Vince Staples gave a reality check to artists and fans alike after being asked about Kendrick Lamar and Drake’s beef during a panel on Saturday (May 4th). While fielding a question about the feud, Staples spotlighted major changes in the music industry particularly impacting Black music.
During Staples’ sitdown with Long Beach Mayor Rex Richard for a town hall at the inaugural Youth Day in the Lbc, one fan was eager to get the rapper’s take on the feud dominating hip-hop over the past several weeks. In response to the question, the 30-year-old Long Beach native explained he has been signed to Universal Music Group since he was 17 years old and proceeded to break down bigger picture issues.
“That record label just folded all of its independent labels and subsidiaries into each other,” Staples said. “None of them exist no more. They fired all the heads of the...

In a recent editorial, we highlighted “lifestyle” festivals as one type of event that is thriving in this challenging turning point for the music industry. If you consider that the industry itself is a lifestyle in its own right, the announcement of the new Elsewhere Festival and Conference makes perfect sense. Taking place in Wichita, Kansas on June 21st and 22nd, Elsewhere is designed to bolster opportunities for artists and music professionals in the community.
But that doesn’t mean it’s taking a strictly local approach to its lineup: Headliners include Killer Mike, Steve Aoki, Vince Staples, and Lane 8. Also on the bill are Badbadnotgood, TOKiMONSTA, Snow Tha Product, Le Youth, Blu DeTiger, Sunflower Bean, Pup, Sudan Archives, A Place to Bury Strangers, Oh He Dead, Thick, and more. As for Wichita-based talent, there’s Breeding Brainbow, Flake, Glass Age, Goaty the Kid, Paris Jane, Sir Charles, Apathy Unit.

Exclusive: There will be quite a few familiar faces roaming the halls of Willard R. Abbott Elementary in the coming weeks.
After a surprise cameo from 2024 Oscar nominee Bradley Cooper during Sunday’s special episode of Abbott Elementary, ABC is keeping up the momentum.
Lana Condor, Keegan-Michael Key, Cree Summer, Tatyana Ali and Karan Soni will all be guest stars/recurring guest stars in various upcoming Season 3 episodes.
No details yet on how each of these actors will come into contact with the teachers at Abbott.
Audiences won’t have to wait much longer for them to start rolling through, though. Summer is set to appear in her first episode on Wednesday. Here’s the logline for that one:
Janine spearheads a pilot program that brings a librarian to Abbott; however, when friction arises with one of the teachers, it strains Janine’s relationships with both parties. Meanwhile, both...

“Gang shit, I invented that, huh?” asks Schoolboy Q on “Pop,” a track from Blue Lips, his first album in nearly five years. It’s clearly an overstatement. But give the former Hoover Street Crip credit: Back in the early 2010s, he fused the open-eared, genre-less sensibility of Tumblr rap with vintage L.A. gangsta flows in classic moments like “Hands on the Wheel” and “Druggys Wit Hoes Again.” Along with Vince Staples, Boogie and others, Q marked a clear break from the city’s G-funk identity, even as he...

The vignettes from the life of rapper Vince Staples provide some rib-tickling comedy, but the show functions more as a critique of the black experience in America. The floating in two boats gets the show drowned, sadly. But for whatever it was worth, The Vince Staples Show offered us an insight into the intricacies of meager fame and how someone like Vince dealt with it. The show had no fixation on a linear progression, as in raising the stakes of each episode methodically. We got a topsy-turvy world, and I think the hope was that we would get lost in it, but sadly, we couldn’t.
Spoilers Ahead
How Did Vince Get Out Of Jail?
The show began by showing us how Vince got arrested. He apparently took a U-turn and was stopped for speeding. The arresting officer was a Caucasian man, and the next thing we know, Vince wound up in jail.

There have been shows in the past that are based on the ‘experiences’ of a real-life celebrity. The experiences are not necessarily real, but for an artist whose imagination is too strong for their own good, they might have an encounter in their head and it might appear real. Something similar seems to be happening in The Vince Staples Show, where real-life rapper Vince has some odd experiences as he tries to navigate his personal and professional life. It’s like Louie, but a little dull, and Vince doesn’t yet have those stories from his real life that can be sublimated to get weird half-hour episodes.
It’s evident from the very first episode that Vince will not ‘act’. That is for other performers to do. He will simply ‘be’. That is not necessarily a bad thing, but then the scenario has to be molded in such a way...

Rapper Vince Staples plays a semi-fictionalized version of himself in “The Vince Staples Show,” debuting today on Netflix. The comedy, which skewers celebrity culture and depicts Staples’ surreal adventures, comes after roles in the films “Dope” and “White Boys Can’t Jump” and series like “Insecure” and “Abbott Elementary.”
Your character’s relationship with money is an important theme of the show. Why did you want to explore that?
It’s a big part of what we deem to be celebrity, and it’s extremely subjective. You ask a lot of people who know me personally, and I’m hyper-successful and I’ve made it to the upper echelon. But most people who live in the world don’t know who Vince Staples is. I think that’s a very interesting thing as far as how we perceive success or fame.
Many of the episodes start in reality but take surreal turns.

