'Highlander' Remake: There Can Be Only One...Or Not

22 September 2009 11:39 PM, PDT | GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news »

I'm fairly convinced we don't need another Highlander movie. The first one, released in the mid-1980s, was pretty decent and had an interesting story. The sequels, however, couldn't have been much worse. Honestly, I thought they made Highlander II: The Quickening to grease the rails for bankruptcy declarations.

But Summit Entertainment is bringing back Connor McCloud - or at least the mythology of the immortals - for a remake of Highlander to be helmed by Fast & Furious director Justin Lin. Iron Man co-writers Matt Holloway and Art Marcum are taking aim at the script and that could be a good sign. Then again, they also co-wrote Punisher: War Zone. That movie's as bad as the Highlander sequels.

It is the job of studio bosses to sound excited about their projects, but...really? Summit's Patrick Wachsberger says of Highlander, "We are privileged to have this amazing opportunity to reinvent one of the great franchises. »

New 'Highlander' Movie on the Way

21 September 2009 9:20 PM, PDT | CinemaSpy | See recent CinemaSpy news »

There can be only one; it’s been the tagline throughout the 'Highlander' movie and television franchise. Unfortunately, for much of that time, the "one" could have referred to the total number of Highlander films that were actually good.

Now it appears Summit Entertainment has an opportunity to change that. According to Variety, director Justin Lin and producer Neal Moritz have been hired to revitalize the once-popular science-fiction/fantasy property, which concerns sword-wielding immortals battling one another down through the ages.

The original 1986 Highlander, which starred Christopher Lambert, Sean Connery and Clancy Brown, and was directed by Russell Mulcahy, was a bigger success in Europe than in the United States. Meanwhile, despite retaining the same director and stars as the first film, the futuristic 1991 sequel Highlander 2: The Quickening is considered among the most incomprehensible movies ever made.

‘Dark Knight’ Producers Making Futuristic Robin Hood Flick

7 August 2009 7:59 AM, PDT | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

Risky Business Blog has a story claiming that Warner Bros. and the producers of The Dark Knight and 300 are set to bring a futuristic take on the legend of Robin Hood to the big screen. This new comes close on the heels of Universal and Ridley Scott’s cinematic re-imagining of the classic Robin Hood tale, which stars Russell Crowe and is due out next summer.

Who knew that Robin Hood would be making such a big comeback in the new millennium?

The yet-untitled “Future Robin Hood” will apparently be a “futuristic action adventure” set in a dystopian London where a band of thieves seek to restore hope to the downtrodden populace through the classic Robin Hood practice of taking from the Rich (and/or powerful) and giving to the poor.

Signed-on to helm the film is TV commercial director Nicolai Fuglsig, who originally wowed producers at Atlas Entertainment (Batman Begins, »

A Russell Mulcahy 3-D Shark Movie Should Really Be Bigger News

15 May 2009 8:02 AM, PDT | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

I demand that people pay attention to this. I know that Russell Mulcahy isn't exactly a hot property these days, but still. Mulcahy has been reliably churning out B-movies for more than two decades now. Recently he even managed to make the Resident Evil franchise rebound a little from the unwatchable second film. He's got a movie with the year's coolest title in the pipeline, Give 'Em Hell, Malone. And before all that, of course, came Highlander. Come on, people. Highlander. (Yes, yes, I know, also Highlander 2: The Quickening. Shut up.)

Mulcahy has signed up for an Australian shark movie called Bait, which will shoot on the Gold Coast this summer, and will be in 3-D. Yes, yes, I know: Jaws 3-D. Shut up. We haven't had a good shark movie since Deep Blue Sea ten years ago (Open Water, though awesome, does not count), and I'm hankering to see one. »

Jean Claude Van Damme Fights Vinnie Jones

13 May 2009 1:53 AM, PDT | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

Jean Claude Van Damme is still working on that comeback. This time he's getting help from director Russell Mulcahy. THR says Jcvd will face off against Vinnie Jones in a Mulcahy movie called Weapon. In it, they'll play rival assassins. The film's plot description seems to boil down mostly to their choice of killing instrument. Vinnie is a master sharpshooter and Van Damme is particularly fond of using a knife. Mulcahy used to know a thing or two about mano a mano action movies. He's probably best known for directing Highlander back in 1986. Unfortunately he also directed Highlander II: The Quickening, and my love of The Shadow aside, Russell's career went missing in action. He's seen a resurgence in recent years. In 2007 he directed the mildly successful sequel Resident Evil: Extinction and his upcoming movie Give em' Hell, Malone with Thomas Jane and Ving Rhames is getting some positive buzz. »
