Two-time Oscar-winning filmmaker Alexander Payne shared his passion for film and his thoughts on contemporary American cinema with the audience at the Lumière Film Festival in Lyon where he is premiering his eighth feature film, “The Holdovers,” under the French title “Winter Break,” on October 15th.
In a conversation skilfully led and translated by Los Angeles-based French film journalist Didier Allouch, Payne drew laughs from the Lumière crowd when he explained that the secret to making good films was “keeping your budgets low.”
“John Huston approached Luis Buñuel one day and asked him, ‘How is it that you make these wonderful films, like “Viridiana” and “The Exterminating Angel”?’ And Buñuel replied, ‘How much money do you make and how much money do you think I make?’” said Payne with a smile.
While he made no secret of his distaste for Hollywood blockbusters and said it was still possible to make movies like “Sideways,...

Graeme Ferguson, the Canadian filmmaker who co-founded Imax, died on Saturday at the age of 91.
Ferguson had reportedly been battling cancer, passing away at his home in Norway Point, Ontario.
Imax took to Twitter today to confirm the news. “We mourn the passing of Graeme Ferguson, visionary IMAX Co-Founder and iconic filmmaker,” they said. “Thank you and rest in peace, Graeme.”
Ferguson founded the Imax Corporation in 1967, with filmmaker Roman Kroitor, businessman Robert Kerr, and engineer William Shaw. His latter two collaborators had been friends of his since high school.
The initial impetus for Imax was Polar Life, an experimental film that Ferguson directed for Expo ’67 in Montreal. In collaboration with Kroitor, Kerr and Shaw, he would develop a proprietary system of high-resolution cameras, film formats, projectors and theaters which would bring a new sense of immersion and scope to the cinematic experience.

Broadcast saw a shakeup in the Nielsen rankings this autumn, with Fox poised to grab its first fall TV ratings win among the all-important adults 18-49 demographic in a decade, and NBC set to snap CBS’ 18-year total viewers winning streak.
Fox is also going to claim its first-ever fall ratings victory among the key demo when counting entertainment shows only — so excluding the ratings it gets for sports programs like “Thursday Night Football” — thanks mainly to “The Masked Singer,” which premiered its second season in September, and the strong ratings for Season 3 of Ryan Murphy’s first-responder drama “9-1-1.”
Meanwhile, NBC’s first fall win in total viewers in 20 years is thanks to the continued success of “Sunday Night Football” (the highest-rated and most-watched primetime program), “This Is Us” and “The Voice.” The viewership for Dick Wolf’s “Chicago” dramas doesn’t hurt either.

Networks aren’t finding many TV viewers in their stockings this week. Or below their Christmas trees, or on any couches across America, for that matter. That’s because this week, the one with the Yuletide smack dab in the middle of it, typically sees the lowest television usage of the entire traditional September-to-May Nielsen season. Merry Christmas, TV execs. Christmas week last year, which spanned Dec. 24, 2018 to Dec. 30, 2018, had a total usage of televisions (Tut) level of 59.70. That means during an average primetime minute, 59.70% of homes were watching TV programming on either linear or digital platforms. That’s low. Also Read: The Key to Fox's 'The Simpsons' Success? A wife and child have gone missing in the small town of Devil’s Gate, North Dakota. While all indicators point to husband Jackson Pritchard as the prime suspect, pushy outsider FBI agent Daria Francis instinctively feels something else is going on in this incestuous hamlet and together with deputy Colt Salter goes to investigate. And indeed they do track down Pritchard, a man caged in unrelenting darkness and despair…
A genre-bending, genre-blending mix of horror, sci-fi and backwoods adventure, Devil’s Gate is one of those films that takes often cliched parts from other genres and utilises them in new ways – by playing with and subverting audience expectations to create a story that uses misdirect and convention-bending in ways other films use stereotypes and cliches. Now there’s a blast from the past. Sorry, so cliche but I had to. If you’ve seen Milo in anything it’s probably been in Rocky Balboa, Heroes, Grown Ups 2, and a whole list of other appearances including This Is Us. He’s more of a star than many people seem to know but he’s been so under the radar for so much of his career that a lot of people don’t even know his name. They either know him as “that guy” or by a character name that is a lot easier to pronounce. That’s really too bad because he’s

Much like the Red Woman looking into Arya’s future, much death seems likely in the season finale — but in what form might we expect it? There are plenty of theories out there as to what might transpire in “The Dragon and the Wolf.” The one guarantee: There will probably be a dragon and a wolf involved, at least on a metaphorical level. Beyond that, here are some additional thoughts.
The Snow Job
In order for a previous prediction for the “Game of Thrones” series finale to pan out, there needs to be some traction on the Dany/Tyrion romance. Pair that with my demand for meaningful blood to be spilt, and there’s only one thing that can happen Sunday night:
Jon Snow will die.
I know, I know. He’s died already, and, worse yet, it’s felt like he’s died 1,000 times. Even mentioning Jon Snow dying feels like a tired,...

