The Detour is coming to an end. TBS has opted not to renew the comedy series starring Jason Jones and Natalie Zea for a fifth season. The final episode of Season 4, which aired on August 20, doubled as a series finale.
Created, written and executive-produced by husband-and-wife duo of Jones and Samantha Bee, The Detour was part of the first wave of comedy series ordered by TBS after Kevin Reilly joined Turner, which broke through. Most of the others, including Wrecked and People of Earth, were also canceled recently as TBS is morphing from a comedy-centric to a general-entertainment network featuring both comedy and drama programming.
The Detour focused on the hilariously dysfunctional Parker family and their infamous misadventures, which included a bonkers road trip, a disastrous move to New York and a run from the law in Alaska, among other things.

[Editor’s note: The following contains spoilers for “The Detour” Season 3 finale — Episode 10, “The Whiskey Double, Leave the Bottle.”]
Hopefully, the last episode of Season 3 of “The Detour,” one of the most underrated shows on TBS and in all of TV, means that every farewell episode per year involves an explosion of some kind. (Last season, the big finale setpiece was an exploding cow that caught both the Parkers and pretty much anyone in the audience off-guard.)
This time around, the surprise was a little more telegraphed, as much as the sudden appearance of an RPG can be. The militia group that had been working with Edie’s (Laura Benanti) renegade Uspis task force of one to track down the Parkers and indict them in a greater fraud scheme descended on this Pioneertown-style oasis, tucked away in the greater reaches of the Alaskan wilderness.
If this all seems overwhelming, that’s kind of by design. Over the course of three seasons,...

“The Detour” began as two parents recounting a disastrous road trip, but what happens when the road runs out? That’s what Season 3 of the hilarious TBS comedy is all about, as the Parker family finally stops running and settles down.
In the first trailer for Season 3, Nate (Jones), Robin (Natalie Zea), and their two kids (played by Ashley Gerasimovich and Liam Carroll) try to make a home for themselves in small-town Alaska. Spurred on by a mishap involving a snowmobile and a lake — more of a “final straw” kind of deal — the Parkers still can’t slow down while trying to settle down, and the 10 new episodes look just as wild as the first 20.

The opening titles sequence for “The Detour” is one of comedy’s best ongoing fakeouts. Every episode, Rob Kolar’s peppy faux theme song rings out above aerial shots of the New York skyline and happy moments of domestic bliss for the show’s Parker family. Five seconds in, the sound distorts and the unrelenting horrors of the previous episode repeat over glitchy, blurred screengrabs.
The shock value of the latter is probably what’s hooked more viewers for the TBS sitcom, now in its sophomore season. This year’s caravan of terror has included strewn contents of garbage bags, urine-soaked van interiors and a kiddie pool scene so unnerving, it’s better seen than described. But buried in that little bit of preamble is a kernel of truth: amidst the chaos, the Parkers have quietly become one of TV’s great families.

The following clip from the upcoming episode of “The Detour,” titled “The Trip,” tackles a very serious situation that many people have found themselves in whilst on a road trip — having to take a piss in a cup (it happens, don’t judge). The all-too-real dilemma is exhibited in hilarious fashion by Robin (Natalie Zea) who is determined to show just how far she’s willing to go for her children. This apparently includes peeing in a coffee cup while driving — much to the chagrin of her poor, disapproving husband Nate (Jason Jones).

Even after Season 1, it was clear “The Detour” was a deceptive title. Though Nate Parker’s seemingly impulsive but truly diabolical decision to drive (rather than fly) the family from Syracuse, New York to Florida pushed the exceedingly wild story forward, the altered route wasn’t really the focus of a family comedy unraveling more mysteries than most soap operas. Week after week as the Parkers made their lengthy journey south, and new secrets were unveiled about Nate (Jason Jones), Robin (Natalie Zea), and their two kids, Delilah (Ashley Gerasimovich) and Jared (Liam Carroll).
But the titular detour wasn’t the road trip itself, nor was it what was uncovered because of it. “The Detour’s” larger purpose was to take us on a trip out of our comfort zone. The TBS original is built to deconstruct our understanding of family comedies and family dynamics in general. Doing so while...

Remember, at the end of The Detour‘s first season, when the cops showed Nate all the photos of a woman who looked a lot like Robin? All those hairdos? Those ’80s and ’90s styles?

All it took was ten episodes last year for The Detour to solidify itself as one of the funniest and most outlandish new comedies on TV, managing to cover topics like overtly racist roadside chain restaurants and the anxiety over failing as a parent in one economical, hilarious swoop. The show was over-the-top to the point of idiocy at times, but it was an idiocy with class, the kind of thing with a set-piece poop joke that you could laugh at guiltily, but also somehow feel the need to tell everyone who’d listen about the show’s well-pitched humor.
Season 2, I’m happy to report, is as bawdy and disgusting as ever (actually, on that last point, it blows anything in season 1 out of the water). The characters are established, the structure is simultaneously fresh (new setting, no road trip) and comfortably...

