Only this time, because the slasher subgenre is vast and endless with no shortage of hidden gems, we’re highlighting five underseen slashers you may not have watched yet.

Despite the decline in theatrical horror releases during the 1990s, the direct-to-video side of the genre was still thriving. So much so that something like Jeff Burr’s Night of the Scarecrow understandably slipped through the cracks after its unnoticed home-video premiere in ‘96. Even aficionados of this regularly dismissed decade of horror might not be aware of the movie’s existence. Nevertheless, longtime fans still consider this to be one of the more notable offerings of scarecrow horror.
It’s not hard to figure out why Night of the Scarecrow got so lost in the shuffle of ‘90s Dtv horror. Jeff Burr claimed only around 12,000 units were shipped back in the bygone days of video shops. Yet, if you came across this movie’s alluring box art in the horror aisle, you couldn’t be blamed for wanting to take a closer look. The alternative artwork — the titular, sickle-wielding villain...

Scare Flair notes, “Dark Night of the Scarecrow is a 1981 horror film directed by Frank De Felitta and starring Larry Drake, Charles Durning, and Lane Smith. The film was originally meant to be an independent feature but was purchased by CBS – turning it into a made for television film. The film was released on Saturday October 24, 1981 – as part of their Halloween line-up – and was very well received by critics and audiences. Dark Night of the Scarecrow is credited to have started the horror subgenre of the killer scarecrow.

Rubén Galindo Jr.’s most prominent horror feature is the American-influenced Don’t Panic (available on Shudder), but the Halloween-centric Cemetery of Terror offers the most fun. A trio of college kids decides to impress their ladies by stealing a body from a morgue for a Halloween prank and party in an abandoned house. It happens to be the body of a serial killer, and reading an incantation from a book revives it.

Happy Friday, dear readers! One of our annual traditions here at Daily Dead is that, once a year, we take a few weeks to celebrate a notable time period in the horror genre. And since 2021 marks the 40th anniversary of all the great classics that were released during 1981, we thought it only made sense to pay tribute to the films of that year with our Class of 1981 series.
Starting on Monday, August 16th, we will be kicking off our two-week celebration of the killer horror and memorable sci-fi movies that were released throughout 1981. And if you feel like celebrating right alongside us, I’ve gone ahead and put together this handy list of where you can stream an assortment of ‘81 classics on a variety of platforms (both subscription-based and free).
And remember, be sure to check back here every day on Daily Dead for all kinds of 1981-related fun, as...

Welcome back for another installment of “From Streams to Screams,” everyone! It’s Monday, which is always the roughest day of the week to get through, so perhaps there are a few films on this list that might help ease that pain a bit. For today’s selection of horror movies that are currently streaming on a variety of platforms—Shudder, Hulu, Netflix, Amazon Prime, Vudu and Tubi TV—we’re taking a trip back in time to the 1970s and 1980s, which were arguably two of the greatest decades in genre storytelling.
And before anyone asks, “Where’s this movie? Where’s this other movie?,” I’ve been careful to not repeat listings in all of the different editions of “From Streams to Screams,” so this is more of a rundown of all the great ’70s and ’80s horror that I haven’t been able to mention over the...

Separated for 20 years after the brutal murder of their parents, June and Carl are reuniting at the family barn where the horror took place to commemorate the anniversary of their parents’ death. Accompanied by her therapist and best friend, June is about to uncover the truth behind the locals’ belief in an ancient curse. A curse that sees a scarecrow takes human form every 20 years to wreak havoc on unsuspecting residents…
Proprtion Production are back again! Yes, after seemingly cashing in on the Pet Sematary hype with the unrelated Pet Graveyard, the company tap the killer scarecrow mythos, a genre trope that has been severly under utilised (in my opinion) in recent years, with Curse of the Scarecrow.

The high school bully has long been a staple in cinema, genre related or not; every David needs a Goliath, and every school is loaded with both. When producers realized that teens were showing up to drive-ins (whether to watch the movie or not), a lot of films began to cater to the Clearasil crowd, especially horror. I Was A Teenage this and I Was A Nuclear that flooded the market - for a time, that is. The next big wave happened in the ‘70s with the watershed Carrie (1976) getting every studio to open their notebooks (and check books too), with naturally very mixed results. Leading up to Cassie White and her hormonal blowout was Horror High (1973), a fun, gritty, and goofy update of the Teenage movies of the ‘50s filtered through Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde.

