German director Volker Schlöndorff, who won the Cannes’ Palme d’Or and an Oscar for his 1979 drama “The Tin Drum,” is set to direct a film about how Antonio Vivaldi — the 18th-century Italian composer of “The Four Seasons” — formed what is touted as the world’s first all-female orchestra.
Schlöndorff’s still-untitled depiction of this lesser-known aspect of Vivaldi’s career is based on a book by German writer Peter Schneider, which has been adapted for the big screen by Italian scribe Francesco Piccolo (“My Brilliant Friend”) along with the director.
The plan is for cameras to start rolling later this year on the film, which will mark the first foray into Italian-language cinema by Schlöndorff, who is a fluent speaker. It will be shot entirely in Italy. Casting is still being decided, and sales are likely to be launched at the Cannes market in May.

It's been 41 years since "Cheers" premiered, and 30 years since it's ended. Although other popular sitcoms like "The Bill Cosby Show" and "Newhart" gave it a run for its money, it's clear by now that "Cheers" has most effectively withstood the test of the time. When the average person thinks of '90s sitcoms, they think of "Friends" or "Seinfeld," but when you ask them to name a sitcom from the '80s, "Cheers" is almost always the first to come to mind.
It helps that so much of the "Cheers" cast has continued to have a major presence in pop culture long after the finale, even if they haven't all returned to the sheer height of popularity they had back in the '80s and early '90s. Even many of the actors who have passed away in the years since, like Kirstie Alley who died of stage four colon...

With her spare, acoustic-driven solo work, Kristin Hersh sought to distinguish herself from the harder, post-punk sound of the singer-songwriter’s band Throwing Muses. A dozen albums in, she’s successfully carved out her own lane, maintaining a touch of the Muses’s jaggedness while largely eschewing electric instrumentation. While her latest album, Clear Pond Road, isn’t as radically stripped down as her earliest solo efforts, it’s still a departure from 2018’s more rock-oriented Possible Dust Clouds.
Clear Pond Road draws from a wide range of influences: The album’s cello arrangements take a page from the psychedelic pop of Love and the Beatles, while “Palmetto” is infused with the Delta blues in the vein of Son House. In the end, though, Hersh’s acoustic guitar is the album’s driving force, while at the same time avoiding the obvious tropes of roots music.

The film, heading into production Tuesday after nearly a decade in development, is based on an original story by Schnabel. Julia Fox, Steven Van Zandt and Taylour Paige are also set to star. Details with regard to the characters the new additions to the cast will be playing have not been disclosed.
Schnabel, Kaye and Jeremy Steckler are producing, with George Paaswell serving as executive producer.
Dorff recently appeared in Potsy Ponciroli’s Western Old Henry, and on Fox’s Deputy. He’s also previously been seen in films including I’ll Find You, Leatherface, The Iceman, Somewhere, Public Enemies, World Trade Center, Cold Creek Manor, Zoolander, Blade and I Shot Andy Warhol. She’s also appeared in such films as Rifkin’s Festival, Cagefighter, American Dresser, The Little Mermaid, Blockers, 9/11, Staten Island Summer, Killer Joe, P.S. Unfortunately, Desna has crossed over from accidental to intentional violence during her effort to become a drug kingpin.
The boss lady continued her descent into becoming a less likable character on Claws Season 4 Episode 6.
In the beginning, it appeared that Desna might be mellowing back to Momma Desna.
She and Tony had a double date with Dean and Eve; the upshot was that both men discovered their roles were "boy toys."
New-agey Eve was kinder in explaining that fact, but Desna not so much. Still, that stance gave them a common bond.
Desperate to find a way to launder the income from Claws Up, Desna decided to set up a second Nail Artisans.
Desna chose Jenn as the new salon's manager despite their recent quarreling. Only, with all the chaos in her life, Jenn was less ready than ever to take on that role.
Jenn is adrift after the Family...

Above: Polish poster for Young Törless (Volker Schlöndorff, West Germany, 1966). Design by Kazimierz Krolikowski (1921-1994).
Since Volker Schlöndorff’s newest film, Diplomacy, is opening in New York next week (full disclosure, I work for the distributor) I thought I’d take a look back at the posters for the 25 or more films he has made over he past half a century. Though I quickly discovered that from the late 80s onwards there is little of note (Palmetto, anyone?), I have found some gorgeous posters from the first twenty years of his career, when Schlöndorff was one of the most important directors of the New German Cinema. What is striking is the wide variety of looks given to some of his films, most particularly the international posters for his breakout success The Lost Honor of Katharina Blum which he co-directed with his then-wife Margarethe von Trotta (though shame on the French...

German director Volker Schlöndorff ("Palmetto," "The Tin Drum") is returning to the U.S. for the New York-based feature "Montauk".
The story follows a European writer who heads to New York for a few days to assist in the opening of his play in a Brooklyn off-Broadway theatre.
He finds himself meeting an old flame, each was the other’s greatest love but they failed at it. During a weekend, they try to see whether they can pick up the pieces.
Irish playwright and novelist Colm Toibin is co-writing the script with the filmmaker. Filming takes place next winter.

Legendary German director Volker Schlöndorff, who won an Oscar and a Palme d’Or for “The Tin Drum” back in 1979, has been in and out of critical favor ever since, last releasing a film in 2007 (“Ulzhan”). He’s back, on the European cinema scene at least, with France-set World War II story “Calm at Sea,” which played yesterday at the Göteborg International Film Festival (review to come), and when we spoke with the director here earlier, he told us in a little more detail about his upcoming projects, one of which will mark a return to the U.S. for the first time since 1998’s potboiler noir “Palmetto,” starring Woody Harrelson, Gina Gershon and Chloe Sevigny. “Montauk” is the title of the New York-based project, on which Schlöndorff is working with Irish playwright and novelist Colm Toibin (whose book “Brooklyn” is itself being developed into a movie with Rooney Mara.
