Terror Tweets: Scream 4 Update, Pyun Posts Tales Rough Cuts, Eclipse Nearly Wrapped

25 October 2009 12:35 PM, PDT | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

Updates on three different projects have come in over the weekend via Twitter, and rather than do separate stories on each, we've got them all right here ... down & dirty, quick & easy ... just how we know you like it!

Last week we noticed a few stories pop up regarding the possibility of Scream 4 being in 3D. Not having any confirmation, we waited to hear more, which everyone did when Scream writer Kevin Williamson debunked the rumor as follows: "What is this Scream 4 in 3D? First I heard of it." Then, an hour later came, "Guys? Really? 3D? Nahhhhh." Hopefully he won't be pressured into changing his tune. We have enough 3D projects floating around out there already, right?

Dread Central has been following the progress of Tales of an Ancient Empire, Albert Pyun's unofficial follow-up to The Sword and the Sorcerer, for a while now; and Pyun is »

Kevin Sorbo does his best Han Solo in clip from Tales Of An Ancient Empire

14 October 2009 11:52 AM, PDT | QuietEarth.us | See recent QuietEarth news »

Director Albert Pyun (Cyborg, Nemesis) returns to the genre that launched his career in Tales of the an Ancient Empire, the unofficial sequel to his 1982 indie hit "The Sword and the Sorcerer." An extended clip, featuring fantasy veteran Kevin Sorbo, has appeared on the film's official site. In it, Sorbo does his best Han Solo impression as he haggles with the princess over payment for some mercenary services. The cinematography is probably the best thing about the clip. Everything else about the clip is fairly television quality, though I'm definitely looking forward to seeing more.

Synopsis:

The sword and sorcery epic, written by Cynthia Curnan, tells the story of a princess forced on a quest to recruit the greatest warriors of the ancient world to save her kingdom from a demonic sorceress. But the odyssey to find them reveals a secret past for all.

Did we mention that Val Kilmer's in this? »

He-Man Leaves Warners

10 September 2009 1:00 AM, PDT | EmpireOnline | See recent EmpireOnline news »

He-Man has sheathed his magic sword, reigned in Battle Cat and stomped back to Eternia, having failed to return to live-action big-screen fruition with Warner Bros. and Joel Silver's Silver Pictures.Variety reports that toy manufacturers and burgeoning movie moguls Mattel failed to see eye to eye over the project and "reached a mutual decision to let the option lapse". It's expected that the film will now be set up elsewhere, and that Kung-Fu Panda director John Stevenson will stay with it. Warners can console themselves that they still have Hot Wheels to play with.He-Man's last big screen outing was the 1987 Masters of the Universe, with Dolph Lundgren in the furry pants and Frank Langella as Skeletor (only slightly less dastardly than Richard Nixon). There were plans for a sequel directed by Albert Pyun, but they collapsed, and the project morphed, somehow, into Cyborg, starring Jean-Claude Van Damme. »

An unearthed Albert Pyun gem? No it's the promo reel for Pa flick After The Fall

5 March 2009 12:37 PM, PST | QuietEarth.us | See recent QuietEarth news »

There's a moment in this promo reel for After the Fall where I thought "we're in Albert Pyun country here people." A futuristic soldier, covered in warpaint, fires a rocket from what looks like a robotic arm. How cool is that!

We know virtually nothing about the film's plot but steampunk cyber-soldiers, a band of rebel soldiers fighting for freedom in a post-apocalyptic wasteland, and a whole lot of 80s machismo makes Randolph Scott's an 80s style flick we're curious to see more from.

Within a nation turned wasteland. Hunted by an army of darkness. They would find the courage to fight for the future.

You can see the test footage after the break and it's worth it if you've always been looking for film that's like a cross between Cyborg, Nemesis, and Captain Power: Soldiers of the Future. Thanks to Mary Alice for pointing it out!

Before the Oscars, They Belonged to Us, Part 2

25 February 2009 2:52 AM, PST | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

Disclaimer: This article may contain sarcasm; irony and “LOLs” proceed with caution.

Our second stab at the Oscars contains make-up effects and score (read part 1 here). The make-up effects, followed by the visual effects and technical awards, remain my favorite parts of the show; here you got to see your heroes: Rick Baker, Howard Berger, Chris Walas or Rob Bottin in the audience. Even the great Stan Winston could have been out there, back in the day. Though best known for his “visual effects” wins—he brought home an Oscar for best make-up in 1991 for Terminator 2: Judgment Day.

Here genre fans can rejoice, Greg Cannom brought home the gold, again, for The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. Cannom, a genre elder, worked alongside (just to name a few) Fincher, Coppola, Landis, Dante, Blatty, and Cohen creating all sorts of character and creature make-ups.

Hey Warner!! Where's my Road Warrior Se dvd!? + Nine other Pa films that deserve better on DVD

13 January 2009 12:34 PM, PST | QuietEarth.us | See recent QuietEarth news »

Alright Warner Brothers Home Entertainment it's time for you to listen up. We've been waiting long enough for you to finally get around to turning The Road Warrior, arguably the most influential post-apocalyptic film ever made, into a kick ass Special Edition Collector's dvd. Remember last year's 5 Disc Blade Runner Collector's Edition? I hope you were paying attention.

Actually scratch that. Why is it that every major trilogy has been turned into a smashing collectors boxed set except The Mad Max trilogy? Where's my 10-Disc Mad Max boxed set a la The Matrix Trilogy? Huh? Please tell me you're not waiting for George Miller to make Mad Max: Fury Road because, honestly, that ain't happening any time soon.

Of course Warner Bros. isn't alone in their crimes against home entertainment. Neglect of our favorite genre is rampant on DVD. After the break are ten Pa films that are still awaiting DVD royal treatment. »

First Images From Albert Pyun’s Sword And The Sorcerer Sequel Tales Of An Ancient Empire!

4 January 2009 7:51 AM, PST | Twitch | See recent Twitch news »

[Updated with another piece of promo art]

We first brought news of the impending sequel to classic 80s fantasy flick The Sword And The Sorcerer back in April and while production was delayed some by this past year’s labor uncertainty and while the cast has undergone some slight alterations things are now up and running, with principal photography now freshly begun.  Here’s how director Albert Pyun first described the project to us:  “It’s got a sexy sorceress, hordes of demonic vampires, a giant serpent, sea pirates, nasty sword (and axe, spear, leg of cow) fights and gore and nudity galore. Everything that a rousing adventure needs to have.”

Though the project has changed some since it began life as a direct sequel to Pyun’s The Sword And The Sorcerer there are still direct links between the two films.  Starring?  Here are the notables:  Kevin Sorbo (Hercules) and Christopher Lambert (The Highlander) are the male leads, »

First Look at Tales of an Ancient Empire

2 January 2009 10:54 PM, PST | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

It's gone through a couple of cast modifications and a change in filming locations since we first heard about it back in April '08, but Tales of an Ancient Empire, Albert Pyun's follow-up to The Sword and the Sorcerer, is finally under way. And we've got your first look at some stills to prove it!

Tales now stars Melissa Ordway as Tanis, a princess who must find and unite the five greatest warriors of the world to save her kingdom from a demonic sorceress. But the odyssey to find them reveals a secret past for all. Two more pictures of Ordway can be found below along with (from left to right) Janelle Taylor, Kevin Sorbo, and Inbar Lavi. The last shot is a very rough, early composite of Tanis ready to do battle against whatever evil may come her way.

Christopher Lambert and Whitney Able round out the cast, »
