Showrunner Todd A. Kessler and executive producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura joined Deadline’s Contenders TV: Los Angeles event to discuss inspiration, casting and balancing facts with fiction for Apple TV+’s latest historical series The New Look.
The series, set under the Nazi occupation of Paris during WWII, tells the story of fashion designers Christian Dior (Ben Mendelsohn), Coco Chanel (Juliette Binoche), and their contemporaries as they navigate the horrors of World War II and launch modern fashion. As Dior rises to prominence with his groundbreaking, iconic imprint of beauty and influence, Chanel’s reign as a world-famous fashion designer is jeopardized.
Even in a world mostly comprised of silky fabrics and glittering emblems, bringing a historical drama to life is not without its challenges. Just once, it would be refreshing to see a serial killer movie in which the detectives investigating a series of horrific murders were actually normal, well-adjusted individuals. The kind of cops who leave their work at the office, go home to their families, and drink only the occasional beer or glass of wine at dinner. The ones, in other words, who don’t live up to the title of the new thriller featuring a top-billed Samuel L. Jackson but in which the real leading player is Gianni Capaldi, who also co-scripted.
That’s definitely not the case with Damaged, a routine cop movie mainly distinguished by its extensive Scottish locations. Jackson plays Dan Lawson, a Chicago detective still haunted by a bunch of killings years earlier in which one of the victims was his own girlfriend. When a similar series of murders — in which the victims’ bodies are dismembered and...

As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, Kessler passed away on Thursday, April 4, at his home in Marina del Rey following a brief illness, according to his brother, author and columnist Stephen Kessler. Born on March 23, 1936, in Seattle, Washington, Kessler moved with his family to Beverly Hills, California, at an early age. He developed a love for cars and began participating in the Sports Car Club of America races at 16 years old. He was also a team driver with Chuck Daigh for the Scarab race cars built by his close friend Lance Reventlow in the late 1950s. Through racing, Kessler became friends with actors James Dean and Steve McQueen. Kessler was one of the last people to speak to Dean before his tragic death on September...

[This story contains spoilers from the first season of The New Look.]
The first season of Apple TV+’s The New Look ends with Christian Dior (Ben Mendelsohn) debuting his revolutionary 1947 collection that would be dubbed “the new look” by Harper’s Bazaar editor-in-chief Carmel Snow (Glenn Close). The show then quickly flashes forward through some of the Dior brand’s iconic looks over the decades, which seems to suggest that the series is done with Dior’s story.
But creator Todd A. Kessler tells The Hollywood Reporter that he has a long runway planned for the series, which has yet to be officially renewed for a second season. A potential season two would continue to focus on Dior and Coco Chanel (Juliette Binoche) before subsequent seasons would stay with the Dior brand as it was inherited by Yves Saint Laurent.

Editor’s Note: The following post contains spoilers for “The New Look” Episode 9.
With the penultimate episode of “The New Look” comes the end of the road for Elsa Lombardi (Emily Mortimer), one of the most fascinating and fictionalized characters in Todd Kessler’s Apple TV+ series. After a fight with Coco (Juliette Binoche), a critical interaction with Spatz (Claes Bang), and a fatal overdose, Elsa is found dead while Coco weeps over her body.
But a quick scan of history reveals that Elsa Lombardi never existed. According to Kessler, Mortimer’s character is an amalgam of two figures in Chanel’s life, fused for narrative purposes to serve the series. One of those is the French-Polish musician Misia Sert, who met Chanel in 1917, and the other is British socialite Vera Lombardi, whose lifestyle inspired the House of Chanel.
The real-life Lombardi was Chanel’s way into British high society,...

The Cannes Marché du Film is partnering with France’s National Film Board (Cnc) on the launch of a new program called Cannes Remakes.
Set to take place on May 20 on the Cnc Beach, the half-day event will showcase a selection of European IP whose rights are available for film adaptations. The roster will be sourced from France, Spain and Italy. The program will include a pitching session, followed by a pre-arranged series of one-to-one meetings, as well as a networking cocktail event for invited guests.
In unveiling the program, organizers pointed out the market for adaptations has boomed in recent years, bolstered by the demand from global streaming services. They said film remakes, in particular, have established themselves as a lucrative avenue, providing “lower risk and proven marketability.”

The central conflict between humans and the Covenant forces reaches a significant juncture as Paramount+’s cosmic warfare epic Halo nears the end of its second season. Previously, Master Chief arrived on the planet Onyx along with Halsey, Kwan, Soren, and Laera, and upon reaching the Unsc base, they confronted the only active Silver team member, Spartan Kai, who had been misguided by Ackerson into abandoning Reach. Kai was shocked out of her wits as Chief exposed the heinous machinations of Oni, which were the prime reason for the fall of Reach as well as the death of their teammate, Spartan Vannak. However, to keep the ruse of her obedience to Oni intact, Kai delivered a brutal beatdown to Chief, knocking him unconscious in the process.