Join me as we take a trip down memory lane, before cell phones and instant notifications and Dm’s and everything else that makes me sound like an informational paranoid and crotchety old man. Let’s take a look at an urban legend stretched out to feature length with Fred Walton’s When a Stranger Calls (1979), a mesmerizing-then-decent-then-gripping suspense thriller.
Released by Columbia Pictures stateside in late October, When a Stranger Calls was a big hit with audiences, returning over $21 million against a $1.5 million budget. Critics were quicker to hang up, however; although nearly all praised the opening 20 minute set up, filled as it is with a promise impossible to match. That’s okay though, because I still think When a Stranger Calls is ultimately worth staying on the line for.

Tagline: "Death is Watching." A few details are emerging from the cornfields for Curse of the Scarecrow. In the vein of Dark Night of the Scarecrow (1981), Husk (2011), Sheldon Wilson's Scarecrow (2013) - Curse of the Scarecrow takes place after a tragedy. June and Carl have seen their parents killed, at an early age. Determined to find their killers, June returns to her family home, only to find the grounds haunted by a murderous scarecrow. This title, from director Louisa Warren, stars: Kate Lister and Cassandra French. Several stills and an early concept poster are hosted here. There are two synopses for the film. The shorter one mentions that June and Carl return to a family farm, twenty years after their parent's death. Not long after, Carl mysteriously commits suicide. In the longer synopsis, the scarecrow is waging a cornstalk filled war, on an entire town. The crows fly in this film!

I normally equate seaside towns with peace and tranquility, a place for rest, relaxation, and perhaps writing the Great Canadian Novel (it’s going to be a thinly veiled takedown of beloved children’s TV host Mr. Dressup, for the record). Clark’s Harbor however, the setting of Cry for the Strangers (1982), is a place where my laptop and I shall never set foot; there’s just too much damn tribalistic murder.
Originally broadcast by CBS on February 11th, Cry for the Strangers would have to contend with Barney Miller, Taxi, and 20/20 on ABC and Different Strokes, Gimme a Break! and Hill Street Blues on NBC, and it’s safe to say most eyes were peeping these network staples. But for those with a salty taste for the macabre, the Eye was the network to be. (For this occasion anyway; they can’t all be ABC Movie of the Week’s.

TV horror lives and dies by the pen. From the ‘50s to the ‘90s, network TV shows and movies simply couldn’t carry the weight of special effects, and the content restrictions placed on TV (before the advent of cable, I’m talking the Big Three – ABC, CBS, NBC) back in the day did not allow for the most part a visceral experience. (Oh how times have changed.) So often the tale itself would have to suffice, and if it was gripping enough, blood speckled walls and torn limbs weren’t even necessary. Case in point: The Strange Possession of Mrs. Oliver (1977), an NBC Monday Night at the Movies written by none other than Richard Matheson, starring Karen Black.
Premiering Monday, February 28th, 1977, Strange’s beat down would come at the hands of ABC’s Monday Night Movie (I just love the creative monikers), which regularly trounced any and all comers in that time slot.

TV is usually the first portal for horror when you’re a kid. At least it was for me; pre internet horror was found either: a) at the movies, b) in comic books, or c) the idiot box. And before we were allowed to see big screen horror, TV scratched that itch. Saturday mornings had Scooby Doo, The Hilarious House of Frightenstein, and various other shows, animated or not, to quench our growing curiosity for the weird, creepy, and unusual. But if we were lucky enough to be able to watch after 9 pm, things got much more interesting.
Terrifying stories of miniature monsters, witchcraft, Satanism, and creepy cults awaited our bloodshot eyes. TV was absolutely inundated with horror, channels dripping with malicious behavior in the form of weekly shows or made for TV movies. Of course, the networks (the big – and only – three: ABC, NBC, and CBS) back then had...

