Academy Award winner Penelope Cruz has worked with some of the best and most innovative filmmakers around the world, including Woody Allen, Rob Marshall and Pedro Almodovar. Broken Embraces marks the fourth time that she has teamed up with Almodovar, this time playing the love of a filmmaker, who leaves him devastated when she dies in a car accident.
During a press conference for this latest Spanish language film, Penelope Cruz talked about playing powerful women, working with Almodovar since she was a teenager, and how she really doesn’t like to be labeled. Read what she had to say after the jump
Question: Over the years, you’ve done so many powerful roles and you’re obviously very comfortable in your own skin, portraying women who have maybe done drugs or who are in power. Is there any role that you would not do or that you have said no to?

Sabrina, Funny Face, My Fair Lady, Roman Holiday, Breakfast at Tiffany’s, the list of fashionable films by Audrey Hepburn goes on and on helping her cement a reputation as one of the silver screen’s most stylish stars ever. And doubtless there’ll be countless imitation Holly Golightys doing the rounds come Halloween, waving their cigarette holders in the air and shimmying in their little black dresses, but for those of you looking to add more authenticity to your Hepburn look, we’ve got good news as a costume worn by the Oscar-winning legend and other items are to go under the hammer at an auction in December.

Earlier this year we conducted a survey into the most celebrated fashions from films and named as the most iconic dresser in cinematic history was Audrey Hepburn. Okay, so this isn’t surprising. Miss Hepburn was a respected trendsetter (we’ve discussed many of her most popular onscreen styles from the ballet flats/ polo neck/ cropped trousers ensemble in Funny Face to the little black dress in Breakfast at Tiffany’s, and though she became synonymous with some of these looks, it was more her general spirit of elfin sophistication that established her reputation as a style queen. And we think more stars should follow in her fashionable footsteps…

Fashion Models: Where Did the Grace and Glamour Go?

Anyone who loves fashion as I do (and you wouldn't be reading this column if you didn't) should get to the Metropolitan Museum of Art immediately. They have the most wonderful exhibit, "Model as Muse," about the synergistic relationship between the great fashion photographers and the models who inspired them. The exhibit consists of rooms of beautiful couture and pictures and bios of the models who wore them. Against one wall you can see snippets of the Barbra Streisand film "Funny Face" and the greatest fashion icon of them all, Audrey Hepburn. I remembered so many models: Lisa Fonssagrives-Penn (her husband, Irving Penn, was one of the greatest fashion photographers); Sunny Harnett, Dovima, Dorian Leigh and my two personal favorites, Jean Patchett and Susy Parker.

Film icon Audrey Hepburn's timeless look has been influencing style for over five decades, and her look has even rubbed off on one of Hollywood’s freshest faces – Emma Roberts! 'Nancy Drew' star Roberts, who was born decades after Hepburn's 1957 classic 'Funny Face' hit theaters, reenacted a scene from the film as Hepburn for a photoshoot for Glamour's 70th Anniversary/American Icons issue. "She was so simply beautiful," Roberts tells the mag, going on to say, "And she loved charity work, something even more beautiful about her." Alicia Keys dressed as Michelle Obama for the issue, which hits stands on March 10.

Funny Face: Centennial Collection — 2-Disc Directed by: Stanley Donen
Cast: Audrey Hepburn, Fred Astaire, Kay Thompson
Time: 1 hr 30 min
Rating: Not Rated Plot: While looking for the new, fresh face of Quality Magazine, a photographer (Astaire) and the magazine’s publisher (Thompson) discover a hidden beauty in a reticent bookstore clerk (Hepburn). Who’s It For? Anyone who loves Gershwin musicals and Audrey Hepburn fanatics. Movie: It’s Audrey Hepburn, folks—you could roll her in grime and dip her in dirty feathers and she’d still be an unrivaled phenomenon. And if that wasn’t enough, her charisma in this film is off the charts. She is daring and sweet and absolutely fearless: watching Hepburn contort and boogie her way through a strange, modern dance routine in a smoky Parisian café is absolutely astounding; I cannot picture any movie

Paramount Home Entertainment released their first wave of "Centennial Collection" DVD releases on November 11, 2008 beginning with brand new 2-disc releases of Sunset Boulevard, Roman Holiday and Sabrina. These new 2-Disc releases come with the feature film on the first disc and a host of special features on the second disc as well as an 8-page booklet each. Paramount has done very little in giving much information on their intentions with these releases outside of giving press the following:
In keeping with its ongoing commitment to retrieving and presenting treasured films from its nearly 100-year history, Paramount Home Entertainment will launch of a new line of classics that were digitally mastered and restored called the Paramount Centennial Collection. Debuting on DVD November 11, 2008, the first three titles in the collection will be Roman Holiday (1953), Sunset Blvd. (1950) and Sabrina (1954). Chicago – Audrey Hepburn and Dane Cook. You won’t find that kind of variety too many places outside of HollywoodChicago’s DVD & Blu-Ray Round-Up. From serial killers to musicals to a British import, this week’s round-up features an exciting variety of titles.
Some of these are agreed-upon classics, while at least one features arguably the most critically despised actor alive. And before you see a certain 3D horror movie this weekend, you should check out the available special edition.
“Breakfast at Tiffany’s,” “Funny Face,” “Little Britain USA,” “My Best Friend’s Girl,” and “My Bloody Valentine”. Try and find a lineup that diverse anywhere other than the round-up.
(Check out the first edition of the round-up, the second edition, and a few Blu-Ray Round-Ups here and here.)
All of these titles were released on January 13th, 2009.
Breakfast at Tiffany’s was released by Paramount on January 13th,

Paramount Centennial Collection
Breakfast At Tiffany's / Funny Face
In the next couple days I will be doing one complete article for the first five releases from Paramount Home Entertainment for their Centennial Collection, which has certainly been pro Audrey Hepburn up to this point with four of the first five films released starring the '50s and '60s beauty (and boy was she beautiful). This week we have Breakfast at Tiffany's and Funny Face and I can only comment on Tiffany's as I have not seen Funny Face yet, but it is playing in the background as I type. Personally I am not much of a fan of Tiffany's even though it is considered to be such a classic. This isn't to say I dislike it as much as I just can't quite figure it out. Is it a comedy?

Paramount Pictures’ Centennial Collection chugs along, mining the 1950s and Audrey Hepburn again with the release on Tuesday of Funny Face. The musical, with Fred Astaire and Kay Thompson, unlike the earlier offerings in the series, has not aged well despite the loving restoration of the visuals.
Pop culture in the 1950s certainly centered on glamorous celebrities like Hepburn and the films were experimenting with visual techniques to combat the rise of television habits but sometimes their subjects were treated outlandishly.
Maggie Prescott (Thompson) is the force of nature that edits Glamour, er, Mode, er, Quality magazine. The magazine wants to shoot on location, to lend a patina of intellectual sheen to the usually vapid model who seems more interesting in exaggerated poses than anything natural. She and top fashion photographer Dick Avery (Astaire) spontaneously decide on a “sinister” looking bookstore in Greenwich Village, hail a few cabs, and go in search.