It’s just another day being Vince Staples. The rapper-actor is making his Netflix debut with his first comedy series, The Vince Staples Show, premiering today. The show follows the Long Beach, California, native through the challenges and surprises of his day-to-day life being sort of rich and kind of famous in his hometown. The five-episode series is equal parts comedy and social commentary on a rapper trying to do his best to navigate the dynamics of business, family, and social status. See what he has to say about it and more in our video interview, above. The 30-year-old has made TV appearances on ABC’s Abbott Elementary and voice acting on Family Guy and American Dad. Strap in and prepare for foot races and high-speed chases through the streets of Long Beach, California, in a brand-new limited comedic series from the mind of rapper, actor, and producer Vince Staples.
Launching in February, The Vince Staples Show stars Staples as, well, Vince Staples and explores his unpredictable life over the course of five satirical tales. This show was years in the making: He previously flexed his writing, acting, and directing muscles with music videos and even episodic shorts. While those experiences informed him as he made this series, he still felt as though he was wading into uncharted territory.
“The biggest difference between doing this versus the way I had done it before was knowing the rules in order to break the rules,” he tells Tudum. “It’s about respecting, understanding, and conceptualizing the initial ideas properly to create the thing you want to create, in a...

In one of the best episodes of The Vince Staples Show – a dark Netflix comedy following the fictionalized life of the titular rapper – Vince slowly but surely leverages a bank robbery he’s caught in the crosshairs of to his advantage. Perhaps this quiet doggedness is autobiographical; in reality, Vince Staples has been actively trying to produce his own television show for about eight years, finally getting it over the line with its Feb. 15 premiere.

That’s the question Vince’s girlfriend, Deja (Andrea Ellsworth) asks him in the last moments of the fifth and final episode of The Vince Staples Showlimited series. Vince replies with a cavalier “Not really,” despite having just survived a mad dash through the city, dodging bullets from a long-lost nemesis hell-bent on killing him. Seems pretty interesting! Staples had a challenging upbringing, but he found refuge in academics and extracurricular activities. He attended Optimal Christian Academy during his formative years, where he had a positive and influential experience. However, he moved around frequently, attending several high schools in different cities, such as Jordan High School in Long Beach, Mayfair High School in Lakewood, and Esperanza High School in Anaheim. Idles have announced their fifth studio album, Tangk. The LP is out February 16th via Partisan Records, and as a preview, they’ve shared “Dancer,” the lead single that features LCD Soundsystem’s James Murphy and Nancy Whang on background vocals. Check it out below.
Idles drew from a wide swath of influences in making Tangk. The record was produced by the band’s guitarist Mark Bowen, as well as Radiohead’s go-to boardsman Nigel Godrich and Denzel Curry/Vince Staples collaborator Kenny Beats. A press release describes the project as more love-oriented than the post-punks’ previous efforts, which often dealt in political commentary.

The producer Kenny Beats has noticed some strange phenomena at his shows over the past few years. For one, the crowds have gotten noticeably bigger, as have merch sales and streams. But most notably, he says, he’s grown accustomed to members of the audience viewing him more as a friend than a performer. This is thanks to his massively popular Discord server, which hosts approximately 135,000 users and has rooms dedicated to questions about audio engineering and specific production software, as well as general channels dedicated to banter or games.

Seemingly opposite street hoopers, Jeremy — an injury-prone former star — and Kamal — a has-been prodigy still clinging to his dream — team up to take one final shot at living out their dreams. The pair work as basketball hustlers who sucker would-be foes into the idea that white men can’t play as well as Black men. “White Men Can’t Jump” stars Sinqua Walls and Jack Harlow, and debuts this Friday, May 19 exclusively streaming on Hulu. So, do you have an appetite for sports films after the entertaining true life-inspired Air from a few weeks ago? To be more specific do you have, as Cheech and Chong most famously proclaimed, a “basketball jones”? Oh, here’s the movie for you! Now unlike the earlier film, this isn’t set in the 1980s, though it has a connection to a previous decade. And it’s not “inspired by true events”. This is more of a rollicking “buddy comedy” and is a remake of a movie from over 30 years ago (the decade being the 1990s). Perhaps it will once and for all either prove this true or false per the still provocative title, White Men Can’T Jump.
Speaking of time, this version starts with a flashback going back only six or seven years. It’s a telling TV interview on a cable sports show profiling high school basketball...

