When Brandon Boyd thinks back on the spring of 2001, he’s amazed he wasn’t more stressed out. His band, Incubus, had just broken through with 1999’s Make Yourself, and their hit “Drive” was climbing the charts. “In retrospect, we probably should have felt more pressure to make a great follow-up record because we have this hit single right now,” Boyd, 47, tells Rolling Stone. “That didn’t even enter our minds. We were just like, ‘This is crazy! A lot of people are listening to our songs right now. Let’s make another one!

British director and screenwriter who enjoyed huge success with his 1987 hit film Wish You Were Here
Grittiness and compassion were the twin hallmarks of the writer and director David Leland, who has died aged 82. He scripted a clutch of uncompromising films that launched the screen careers of Cathy Tyson, Emily Lloyd and Tim Roth. Leland’s writing was distinctly British in flavour but without the parochial sensibility that might have limited its appeal.
His early draft of Mona Lisa (1986), an underworld thriller about the relationship between a sex worker (Tyson) and her driver (Bob Hoskins), was tougher and nastier than the finished film. Leland shared the screenplay credit with its Irish director, Neil Jordan.

From Wish You Were Here to Mona Lisa and The Big Man, he was determined to shine a light on those marginalised in society albeit using his quirky sense of humour
David Leland was a master of understatement with a social conscience and wildly wicked sense of humour, arising like his friends the Pythons from our everyday humdrum British universe in the 60s and 70s.
More than 40 years ago I saw the astonishing Made in Britain. The film that made Tim Roth – who played a violent skinhead – a star, was written by Leland for the producer and director Alan Clarke. It was a a biting attack on rightwing Thatcherite policies and it is just as relevant to today’s brutal system.

Although there hasn’t been any official word put out, British psychedelic rock band ‘Pink Floyd’ have been shopping their recorded-music catalogue and other assets for several months, seeking as much as 500 million, according to the Financial Times, with both major music companies and investment firms as the top bidders.
But sources say that an explosive new interview with founding member, main songwriter and stakeholder Roger Waters – in which he makes extensive remarks about Israel, Ukraine, Russia, the U.S. and other political matters that one could politely characterise as controversial – is giving at least one potential buyer cold feet and seems likely to lead others to rethink their positions, reports Variety.
For years, Waters has sounded off about politics in the press and at his concerts, most controversially Israel’s policies. But the new interview in Rolling Stone raises (or lowers) the bar considerably.

Pink Floyd have reunited for a one-off charity single to raise money for Ukrainians affected by Russia’s invasion. “Hey, Hey, Rise Up” features vocals by Andriy Khlyvnyuk of the Ukrainian band, Boombox, who recorded himself in full military gear singing the folk song, “The Red Viburnum in the Meadow,” to the empty streets in Kyiv’s Sofiyskaya Square.
David Gilmour was so moved by the performance that he called Nick Mason, bassist Guy Pratt, and keyboardist Nitin Sawhney and organized a recording session last Wednesday that featured video of Khlyvnyuk projected on the wall.

“Forget money, I’m focused on dignity and loyalty.” Those were the disturbing words spoken the other day by my favorite agent who, alas, is facing the prospect of going out of business.
Fortunately, the agent in question is French and fictional; she works for Ask and is portrayed in Call My Agent!, the hit show that began its fourth and final season on Netflix this week. Talent agents and their entourages have pitched and connived their way on TV before, but the French show has found a binge following, even among Hollywood’s besieged tenpercenters, as Variety used to call them.
Faced with strikes and streamers, the agenting community has had to make some bold moves, redefining corporate goals and expanding job descriptions. Agents are now even repping politicians and their causes as well as actors.