[The following story contains spoilers from the first four episodes of Apple TV+’s The New Look.]
The New Look not only marks creator Todd A. Kessler’s first series for Apple TV+, but it’s also his first project in years without his previous writing partners, his brother Glenn and collaborator Daniel Zelman, with whom Kessler co-created Damages and Bloodline.
Instead, Kessler has partnered with veteran film producer Lorenzo Di Bonaventura, through their dB-ak production company, on the series about how Christian Dior, Coco Chanel and other French fashion designers of the time dealt with the struggles of World War II and launched modern fashion. The name refers to how Harper’s Bazaar editor-in-chief Carmel Snow described Dior’s 1947 collection.
Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter recently, both Kessler and Di Bonaventura were enthusiastic about their new professional pairing. When asked how working on this series was different than his previous endeavors, Kessler was quick to offer praise.

Eighties television was a land of new ideas that hadn’t been seen before. It was also a place where old tropes were made shiny and new with a modern sheen that intrigued audiences and would produce classics like the hospital drama St. Elsewhere and the crime drama Hill Street Blues.
It would be a humdinger of a decade within the genre of mystery and detectives. It would see the return of the iconic detective Mike Hammer in a new series and would also bring us the dramedy Moonlighting. We’d also be treated to one of the greatest performances of Sherlock Holmes ever with the amazing Jeremy Brett.
It would also bring us a female detective who, in a world filled with male counterparts, couldn’t catch a break until she made up her own male counterpart in a boss named Remington Steele. The rest, as they say, is history,...

Fashion fans are sure to be scrutinizing every detail of The New Look, the 10-episode Apple TV+ series that tells the story of Christian Dior (played by Ben Mendelsohn) launching his eponymous Paris label with the now-legendary 1947 New Look collection that inspired the production’s title.
It’s among the reasons both creator Todd A. Kessler (Damages, Bloodline) and costume designer Karen Serreau (The Serpent Queen) knew they had to approach Dior’s seminal post-World War II designs with an unrelenting attention to detail. In other words, the participation of the brand that Dior built was essential.
“Dior was very generous in opening up its archives to us,” Serreau tells The Hollywood Reporter. “The way Todd has crafted the story, early on we see Christian talking to an audience at the Sorbonne in 1955, with a runway showing of several designs, and then of course later we see the debut showing of the 1947 collection.

We have reached the third episode of the second season of Paramount+’s Halo, and already pacing issues have started popping up, which was a major drawback of the first season as well. Narrative wise, the point where the last episode ended was supposed to be the initiator of the next stage of human-Covenant conflict, but the third episode stalls the flow abruptly by working around a very trope-y and contrived situation that comes off as distracting.
Previously, the first episode of the second season established the impending Covenant invasion as the central crisis, as Chief suspects the presence of Covenant forces in the Unsc colonies after his experience on Sanctuary, which gets glassed by the alien aggressors. Chief comes into conflict with newly appointed Spartan program head and Oni chief, Colonel Ackerson, who actively tries to bury the narrative under the rug by questioning Chief’s mental condition. Later,...

Plot:: This emotionally thrilling series reveals the shocking story of how fashion icon Christian Dior and his contemporaries, including Coco Chanel, Pierre Balmain, and Cristóbal Balenciaga navigated the horrors of World War Il and launched modern fashion.
Review: Fashion design has found great success as fodder for reality series and romantic comedies. Films like The Devil Wears Prada, Robert Altman’s Pret-a-Porter, and Ryan Murphy’s limited series Halston have looked at the intricacies of the fashion world, mostly from a contemporary standpoint. The New Look sheds a different light on a dark moment in history.
Set under the Nazi occupation of Paris during WWII, the series tells the story of Christian Dior’s rise to prominence, as he was pivotal in launching modern fashion despite navigating the horrors of the war. Of course, this story couldn’t be told without Coco Chanel who was one of the reigning fashion designers at the time.
During Monday’s Apple TV+ Television Critics Association panel, series creator Todd Kessler mused about Chanel’s lasting legacy, which has managed to largely escape mass criticism despite her clear ties to the Nazi occupation. Throughout World War II, Chanel operated as an intelligence operative for the Nazis and was in a romantic relationship with a high-ranking German officer.
“I can’t say why it’s not on specific people’s radars,” Kessler said of Chanel’s past. “But...

Prime Video series “Mr. & Mrs. Smith” has unveiled first look images.
The series is a reimagining of the 2005 film starring Brad Pit and Angelina Jolie as Mr. Smith and Mrs. Smith, respectively. In this iteration, Donald Glover (“The Martian”) stars as John Smith, while Maya Erskine (“PEN15”) stars as Jane Smith.
This new version features John and Jane both landing jobs working for an international spy agency where they must pose as spouses Mr. Smith and Mrs. Smith. As they navigate a new mission each week, they find themselves falling in love with one another, complicating — and compromising — their “strictly business” relationship. Notably, this version features an intentional sham marriage between two strangers, as compared to the 2005 original, in which Mr. Smith and Mrs. Smith were married without being aware of each other’s identity as an assassin.

Like every production company, Jumpcut wants to discover new talent. As a data-driven startup, it leans on machine-learning algorithms to analyze content on YouTube and Reddit — everything from production value to the emotional response of commenters — and spits out a list of prospective content creators.
