Avatar ushers in 2010 as fourth biggest all-time movie

57 minutes ago | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

James Cameron's blue-peopled behemoth has amassed more than $1bn after only three weekends and may well overtake Titanic as the undisputed champion of the modern box office

The winner

James Cameron's sci-fi extravaganza stayed atop the Us charts after holding on to the box-office crown thanks to an estimated $68.3m (£42m) haul. Avatar has now amassed $352.1m (£217m) in North America after only three weekends and, combined with the $670.2m international run, stands at a jaw-dropping $1.018bn worldwide. In so doing it became only the fifth movie in history to cross $1bn and ranks as the fourth highest global release of all time. Of course, we're not dealing with an exact science here because this box-office data is based on numbers that haven't been adjusted for inflation, so try not to get all self-righteous about it. (I'm talking to you, Gone with the Wind fans.)

Avatar Breaks $1 Billion at Worldwide Box Office

5 hours ago | www.canmag.com | See recent CanMag news »

In its third frame and still running hot! Just about every naysayer has been forced to shove their foot deep into their mouth, as James Cameron's Avatar has posted another weekend's worth of strong numbers with $68.3 million, along with news that the film has passed the one-billion dollar mark worldwide.

Box Office Report: Avatar

Avatar has quickly become the fourth highest grossing movie ever, behind James Cameron's Titanic ($1.8 billion), The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King ($1.12 billion) and Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest ($1.07 billion). Seeing that sci-fi epic has still got plenty of momentum, we can already expect Avatar to become the second highest grossing movie ever; meaning that James Cameron will be responsible for the two biggest earners in history, and they are leading by a huge margin. »

"Avatar" Overtakes "The Dark Knight"

9 hours ago | Dark Horizons | See recent Dark Horizons news »

After just 17 days, James Cameron’s "Avatar" has crossed $1 billion at the global box office and moving ahead of last year's juggernaut "The Dark Knight" which was the previous #4.

In fact if numbers continue along estimates, the film is expected to pass "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest" and "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King" to become second-biggest worldwide release of all time behind only Cameron's "Titanic".

How big is this phenomenon? Domestically Cameron's film took in $68.3 million in its third weekend, easily beating the previous record of a third weekend gross of $45 million garnered by "Spider-Man 3".

At the U.S. box-office it has made $352 million so far, the second-largest grossing film of 2009. It's expected to pass the $402 million that "Transformers Revenge of the Fallen" earned by the weekend - achieving in three weeks what took 'Fallen' nearly four months to achieve.

'Avatar' Rocks New Year's

11 hours ago | Box Office Mojo | See recent BoxOfficeMojo.com news »

This New Year's weekend was the biggest-grossing ever, fueled by the highest gross ever posted by a single movie on the holiday. Easing ten percent, Avatar generated a whopping estimated $68.3 million, claiming the New Year's record from Meet the Fockers' $41.7 million. More importantly, it delivered the highest-grossing third weekend ever, surpassing the first Spider-Man's $45 million, and it raced past the $350 million mark in just 17 days, second only to The Dark Knight's two-week sprint.

Among 2009 releases, Avatar already ranks second to Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen' $402.1 million, which it will soon eclipse. Avatar's performance is so monumental that picture has shot up to the 15th spot on the all time chart and it's likely to give The Dark Knight and Titanic a run for their money. Avatar's costlier 3D tickets help its cause but do not diminish its achievements, and it has blown the roof off the format's previous highs. »

Avatar tops $1billion at box office, soars past The Dark Knight

13 hours ago | The Geek Files | See recent The Geek Files news »

When James Cameron's Avatar came out, there was a lot of talk about whether it would ever come close to the box office total of his previous film, 1997's Titanic.

That film made $1.8billion worldwide to take and, so far, retain the record for the largest global gross of all time.

But the title now looks like it's under threat after Avatar today crossed the $1billion mark.

The film raked in $352million in North America and $670million overseas according to The Numbers, a total of $1.02billion.

The 3D sci-fi epic now stands at No4 in the global chart after just 17 days on release, already passing The Dark Knight and creeping ever closer to Titanic.

The top 10 highest-earning films worldwide are:

1 Titanic (1997) $1.85bn

2 The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003) $1.13bn

3 Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest (2006) $1.07bn

4 Avatar(2009) $1bn

5 The Dark Knight (2008) $1.002bn

"Avatar" reaches $1 billion worldwide in 17 days; "Alvin and the Chipmunks" still going strong overseas

James Cameron's "Avatar" is on its way to the very top of the list of all-time top-grossing films worldwide. Fox's sci-fi action adventure reached a stunning $670.2 million overseas after weekend earnings totaling $133.5 million in 110 territories, which explains why the film has now reached a global cume of $1.02 billion.