The more emotion-driven a TV series or movie, the more important the soundtrack. And boy is Normal People, the Hulu adaptation of Sally Rooney’s wildly popular novel of the same name, driven by the emotion of its characters and world.
Normal People follows Marianne and Connell’s complicated relationship as they move from being teenagers at a small town in western Ireland into young adulthood at Dublin’s Trinity College, and showrunner Ed Guiney, directors Lenny Abrahamson and Hettie Macdonald, music supervisors Juliet Martin and Maggie Phillips, and editor Nathan Nugent have done an impressive job crafting the music landscape for this world.
“We were trying all sorts of tracks ourselves,” said Abrahamson, who mentioned Martin, Phillips, Nugent, and himself as the chief collaborators in the process. “So, as well as the work that Stephen Rennicks, the composer, was doing, it was just, again, a very organic kind of collaboration.

Yes, but it was a long time ago when it won the Golden Bear at the Berlin Film Festival, that I was so enamoured Hungarian director Ildikó Enyedi’s Of Body and Soul (as I was with her previous film, the 1989 Cannes Film Festival Camera d’or winner, My Twentieth Century, which was seen by about a .02% of the population). From anime to pitch-black thrillers, here's our pick of the underappreciated movies of 1987...
Sometimes, the challenge with these lists isn't just what to put in, but what to leave out. We loved Princess Bride, but with a decent showing at the box office and a huge cult following, isn't it a bit too popular to be described as underappreciated? Likewise Joe Dante's Innerspace, a fabulously geeky, comic reworking of the 60s sci-fi flick, Fantastic Voyage.
What we've gone for instead is a mix of genre fare, dramas and animated films that may have garnered a cult following since, but didn't do well either critically or financially at the time of release. Some of the movies on our list just about made their money back, but none made anything close to the sort of returns enjoyed by the likes of 1987's biggest films - Three Men And A Baby, Fatal Attraction...

Each year when my Bfca ballot arrives I stop in my tracks, stumped, when I get to "Young Performer". Categories that aren't Oscar correlative are often trickier.
Oh dear. How uneasy I feel..."
That's not because you're free of predicting (anyone trying to predict with their own ballot really ought to find a new profession -- criticism: ur not doing it right) but because it's a subsection of acting you probably haven't been discussing at all. You suddenly remember that you need to have been considering it with as much seriousness as you have made your other selections.
I imagine that Ellar Coltrane, the now 20 year old star of Boyhood, will be tough to beat since this category is for the 21 and under set. But even if the category were adjusted downward to 17 and younger (which we strongly support as a rule change -because it's always weird when an adult...

Some of the most memorable posters of recent years have emanated from the imaginations of fans, and this Drew Struzan-y effort for upcoming sci-fi adventure Robot Overlords is another such. Crafted by Scotsman Brian Taylor - Aka Candykiller - it captures the "'80s Amblin" spirit director Jon Wright is promising for his new sci-fi adventure and showcases his three stars, Gillian Anderson, Ben Kingsley and Aussie newcomer Callan McAuliffe. Click below for a closer look. Unlike those Amblin classics - The Goonies, especially - its gang of intrepid kids don't hail from Middle America. "It's set in a small seaside town,” Wright tells Empire, “where you’d have seen Emily Lloyd in Wish You Were Here once upon a time – not where you’d expect to see two-storey robots.”Those draconian robots, the clanking, by-now slightly rusting menace, have ceaselessly patrolled a technology-bereft Earth for three long years,...

Shane Meadows is arguably Britain’s finest filmmaker, with the likes of Dead Man’s Shoes, This is England and A Room For Romeo Brass standing out from his mighty back catalogue. It was therefore a great privilege for us to sit down with the director (over a bottle of champagne) at the Virgin Media Shorts awards, last night, where Meadows was a judge.
Having made a handful of short films himself, before moving into feature length films – and now TV with the immense This is England spin-off drama, Meadows discusses his love for the short film, why it’s important to give it exposure, while also telling us about the winning short ‘Touch’ by Nimer Rashed. He also speaks to us about This is England ’90 and whether it not this may be the final instalment of the hugely popular series.

