On Friday nights, IndieWire After Dark takes a feature-length beat to honor fringe cinema in the streaming age.
First, the spoiler-free pitch for one editor’s midnight movie pick — something weird and wonderful from any age of film that deserves our memorializing.
Then, the spoiler-filled aftermath as experienced by the unwitting editor attacked by this week’s recommendation.
The Pitch: Fool Me Once, Shame on You. Fool Me Twice, I’ll Spend a Decade Plotting to Kill You and Everyone You Love
Few holidays had their reputations altered more severely by the advent of the internet than April Fool’s Day. What was once a niche holiday devoted to optional pranks on your friends devolved into a 24-hour salute to disinformation in which everyone begrudgingly agrees not to believe anything they read for a day while brands amuse themselves with unfunny online gags.

The Prank. Those delightful, seemingly harmless little tricks we play on others for a laugh. But tread carefully, for the line between playful jest and horrific disaster is perilously thin. These seven horror movies with pranks gone wrong take the concept of the lighthearted prank and twist it into something lethal. We’re talking about more than just whoopee cushions and fake spiders; these are pranks with consequences so severe they’re measured in screams, not giggles.
From high school gags that end in gorefests to sinister plots with deadly outcomes, each prank horror movie in this list shows how quickly the fun can turn fatal. So, prepare yourself for a rollercoaster of deceit and dread, where the next laugh might be your last, and the punchline is always death.

Robert Englund steps into the director’s chair with ‘976-Evil,’ a dark dive into Satanism and demonology where a bullied outcast uses an occult hotline to bite back.
“Out of the darkness and into light, comes your horrorscope on this dark and stormy night.”
Robert Englund is a name who needs no introduction in the horror community. He’s played Freddy Krueger in eight A Nightmare on Elm Street movies and has brought life to one of the horror genre’s greatest icons. Englund’s incomparable work as Krueger would be enough to forever make him a celebrity, but he’s had a rich horror career that’s included multiple roles in Tobe Hooper films and, more recently, his standout performance as Victor Creel in the streaming phenomenon, Stranger Things. Englund will always be Freddy Krueger, but it’s curious to consider how his career would have been different if...

“Girls5Eva” star Busy Philipps is opening up about a disheartening experience she had when she pursued directing a TV series.
Philipps, who rose to fame on “Dawson’s Creek,” directed one episode of TBS’ “Cougar Town,” which she also starred in opposite Courteney Cox. An unnamed friend then recommended Philipps to direct a “major studio” series.
However, the “Freaks and Geeks” alum recalled a TV executive from a “major network” telling her that she would never direct the tentpole show.
“I was just told like, ‘No, it’s just not going to happen. The studio won’t approve it, the network won’t approve it. It’s not going to happen,'” Philipps told Insider. “Meanwhile, obviously any dude who’s spent 10 minutes on a television show manages to parlay their career into directing.”

Happy Saturday, dear readers! I hope that you’ve been enjoying all of our Indie Horror Month coverage so far, and that you’ll continue to join in on the celebration right here on Daily Dead for the rest of April as well. Yesterday, I paid tribute to the wave of independent horror that was released throughout the 1980s (you can read that piece Here) so I thought it only made sense to focus on a most excellent streaming resource where you can find a ton of great indie genre movies from that decade and watch them for free - Tubi TV.
While Tubi’s collection of ‘80s horror is vast, I went ahead and picked out 25 great genre classics that are currently available on their platform to stream, but please know that by no means is this everything from the 1980s that Tubi has to offer, so be sure...

Busy Philipps Opens Up About James Franco and Seth Rogen Creative Split After Misconduct Allegations
Seth Rogen made headlines in May when he confirmed he has no plans to work with James Franco again following myriad allegations of sexual misconduct against his “Freaks and Geeks” co-star and frequent collaborator. Busy Philipps, on the press circuit now for her Peacock series “Girls5eva” and also a co-star on the beloved “Freaks and Geeks,” recently addressed the split between Franco and Rogen on The Daily Beast’s “The Last Laugh” podcast.
“I have to say, I mean, it’s interesting. They were super close and they had a very tight relationship. And so I don’t have any information. I mean, I’m going to say something now, whatever — Seth is married to a very fucking smart woman,” Philipps said.
In her memoir “This Will Only Hurt a Little” published in 2018, Philipps recounted an incident on the set of “Freaks and Geeks” where she said Franco physically assaulted her.

Busy Philipps shared her thoughts on Seth Rogen’s distancing from James Franco while reflecting on some of the less savory parts of her early years working in Hollywood during a recent appearance on The Daily Beast‘s The Last Laugh podcast.
While speaking about her current series, Peacock’s Girls5Eva, Philipps was prompted to reflect on some of her early-career experiences — specifically, Freaks and Geeks.

Arrow Video is excited to announce the July slate of titles on their subscription-based Arrow Video Channel, including acclaimed undead comedy Zombie for Sale and Gamera: The Complete Collection, all twelve films starring mankind’s greatest defender: a fire-breathing mutant turtle.

