Prince Tor and Prinsess Madelein are about to be wed. Even Gruizel Gruis has been invited. King Mink of the lost land of Morpuys will perform the ceremony. Unfortunately, the evil Guurt Van Grasp uses Gruizel to present the princess with a magic mirror that transports her to another land, the very place King Mink is looking for.

The Hamelaars are traveling in a giant, flying pumpkin lend to them by Princess Madelein's two fairy godmothers. Prince Tor, traveling on his horse, has been kidnapped by the 5 witches of Dril who all want to marry him in order to regain their youth. The kind Waternix Assia, in order to save Prince Tor, has given him a poisoned apple to eat. The Hamelaars find the prince is sleeping in a glass coffin, surrounded by dancing witches.

The Hamelaars have been joined in their search for Morpuys by the wise Nix Assia. On their way to Paay, they fly over the enchanted castle of Lips where Princess Genoveve and all the other inhabitants are bound to sleep 300 years unless a prince kisses her. When Lidwientje insists Prince Tor does the deed, Bertram decides to brave the thick thorn forest. However, both men are sorely disappointed when they finally set eyes on the princess (it's their former adversary witch Eefje Eenoog in disguise).

When the flying pumpkin arrives at Paay, Nix Assia learns her father has gone to Niemendal and her untrustworthy nephew nix Onno Ratsmodee is managing the mirrors of Paay. The Hamelaars need two of these special mirrors to enter and leave the land of Left, where Morpuys is supposed to lie. However, Onno plans to trick them by supplying them with a faulty looking glass.

The Hamelaars have arrived in the land of Left, where everything is mirrored. Before they can get to Morpuys, they meet King Pancras, who promised his daughter to Looie Det the earth giant twenty years earlier. They also meet Jan Soldaat, who has fallen in love with one of the Witches of Dril and plans to defeat the giant for her.

Because of King Mink's disappearance, his granddaughter Prinses Vossestaart is about to assent to the throne of Morpuys. However, there is another pretender to the throne, the purple knight of Gil, who's claim to fame is saving Vossestaart from highwaymen. The Hamelaars discover the truth about this knight from daft puppeteer Zottin Sijs and discover their own Princess Madelein working in a pigsty.

The evil Guurt van Grasp has escaped back to the land of Right and has taken Princess Madelein with him. To complicate matters, she has been turned into a 'Waai', a breeze on the wind. The Hamelaars return to Madelein's mother at castle Bambergen, only to find all the servants have deserted it.