Though he hasn't directed a feature since 2004's "Garden State," Zach Braff has been the talk of the town in recent weeks. With over 35,000 backers and nearly $2.5 million in funds with two weeks to go, his Kickstarter campaign for a new film fell under siege for perpetuating the notion that millionaires are just using the crowdsourcing platform to fund their vanity projects (our Toh! story is here). Recently, Braff sat down with the La Times to respond to critics of the campaign for "Wish You Were Here," his sophomore effort that more or less sounds like "Garden State" redux. Excerpts from the interview below. Zb: There's been some deliciously yummy vitriol. I guess I was a little naive about this coming in. I didn't think that people would care that much about a little movie, which I was wrong about. But I can’t say I totally get it. It's...

Harmony Korine's Spring Breakers: This year's top per-theater average by far Written and directed by Harmony Korine, and starring James Franco, Vanessa Hudgens, Selena Gomez, Ashley Benson, and Rachel Korine, Spring Breakers pulled in an estimated $270,000 at three locations (one in Los Angeles, two in New York City) this weekend (March 15-17) as per studio estimates found on the web site Box Office Mojo. The (very) low-budget crime comedy-drama averaged a hihgly impressive $90,000 per site. That's this year's best per-theater average so far by a wide margin. (Pictured above: James Franco and director Korine. What you see on Franco's arm is the map of Florida, in case you hadn't noticed.) Spring Breakers vs. The King's Speech, Lincoln, Zero Dark Thirty For comparison's sake, in late '10, the Tom Hooper / Colin Firth drama The King's Speech averaged $88,863 per theater on its first weekend in release; late last year, the...

"Wish You Were Here" Ha, so good! Spring break forever... If I did include festival films, I would honestly consider Harmony Korine's Spring Breakers for my Top 10 of 2012 after seeing it at Tiff last year. It's insane, but there's nothing like it, wild and entertaining. James Franco steals the show, of course, but he's only one part. Spring Breakers also stars, and is about, four teenage girls who take a trip down to Spring Break for the time of their lives. Vulture has the first teaser poster, with just Vanessa Hudgens in a mask and bikini with a gun, as distributor A24 has just scheduled this for release on March 22nd. Ya, take a look. Here's the first Spring Breakers poster, which is a hilariously perfect tease for this soon-to-be-cult-classic. In Spring Breakers, Brit (Ashley Benson), Candy (Vanessa Hudgens), Cotty (Rachel Korine) & Faith (Selena Gomez) have been best friends...

Director Andrew Traucki has become the latest high-profile Australian filmmaker to turn to crowdfunding in an effort to complete his feature.
Traucki previously helmed crocodile thriller Black Water (with David Nerlich) in 2007, which he followed with shark thriller The Reef in 2010. His latest film, The Jungle, follows big cat specialist, Larry Black, who ventures into the remote Indonesian jungle with filmmaker brother, Ben, to investigate reported sightings of the endangered Javan leopard.
It was filmed in Byron Bay and Indonesia. Traucki, who wrote and directed the film, is attempting to raise at least $16,500 through the Indiegogo website by December 1, which will pay for post-production costs.
.The great thing about crowdfunding, apart from helping raise a film.s budget, is the dialogue that occurs between fans and yourself . the maker of the work," he said in a statement. "It.s wonderful to actually connect with your audience and supporters in this way.

In the mood for a zombie-esque story with a unique twist? Saddle up for a new Crossed series. According to announcements at New York Comic Con, Garth Ennis’s crazies are coming soon to a computer near you. No, not only in the form of a web comic (Simon Spurrier and Javier Barreno have been bringing us “Wish You Were Here” for nearly a year now), but in actual live action episodes–to be directed by creator Garth Ennis himself.
If you’re not yet familiar with the terror that is the Crossed comic book series, let’s just say that it has a lot in common with Night Of The Living Dead, except instead of being dead, the infected hordes are crazed psychopaths wielding weapons and various body parts. It’s pretty intense stuff, and not for anyone easily disturbed by violence. How will it play out with real actors and makeup effects?...
