The Week in Spandex - The Expanding Marvel Cinematic Universe, The Dark Knight Rises, The Amazing Spider-Man, Man of Steel, Arrow and more

21 May 2012 6:24 AM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

Our weekly round-up of the big news stories from the world of movie superheroes…

Once again, Marvel's The Avengers continues to shatter records at the global box office as audiences remain enthralled by the adventures of Earth's Mightiest Heroes. In North America, the Joss Whedon-directed superhero team-up became the fastest film to cross the $400m mark, achieving the feat in just fourteen days (four fewer than it took The Dark Knight back in 2008, albeit with the benefit of higher ticket prices), and it has also overtaken the world-wide haul of Christopher Nolan's blockbuster Bat-sequel, making it the highest grossing comic book movie of all time...

...As if that's not enough to earn bragging rights for Marvel, the film is now also officially Disney's biggest ever hit, having surpassed Toy Story 3 and Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest to sit at #6 in the all-time global chart. The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King »

Marvel's Avengers passes $1billion, overtakes The Dark Knight to become highest-earning superhero movie

14 May 2012 3:19 PM, PDT | The Geek Files | See recent The Geek Files news »

Marvel's superhero epic The Avengers has this weekend crossed the $1billion mark at the global box office, according to studio estimates.

Walt Disney Pictures - which acquired Marvel for $4 billion in 2009 - announced that the film has now earned an estimated $373.2 million in North America and $628.9 million overseas for a worldwide total of $1.0021 billion.

It would mean the film has now surpassed The Dark Knight's $1.0019 billion and climbed to 11th place on the all-time worldwide list.

The top 10 are: Avatar ($2.78 billion), Titanic ($2.14 billion), Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 ($1.33 billion), Transformers: Dark of the Moon ($1.124 billion), The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King ($1.112 billion), Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest ($1.066 billion), Toy Story 3 ($1.063 billion), Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides ($1.044 billion), Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace ($1.026 billion) and Alice in Wonderland ($1.024 billion).

The Avengers is the first Marvel film and fifth Disney release to reach $1 billion. »

The Avengers Joins $1 Billion Club

14 May 2012 12:01 PM, PDT | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Superhero blockbuster The Avengers has become the latest movie to make the ultra-exclusive $1 billion box office club.

The Marvel epic, which stars Robert Downey, Jr., Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth and Scarlett Johannson, raked in a whopping $103.2 million (£64.5 million) in the American market over the weekend (11-13May12), pushing the film's worldwide haul to just over $1.1 billion.

The action movie, which opened around the world at the end of April and on 4 May in North America, becomes only the 10th film to break $1 billion at the box office.

The other projects to accomplish the same money milestone are Titanic, The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest, The Dark Knight, Avatar, Alice in Wonderland, Toy Story 3, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, and most recently Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2. »

The Avengers goes from Zero to $1 Billion in Nineteen Days!

14 May 2012 7:30 AM, PDT | HeyUGuys.co.uk | See recent HeyUGuys news »

After taking the Us box office by absolute storm last weekend, to the tune of a record-breaking $207.4m. in its opening weekend, The Avengers is now the first film to break the $1bn. threshold in 2012 with an estimated $1.002bn., increasing the membership of the billion-dollar club to 12.

The 3D re-release of The Phantom Menace tipped that over the edge to end with $1.026bn., taking an extra $100m. with the added dimension.

And if estimates are right – and last weekend, the estimates actually fell short by about $4m., so these figures could be even better – our predictions earlier this year have been proven right, with The Avengers set to be the first film of 2012 to go from zero to a billion, doing it in just nineteen days, and playing in the Us (naturally its biggest market) for just ten of those days.

It’s estimated that the film took $103m. in »

Explore the Visual Effects and Sound of 'The Avengers'

A nice group of behind-the-scenes goodies have popped up online related to The Avengers and while you may be getting a little tired of hearing about the film already I thought this batch of stuff concerning the team that helped writer/director Joss Whedon and his cast put together the box-office behemoth was worth sharing. First off I have two video pieces, the first comes from the SoundWorks Collection taling with Avengers supervising Sound Editor, Sound Designer, and Re-recording Mixer Christopher Boyes. While the score didn't necessarily impress me, the sound design of the film actually did as I could feel the theater rumbling all around me and I think come Oscar time, Boyes' work on this film may be something we are discussing. After all, it's not as if he is unfamiliar with the little golden man having won four times before for Peter Jackson's King Kong, The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King »

With The Hunger Games threatening to be in the top spot for a fifth week in a row, longer than The Dark Knight and The Lord of the Rings:The Return of the King , we have to look towards a number of unlikely saviors to finally topple the mighty box office titan and give someone else a chance. Ironically, all three new movies will mainly be targeting women, although they'll each be going after different ages and demographics. Based on Steve Harvey's popular bestselling self-help book, Think Like a Man (Screen Gems) is the type of African-American ensemble rom-com we've seen a lot over the years, this one with a superstar cast that includes Regina Hall, Kevin Hart, Meagan Good, Taraji P. Prior to The Hunger Games, the most recent movie to achieve the four-weekend-in-a-row feat was James Cameron / Sam Worthington's Avatar in early 2010. 5 Things You May Not Know About The 'The Godfather Part II'

9 April 2012 10:00 AM, PDT | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

A sprawling three-hour-and-twenty-minute American epic crime film, what can you say about Francis Ford Coppola’s “The Godfather Part II” that hasn’t already been said? Nominated for eleven Academy Awards and winning six, including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Actor in a Supporting Role for Robert De Niro, “The Godfather Part II” was met with tremendous critical acclaim with many proclaiming it had outdone its predecessor. Award-wise, it had. The original had also bagged eleven nominations, but won only three.

This weekend, as we just mentioned in our piece about Coppola’s “The Conversation,” marked the 73rd birthday of the famed director, and yesterday on April 8th, the anniversary of “The Godfather Part II” winning the Academy Award for Best Picture. Curiously enough, while many consider 'Part II' superior, box-office-wise the 3 hour 20 minute running time was audience prohibitive, and the film only grossed $47 million domestically, as opposed to »

Titanic Box Office: Behind The Hunger Games

James Cameron's Titanic movie Titanic 3D was the no. 2 movie on the domestic box-office chart on Wednesday, April 4, according to figures found at Box Office Mojo. Directed by the Marianas Trench's James Cameron, and starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet, Titanic 3D collected $4.37 million at 2,674 theaters, landing right behind The Hunger Games' $4.6 million at 4,137 locations. The Hunger Games has also been around for 13 days; Titanic 3D opened on Tuesday, earning approximately $325,000 at various preview screenings. Directed by Gary Ross, The Hunger Games stars Jennifer Lawrence, Liam Hemsworth, and Josh Hutcherson. At no. 3, Jonathan Liebesman / Sam Worthington / Ralph Fiennes' Wrath of the Titans grossed $2.25 million, followed by Julia Roberts / Armie Hammer / Lily Collins' Mirror Mirror with $1.66 million and Channing Tatum »
