Thanks to the continued dominance of the home video market and digitization of cable TV, horror’s identity in the ’90s was doomed to be tricky to nail down, thanks to the vast sea of options beyond theatrical releases. For every Candyman or Scream released in theaters, there are dozens more of straight-to-video or made-for-cable horror movies.
This week, we’re diving a little deeper into the ’90s catalog, spotlighting underseen ’90s horror movies that flew under the radar. These streaming picks run the gamut in style and tone, from esoteric extreme French horror to gonzo Hong Kong cinema and beyond.

Period of Adjustment: Janiak’s Eerie Relationship Chiller a Provocative Debut
Weirdly unsettling, Leigh Janiak’s directorial debut, Honeymoon, is one of those rarely effective offbeat psychological thrillers, utilizing a simple premise and indie framework for maximum potential, the kind of film whose bizarre pleasure are few and far between. Those seeking the kind of material that dares to go to strange extremes should take note. Surprisingly effective given that it begins like any number of indie films concerning two people that should have gotten to know each other better before plunging into marriage, Janiak’s film moves swiftly from allegory to all-out bizarreathon.
Recently married newlyweds Paul (Harry Treadaway) and Bea (Rose Leslie) have chosen to abscond to Bea’s family cabin, a perfect, isolated setting in the off season. It seems this was a rather hurried affair, both of them still leery about being honest about little things here and there,...

This week’s installment comes from France circa 1990. This title is not excessively hard to track down, but yet is another that many horror fans may have missed or overlooked. I present to you... Baby Blood.
I must confess even I missed this title. I did not discover it until last year when I was pregnant. Though many women may, rightfully so, chose not to watch pregnancy-themed horror films while they have a bun in the oven, my sick brain was drawn to them. After viewing Rosemary’s Baby, The Devil Within, and It’s Alive, I found myself searching for something rare, something I had never seen before. Thus, I found Baby Blood. Written and directed by Alan Robak, Baby Blood focuses on a circus performer named Yanka. After being abused by her lover she flees the circus and sets out on her own. Yanka thinks she is pregnant...

Disembodied: Niccol Unable to Overcome Parasitic Source Material
For the sake of comparison, it’s safe to say that the latest adaptation of a Stephanie Meyer’s novel, The Host, makes for a better piece of cinematic artifice than any of the Twilight films. But not by much. For those in the know, sci-fi guru Andrew Niccol, whose favorite motif usually tends to be artificial reality (his directorial debut was Gattaca and he wrote The Truman Show), wrote the screenplay adaptation and directed this grueling effort, which lazily follows the same formula as Meyer’s other works but insert aliens where you’d think vampires.
It’s the not too distant future and mankind has been infiltrated by an alien race that takes over human bodies, erases memories and then uses these empty vessels to make the world a better place. However, there are pockets of human resistance, fleeing to...

UK TV station The Horror Channel - dedicated to the dark side of cinema and television - is set to have a mini festival, serving up three slices of sinful celluloid in its World SINema Season highlighting; taboo, terror and blasphemy. The season kicks off on Friday Sept 7, 22:55 with The Devil’S Backbone (2001) from Spanish Pan’s Labyrinth director Guillermo Del Torro. Beautifully shot and immensely creepy the film explores two different types of horror – the very real horror of war and the exploration of horror experienced through a child’s eyes (Carlos), one of ghost’s and the supernatural. Guillermo has stated this is his favourite work so far, and was a 16 year labour of love. It was influenced by early memories of seeing his uncle come back as a ghost and the creepy spectre that appears to Carlos was based on the pale faced ghosts in Japanese horrors like The Ring.

One day, a new leopard is delivered to the circus, but during the night, a creature bursts out of the animal and makes its way to Yanka's room where it enters her body and takes over her baby. Yanka knows she has to get away from the abuse, but once on the run, the creature begins talking to her, and demanding that she kill and drink the blood of her victims so that it can grow. After the Academy’s attempt at honoring genre during the live show, we saw a real tribute to horror by someone who is truly one of our own. Bob Murawski thanked Sam Raimi for giving him his “first cutting job” in Army of Darkness. His Best Editing award for Hurt Locker was shared by his partner Chris Innis, whom he met on the Raimi produced TV show “American Gothic.”
I gotta say, never since Peter Jackson’s (who was nominated this year for District 9) thank you to the crew of Meet the Feebles has there been such an excellent genre shout out.
On top of working with Raimi for over a decade, Murawski also runs Grindhouse Releasing, which distributes and restores cult and horror films with a focus on extreme Italian cinema. Pieces, The Beyond, Cannibal Holocaust, and I Drink Your Blood are just a few names you’ll find in Grindhouse Releasing's catalogue.

