Clever as always, the children of Hamelen have been leaving chalk marks on the wall in order to find their way back. By pure coincidence their mark turns out to have a magical purpose. When used in combination with a Niff time hole and some magic words, the speaker will be transported from Ardubal to the Plomp van Tromp.

Queen Madelein II of Bambergen has bestowed the title of Baron on Hildebrandt Brom for his bravery against Tromp. He will also get a small piece of land to call his own: the region of Laar. Meanwhile, the evil Rinse, Queen of Grasp visits her equally nasty son, Prince Guurt, in his cell at castle Bambergen. Soon after-wards, a mysterious young girl named Jul arrives at the palace, carrying a large birdcage.

Aernout has fallen head over heels in love with Jul. When he sneaks into her room to leave a love poem on her pillow, he can't resist a peek inside her covered birdcage. The parrot inside, Lorre Lei, utters a magic shrinking spell and suddenly the entire castle and all it's inhabitants are no larger than a doll's house.

Only Bertram and Hildebrandt have escaped the shrinking spell. Everybody else is stuck inside the toy sized castle. Jul explains it was Queen Rinse van Grasp who induced her to bring the magic parrot to Bambergen. When the palace shrank, Rinse's son Guurt van Grasp managed to escape the dungeons of Bambergen.

Jul explains she is looking for her brother Jut, who's head is displayed on the underground fair at War. Nobody seems to know where his body had gone. She blames the Queen of Bambergen on Jut's predicament, as he was last seen trying to enter the Prinsentoto to win the hand of Princess Madelein. Bertam and Hildebrandt decide to travel to War on their flying carpet, and take the entire castle along with them.

The Hamelaars get the head of Jut back on his body by pulling it out of one of the wall portals at War. Queen Madelein II frees her old school chum the Dutches of Falda from one of Ranonkel & Augusteins other tricks. As the group travels back to Bambergen, the flying carpet first stops at Laar, Hildebrandt's very own baron ship, where the purple flag of Grasp is blowing from the tower.

Queen Rinse of Grasp has taken over the palace at Laar and is now trying to get Gark the mudslinging giant on her side. An enraged Queen Madelein of Bambergen wants to settle the matter face to face with Rinse, but first her old school friend the Dutches of Falda (the original owner of Lorre Lei the parrot) will have to help her to get back to normal size.