“White Men Can’t Jump” holds a special place in a lot of moviegoers’ hearts; while not the enduring sports classic that writer-director Ron Shelton delivered with his baseball mash note “Bull Durham,” the buddy comedy vividly captures the world of pick-up basketball players, and features three standout performances by Wesley Snipes, Woody Harrelson and Rosie Perez. Director Calmatic’s 2023 remake not only fails to recapture the energy of the first film but seems to misunderstand the cinematic language of streetball, and is largely uninterested in utilizing stars Sinqua Walls and Jack Harlow except as delivery systems for exposition.
Updated only in its excess of contemporary slang and overwrought backstories, “White Men Can’t Jump” exemplifies the aversion to risk and lack of imagination in storytellers mining intellectual property at the behest of blandest-common-denominator-seeking corporate overlords.

Plot: Multi-platinum rap superstar Jack Harlow makes his big-screen debut as Jeremy, a former star of the game whose injuries stalled his career, and Sinqua Walls stars as Kamal, once a promising player who derailed his own future in the sport. Juggling tenuous relationships, financial pressures and serious internal struggles, the two ballers—opposites who are seemingly miles apart—find they might have more in common than they imagined possible.
Review: When White Men Can’t Jump was released in 1992, it came at a time when basketball was viewed much differently than it had been decades prior. The chemistry between Woody Harrelson’s unexpected baller and Wesley Snipes’ experienced player made for a mismatch that would work in their favor as Ron Shelton’s movie became a box office hit. Three decades later, White Men Can’t Jump gets a contemporary update as streamers continue to mine their IP. While the remake...

Sinqua Walls and Jack Harlow fail to recall the magic of the 1992 hit in a shallow and mostly unfunny nostalgia play
White Men Can’t Jump did not need remaking. Rosie Perez, queen of the scene-stealers, made sure of that in 1992. “Listening versus hearing” remains among the all-time on-screen debates. Even the title encapsulated a time when basketball fandom in the 80s and 90s really was a black-and-white issue. The A-story about the mobsters hunting for their vigorish? Completely incidental. The R-rating for a comedy? No argument there.
That’s not to say the update, which premieres on Hulu, is an airball. Power’s Sinqua Walls certainly looks the part of Kamal, the hoops prodigy, to the point where the script even makes fun of his uncanny resemblance to the Miami Heat great Dwyane Wade. Teyana Taylor brings her true life experience as an NBA wife to the part of Kamal’s partner,...

Jack Harlow is opening up about working with the late Lance Reddick on one of the last projects before his death.
The “First Class” rapper told Entertainment Tonight on Thursday at the premiere of his new film White Men Can’t Jump that it “was an absolute pleasure to be around” the John Wick actor.
“I got about two days on set with Lance,” Harlow said. “I’m so glad you brought the legend up. Rest in peace to Lance.”
The Wire star died “suddenly … from natural causes” in March, Reddick’s publicist Mia Hansen told The Hollywood Reporter at the time. He was 60.
The Calmatic-directed remake of the 1992 hit comedy has Harlow and Sinqua Walls taking on the roles of Jeremy and Kamal – a pair of basketball hustlers, who seem to be complete opposites but end up learning they have more in common than they thought and team up to earn extra cash.

Sinqua Walls and Jack Harlow are Los Angeles streetball hustlers in the official trailer for Hulu’s remake of White Men Can’t Jump.
Walls (Friday Night Lights) and rapper Harlow — making his film debut — take over the roles played by Wesley Snipes and Woody Harrelson, respectively, in the 1992 hit comedy by writer-director Ron Shelton.
The trailer is full of the on-court trash-talk that the original machine-gunned so deftly, with Harlow being referred to as “a yoga teacher” who is allowed to enter the gym and told he’s dressed like “a white girl at Whole Foods” and “wearing a fake-ass Richard Simmons outfit,” among other slams.

Rapper Jack Harlow is set to make his acting debut in Kenya Barris’ reboot of White Men Can’t Jump, and Hulu has shared a new trailer ahead of the film’s premiere next month.
In the clip, Harlow’s streetball skills are established when he makes more baskets than his soon-to-be partner Kamal (Sinqua Walls). Before they team up, however, Harlow’s Jeremy takes offense to being underestimated with cringeworthy lines like, “You assumed I couldn’t hoop because I’m white, which is incredibly outdated.” Kamal responds by calling him out for dressing like “a white girl at Whole Foods.”
The movie is a remake of Ron Shelton’s 1992 film of the same name starring Woody Harrelson and Wesley Snipes, and centers around the story of Jeremy and Kamal getting on the same page while trying to win a $500,000 basketball tournament. "Hustle harder." 20th Century Studios has revealed the full-length official trailer for their upcoming remake of White Men Can't Jump, this one directed by Calmatic (following up his remake of House Party that opened earlier this year). The original White Men Can't Jump movie, co-starring Wesley Snipes & Woody Harrelson, opened in 1992 and was a huge hit at the time. I remember everyone talking about it then. This remake reuses the exact some concept with a few modern tweaks - moving it to the West Coast this time. It's about a pair of basketball hustlers who team up to earn some extra cash - starring Sinqua Walls and Jack Harlow in this update. The cast also includes Lance Reddick (Rip), Teyana Taylor, Laura Harrier, Tamera Kissen, Myles Bullock, Vince Staples, and Zak Steiner. This looks damn good! Better than expected, staying true to what made the original great. One of the...