For the first time ever, fans can trace the decades-long evolution of Gamera, from the “friend of all children” in his more light-hearted earlier films, to the Guardian of the Universe in the groundbreaking 1990s reboot series, often hailed as three of the best kaiju films ever made.

Welcome to Valentine Bluffs, the little town with a big heart. Around those parts, though, that big heart might end up being stuffed inside a heart-shaped candy box by Harry Warden before February 14th is over and done with, but otherwise, it’s a great place to live.
As a kid, I only ever rented George Mihalka’s My Bloody Valentine once (for some dumb reason), and it was only until the remake was coming out in 2009 that I decided to rent it again, and was totally blown away, because 10-year-old Heather sure as hell didn’t appreciate just how great the original Mbv was and still is after all this time. One of those rare singular slashers that never made it into franchise territory, My Bloody Valentine is a pretty fantastic whodunit about a killer dressed up like a miner, similar to the M.O. of Harry Warden, a...

Bullying never yields positive results, for the bullied nor the bully. The former holds that trauma and anguish for the rest of their lives, and the latter either trudges forward with that toxic mentality or ends up harboring tremendous guilt themselves. Horror films have taught us this morality lesson for many years, from “Carrie” to “Prom Night,” from “Terror Train” to “Slaughter High,” all the way to the recent first chapter of “It.” Each and every one of these films manages to interweave that anti-bullying message into something entertaining and/or poignant, with most of them having a hint of irony that injects the point-of-view in a way that’s lasting and effective.

Hello once again, readers! I hope everyone’s lead-up to Halloween has been going well over the last few weeks. For me, so many of the horror films that I tend to revisit throughout the month to get me ready for October 31st hail from the greatest decade in horror: the 1980s. Between the mind-blowing special effects, the wildly inventive stories from some of the greatest genre filmmakers, and the memorable performances, although there have been a lot of strong eras of horror, the ’80s is undoubtedly the most unforgettable as a whole.
So, for today’s From Streams to Screams, I thought it would be fun to put together a collection of films that are currently streaming on various platforms that helped shape the landscape of modern genre cinema. Regardless of how much time passes, we’ve yet to see a decade as wonderfully weird as the 1980s, and...

Oh, ’80s slashers. You come in so many shapes and varieties that I never get tired of you. Take Slaughter High, for example, a slasher movie that was released in 1986 but looks like it was made in 1981. It has three directors. It was shot in the UK by English filmmakers, but passes itself off as an American film taking place in an American high school. The high schoolers all appear to be in their early 30s. It’s entirely placed on April Fool’s Day but couldn’t be called April Fool’s Day (its original title) because there was already a movie coming out called April Fool’s Day. Nothing about Slaughter High makes complete sense, but it’s in this way that the movie distinguishes itself.

With the upcoming worldwide release of the modern creature feature comedy Cute Little Buggers I was lucky enough to spend some time with the film’s director Tony Jopia to talk about his influences, bringing the bunnies to life and having fun on set.
How did first get in to filmmaking?
When I was 9 years old I was asked what I wanted to do at school. I remember seeing Airport 1975 (1974) and then not long after another film called the The Poseidon Adventure (1972). They both kind of set a firm seed in my mind that making moves is what I wanted to do. My father used to wake me up at midnight to watch all the creature feature movies that used to appear late at night. I had school the next day yet he would still wake me up at midnight and say, “Come and watch this”. It was the...

There is no definitive answer as to what the first slasher movie really is. Many point to Michael Powell's Peeping Tom or even Psycho as the film that launched the genre. Others suggest it's Mario Bava’s Bay of Blood (aka Twitch of the Death Nerve) that invented the slasher tropes. Some still say it's John Carpenter's original Halloween, a movie that, even if it is not the first slasher movie ever made, can still be called the most influential. It (and Bava’s Bay of Blood) is the movie that producer Sean Cunningham was ripping off when he made the original Friday the 13th, the copycat that launched a thousand more copycats. There has been a push in the last 10–15 years, though, to recognize Bob Clark's 1974 film Black Christmas (aka Silent Night, Evil Night) as the first “real” slasher, as a clear line can be drawn...

The horror genre had quite the year in 1986. Jason Voorhees climbed out of his coffin, scientist Seth Brundle tinkered with teleportation, two Tobe Hooper films were released in theaters, and Stephen King's directorial debut burned rubber on the big screen. In our new, free issue of Deadly Magazine, we revisit some of the genre's most memorable movies from that magical mid-’80s year with the people that helped make them. Welcome to the 30-year reunion for the Class of 1986.
Within the pages of this Deadly Magazine issue, you'll find retrospectives and interviews that shine spotlights on some of the most celebrated, and in some cases, underrated, films from 1986.
Scott Weinberg's interview with Barbara Crampton offers an intriguing look at the making of Stuart Gordon's other H.P. Lovecraft adaptation, From Beyond. Scott Drebit enrolls at Slaughter High to give his grade on the school-set slasher. Joseph Maddrey sits...

