The Notable Films of 2010: Part Three

17 December 2009 11:42 PM, PST | Dark Horizons | See recent Dark Horizons news »

Dinner for Schmucks

Opens: July 23rd 2010

Cast: Steve Carell, Paul Rudd, Zach Galifianakis, Bruce Greenwood, David Walliams

Director: Jay Roach

Summary: A renowned publisher encourages his friends to invite the most pathetic guests possible for their weekly dinner party. Just as they find the most pathetic man yet, the host is injured and ends up trapped with the man all night long.

Analysis: A remake of director Francis Veber's 1998 César award-winning "Le Diner des cons", 'Schmucks' is one of the highest profile comedies of next year with one of the strongest casts for the genre in recent memory. It also marks the return of "Austin Powers" and "Meet the Parents" helmer Jay Roach who has produced several films in recent years but hasn't directed since 2004's "Meet the Fockers".

The question now lies not in the performers or director but the material itself and whether a Gallic comedy can »

Robert Sikoryak collection released

3 December 2009 8:22 PM, PST | digitalspy | See recent digitalspy news »

Publisher Drawn and Quarterly has compiled the work of parody cartoonist Robert Sikoryak in a single volume titled Masterpiece Comics. The satirical artist made a name for himself in the 1990s with his comedic crossover projects. Some of his notable strips have combined Batman with Dostoyevsky's Crime and Punishment, John Stanley's Little Lulu with The Scarlet Letter and Ziggy with Voltaire's Candide. "When I was putting the book together, I had some trouble trying to reconcile the 12 different strips that were created over many years," Sikoryak told Cbr. "I had always imagined them being in one book, but I didn't have an organising principle for them. It became clear that I had to find some structure. I'm all about (more) »

By All Means, Judge These Books by Their (New) Covers

2 December 2009 9:01 PM, PST | Vanity Fair | See recent Vanity Fair news »

This fall, bookshelves are as colorful as the changing foliage, thanks to the decision by several publishers to roll out redesigns of beloved titles. “Publishers realize that we are catering to readers, including students, who are more design-savvy and more visual. In a competitive marketplace, the challenge is to get the consumer to spot your book and pick it up,” says Elda Rotor, the editorial director of Penguin Classics. Late this summer, Penguin, long a purveyor of iconic black-and-orange-themed paperbacks, introduced “Couture Classics.” The publishing house commissioned fashion illustrator Ruben Toledo to “dress” some of its best-selling heroines: Hester Prynne (The Scarlet Letter), Catherine Earnshaw (Wuthering Heights), and Elizabeth Bennet (Pride and Prejudice). His baroque but modern designs give sultry new life to those familiar plots and characters. Last month, Penguin released Victorian novels, such as The Picture of Dorian Gray and Jane Eyre, in clothbound editions featuring lacy patterns »

Jm Coetzee's Disgrace | Film

Theo Tait on the transition from page to screen of Coetzee's novel

It's often said that good novels make bad films: they're too nuanced, too complex, too long to fit into a slot two hours long. Readers don't thank film-makers for trampling on their treasured mental visions of a book – for making Sebastian Flyte shout "All you ever wanted was to fuck my sister!" at Charles Ryder, as in last year's film of Brideshead Revisited, or for casting Demi Moore as Hester Prynne in The Scarlet Letter or Nicolas Cage as Captain Corelli. The resulting adaptations tend to be, at worst, a travesty (Bonfire of the Vanities, Love in the Time of Cholera) and, at best, faithful and bloodless (Atonement, Revolutionary Road) – weighed down by the desire to do justice to a big reputation.

