen, as well as Beowulf, which he wrote the screenplay for. With the upcoming HBO production ofAmerican Gods still not cancelled or postponed, and Ron Howard.s name attached to The Graveyard Book, it looks like 2014 will be another banner year for the clever Brit. As if those weren.t enough, Deadline reports Gaiman.s upcoming novelThe Ocean at the End of the Lane has already found a home with Focus Features and Playtone, the production company owned by Tom Hanks and producer Gary Goetzman. Carrying on the Gaiman adaptation trend of acquiring great directors, Joe Wright, responsible for drama such as Anna Karenina and Atonement, is attached to direct. Movie studios are renowned for their love of sequels, because what’s more marketable than something that already exists? Sometimes, though, an “official sequel” isn’t the way to go, either because the existing property is considered “untouchable,” or because all the characters are dead and the notion of “pulling a Dallas” would be considered a crime against cinematic endeavor in general.

For your reading pleasure, we’ve assembled 10 famous movies and the “side-sequels” you didn’t know they’d spawned somehow. Be that they were created by a different production team entirely or were referred to by their writers as “spiritual follow-ups” to otherwise great flicks, barely one of ‘em is worth a minute of your precious time.

It’s been confined to the pits of development hell for a while with the likes of Neil Jordan (‘Interview With The Vampire’, ‘The Brave One’) at one time set to write and direct before that project eventually fell through but now it seems as though Neil Gaiman’s superb ‘The Graveyard Book’ is about to be unearthed once again.
Deadline reports that Disney have secured the rights to Gaiman’s children’s fantasy novel in a very lucrative six figure deal. Coincidentally, this follows on from news that Warner Bros. are set to start work on a new adaptation of Rudyard Kipling’s ‘The Jungle Book’ of which Gaiman’s tale is somewhat inspired by as it tells the story of a boy called Bod who is raised by ghosts and other supernatural denizens in a graveyard after his family is murdered:

From the early days of Hollywood, film studios have believed that if one is good, five or six are better. That seems even truer today, when deals are inked for sequels before the first film even gets released. Even worse, it seems that over the years we’ve been bombarded by terrible sequels or worse, sequels to movies that weren’t all that great to begin with. And yet, there are those movies that are so good, they need – nay, deserve – to have their stories continued on the big screen...
10. Crossroads (1986)
Ralph Macchio plays Eugene Martone, a young guitar prodigy at Julliard who becomes enamored with Robert Johnson, and finds his friend Willie Brown (Joe Seneca) in a minimum security hospital. Eugene believes there is a lost song of Johnson’s, and Willie tricks him into breaking him out in exchange for the song. But in all honesty, Willie wants...

For any horror fan, Clive Barker’S Hellraiser Masterpieces: Vol. 1 (Boom! Studios) is a definitely must-have. Originally published by Marvel Comics, this collection of short stories keeps the heart racing and never loses a beat. As each story gets better and better, you will undoubtedly have a difficult time putting this comic down. This collection contains a list of fantastic storytellers, including Barker himself, Neil Gaiman (Sandman) and Larry Wachowski (The Matrix). Likewise, an army of talented artists, namely Mike Mignola (Hellboy), Dave McKean (Mirrormask) and Alex Ross (Kingdom Come), has also contributed this a worthwhile horror experience.

Director Michael Winterbottom's road trip movie The Trip has an unusual conceit: It appears to be almost a documentary about British comedians Steve Coogan (Tropic Thunder, 24 Hour Party People) and Rob Brydon (Mirrormask) as they tour the English countryside eating in restaurants for an assignment Coogan has from an English newspaper. However, the two actors play fictionalized versions of themselves, with Margo Stilley playing Coogan's not-in-real-life girlfriend who refuses to go with him on his restaurant tour, prompting Coogan to invite Brydon instead.
The Trip began as a six-part series for the BBC released at the end of last year and was then edited into a feature. At the time of the show's release, Coogan admitted to The Guardian that the movie was born from Winterbottom's enjoyment of the improvised scenes between Coogan and Brydon in 2005's Tristam Shandy: A Cock and Bull Story, though Coogan admitted that he...