“It’s exactly what you think it is!”
“You don’t have to go to Texas for a Chainsaw Massacre!”
Indeed. It’s not often that a film will tell you exactly their intention, their mission statement, right up front. With a film like Pieces (1982), it’s a badge of honor, worn proudly, a tattered and bloodied flag waving proudly from its mast on the seas of horror. Not only is Pieces exactly what we think it is, it’s so much more – one of the most cheerfully odd, sleazy slashers to come out of the VHS era. Pull out your slickers folks, things are about to get messy.
Filmed in Spain (subbing for Boston, Mass.), Pieces was released there in August of ’82, with a North American run distributed by Film Ventures International in September of ’83. Surprisingly, it did quite well, bringing in over 2 million Us after playing only 104 theatres.

Just when you think the found footage horror film has gasped its last breath, the sub-genre finds a way to revive itself – like how Jason Voorhees or Michael Myers somehow always find a way to return. The Paranormal Activity series tapped into the public’s desire for handheld “real” scares back in 2009 when the first film became a huge success. Five sequels followed since then with a long-delayed sixth one planned for release this Halloween. Many of the other found footage horror films during this period consisted of the same two elements that Oren Peli included in the hit film: human possession and otherworldly spirits. The Last Exorcism, The Devil Inside, and As Above/So Below are just some of the films that I’m referring to.
It’s interesting to see the found footage horror genre come back like one of these 1980’s screen killers considering The Gallows seems...

“Don’t go into the graveyard”
An ominous warning from the opening scene of Crying Wolf
Crying Wolf is the latest Horror-Comedy from UK director Tony Jopia (Deadtime, 2012). The story is told from the perspective of a character known only as “Private Detective” (played by Gary Martin who is best known in film for his work getting murdered by a tractor in 1986’s Slaughter High). The first thing that gets me is that Martin, a long-time voice over actor who you can hear in films like Neverending Story, Corpse Bride and Fern Gully (to say nothing of his collaborations with rock icons, Queen), appears to have dubbed his own dialog in Crying Wolf in an overly dramatic coffee commercial way. Something I immediately chalked up to an intentional touch of comedic irony. Because, why not. After Martin nearly comes to blows with a shopkeeper over his desire to purchase a book titled Crying Wolf,...

In my moviegoing and movieloving life which has been going on basically since birth Ive discovered two things over the years which I now pride myself upon. Despite the loads of crap Ive encountered over four decades I have rarely (I can count on one hand the number of times) shut off a film because it was absolutely terrible. And the other thing to which I am adept when watching films I am 99 of the time able to find something good valuable effective and worthwhile. Why even one of my all time faves the classic crapfest Slaughter High despite all of the awful things contained in that picture there are a few things that actually work. It has one of the best horror chase scenes its got a fantastic Harry Manfredini...

However, we think all titles are worth your time whether to give you chills inside your home or to make you drink more eggnog until you puke laughing.

This week marks my triumphant return to the Dead Air Podcast. I have been absent lately, mostly due to scheduling issues, but this was one episode that I wasn’t going to miss. We’ve never really done a retrospective like this for. We usually pick a certain filmmaker, or certain series of films, and cover all of the films pertaining to that. This time, we decided to cover all of the films on this particular Lionsgate 8 horror movie budget packs. The movie combinations are being chosen randomly by Mr. Jimmy Terror, and this week might be the best combination possible. First up, we cover a double feature of Chopping Mall, a personal favorite Wynorski movie of mine, and Slaughter High.

Here we go again. Another found footage movie. This time the premise steals heavily from the grand-daddy of found footage movies, Cannibal Holocaust, in so much that the film purportedly consists of ‘found’ material from the screen writer’s video diary which is viewed after the events… Yeah right.
Apparently based on a true story, You Are Not Alone (aka House Swap) sees a young California screenwriter and his composer girlfriend exchange their Echo Park home for a sprawling Tudor mansion near Glastonbury, England, in the hope of finding creative inspiration. Thinking they have the best of the bargain, they soon learn that the house comes with a stalker who seems able to enter through locked doors. Driven beyond endurance by the continual harassment, the screenwriter sets a trap to exact his revenge.

The fantastic thing about the VHS years is that the poster art was frequently hand drawn and frequently had very little or nothing to do with the actual film. If you picked a film based solely on the box cover, you had a pretty good chance of being disappointed or at least surprised. Distributors seemed to see a snazzy box cover as a good way to get some mileage out of a subpar film. That still goes on today, but it seems to happen less frequently and the artwork just isn’t the same. In spite of the trickery that duped more than a couple of horror fans in the late ‘70s through the early ‘90s, there are some terrific and legitimate films that have terribly misleading – albeit awesome – cover art. For that reason, we present to you ten more examples of awesomely misleading film artwork.

Slaughter High: “Stop me if you’ve head this one before; a dorky high school kid gets ridiculed and pranked on by the cool kids. Sequels are often maligned and rarely live up to the original film on which they are based. Many sequels are thrown together, poorly written, low budget attempts to capitalize on the success of the original. However, that’s not always the case. In rare cases, sequels have even gone on to be better than their predecessor. Below, you can take a look at some of the horror films that we would like to have seen a sequel made for.
