The scope of this slice of wartime history is so small, it’s almost the movie equivalent of a one-man show. There are perhaps only a dozen speaking roles. Brian Cox is impressive as The Man Who Saved England in its Darkest Hour, but the drama reduces both the man and the historical crisis to trivial status, as little more than a personal emotional crisis: “Winston, the Haunted Imperialist.”

Lee Marvin rose through the ranks of movie stardom as a character actor, delivering mostly villainous supporting turns in many films before finally graduating to leading roles. Regardless of which side of the law he was on however, he projected a tough-as-nails intensity and a two-fisted integrity which elevated even the slightest material. Born February 19, 1924, in New York City, Marvin quit high school to enter the Marine Corps and while serving in the South Pacific was badly wounded in battle when a machine gun nest shot off part of his buttocks and severed his sciatic nerve. He spent a year in recovery before returning to the U.S. where he began working as a plumber. The acting bug bit after filling in for an ailing summer-stock actor and he studied the art at the New York-based American Theater Wing. Upon making his debut in summer stock,...

A bench featured in the opening credits of Bottom is to be unveiled today (November 14) in tribute to Rik Mayall.
Around 7,000 fans had campaigned for the bench to be reinstalled in the same spot in Hammersmith, London, following the death of Mayall in June.
Hammersmith Council have now replaced it, with the inscription: "In Memory of The Man, The Myth, The Legend."
Bottom's opening titles saw Mayall and co-star Adrian Edmondson fighting on the original bench.
Before he died, Mayall had spoken of his disappointment after hearing that the bench at the junction of Queen Caroline Street and Hammersmith Bridge Road had been removed.
The unveiling will include a tribute written by Mayall's Young Ones co-star Nigel Planer. There will also be a comedy sing-song including the theme to The Young Ones, the cast's 'Living Doll' duet with Cliff Richard, and 'Because I'm Evil' from 20th Century Coyote.

What a summer at the movies! The galaxy got guarded. The future days went past, like some sort of extinct age. The planet of the apes stopped rising and started dawning. Our stars had a fault. And also: Lucy!
Hollywood had a rough season at the box office in summer 2014, with overall box-office receipts falling precipitously from last year’s flurry of mega-grossers. Going into this weekend, Guardians of the Galaxy, the highest-grossing film at the summer box-office, has earned about $256 million–which would have made it the fifth highest-grossing movie of summer 2013.

Bill Hader has come a long way since his stint on Saturday Night Live, creating many popular characters and impersonations such as Stefon, Vincent Price and CNN’s Jack Cafferty. He is one of the highlights in such films as Adventureland, Knocked Up, Superbad and Pineapple Express, and so it is easy to see why author Mike Sacks interviewed him for his new book Poking A Dead Frog. In it, Hader talks about his career and he also lists 200 essential movies every comedy writer should see. Xo Jane recently published the list for those of us who haven’t had a chance to read the book yet. There are a ton of great recommendations and plenty I haven’t yet seen, but sadly my favourite comedy of all time isn’t mentioned. That would be Some Like It Hot. Still, it really is a great list with a mix of old and new.

We told you last month about John Simm (the sometimes-bleached-blond Master in the rebooted Doctor Who) in BBC America‘s upcoming original series Intruders, from writer and executive producer Glen Morgan of The X-Files. Now comes word that Mira Sorvino and sci-fi familiar face James Frain (most recently of Grimm and Sleepy Hollow) will be joining him, as filming begins on this body-snatcher-type series:

We first told you that BBC America had given the series green light to novel-based Intruders back in October when it was announced as an original series. I am a huge fan of BBC America original series, as they are nearly always excellent in every way, the beloved Orphan Black being a strong recent example.
The good news continues this month with the announcement that the lead role has been filled by John Simm, whom most of us recognize as The Master during David Tennant‘s tenure as Doctor Who. The only slight tinge of disappointment comes with the recognition that he will most likely be sporting an American accent, as he will be playing a Los Angeles-based detective.
It’s interesting to note that, when the series was first announced, there was a great deal of emphasis on the sci-fi aspect of the series. Now they would almost have...

And the new sci-fi series just keep on coming! How did we get so lucky? The latest news on the new series front is from BBC America, who has announced it has given the green light to 8 episodes of new original series Intruders. Based on Michael Marshall Smith‘s novel The Intruders, with a script by Glen Morgan (The X-Files, Millennium, The Others, The River), the new series is set to begin production in early spring 2014.
The series is about a “secret society devoted to chasing immortality by seeking refuge in the bodies of others.” Excellent.

