Leanne Tonkes, Martin Sacks and Victoria Garrett.
Martin Sacks enjoyed working with director Victoria Garrett in her debut feature Don’t Tell so much that he was keen to collaborate with her again.
The actor had been mulling the idea of a film about a father and son relationship which is tested by an unforeseen tragedy, so he pitched the concept to Garrett early last year.
She immediately sparked to the idea and is now developing the project with Sacks, screenwriter John Ridley and producer Leanne Tonkes.
Sacks will play the lead, the father of two teenage sons who live in a small country town. He’s an ordinary man on an ordinary day until he finds his life turned upside down by an indiscriminate tragedy.
Susie Porter, Nathaniel Dean and Daniela Farinacci will play supporting roles.
For the key role of the 15-year-old son the producers are keen to find a fresh face.

Title: Storm Surfers Directors: Justin McMillan and Chris Nelius Filmic evidence of both mankind’s folly and its boundless capacity for thrill-seeking still connected to the natural world, “Storm Surfers,” presented in 3-D in select theaters but also available in regular 2-D, offers up a look at surfing legends and best friends Tom Carroll and Ross Clarke-Jones. Narrated by Toni Collette, somewhat ironically for such a “Fire in the Belly”-type work, this gorgeously lensed affair is one part “Redbull cinema” (okay, maybe one-and-a-half) but also one part fraternal rumination, buoyed by the maturity and rootedness of its subjects. “Storm Surfers” unfolds in and around Australia, homeland to the aforementioned pair. Have you ever seen a killer wave, mate? Well, have you ever seen a killer wave . . . in 3D? This question resounds above all when watching Storm Surfers 3D, Chris Nelius and Justin McMillan's bodacious, x-treme, etc. doc about two Australian bros who love to surf. All right, they're not just any two bros—they're Tom Carroll and Ross Clarke-Jones, surfing legends who spend their time chasing the biggest waves around, with a team that includes a meteorologist and a fleet of jet skis. Yet despite the hoopla about finding "new waves" and exploring "hidden" surfing locations, the principal reason for the film's existence seems to be showing its heroes surfing giant waves in 3D. That 3D is gorgeous, but as wave after wave crashes by without much else happening, you might begin t...

In this roundup from the Encore and Mumbrella Annual, we remember the seven bravest advertisers from the last 12 months.
1. Coles
To shamelessly bombard the Australian public with wave after wave of irritating supermarket sing-alongs shows serious balls, if not bravery. But digging up ageing rockers Status Quo for a re-recording of the original Down, Deeper and Down, who played with guitars, drums and keyboards decorated with Coles’ trademark big red hands, showed true daring. Now on a tour of Australia, the track used in the ad is the very first song on the Quo’s new album, which is sold exclusively in Coles supermarkets.
2. McDonald’s
The year after Maccas created the self-funded documentary McDonald’s Gets Grilled, the brand made another leap of faith in branded entertainment with a music video featuring X Factor finalist Johnny Ruffo. Gettin’ Serious was a 60-second R&B tune about love and Maccas’ new lamb burger,...

This article originally appeared in If Magazine #148 (Aug-Sept 2012). Since Storm Surfers 3D was released on August 14, it has become the eighth highest grossing local feature documentary of all time.
The tight-knit group behind Storm Surfers saw the production of a 3D feature film as a necessary step in their quest to create a truly international brand and they paid for it, in part, by leveraging the interest of 3D television channel operators.
.The benefit of using television pre-sales to finance the feature and other properties is that it is non-recoupable finance and the producer ends up with a bigger equity position,. said Marcus Gillezeau, who produced the latest chapter in the Storm Surfers franchise with life and business partner Ellenor Cox.
"Television pre-sales are licenses, so they don't take an equity position in the finance package whereas theatrical distributors or sales agents provide a minimum guarantee (Mg) which is recouped in first position.

Timed to mark the first day of Spring, the campaign sees a superhero version socceroo Tim Cahill painted at New York Red Bull stadium to launch Red Bull’s cranberry flavour.
To launch Red Bull blueberry, Storm Surfers film director Justin McMillan has teamed up with surfer Sally Fitzgibbons in an underwater 3D film.

Toronto – On July 31st, the 37th annual Toronto International Film Festival announced its second wave of features and documentaries to be added to this year’s already promising lineup.
The ‘Midnight Madness’ programme, which showcases up and coming genre films, will return for a second year, with The Raid winning the inaugural audience choice award in 2011.
Tiff Programmer Colin Geddes says that the audience should expect “everything from outrageous horror comedies to mock-doc-eco-apocalypse thrillers, featuring trans-dimensional bugs, lewd Catholic priests, meat monsters and dog-snapping psychopaths that will animate the Ryerson Theatre when the clock chimes 12.”
Returning for its fourth edition this year is the ‘City to City’ programme, which puts a spotlight on filmmakers working and living in a certain city, introducing audiences to local independent films from around the world. This year’s city of choice is Mumbai.
Artistic Director Cameron Bailey says, “Mumbai’s cinema today is entirely...

The 2012 Toronto International Film Festival line-up got another boost with today's announcement of the Midnight Madness, Vanguard and Documentary selections which include films from the likes of Barry Levinson, Don Coscarelli, Rob Zombie, Martin McDonagh, Ben Wheatley, Michel Gondry and Alex Gibney and include titles such as Aftershock, Dredd, Seven Psychopaths, Pusher, Sightseers, The We and the I, The Gatekeepers, Finding Nemo 3D, Hotel Transylvania and a Cinemateque selection that includes Alfred Hitchcock's Dial M For Murder, Roman Polanski's Tess and Roberto Rossellini's Stromboli. Considering Paul Thomas Anderson's The Master was recently added to the official selection as a Special Presentation I am going to have my hands full when it comes to screenings, but I will definitely make sure to catch McDonagh's Seven Psychopaths, which is one of my most anticipated films of the year. Otherwise, the schedule will determine which ones I check out. The...

With cameras on surfboards and jetskis, helicopters, boats, and even from behind the talent’s head – the new Storm Surfers 3D has every angle covered.
The Storm Surfers franchise, produced by 6ixty Foot Productions in association with Firelight Productions, was initially developed as an adventure series for the Discovery Network, following Australian surfing legends, Tom Carroll and Ross Clark Jones as they did battle with the biggest swells in the Southern Ocean.
First they surfed a ‘mythical’ never ridden before wave in the treacherous seas of Bass Strait simply called Dangerous Banks. In their second outing, they explored New Zealand’s rugged coast off the remote Fiordland. This time they cast a wider net. With help again from meteorologist and Swellnet.com.au’s webmaster, Ben Matson, they chase storms that rise from Antarctica to bombard our cold southern coast, and they do it all in 3D.

Way back in 2005, writer and director Greg Mclean‘s Aussie horror flick Wolf Creek soundly divided critics and audiences. While some considered it a welcome return to classic genre conventions, others saw its brutal depiction of violence and murder in the Australian Outback as anything but entertaining. Despite the misgivings of those horror haters, the film earned seven Australian Film Institute awards, including Best Director.
ScreenDaily reports Mclean, who followed the film with the man-eating alligator flick Rogue, has received the go ahead from Screen Australia to start production on Wolf Creek 2. Produced by Emu Creek Pictures and 403 Productions, the horror sequel is slated to begin shooting in February, with John Jarrat on board to reprise his role as the crazed Aussie serial killer Mick Taylor.