Cameron's "Titanic" is still leading the pack with $1.84 billion, followed by "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King" and "The Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest." A lot of folks out there are pretty confident "Avatar" will soon knock some of them out. Given its current results, that may indeed be possible.

Following in second place on the international circuit this weekend was "Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel," which earned $32 million for an overseas total gross of $99.1 million. At No. 3, "Black Lightning" opened with $9.7 million. »

Is The Lord Of The Rings the Movie “Event” of the Last Decade?

18 hours ago | thetorchonline | See recent thetorchonline news »

The incredible resurgence of the fantasy genre, which began in the 1980s and gathered steam in the 1990s, exploded in the 00s. Nowhere is this more obvious than in the amazing success of The Lord of the Rings movie franchise, the three movies of which were all released this decade:  The Fellowship of the Ring (2001), The Two Towers (2002), and The Return of the King (2003). By any measure, the movies were an unparalleled success. Together, they make up the most financially successful movie trilogy of all time, grossing almost  $3 billion worldwide and beating out both Star Wars trilogies (although the original Star Wars trilogy out-grosses Rings when adjusted for inflation). The films received rave reviews, and currently hold a cumulative 94% "fresh" on the RottenTomatoes.com compilation of film reviews -- an extraordinary rating for a single film, much less three. The films were nominated for 30 Academy Awards and won 17 -- the »

Box Office: 'Avatar' passes $1 Billion dollars worldwide

18 hours ago | The Movie Fanatic | See recent The Movie Fanatic news »

There are now five movies in the history of cinema that have made more than $1 billion in worldwide grosses – and James Cameron has directed two of them.

After coming closer than it would have liked to getting edged out of the top spot last week, Avatar dropped only 10% from last week to earn $68.3 million and firmly held on to number one for the third week in a row, almost doubling that of Sherlock Holmes ($38.3 million).

Actually, the top films remained unchanged from last week with Alvin and the Chipmunks ($36.6 million), It’s Complicated ($18.7 million) and The Blind Side ($12.6 million) rounding out the top five.

But the big news this week is Avatar crossing $1 billion worldwide grosses.  Only five films have made that much money ever at the box office: Titanic (1997), The Lotr: The Return of the King (2003), Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest (2006), The Dark Knight (2008) and now Avatar. »

Avatar Crosses $1 Billion Worldwide in Weekend Box Office Win

20 hours ago | TheHDRoom | See recent TheHDRoom news »

Aided by the surcharge on 3D showings, James Cameron's Avatar raked in another $68.3 million this past weekend per studio estimates to bring its domestic cumulative box office total to $352.1 million. Avatar now becomes the highest weekend grossing film in its third weekend of release by smashing the previous $45 million record set by Sam Raimi's Spider-Man.

Avatar will have been in theaters for 17 days through Sunday. For comparison, Cameron's Titanic earned $241 million through the same period.

When factoring in overseas ticket sales of $670 million, Avatar's worldwide gross stands at $1.02 billion and it becomes only the fifth film ever behind Titanic, The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest and The Dark Knight. If Avatar remains strong, Titanic's all-time record of $1.84 billion could be in jeopardy.

Box Office Report - Avatar Looks Unstoppable

20 hours ago | movies.about.com | See recent movies.about.com news »

Could Avatar ultimately challenge Titanic's box office record? James Cameron's mega-budgeted action epic is plowing down records weekend after weekend, so anything could happen. It looks as though, at the very least, The Dark Knight's second place spot on the all-time domestic earners list will likely fall to Avatar. Avatar's box office take is moving along strongly thanks to positive word of mouth and great reviews, and now it's broken the record for the biggest ticket sales for the third weekend of a film's release, a record previously held by Spider-Man according to Box Office Mojo.

And Avatar isn't just thrilling audiences in the United States. Cameron's action-packed drama has brought in $670 million internationally, $352 million domestically, and has now crossed the $1 billion line worldwide. Box Office Mojo reports Avatar's already sitting in fourth place on the all-time worldwide box office chart. Only Titanic, Lord of »

10 New Classics from the Decade

31 December 2009 11:25 PM, PST | Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news »

The ReelzChannel 100 began when we asked Leonard Maltin for his favorite Hidden Gems of the decade. His list led the web team into a general discussion about the best movies of the decade and — after no small amount of debate, arguing, and (we're not proud to say) some petty name-calling — we decided we'd better bring it to an end with a company-wide vote. Then it was just a matter of tallying up the votes and hoping for the best. Lucky for us, ReelzChannel is filled with a staff ranging from movie lovers to movie fanatics. What turned out isn't what you'll find on a critic's best of list — instead it's what movie fans really enjoyed.

In our final day of the ReelzChannel 100, we highlight 10 New Classics from the Decade.
