Catching up with a cultural icon is always exciting, but catching up with Lucy Lawless from her country home takes the cake.
We talked with Lucy about My Life Is Murder Season 3, which premieres today on Acorn TV. Our zoom chat included expansive views of her lovely home (where she finally has wireless), and a peek at her gorgeous dog enjoying the day.
Lucy is excited about the latest season of My Life Is Murder, with good reason. She's still filming in her hometown of Auckland, and it thrills her to share more of it with her fans.
"When people want to see New Zealand, they never think about Auckland. It's just sort of the port that you go into, and everybody scrams to more well-known places," Lucy said.
"But, my city is beautiful and vibrant and fun. You just got to look into the community some. The theater's amazing.

"I almost put makeup on for you. And then I thought better of it," I said when Lucy Lawless and I jumped on a Zoom call to discuss My Life Is Murder Season 2.
That frank talk didn't deter Lucy at all. "Oh, good for you. No, I did put makeup on for you, but many hours ago," she said.
Let's be honest. Covid has changed a lot of things, like the desire to dress up, for instance. But it was not the motivation for the location of My Life Is Murder moving from Australia to New Zealand. Lucy just wanted to return home and share it with you.
It doesn't even affect the story that much, Lucy said. She was apprehensive about "being able to reproduce that with an entirely new crew and a lot of new players and new writers," but she's very thankful to say that they did.

Lucy Lawless’ legion of fans have watched her search for redemption as an ancient Greek warrior princess in Xena, deceive and seduce her way to power as Lucretia in Spartacus, witch her way through Salem as Countess Marburg, and hunt down Ash in Ash vs. the Evil Dead. But while she may be best known for her roles in science fiction and fantasy, she’s also excellent at bringing murderers to justice in My Life Is Murder as Alexa Crowe, a retired police officer who continues solving mysteries.
Despite Alexa’s former profession, the show shares more with Murder, She Wrote than police procedurals. Or, perhaps “Murder She Wrote crossed with something a bit sassy, because Alexa actually gets laid on occasion, so it’s not exactly Miss Marple,” Lucy Lawless says of the show. In contrast to the more historical and fantastic roles Lawless has played in the past,...

Lucy Lawless cemented her place as one of TV’s most iconic action stars with her six-season run as the star of “Xena: Warrior Princess,” but the actress says she’s glad to leave that part of her career in the past.

‘My Life is Murder.’
Cjz’s private investigator series My Life is Murder and Closer Productions’ four-part drama The Hunting have been acquired by UK broadcasters.
Multi-channel operator UKTV will screen the 10-part Cjz production, which follows Lucy Lawless as former homicide cop Alexa Crowe as she investigates baffling and bizarre murders, on its crime drama channel Alibi.
Directed by Leah Purcell, Mat King and Jovita O’Shaugnessy and produced by Elisa Argenzio and Cjz head of development Claire Tonkin, the series premiered on Network 10 on Wednesday night.
The first episode drew 482,000 viewers in the mainland capitals, trailing Shaun Micallef’s Mad as Hell’s 495,000, despite the fact the ABC mistakenly put to air the previous week’s episode of Micallef.
However the 7-day and 28-day figures for 10’s murder-mystery are bound to be a lot higher. The consolidated total for Five Bedrooms, for example, was 642,000 in the five metros,...

An above-average riff on the reliable “hunting humans for sport” scenario that’s been around at least as far as 1932’s Rko thriller “The Most Dangerous Game,” “The Furies” marks a solid feature debut for Aussie writer-director Tony D’Aquino. A pacy tale about kidnapped women being butchered by mutant monstrosities while sickos pay to watch online, this well-produced Ozploitation effort has the heavy-duty gore to excite horror hounds and packs enough of a girl-power punch to avoid dismissal as just another misogynist slasher movie. Debuting in Asia at BiFan after screenings in Brussels Fantastic Festival and Edinburgh, these “Furies” are certain to be let loose at many more genre-related events, and also have a shot at theatrical exposure in Australia and beyond. Local release details are pending.

Stars: Airlie Dodds, Linda Ngo, Taylor Ferguson, Ebony Vagulans, Helana Sawires, Harriet Davies, Kaitlyn Boye, Jessica Baker, Danielle Horvat | Written and Directed by Tony D’Aquino
This supremely gory outback slasher is an efficient, smartly paced horror flick that puts a series of inventive twists on some familiar genre ideas. As such, it represents a significant debut for Australian writer-director Tony D’Aquino and marks him out as a serious horror talent to watch.
After a brief prologue, giving a hint of what’s in store, the film opens with teenage best friends Kayla (Airlie Dodds) and Maddie (Ebony Vagulans), having an argument after spraying “Fuck the Patriarchy” in an underpass. After Maddie storms off, both girls are kidnapped by masked men and Kayla wakes up in a box in the outback with “Beauty 6” written on it.
She quickly discovers that she’s not alone, and that as well as...

(L-r): Nadine Garner, Sophie Wright, Nick Russell, Stephen Curry and Paul Denny in ‘Mr Black’.
Cjz MD Nick Murray and CEO Matt Campbell are grappling with three major issues facing the screen industry as the company ramps up its production and development slates.
They identify the challenges as the rising cost of drama budgets; a shortage of top-class writers given the talent drain to the Us and UK; and finding original concepts for factual and factual entertainment shows.
Murray questions why drama is more expensive to produce than comedy, observing: “I don’t know that the additional money that goes into drama is necessarily visible on screen to the audience.
“The costs of drama are going up and we need to be making it cheaper. There are work practices which make it impossible to make drama at the price it should be made at. We should be employing people differently or with more flexibility,...