ABC's "Abbott Elementary" follows a group of passionate (and eccentric) teachers at the titular fictional Philadelphia school as they forge friendships and help one another meet the challenges of working in an underfunded district. While the award-winning, breakout workplace comedy deftly highlights real issues that exist within the US public education system, there's also tons of humor and heart. For instance, there's that slow-burn romance between optimistic second-grade teacher Janine (Quinta Brunson) and newly elected full-time teacher, Gregory (Tyler James Williams). It's one plotline fans have been following with bated breath since the very beginning, and the season two finale, which premiered April 19, gave the duo another milestone - still without them officially getting together.
Every time a spark of their undeniable chemistry flies on screen, we can't help but wonder if these two will finally give in to their feelings (or continue to awkwardly avoid their obvious connection). So,...

Spoiler Alert: This interview contains spoilers for “Franklin Institute,” the Season 2 finale of “Abbott Elementary.”
Will they? Won’t they? They won’t, at least for now.
Though Janine (series creator Quinta Brunson) and Gregory (Tyler James Williams) finally had their first kiss at a teacher conference in Episode 16 of “Abbott Elementary’s” second season, they chalk it up to a “whoops,” bury their feelings and continue forward as friends and colleagues.
There’s a hitch of course: Janine is dating Gregory’s friend, Maurice (Vince Staples). So in Episode 17, the blushing pair head to Bone Town — Maurice’s favorite barbecue spot — to confess their mistake to Maurice and basically break up with him together.
Finally, Janine and Gregory are single at the same time and they get closer and closer as the season wraps up. But at the start of the finale, Janine runs into Maurice again, who says...

Janelle James has received awards and fan adoration for her breakout role as the stylish and self-centered Principal Ava Coleman on "Abbott Elementary." But just five years ago, she was living in the back of a bike shop in New York. "There was an air mattress and a rat," James said in Variety's April/May cover story. The shop belonged to a friend who let her sleep there four nights a week between comedy gigs around the city. "I would wake up and get out before the store opened. I'd just walk around all day with my stuff until I did shows and then I'd go back to sleep."

A pair of virtual celebrities — the “lazy and spectacularly incompetent” Janky and Guggimon — could be starring in Amazon’s next Prime Video original series.
Amazon announced that it is leading a 20 million investment round in character-design studio and art toy maker Superplastic, and alongside the funding Amazon Studios signed a first-look TV and film pact with Superplastic.
Under the first-look deal, Amazon Studios currently is in early development on “The Janky & Guggimon Show,” featuring Superplastic’s two most famous synthetic celebrities. Per the companies, the show follows the adventures of “two lazy and spectacularly incompetent best friends who are hell-bent on getting rich and famous but leave a trail of chaos and destruction in their wake.”
The cat-like Janky is described as a “lovable idiot who spends his spare time scamming celebrities,” while the rabbit-esque Guggimon (who displays disturbingly sharp teeth) is a “fashion icon and master manipulator who’s too narcissistic to care.

In 1967’s The Graduate, Dustin Hoffman’s fresh out of college Benjamin Braddock is told the future is in plastics. In 2023, Amazon is taking some of that advice to heart and betting some of its future on Superplastic.

Additionally, the Paul Budnitz and Huck Gee formed Superplastic have inked a first-look development deal with Amazon Studios to bring their saucy street level characters to the streaming screen.
To that end and drawing from some of Superplastic’s Og synthetic celebrities, The Janky & Guggimon Show is already in development at Amazon.

20th Century Studios has released a first-look image from ‘White Men Can’t Jump’ while also revealing the release date for the all-new comedy, which begins streaming on 19 May 2023, exclusively on Disney+.
The all-new comedy is a modern remix of the 1992 film that celebrates the streetball hustling culture of Los Angeles. Multi-platinum rap superstar Jack Harlow makes his movie debut as Jeremy, a former star of the game whose injuries stalled his career, and Sinqua Walls stars as Kamal, once a promising player who derailed his own future in the sport. Juggling tenuous relationships, financial pressures and serious internal struggles, the two ballers—opposites who are seemingly miles apart—find they might have more in common than they imagined possible.