It's no secret that I didn't like what Paramount Pictures did with the G.I. Joe franchise at all. I grew up on all things G.I. Joe, that franchise was my favorite thing as a kid and I still love it. Unfortunately, the studio handled the property completely wrong. I've always felt that the franchise needed a complete overhaul, and now the studio is moving forward with it. I just don't know if what they are planning will be any better than what they've already done.
During an interview with La Times, it's explained that Paramount has big plans for rebooting the G.I. Joe franchise with "a revamped look intended to appeal to younger audiences." Simon Waters, who oversees consumer products at Hasbro Studios, said that they want to take "a more millennial approach." He explains:
"The world has changed, and I think you’re going to see G.

Arrow returns with episode 12 of Season 5. The episode begins with a flashback of Talia training Oliver by telling him to embrace the darkness. Talia tells Oliver that she has found him in order for him to correct his mistakes. The flashbacks have been great since Talia's return, but failed to deliver in this episode. Aside from the flashbacks being limited, they didn't reveal anything new. Talia wants him to avenge his father, which was covered last episode. This seems like a missed opportunity to take advantage of the hype the flashbacks have recently developed.

The episode also brought the return of two characters; Quentin Lance and Susan Williams. News comes that General Walker has stolen a military nuke. Oliver takes most of the team, including the new Black Canary, to Russia where he meets Anatoly who greets him with a punch to the face stating,...

Well, now we know why Game of Thrones‘ Melisandre likes to drop her robe so much.
Think about it: If you were a zillion-year-old woman using mystical jewelry to fool people into thinking you were a powerful, if a bit nutty, young hottie, wouldn’t you want to show off the goods as often as possible?
Yep, as the Red Woman prepares for bed at the end of the HBO drama’s sixth season premiere, she removes all her clothing and her ever-present necklace… and we soon see that she’s actually an ancient crone.

I’ve been a fan of G.I. Joe for my whole life. I had a ton of the toys and I enjoyed watching the animated series in the 1980s. It’s such a great franchise, but that franchise is pretty much dead now. Paramount Pictures made sure to help kill it off with the awful films that they made. Those G.I. Joe movies should have been amazingly awesome in every way! Instead, we just got mediocre crap that didn’t do the franchise any justice at all.
The studio has been in the process of developing a third film, but I doubt it will be any better than what we saw in the first two. They just need to start from scratch, overhaul the franchise, and pretend that the other films never happened. The last I heard, the studio had set up a writers room to try and...

Maddie dyes her hair blonde this week on Nashville. It’s a shame she doesn’t bleach some of that stank attitude out, as well.
Grounding hasn’t worked. Taking away her phone hasn’t worked. And telling her that no, you may not accept Sony’s offer of a solo recording contract certainly hasn’t worked — quite the opposite. In fact, Rayna’s elder daughter is at her absolute worst in this episode, vibrating at an annoying teen frequency somewhere between Buffy-Season-5 Dawn and Game of Thrones-any-season Joffrey.

All of those Juliette-on-the-ledge Nashville promos ABC threw at us weren’t kidding: This week’s episode was fatal… just not for the rock-bottom-hitting Ms. Barnes.
Nope, Jeff Fordham was the hour’s casualty, falling from the roof of a hotel in the process of saving a drunk and drugged Juliette from committing suicide.

Ok, that’s it: I’m putting out an official Apb for A Dog Named Sue.
If you’re new to Nashville, you might not know that Deacon once had the cutest dog in the world, but he gave it away to a perfectly good ex whose biggest flaw was that she wasn’t Rayna. That dog’s name? Sue — a nod to Mr. Johnny Cash.
And while I’m sure Deke saved himself a lot of besmirched carpets, way-too-early morning walks and chewed furniture, he also denied himself — and all of us! — the special cuddly comfort a pup provides during rough times.

Ladies and gentlemen, Nashville‘s Beverly O’Connor — bless her heart — has left the building.
Yes, the aneurysm that closed out the last episode left Scarlett’s abusive mama/Deacon’s spiteful sister/Rayna’s jealous hater hitching a ride on the gleaming Greyhound to the great beyond. Only problem is, in the same way Bev never knew how to exit an argument gracefully, her brain-dead body hasn’t gotten the memo — creating drama, strife and freefloating sadness for her daughter and brother (and those who love them).
Which leads me directly to some real talk for Rayna’s man: Deacon Edward* Claybourne,...

We’re only two weeks into ABC’s Quantico, but I’ve already got a sternly worded warning for the series’ Powers That Be:
Don’t you dare make protagonist Alex — even inadvertently — somehow involved in the terrorist plot she’s racing to uncover.
Why? Because, aside from young Agent Parrish, there is no one and nothing to trust on this show — and trying to figure out the hidden agendas of all the dashing would-be bombers simultaneously is downright tiring.