Fuck Yeah It's Summer On TNT. Here's to hoping the Western Conference Finals go to seven games, because the two best shows of June, Inside the NBA and Franklin & Bash need to run concurrently for as long as humanly possible.
That's right: The season two premiere of Franklin & Bash, TNT's glorious bro-lawyer buddy dramedy, aired last night to rave reviews. Fine, I didn't read any other reviews because I'm functionally illiterate. But I'm a real good guesser, and even a well-trained monkey can bang out a recap every now and then, so let's get started.
We open with a trademark FnB stunt, with Jared Franklin in a water tank to demonstrate that FnB's magician client was misled by the company that manufactured a faulty escape level. Score another win for the baddest boys in litigation!
So. What does Stanton Infeld, the esoteric patriarch of uptight corporate law firm Infeld-Daniels do?...

[1] Last month, we tipped you off [2] to an unusual project by director Edgar Wright. In his third round of programming for the New Beverly Cinema in Los Angeles, California, Wright decided to make the theme "Movies Edgar Has Never Seen" -- and enlisted the help of famous filmmaker pals and fans alike to guide him in picking films he'd never seen, but had always wanted to watch on the big screen. He's now made his selections, with suggestions from people like Quentin Tarantino, Guillermo del Toro, Judd Apatow, and Harry Knowles, and they represent a great mix of genres, tones, eras, and so on. Get the schedule for the program, which runs December 9-16, and read some of Wright's comments after the jump. In his blog, Wright wrote a bit about why he was inspired to fill a schedule with movies that were new to him. I hope in my...

Humbly submitting himself to his own cinematic blindspots!
A smart man knows things; a wise man is smart enough to know that there are things he does not know*.
Or something like that.
For a few weeks now, Edgar Wright has proved himself a wise man, laying bare his cinematic soul, openly confessing to the classics he’s yet to see. (Unless you’re Our Fearless Leader Joe Dante, you have these.) He’s put together lists. He’s pared down lists. And he’s teased us with acronyms, all in anticipation of a special select season of programming at Los Angeles’ finest repertory house, The New Beverly.
And now, Mr. Wright has finally announced the full slate of a new Wright Stuff season at the New Beverly (his third!) full of great gems that have heretofore been left unseen by his eyes. When most people (especially in this town...

Below you will find a list of movie that Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz director Edgar Wright has never seen. Not long ago Wright went out and asked his friends and fans to recommend some movies they thought he may have missed over the last thirty years of his life. He got recommendations from Quentin Tarantino, Daniel Waters, Bill Hader, John Landis, Guillermo Del Toro, Joe Dante, Judd Apatow, Joss Whedon, Greg Mottola, Schwartzman, Doug Benson, Rian Johnson, Larry Karaszeski, Josh Olson, Harry Knowles and hundreds of fans on this blog.
From these recommendations, Wright created a master list of recommended films that were frequently mentioned. The director now wants the fans to choose which of the films on the list he should watch on the big screen.
Wright is holding a film event at the New Beverly Cinema in Los Angeles called Films Edgar Has Never Seen.

Edgar Wright's latest epic project [1] has him partnering with Quentin Tarantino, Judd Apatow, Joss Whedon, Bill Hader, Guillermo Del Toro, Joe Dante, Greg Mottola, Harry Knowles, Rian Johnson and, probably, several of you. Like all of us, Wright has a bunch of classic and cult films he's never seen. Unlike all of us, he has the means to see them for the first time on the big screen and will do just that in December [2] at the New Beverly Cinema in Los Angeles during Films Edgar Has Never Seen. The director of Shaun of the Dead and Scott Pilgrim vs. The World asked both his famous friends (some of which are listed above) and fans to send in their personal must see lists and, from those titles, Wright came up with one mega list from which he'll pick a few movies to watch December 9-16. Bad news for those who have placed bets that Viggo Mortensen was going to be the baddie in Zack Snyder's Superman reboot.
Warner Bros. announced Michael Shannon (Revolutionary Road) has been cast as General Zod, the role that Mortensen was rumored to be up for.
In a statement, Snyder talked about the casting of Shannon and the character of Zod.
Zod is not only one of Superman's most formidable enemies, but one of the most significant because he has insights into Superman that others don't. Michael is a powerful actor who can project both the intelligence and the malice of the character, making him perfect for the role.
Looks like Snyder changed his tune about Zod. In November, the director said Zod was not going to appear in his movie. Zod isn't new to moviegoers. The character appeared in the original Superman and its sequel, played by Terence Stamp.

You may have noticed I'm Mad Men crazy this week. I'm just trying to cram it in before Sunday's premiere. I'll calm down Monday.
I'm so excited I'm about to grab one of the T-Shirts from the Mad Men shop on CafePress. I'm already having trouble choosing but they made it easier for me by denying me some of the designs in men's sizes. Excuse me but what if I want a "Mark Your Man" t-shirt with lipstick prints all over it? I mean, I might. I have been known to embrace the girlie. I think I might go for the "Who's For Dinner?" shirt because I love Ken Cosgrove (Aaron Staton). Nobody else loves Ken but I do not care. I will read any short story he wants me to.