Holy smokes. Where on earth did this M dot Strange character come from and where has he been hiding?! Apparently I.m the one who has been living under a box because he previously directed a film which premiered and sold at Sundance in 2007. But it really doesn.t matter though because he.s on my radar now and about to deliver what appears to be a great looking animated film.
The first teaser for Heart String Marionette is buried after a few quotes from what appear to be YouTube users and bookended by Strange selling his .how to. book (hey, a guy.s got to make a little money, especially when working independently) but the quotes and sales pitch are worth sitting through for the quick (I had to watch it twice!) look at the film which is reminiscent of Dave McKean's MirrorMask but much, much darker.

I've been a Neil Gaiman fan since I was about ten. That was when I read his children's novel Coraline, one of the absolute scariest books I'd read up until that point. I didn't closely follow Gaiman (at that point, most of his output was a little beyond my comprehension). I watched his film MirrorMask a few years later, and it's still one of the most visually awesome movies I've ever seen.
But Gaiman's just kept popping up sporadically in my life. This most recent recurrence has been with one of my favorite television shows, Doctor Who. Gaiman has long been rumored to be writing an episode, and it's finally been confirmed that his episode will air as part of the show's upcoming sixth series.
The episode, which will air fourth in the series, has been revealed by SFX magazine to be titled "The Doctor's Wife." Could this title be...

The Arbor
DVD & Blu-ray, Verve Pictures
After an Oscars night that was the very definition of playing it safe, it's well worth watching a film like The Arbor to remind yourself that there are no rules in cinema, and still plenty of different, fascinating ways to tell a story. First-time director Clio Barnard interviewed the family and friends of writer Andrea Dunbar. She was best known for the Rita, Sue And Bob Too screenplay and for her breakout play, also called The Arbor, scenes of which are interspersed throughout the film. Rather than just show the interviewees as talking heads, Barnard had actors lip-synch to the soundtrack in and around The Arbor, part of a Bradford housing estate where Dunbar grew up. What results is neither drama nor documentary, instead it's almost like a Ken Loach version of Creature Comforts. Having actors mime the words works incredibly well – it sounds...

So, as the music builds to its inevitable crescendo, the camera slowly pans heavenwards and the credits duly roll on yet another year a legion of movie lovers loyally raise their glasses, stare wistfully into the middle distance and thus share fond, warm and altogether welcome memories of the last twelve months of movie making magic.

Hi all, Tim here from Antagony & Ecstasy.
Today, somewhere outside Minneapolis, fantasy writer Neil Gaiman celebrates his 50th birthday (or not; birthdays don't seem to fit the persona the author has created for himself. But I don't have to care). And while he's better known for his comic books and novels than for his work in movies, his short cinematic career is filled with enough highs that it seems more than fair to commemorate the man's half-century.
Gaiman's film career got a rough start with his BBC miniseries Neverwhere: cheaply made and hurt by an underbaked structure, it's not half as memorable as the novelized version of the same story from the following year (the morbidly curious can find it on Netflix Watch Instantly). Fortunately, Gaiman first theatrical project was quite a bit more promising, as Miramax tapped him to write the 1999 English dub for Miyazaki's Princess Mononoke. The...

If you're a science fiction fan at all, you know Neil Gaiman. The man has crafted some of the best sci-fi and fantasy literature ever. He's responsible for the Sandman series of graphic novels, he wrote the books behind the films Coraline, MirrorMask, and Stardust, and his 2008 novel The Graveyard Book won both the Carnegie, Hugo, and Newberry Awards. It's inevitable, then, that the episode of Doctor Who that he writes will be one of the most amazing things ever, correct?
The answer is most certainly, though what the episode is about, no one really knows aside from Gaiman. The episode was alleged to be called "The House of Nothing," back in 2009, though Gaiman insisted through his Twitter feed that the now-infamous title only stuck around "for about 20 mins in Feb 2009, when it still had a house in it. & some nothing."
So what is the episode about exactly? That's a good question.