Vengeance is mine, sayeth the Lord – and many horror films to boot. Payback has always been a constant theme, whether it’s a sinister spirit avenging murder, or a maniacal parent repaying camp counselors for not watching her handicapped child. The meteoric rise in popularity of video games and personal computers at the turn of the 80’s, married with ancient evil, brought a modern edge to this shopworn trope. A sympathetic tale of comeuppance, Evilspeak (1981) serves up its revenge under the computer screen’s warm glow.
Released by Moreno Films, first in Japan in August of ’81 and February of ’82 in North America, Evilspeak nearly made back its 1,000,000 Us budget opening weekend stateside. A few good reviews trickled in, comparing it favorably to the high school horrorfest Carrie (1976). Regardless of comparisons, it stands as a unique antique of a burgeoning time in technology and a potent payback tale.

At the top of a definite genre shortlist is William Wesley’s 1988 title Scarecrows, a little horror flick about the eponymous objects used to frighten birds away from crops. Unfortunately, to use a cheap analogy, their use as frightful entities on film is parallel to their safeguarding of crops, effective only to the cognitive capabilities of smaller creatures. While Wesley maintains an effective command of ambience throughout this nocturnal jaunt through the vegetation, a bounty of budgetary restraints, strained performances and belabored writing seemingly brought on by a limited concept mark the film as fodder for the Mystery Science Theater 3000 experience.

Lyons (Dark Night of the Scarecrow), Nicole Cummins (Logan), Kevin Norman (Melissa & Joey), Kyle T. Heffner (Seinfeld), Julia Lehman (Cheerleader Massacre 2), Tom Nagel (Hillside Cannibals), Jenny Lin (Piranhaconda), Robert Amstler (Alien Showdown), and Morgan Lester (John Carter).
Written and produced by Jeff Miller and Jason Ancona (co-writers and producers of Axe Giant), The Burning Dead pits a horde of lava-filled zombies against a sheriff charged with the plight to rescue an estranged family from a volcano eruption. Trejo plays Night Wolf, a Native American warrior who knows way too much about the curse that unearthed the coffin dodgers.

I’ll admit I have a soft spot for the scarecrow film. Ever since I was terrified by a TV screening of Dark Night of the Scarecrow back in the 80s, I’ve seen just about every scarecrow-related film going – even those that should probably have never seen the light of day! So of course I Had to see Scarecrow. Even moreso given that it’s (yet another) Canadian genre film and it stars Robin Dunne, an actor whose career I’ve followed ever since I saw him in Cruel Intentions 2 (yes, I liked that film – even more than the original).
The film sees school teacher Aaron Harris (Dunne) doling out punishment to six students serving detention,...

Stuffed with straw, dressed in rags and left to twist in the breeze, the typical mild-mannered scarecrow may not be built to frighten anything larger than your average feathered pest... but that hasn't stopped these eerie effigies from coming to life in our nightmares. For generations, this image of the harvest has been associated with the darker, colder days to come, so it wasn't long before spooky tales were being spun about evil scarecrows wandering the fields, intent on reaping something more substantial than corn. Cinematic scarecrows have come a long way since the lovable Wizard of Oz character, but some of them might still be looking for a brain... maybe even the one that's still in your skull. Let's look at some of the all-time scariest movie scarecrows ever to stalk the fields by moonlight... “Bubba” (Dark Night of the Scarecrow, 1981) This chilling made-for-tv classic presents one of the...

Holy hell, do I love all of these. The blog If It Were Stine, re-imagines some of our favorite horror films and turns them into R.L. Stine Goosebumps book covers.
Inside, check out some of my favorites which include Halloween III: Season of the Witch ("Night of the Pumpkin"), Videodrome ("Television Trauma"), Phantasm ("Mayhem at the Mortuary"), Cabin in the Woods ("Mayhem at the Monster Menagerie"), Fright Night ("My Neighbor is a Vampire") and Carrie ("The Girl With the Cast Iron Stare").
The artist uses the Goosebumps cover templates and creates stunning front and back covers, complete with re-imagined titles and a plot description on the back. How can I own these? I want. Head to the blog for other titles like Friday the 13th, Dark Night of the Scarecrow and more.

