Johnny “Bananas” Devenanzio undoubtedly holds a prominent place as one of the most controversial participants in the extensive chronicles of MTV’s The Challenge.
Ever since he first graced the screen on The Real World: Key West, Bananas has become an integral part of the reality competition. As the individual with the most seasons under his belt (and the highest number of victories), he has certainly encountered his fair share of colossal blunders.
Here are seven times when Bananas was the absolute worst on The Challenge.

In The Challenge: Rivals 3, Bananas treated his partner, Sarah, terribly throughout their entire journey. To make matters worse, he put on a fake act of reconciliation for the cameras. He betrayed her in the end by swiping her share of the prize money, a whopping $137,500.

Another apocalypse; another side of Bob Dylan. The man really knows how to pick his moments. Dylan has brilliantly timed his new masterwork for a summer when the hard rain is falling all over the nation: a plague, a quarantine, revolutionary action in the streets, cities on fire, phones out of order. Rough and Rowdy Ways is his first batch of new songs in 8 years, and it’s an absolute classic—it has the bleak majesty of latter-day Dylan albums like Modern Times and Tempest, yet it goes beyond them,...

The Family Karma crew may have ditched Miami for Key West, but they weren't able to escape the ever-growing drama between Brian Benni and Monica Vaswani. Things kick off when the group is out to dinner in this exclusive preview of Sunday's new episode, with Monica exacerbating an already tense conversation by telling Bali Chainani—who's simply inquiring about any potential "chemistry" between the flirty pair—to "shut up." "Don't scream at us because we ask you about it," Bali says while venting in a confessional interview. Joe Dante takes an alternately nostalgic and clear-eyed look at boyhood life in Key West circa 1962 where the busy military base is a daily reminder of nuclear era nerves and the movie theater is the only escape. A bigger-than-life John Goodman plays a free-wheeling director who brings his latest fright film to town in order to gin up excitement while the jets overhead inspire a different kind of anxiety. Co-starring Dante perennials Robert Picardo and Dick Miller and with a touching performance from Cathy Moriarty as Goodman’s long-suffering partner in barnstorming and ballyhoo.

When Americans think of Cuba, we tend to think of a place, and not a people. The same was true of East Germany, it’s still true of North Korea, and it will always be true of countries that are defined by their inaccessibility. Borders are blinding, and islands are isolated by more than just water. Only 105 miles separate Havana from Key West, but you can’t see anything on the horizon when you stand at the bottom tip of the United States and stare into the ocean.

What's good?
I'm going to keep it short (pun unintended) this week. The choice to recommend short films that I am extremely fond off for more mood-setting Halloween season watching might seem uneventful to most. But the occasion is of celebration of an event that might resonate with some South Florida filmgoing readers. The Key West-based lesbian apocalypse horror short Buzzcut by Jon Rhoads and Mike Marrero has just won Best Film at FilmGate Miami's monthly 'I'm Not Gonna Move to L.A.' festival in the middle of its festival tour and if you follow me on Motorbreath, you might have seen me singing the praises of that short wishing better things for it.
So, in anticipation of the day that short might be more easily accessible to everyone, here are 3 horror shorts that I usually find myself indulging in to get into the Halloween spirit.

Singular filmmaker Harmony Korine has some high hopes for his latest feature, though fans of the indie auteur hoping to enjoy the full scope of his vision might have to travel a little further afield to enjoy it as it was meant to be seen. Or, more appropriately, smelled. In a new interview with Telerama (via The Playlist), Korine opens up about an ambitious — and delightfully bonkers — plan to really steep his audience in the next film, the stoner comedy “The Beach Bum,” set to star Matthew McConaughey and Snoop Dogg in a Cheech and Chong-esque misadventure.
In short: Korine wants to get you high. Literally.

Pity the poor exhibitors in 1953 that splurged on 3-D equipment, only to see the payroll soar and the profits fall. Nope, Anamorphic Widescreen was the innovation that swept the world. It proved perfect for stories with scenic grandeur, such as Fox’s very early mini-epic shot on Florida locations. Thanks to Bernard Herrmann’s impressive music score, this one’s not going away.

While the major venues of the Key West Film Festival luckily made it through both Hurricanes Harvey and Irma with little damage, the rest of the community the festival calls home did not. To that end, the annual event — which bills itself as “Passion Meets Paradise” — is working towards assisting in rebuilding efforts around the Key West area.
In a new call for action, the festival’s Founder and Chairman A. Brooke Christian, recalls why Key West inspired the festival to begin with, sharing, “Six years ago, we committed to Key West to host our film festival because of the vibrancy and tenacity of its people. The Hemingway Home cats are making it out better than some humans post-Hurricane Irma because there's enough food to feed all 55 of them for the next 4 weeks. We spoke with a Hemingway Home employee who told us the place picked up 300 lbs of cat food before Irma hit. Normally the kitties go through about 80 lbs a week, so there's plenty of grub to get them through the next month. Key West, where the famed home sits,...

When it comes to keeping the wild animals of Florida safe from Hurricane Irma, zoos, sanctuaries and rescues get creative.
For one animal welfare non-profit in Key West, Florida, this meant sending its critters into the clink.
According to ABC News, the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office Animal Farm, an animal rescue that takes in local abandoned, confiscated, abused and donated creatures of all kinds, decided to relocate its residents to the nearby Stock Island Detention Center to ride out the storm in safety.
The animals, which include a sloth, ponies, llamas, snakes, alligators and more, are no strangers to a life behind bars.

Don’t Try This at Home! Video Shows Meteorologist Nearly Get Blown Over by 117 Mph Winds in Key West
Meteorologist Simon Brewer posted a video on Sunday morning of what happened after his fellow meteorologist Justin Drake got out of his car and came face-to-face with Hurricane Irma in Key West, Florida.
Irma made landfall on the Keys early Sunday morning with triple-digit wind gusts and heavy rain that had already wrecked havoc in the Caribbean.
In the video Drake, who had previously appeared on The Weather Channel series Storm Riders, can clearly be seen struggling to maintain his balance as winds whip against him. It appeared he was trying to get a reading of the storm.

Arthur Penn’s detective movie is one of the best ever in the genre, one that rewards repeat viewings particularly well. Gumshoe Harry Moseby compartmentalizes his marriage, his job, his past and the greedy Hollywood has-beens he meets, not realizing that everything is interconnected, and fully capable of assembling a world-class conspiracy. Gene Hackman tops a sterling cast in the film that introduced most of us to Melanie Griffith.

Remakes are not always bad things. Take, for example, The Breaking Point, based on a novel by Ernest Hemingway. First published in 1937, To Have and Have Not followed the adventures of Harry Morgan, a fishing boat captain in Key West, who is forced into the black market, ferrying contraband between Florida and Cuba. Seven years later, it was adapted for the big screen by director Howard Hawks, based on a screenplay credited to Jules Furthman and William Faulkner (?!). The film departed significantly from its source material, becoming a romantic, wartime thriller with comic elements, featuring the first screen appearance by Lauren Bacall, who famously fell in love with Humphrey Bogart during production. I've seen Hawks' version of To Have and Have Not so...

You can tell it’s film noir — even the cabin cruiser has Venetian blinds. Ernest Hemingway’s favorite film adaptation of his work is this uncompromised story of a good man taking a criminal course on the high seas.