Few contemporary novels have a bigger reputation than Disgrace, Jm Coetzee's chilly, shocking 1999 tale of post-apartheid South Africa, »

Celebrity Biography: Emma Stone

15 November 2009 9:21 AM, PST | PopStar | See recent PopStar news »

Emily Jean Stone, better known as Emma Stone, was born on November 6, 1988, in Scottsdale, Arizona, the daughter of Jeff and Krista Stone, and the older sister of Spencer. Stone started acting at a relatively young age, appearing in a school production of The Wind in the Willows when she was just 11. Regional theater appearances followed and eventually, at 15, Stone convinced her parents -- using popcorn and a PowerPoint presentation, of all things, keyed to the Madonna song "Hollywood" -- to let her take a serious shot at acting, which meant relocating to Los Angeles. "I just always wanted to act from birth,” Stone told Saturday Night Magazine. "I think I was drawn to comedy originally because when I was really young, by the time I was eight, I had seen movies like The Jerk (1979), Animal House (1978), and Planes, Trains & Automobiles (1987) with my dad, and I knew them by heart. I loved them, »

The Mentalist: The Scarlet Letter

1 October 2009 10:40 PM, PDT | AOL - TVSquad | See recent AOL - TVSquad news »

(S02E02) Tonight's episode of The Mentalist was an incisive look at how the ... Hey That Was Starsky!

Yes, Paul Michael Glaser made an appearance in this episode, and it's good to see him in something else besides those fix-your-credit commercials.

This season seems to be about the personal lives of Jane and Lisbon a lot more than the first season was, how the search for Red John is affecting both of them (Jane is on the outside of the investigation; Jane is seeing a psychiatrist because of what happened in the season finale). Last season I didn't want every other episode to be about Red John, and I still don't, but I'm more intrigued by the Red John investigation than the murder-of-the-week. Where last season the tension in the Cbi regarding cases and who was in charge was scattered here and there; that tension seems to be a theme this second season. »

Mini Recap — The Mentalist 2.02 "The Scarlet Letter"

1 October 2009 10:09 PM, PDT | TVovermind.com | See recent TVovermind.com news »

What better way to show the irreverent nature of Patrick Jane (Simon Baker) than to start off The Mentalist "The Scarlet Letter" with a yawn. Apparently sleeping through Lisbon's (Robin Tunney) briefing in the car, Jane awakens to find the Cbi team on a bridge in Sacramento. He's quickly briefed by Cho (Tim Kang) and Rigsby (Owain Yeoman) that a state senator's aide named Kristin Marley has been found dead underneath the bridge. Since she was rumored to be having an affair with the senator's husband, it's not clear at first whether it's a suicide or murder.

Throughout the investigation, Jane and the Cbi team find out several things about Kristin's personal life. First, that her step-brother was trying to force her into being his alibi for a car-jacking. Second, that she was a romantic who dreamed about being a senator and traveling to far-off places. She collected mementos from her travels, »

Scarlet Letter (2004) Review

10 August 2009 8:22 PM, PDT | Beyond Hollywood | See recent Beyond Hollywood news »

Originally released in 2004 and now being re-issued on DVD, “The Scarlet Letter” is sadly best known for having been the last film to feature actress Lee Eun Joo, who took her own life shortly after production had been completed. Bearing no relation to the famous novel by Nathaniel Hawthorne with which it shares its title, the complex drama also marked the third and last directorial effort to date from Daniel H. Byun, previously responsible for “Interview”. Although not particularly popular upon its original domestic run, in part due to its adult themes and content, the film has since enjoyed a successful international release, and has brought in more curious viewers, no doubt mainly due to the tragic real life events which followed – a shame, since the film is a superior and mature mystery in its own right, which although flawed stands out from the crowd of the usual Korean melodramas. »

‘Twilight’ Star Cam Gigandet Earning ‘A’ For Effort In Currently-Filming Flick

19 June 2009 12:24 PM, PDT | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

He played a villainous vampire in “Twilight” and has won Best Fight at the MTV Movie Awards two years running — so, it’s safe to say we all know that Cam Gigandet is a really good bad boy. Currently, the in-demand star is hard at work on “Easy A,” a comedic spin on “The Scarlet Letter” that has him setting aside the vampire attire and instead cloaking himself in mortality and school clothes.

“The whole idea is that people [develop] their personas in high school,” Gigandet explained about the film, which stars Emma Stone as a modern-day Hester Prynne, the “Scarlet” outcast forced to wear a red “A” to mark her shame. “Whether that’s true or not, you never know until afterwards. I’m one of those characters who you think is one person, where he turns out to not be.”