A New British movie is to tell the story of the ancient cataclysm that's believed to be the basis for the Atlantis legend.
The BBC has announced the TV film, to be called Atlantis and directed by Primeval's Tony Mitchell, will "tell the dramatic story of the greatest natural disaster to shake the ancient world, a disaster that triggered the downfall of a civilisation and spawned a legend."
The film will be made using the same techniques as Zack Snyder's Spartan war epic 300 and will be accompanied by a documentary looking at the historical evidence.
Around 1620 BC a gigantic volcano in the Aegean Sea stirred from its 19,000-year slumber.
The eruption tore apart the island of Thera, producing massive tsunamis that flooded the nearby island of Crete, the centre of Europe's first great civilisation - the Minoans.
This apocalyptic event, many experts now believe, provided the inspiration for the legend of Atlantis.

Although hearing isn't the sense that moves quickest and deepest into our emotional memory, a favorite movie soundtrack can definitely dash almost as quickly to the center of your brain as a smell when it comes to recalling a certain scene, the memory of listening to it driving in the car, or smooching in the theater. A lot of the time, these are actual compilations of songs - Pump Up the Volume and Pretty in Pink are the first that spring to mind for me - but sometimes they're scores from an iconic composer.
David Lynch movies like Blue Velvet or Wild at Heart would still, for better or for worse, be David Lynch movies without Angelo Badalamenti's scores, but they'd be absolutely lacking, whether we knew it or not. Ennio Morricone is another unmistakable composer, most famously perhaps for his work on Sergio Leone's spaghetti westerns -...

Who's this now?
Well, this is an interesting twist.
Yesterday, we mentioned that Neil Patrick Harris had taken to his Twitter with a low-key appeal for votes in Man of the Decade, and had mounted what seemed to be a huge lead. Even once John Barrowman engaged via his own Twitter, we though maybe the 42x multiple Nph had in followers might make the race over.
Enter Jonathan Ross, riding on a white stallion, to aid his friend John Barrowman. Jonathan is, for lack of a better comparison for our U.S. readers, a sort of Jay Leno in the UK, except people don't seem to hate him. In fact they love him so much, he's got about 500,000 followers on Twitter. So when he put the story out there that Barrowman was going down to Nph, things took on a life of their own.

It’s time to get the real party started. I’ve whittled down what I prefer to think of as the “critical darlings” of my top ten best scores of the past decade. From this point on, it’s all subjective. The next three scores are personal favorites that I feel are real standouts from the hordes of disappointingly functional soundtracks I’ve witnessed. Before I continue, let me clarify a few things. I chose these scores (and this is so for the previous picks) not just because they suited their respective films; this they did well. I am highlighting them because they are also, standalone, great music that isn’t content to merely assist the visual action. At times, these soundtracks may even overwhelm the film itself, though this is a rarity. I love them because it’s not until you hear them outside their natural habitat that you realize how phenomenal they are.

Of course Neil Gaiman discovered a zombie. Who would you expect to find such a thing? This is the guy behind such freaky works as the "Sandman" comic book series, "NeverWhere," "Coraline," "MirrorMask" and more. You've gotta figure he already walks through his day seeing crazy s--t wherever he looks.
The only difference is that today he has photographic proof! Gaiman was out walking his dog the other day when he snapped a random picture of it in the snow, which he tweeted with the text "Walking the semi-invisible dog," as if he didn't notice the human hand protruding from the ground. Roughly 10 minutes later he re-tweeted the pic with the text "What hand...? Oh. That hand. I didn't notice." That's what happens when you make a living crafting rich, engrossing fantasy worlds. Hit the jump for some undead action in today's Daily TwitPic.