Halloween is just a couple months away now, which means we're pretty damn close to the time when those Halloween superstores will once again be popping up in a town near you. That also means you'd better start thinking about who/what you're going to be this year, whether you're going out trick or treating (you're never too old) or kicking back at a friend's house and pounding pumpkin beer. Thankfully, Trick or Treat Studios is here to help! Created by Chris Zephro in 2009, Trick or Treat Studios rose to prominence last year with the release of their officially licensed Michael Myers mask, at long last a quality Myers mask that was made available for a fraction of the cost similar masks had for years been selling for from indepedent mask makers. Zephro and sculptor Justin Mabry's attention to detail paid off, and the Myers mask instantly became not only a fan favorite,...

A big part of many successful horror films and horror film franchises is a mask that disguises the killer’s identity. The mask is often just as iconic as the killer. A good mask lends an extra layer of intrigue to the killer’s persona and gives him or her a sense of anonymity. The mask also serves to distance the killer from their victims and makes the maniac seem even less human. The mask makes it more difficult for the killer to emote, thereby making the character seem that much more mysterious. An effective mask makes a killer much more terrifying to audiences. To celebrate some of the more memorable masks in horror cinema history, we've put together a list of eleven of the most iconic masks worn by on-screen psychopaths. [Warning: Some Spoilers Ahead] Mrs. Tredoni’s Mask from Alice, Sweet Alice Mrs. Tredoni was so wicked in Alice, Sweet Alice and...

A Planet Fury-approved selection of notable genre releases for the first two weeks of September.
Mother's Day (1980) Anchor Bay Blu-ray & DVD Available Now
Though the company had yet to be formed, Mother’s Day was the first unofficial Troma film. Written and directed by Charles Kaufman (Loyd’s brother), it’s a violent, cheapjack revenge film with several of the patented Troma ingredients already in place. Uneasy comedic elements, amateur performances, sketchy scripting and aggressive misogyny abound. In spite of all this, Mother’s Day is also a fairly engrossing little exploitation film that seems to get better with age. Featuring the late, great Beatrice Pons as Mother Rose.
Special Features Include:
* Feature Length Audio Commentary with director Charles Kaufman and assistant art director Rex Piano
* Behind the Scenes of the Original Mother’s Day: includes Super 8 footage of screen tests and special effects (with Charles Kaufman commentary)

Demon: I'm not Regan.
Father Karras: Well, then let's introduce ourselves. I'm Damien Karras.
Demon: And I'm the Devil. Now kindly undo these straps.
Father Karras: If you're the Devil, why not make the straps disappear?
Demon: That's much too vulgar a display of power, Karras.
Demon: What an excellent day for an exorcism.
Father Karras: You would like that?
Demon: Intensely.
Father Karras: But wouldn't that drive you out of Regan?
Demon: It would bring us together.
Father Karras: You and Regan?
Demon: You and us.
Demon: Your mother sucks cocks in Hell, Karras, you faithless slime.
"Your mother sucks cocks in Hell." Perhaps never has a more colorful line been spoken in the history of film…but hold on, we'll get to that in a bit.
As a lover of horror and a Dread Central writer, many of the conversations I have often turn to a discussion of the genre.

Talk about a miracle of Made-For-tv goodness. Dark Night of the Scarecrow was released in 1981 to the CBS audience at large. It was released on October 24th no less, my birthday. I would have been one year old. I definitely did not catch this on the evening movie; I was probably keeping my parents from sleeping. While its really no more than a simple revenge film, the method and scope of the revenge is brutal, haunting… its damn near terrifying. Let’s not forget that this classic was virtually lost for nearly thirty years even with a small VHS run in the 80′s. It was released again in 2010 on DVD and horror history has thus been preserved. It Came From 1980 X needs you to consider picking this up on DVD and enjoying what is no longer a forgotten classic. It is remembered with love and terror.

As formats linger on, more and more movies get released. This is why we’ve been graced over the past few years with various releases (on Blu-ray and/or DVD) of such classics and obscurities as the original My Bloody Valentine, Dark Night of the Scarecrow, Night of the Creeps, The Monster Squad, The Dorm that Dripped Blood, Vampire Circus, Devil Dog: Hound of Hell, and Buio Omega (Beyond the Darkness). We’ve even gotten Blu-ray releases of classic clunkers like Troll 2 and Birdemic: Shock and Terror! Yet there are some surprising titles that haven’t gotten the high-def treatment (or maybe haven’t gotten it well enough).