Although Gigandet isn’t the above-the-title star of the currently-shooting flick, »

'Easy A' Gets One Heck of a Cast

4 June 2009 5:15 PM, PDT | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

When word about Easy A, otherwise known as The Scarlet Letter hits high school, it didn't sound like the most desirable or charming comedy -- a young woman pretends she's promiscuous to get ahead. (yay) But now ... Well, now there's a killer cast merged with a plot summary that could easily make this a must-see film.

Variety reports that the comedy will, more specifically, follow a high school girl (Emma Stone) who, "after being ostracized by a false rumor she's loose, uses the rumor mill to her advantage, pitting puritanical students and teachers against their liberal counterparts." And who will some of these people be? Oh, just Lisa Kudrow, Alyson Michalka, Thomas Haden Church, Patricia Clarkson, Stanley Tucci, Penn Badgley, Cam Gigandet, Malcolm McDowell, and Daniel Bird. How's that for a supporting cast? The fact that this is a teen comedy and not some star-ridden ensemble drama makes the roster all the more impressive. »

Cam Gigandet, Lisa Kudrow And Penn Badgley Join Emma Stone In ‘Easy A’

4 June 2009 8:00 AM, PDT | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

Earlier this year, Emma Stone decided to emulate Nathaniel Hawthorne’s Hester Prynne (you know, “The Scarlet Letter”) for an “Easy A.” She was quickly joined by Amanda Bynes, but with the film set to begin shooting in a few days, she’ll need additional people to help and shame her towards a bad reputation. Variety has the list of who those people will be: Cam Gigandet, Lisa Kudrow, Alyson Michalka, Thomas Haden Church, Patricia Clarkson, Stanley Tucci, Penn Badgley, Malcolm McDowell and Daniel Bird.

The plot has changed a little since it was last in the trades. Initially, Stone was going to play a student who faked being promiscuous in order to gain attention. Now she’s a student who is ostracized thanks to a false rumor of her behaving badly with the guys, and she decides to use the rumor mill to her advantage. She pits puritanical students and teachers against their liberal, »

Amanda Bynes Gets Two New Films

2 June 2009 11:56 PM, PDT | EmpireOnline | See recent EmpireOnline news »

Amanda Bynes may generally confine herself to unremarkable teen movies but she has some genuine comedy chops, which is why we're rather pleased to hear that she has two films lined up with Screen Gems: first a supporting role in Easy A and secondly a starring vehicle.Easy A is the high school comedy based (very loosely) on Nathaniel Hawthorne's literary classic The Scarlet Letter, as Emma Stone's student is tortured by a false rumour that she has lost her virginity and decides to exploit the rumour mill for her own benefit. Bynes will play the puritanical high school queen bee.Secondly Bynes will get her own starring vehicle, but there are no details on that yet. Given that She's The Man is something of a guilty pleasure here, let's hope that her next effort can transition to outright good. »

Emma Stone becomes a slut, hopes to nab that 'Easy A'

Emma Stone, who gained notoriety through her breakout performance in The House Bunny, is set to headline the upcoming comedy Easy A. Directed by Will Gluck (Fired Up) and written by Bert V. Royal, Easy A retells the classic story of The Scarlet Letter as a gal (Stone) pretending to be a slut in school because --c'mon it's easier to pass out BJs in gym class than actually study.

Stone is currently filming the horror/comedy Zombieland for Columbia and will next appear in the Matthew McConaughey and Jennifer Garner rom-com Ghosts of Girlfriends Past.

'The Scarlet Letter' Turns Into an 'Easy A'

30 March 2009 7:01 AM, PDT | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

It looks like we've got our next Emma-style revamp, only this time, it's led by an Emma, rather than being a Clueless adaptation of Jane Austen's novel. Variety reports that Emma Stone, Jonah Hill's cute paramour in Superbad, is going to star in Will Gluck's new comedy called Easy A -- the next film to turn the classics loose in the halls of a modern high school. The latest piece of literature on the chopping block: Nathaniel Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter.

A New York playwright named Bert V. Royal adapted the classic into the story of a girl in high school who finds that her life is reflecting the infamous Hester Prynne's, "after she pretends to be the school slut in hopes she'll benefit from the notion she's promiscuous." Get the title? The scarlet "A" for adultery mixed with the notion of grades? They definitely get »