There's only one Dave McKean feature film out there in the world so far, and that's Mirrormask. Doesn't seem right that such an auspicious debut wouldn't have been followed up more rapidly, or even very regularly. I feel hard done by. I reported earlier in the year on McKean's continuing attempts to get ass-kicking kitty picture Varjak Paw off of the ground. Now it seems he's also taking meetings about an eventual big screen rendering of his epic, ambitious Cages comic book. Here's what the man himself tweeted on the matter: Great first meeting about Cages film; a long term possibility, but good to know all interested parties are on the same page. Cages is rather widely considered to be McKean's masterwork. Like Varjak Paw it hinges on the comings and goings of a cat, but the similarities pretty much dry up right there. Originally serialised through the first half of the '90s,...

Dave McKean, the comic artist and graphic novelist best known for his collaborations with Neil Gaiman, announced this morning that he's in the early stages of bringing his book "Cages" to film. The seasoned creator who directed and co-wrote "MirrorMask" with Gaiman, will likely do at least as much for "Cages."
"Great first meeting about 'Cages' film; a long term possibility, but good to know all interested parties are on the same page," McKean posted on his Twitter account.
The telephone-book-sized hardcover, which McKean published through Kitchen Sink and Nbm, covers a muliplot narrative about cats and the creative inhabitants of an apartment building, among other things. The iconic "Sandman" cover artist serialized the tale before eventually collecting it in its ultimate state, which he now wants to animate.
"I would be adapting [and] directing," he explained. "I did 'Cages' 20 [years] ago, think it could grow into unusual animated film."

Multimedia artist Dave McKean is hoping to develop his graphic novel Cages into a feature film.

McKean is probbably best known for his work with Neil Gaiman. A movie based on Neil Gaiman’s “Sandman” stories has long been a topic of discussion among fans — and even moreso lately, given the success of Gaiman’s recent film projects like “Coraline,” “Beowulf” and 2005’s “Mirrormask.”
While the likelihood of “Sandman” being turned into a film is largely dependent on whether rights-holder DC Comics wants it made into a film, there’s been no shortage of fans arguing that both “Sandman” and some of its various spin-off titles (most notably, “Death“) deserve the big-screen treatment. But who could get behind the camera to bring “Sandman” to (figurative) life? The popular author recently offered his own answer to that very question.
“I think it’s probably some kid who, right now, is around 26-years-old,” Gaiman said in an interview with Jam! Showbiz. “He may or may not have directed his first movie, but he loves ‘Sandman’ and he has the...

Neil Gaiman’s works are no stranger to multiple mediums. With his stories onscreen (”Stardust,” “MirrorMask”) as well as onstage (”Mr. Punch,” “The Wolves In the Walls”) it only seems natural that “Coraline,” the author’s award-winning children’s book (as well as graphic novel, 3D animated film and video game) has been joined by a musical incarnation.
Playing now through June 20 at McC’s Lucille Lortel Theatre, the musical features lyrics and music by Stephin Merritt (”The Magnetic Fields”), with a book by David Greenspan. Leigh Silverman is directing and Jayne Houdyshell (”Wicked”) stars as the reality-hopping Coraline.
In an interview with BlackBook Merritt explained how his relationship with Gaiman culminated in a fully realized production.
“I asked other people to come on board. I got the rights from [Gaiman]. I was already friends with Neil when ‘Coraline’ was written,” said Merrit. “He asked me to do the music for the audiobook.

If you’re terrified of candy-colored vivisectionists, and your nightmares were archived into a graphic novel, and that novel suddenly sprang to flash-animated life, it’d probably look a lot like Medical Island. Darkly sinister, quirky, and engaging, the Miyazakian web series is a collaboration from veteran animation producers Margaret Dean (Ren & Stimpy, Scooby Doo, The Batman) and Michael Polis (MirrorMask, Kermit’s Swamp Years). Other Mother (voiced by Teri Hatcher) and Coraline (voiced by Dakota Fanning) in Coraline