TBS’ newest stab at original comedy fare tracks the hyper-random shenanigans one family encounters on a road trip from Syracuse, New York all the way down to Fort Lauderdale, Florida. There’s an overly enthusiastic dad, a loving and protective mom, a dumb kid, and a smart one. So, yes, The Detour‘s timing after last year’s lackluster Vacation reboot can be seen as admittedly poor (hell, show leads Jason Jones and Natalie Zea even look a little like Ed Helms and Christina Applegate).
The big, bright, audaciously funny positive side of The Detour is that the show is big, bright, and – you got it – audaciously funny. From the minds of star Jason Jones and his real-life wife Samantha Bee (who has her own critically acclaimed late night show on the network), the rollicking sitcom hits one unapologetically racy milestone after another,...

Chicago – Many critics failed to take Lynne Ramsay’s “We Need to Talk About Kevin” seriously, dismissing it as an art house retread of “The Omen.” Such a simplistic label fails to take into account the film’s carefully textured portrait of a deeply fractured mother-son relationship. Though the film takes its premise to melodramatic extremes, it does harbor considerable insight into the repercussions of a disconnect between parent and child.
Eva (Tilda Swinton) is the sort of mother who causes strangers to wince while passing her in the supermarket. She can barely contain the intense dislike that she feels for her child. Motherhood is a form of entrapment in her eyes, and her attempts to care for her young son lack any sense of genuine compassion. When she snaps on a hollow smile to calm her crying son, the moment is both chilling and darkly funny. It only gets...

Quite deliberately, We Need to Talk About Kevin (2011) provokes discussion. Why is Kevin evil? Was he born that way? Did his mother make him that way by withholding love? Is he a manifestation of his mother’s own hatred toward humanity? Questions one could argue that director Lynne Ramsay and screenwriter Rory Kinnear (adapted from Lionel Shriver’s novel) never intended their audience to be able to answer satisfactorily.
To describe the film as ‘arty’ would be doing everyone involved a disservice, but there is no getting away from its obvious stylisation. Cinematographer Seamus McGarvey, production designer Judy Becker and costume designer Catherine George deserve credit for combing their talents to form a cohesive palette which incorporates flashes, splashes and swathes of deep red. Incidentally, Lynne Ramsay...

What if you were scared of your own child? We Need to Talk About Kevin, based on Lionel Shriver's award-winning novel, is an intense glance at the relationship between Eva Khatchadourian (Tilda Swinton) and her son Kevin (played in teenage form by Ezra Miller). The editing is stream-of-consciousness style, as memories of Eva's pre-motherhood life mix with Kevin's childhood mixed with her current life as a social outcast. The viewer has to piece together why she's now living alone in a town full of people who detest her so strongly.
Through glimpses/flashbacks, we see Kevin's antipathy towards others start at a young age. Try as she might, Eva cannot connect with him. She rolls a ball to her toddler son and he just blankly stares back at her. Her husband Franklin (John C. Reilly) seems to have no problem getting along with their son, and is oblivious to Eva's worries.

Chicago – The mother and son relationship is perhaps one of the most complicated ever invented. In giving birth to an opposing gender, the woman must then deal with a maturation process foreign to her own, with all the potential psychosis attached. Tilda Swinton and Ezra Miller play the game in “We Need to Talk About Kevin.”
Rating: 4.0/5.0
Adapted from a novel in bold emotional detail by director Lynn Ramsay, “Kevin” pulls no punches in following the mother/son conundrum from birth to adolescence, chronicling a born-to-be-bad social misfit and the desperate means he practices in the push-pull of dear old Mom. The Oedipal Complex – boy wants to have his mother and kill his father – is also thematically on display, with stark ramifications for a combination of that theory with a modern, violent society.

Chicago – In the new film, “We Need to Talk About Kevin,” there is a breakout performance that is simply mind-blowing. Playing opposite the conflicted mother – portrayed by the great Tilda Swinton – is Ezra Miller, as her son Kevin. The character is a teenager in crisis, motivated by forces beyond his control.
“We Need to Talk About Kevin” is remarkable because it casts no judgment as it presents the members of a typical American middle class family. In this circumstance, the son is born to be bad, and increases his erratic behavior in crossing over to adolescence. How Tilda Swinton reacts as his mother and John C. Reilly as his father is the consequence of a bad dream-like situation. The film is as real as it is exaggerated, and adds insight to the modern expectations of the “perfect” nuclear family.