The Final Girl: A Few Thoughts on Feminism and Horror By Donato Totaro
One of the more important, if not groundbreaking, accounts/recuperations of the horror film from a feminist perspective is the 1993 Carol Clover's "Men, Women, and Chainsaws". One of the book's major points concerns the structural positioning of what she calls the Final Girl in relation to spectatorship. While most theorists label the horror film as a male-driven/male-centered genre, Clover points out that in most horror films, especially the slasher film, the audience, male and female, is structurally 'forced' to identify with the resourceful young female (the Final Girl) who survives the serial attacker and usually ends the threat (until the sequel anyway.) So while the narratively dominant killer's subjective point of view may be male within the narrative, the male viewer is still rooting for the Final Girl to overcome the killer. We can see this...

In 1990, a small movie carved itself a name in the horror-comedy genre. The plot was about motherly love and sacrifice. In a small town north of France a circus and its surroundings are caught in a whirlwind of horror and gore after the death of a newly imported leopard. Some strange parasite inside the cat burrows itself inside Yanka, the downtrodden pregnant wife of the circus-owner, and takes control or her fetus. It soon starts demanding blood, and the woman goes searching for victims for her new baby, leaving a trail of bodies behind her until the monster finally crawls out of her and disappear in the ocean.
More than a decade after Babyblood left its mark on the audience, a sequel is finally there. The trailer is a promising,...

This thing was finished quite a while ago but has been languishing for a year. Why? Well, from what I heard the film was terrible and I'm betting they did some reshoots and recuts. Here is the first trailer for the film, and here is the teaser. Sequel to the 1990 film Baby Blood, it's directed by feature length first timer Jean-Marc Vincent and it's finally going to get a release in France on August 19th.
Several years after a terrifying and traumatic experience, Yanka has to face her old demons again. She has become a mom, a wife and a police inspector. Meanwhile some mobsters have arrived in town, many ravaged bodies are found. Is there a link? But the serial killer seems to be a cannibal and the bodies have evil marks. Yanka has a strange feeling… Definitely, something has come back, something is approaching, something is looking for her…...

Here's the final poster for Jean-Marc Vincent's "Lady Blood", "Baby Blood" sequel, with a release date : August 19th in french theatre. Yanka is a mother and a chief of police. She's a fulfilled woman, in love with her husband and happy with her daughter and mother-in-law. Everything's going great until a strange occurrence disturbs her new life. With the help of her psychiatrist husband, she tries to convince herself that it's just a nightmare. But it gets worse every day... In the same time, she heads an investigation into the local mob which leads her to the discovery of horrible crimes, so much like the bloody carnage she herself committed while under a monster's influence all those years earlier......

Any week that ends with Halloween is a good week, and October 25-31, 2008, definitely lived up to its potential. But right now It's hard to keep my mind off the leftover candy in the pantry and on the latest news stories, so without further ado, let's hit the highlights:
Speculation's always fun, and the prospect of Ridley Scott directing a film about werewolves is just too cool to ignore.
As is the opportunity to see Timecrimes (review) at the local multiplex sometime in November. No word on exactly when and where yet, but while we wait on the details, check out Timecrimes' very compelling trailer. If you're even half the time travel aficionado I am, you'll be anxious to see more.
Another project that has horror fans clamoring for all the info we can get is Sam Raimi's latest. Thanks to MTV we got our first look at some...

I’ve been following this one for a long time. The sequel to Alain Robak’s Baby Blood has been announced a few months ago and it looks like it’s finally coming around. The good people at Alterego Films just sent us a teaser you can find below the break in the Twitch Player. By the way, is it me or the posters on the official site really awesome ?

This being called the first teaser for the film and it's not, we actually reported on the promo reel back in June, but now the website is live with posters and the teaser has some new footage. This is a sequel to the 1990 film Baby Blood, and it's taken a while to come around, because apparently (or so a little birdy told me) they were having some problems.

Set to premiere at next month’s American Film Market and represented for worldwide distribution by DC Medias, Lady is the sequel to Alain Robak’s Baby Blood (a.k.a. The Evil Within), following the further adventures of Yanka (returning Emmanuelle Escourrou), who once harbored an unborn child that compelled her to kill. Now happily married to a psychiatrist and working as a chief of police, she finds her life becoming a nightmare again when she investigates crimes that bear a gruesome resemblance to those she committed while under the evil baby’s influence.
